Why Your YouTube Transcript Isn't Working or Loading
YouTube's transcript panel is unreliable. Whether it opens at all depends on UI state, device, region, the video's language, and how the creator configured the upload — and it fails in a handful of recognisable ways. In about 87% of cases the captions still exist and YouTube simply isn't showing them to you; in the rest there is genuinely no caption track, and the only fix is to transcribe the audio. The transcript panel opens but never loads
You click "Show transcript," the panel slides open, and it stays blank or spins forever. This is a front-end failure, not a missing caption track: an ad blocker or privacy extension blocking YouTube's caption request, a stale player session after the tab has been open for hours, or one of YouTube's rolling interface experiments. Try a hard reload (Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + R), an incognito window with extensions off, or a different browser. If you'd rather not debug it, paste the URL above — we request the caption track straight from YouTube's player API, so a broken panel makes no difference.
The transcript button is missing entirely
On desktop the option is not under the video — it lives inside the expanded description, or under the "…" more menu next to Save. In the YouTube app it sits a level deeper, and in the mobile web player and every embedded player it does not exist at all. The exact locations are in the next section. If it isn't in any of them, YouTube has decided there is no caption track to show for your session.
"Transcript is not available for this video"
YouTube shows this when its player can't fetch a caption track for your session — but auto-generated captions usually still exist server-side, which is why the same video often works in a different browser or country. Our tool requests the caption track directly, so it frequently returns text on videos where the panel says there is none.
"Show transcript" is greyed out
A disabled transcript control usually means you're watching from a restricted region, in an embedded player, or on a device that can't render captions for that video. The track is still listed in the video's manifest — we pull it out of there.
It's a YouTube Short
The Shorts player has no transcript button on any platform — that's a product decision, not a bug. Two things still work: open the Short as a normal watch page (swap /shorts/ for /watch?v= in the URL) and the regular transcript panel may appear, or paste the Shorts link above and we'll resolve it for you. Be aware that YouTube often skips automatic captioning on very short clips, so a good share of Shorts have no caption track to fetch at all.
It's a livestream or a premiere replay
While a stream is still live there is no finished recording to caption. After it ends, YouTube generates captions for replays far more slowly than for normal uploads — sometimes hours, sometimes never. If the replay matters and captions never arrive, transcribing the audio is the only route left.
The video's language isn't well covered
YouTube's automatic captions cover roughly 70 languages, but not equally well. In our analysis of 201,104 videos, English, Spanish, Korean, Hindi, Japanese, Russian, Portuguese, Arabic, German, Vietnamese, French, Italian, Turkish, Thai, Indonesian and Polish are effectively solved; outside roughly the top 25 languages it becomes a coin flip. Mandarin Chinese is the odd one out — 99.8% of Chinese caption tracks are human-uploaded, so if the creator didn't add one, there is no automatic track to fall back on. The creator disabled captions — or there's no speech
Captions can be switched off per video in YouTube Studio, and automatic captioning never runs on music, gameplay without commentary, ambient footage or ASMR. In these cases no caption track exists and no extraction tool can produce one. The audio is still there, though — automatic speech recognition, the same kind of technology behind YouTube's own auto-captions, listens to it and writes the transcript from scratch. That's what the section below does.
It's a brand-new upload (rarely the real cause)
"Just wait, YouTube hasn't processed it yet" is the most repeated explanation online, and it is almost always wrong. We tag every caption-less video published in the previous 24 hours: they account for 0.36% of all our failures — 131 videos out of 36,617. Automatic captioning is fast now. Waiting is worth one retry, not an afternoon.
Private, members-only or age-restricted video
These need a signed-in session, so no external tool can reach them — sign-in-required videos are 6.1% of the cases we can't serve. Age-restricted videos are inconsistent: sometimes they work, sometimes not. Paste the URL and see; if it comes back empty, the restriction is why.
The transcript site you were using stopped working
If a third-party transcript site suddenly returns errors or empty pages for every video, it is usually blocked rather than broken: YouTube aggressively rate-limits requests coming from data-centre IP ranges, so extractor sites go dark in waves and come back days later. Where the "Show Transcript" Button Actually Is
Most "there is no transcript button" reports are a hunting problem, not a caption problem. YouTube puts the control in a different place on every surface, and removes it entirely on three of them.
Desktop browser
Click the video description to expand it, scroll to the bottom of the expanded box, and click Show transcript. If it isn't there, open the … (more) menu on the action row next to Share and Save — on some layouts it lives there instead.
YouTube app (Android / iOS)
Tap the video title to open the description panel, scroll down to the Transcript row, then tap Show transcript. It is never on the main watch screen, and it disappears in landscape.
Mobile browser (iOS Safari, Chrome on Android)
There is no transcript button in the mobile web player — the single most common reason people conclude the feature is broken. Either request the desktop site from the browser menu, or paste the link into this page, which behaves the same on a phone as on a laptop.
Embedded players, TV and console apps
Videos embedded on other websites, and the smart TV or console apps, have no transcript interface at all. Copy the video link, open it on youtube.com, or paste it above.

No Captions at All? One Video in Eight Has to Be Transcribed
Everything above assumes YouTube has a caption track and is just hiding it. Often it doesn't have one. Across 245,703 videos we measured, 13.0% — about one in eight — had no usable caption track, and in 87.3% of those cases no track was ever created: captions switched off by the creator, a language YouTube's speech recognition doesn't cover, a Short it never bothered to caption. There is nothing to extract, so no transcript tool on the internet can help, and trying a different one changes nothing.
The audio is still there. The only way to get text out of it is to run automatic speech recognition — software that listens to the speech and writes it out — on the video itself. That means renting GPU time and actually processing the audio, which is why it isn't free the way reading an existing caption file is. Roughly 82% of caption-less videos have enough intelligible speech for it to work.
This is the part people don't expect. Regenerating a transcript from audio doesn't just fill a gap — it produces cleaner text than YouTube's automatic captions do on videos that have them.
- Fewer recognition errors. YouTube's auto-captions run a fast model across every upload on the platform — we measured them at a 9.9% median word error rate, with a long tail past 30% on accented or noisy audio. A dedicated transcription model, run once on one video, doesn't have that constraint and typically comes back with fewer mistakes.
- Real punctuation and complete sentences. 20% of YouTube's auto-captions contain no sentence-ending punctuation at all and 32% have no commas — one unbroken stream of words. What you get here is written as sentences, with capitals and paragraph breaks.
- Speakers told apart. Interviews, panels and podcasts come back split by who is talking. YouTube's captions never do this — they merge every voice into one column of text.
- Any language, detected automatically — including languages YouTube's own automatic captions don't cover, which is one of the reasons a video has no captions in the first place. No length limit.
- Word-level timestamps — click any line and the video jumps to that moment, so you can verify a quote in one click.
That combination matters most if you plan to hand the transcript to an AI. An unpunctuated wall of text forces the model to reconstruct sentence boundaries before it can do anything useful — you pay tokens for that repair work, and summaries and answers come out measurably worse. A punctuated, speaker-labelled transcript is the difference between "summarise this" producing a vague paragraph and producing an accurate outline with who said what. Ask questions about it, summarise an hour-long talk, pull out every claim with a timestamp to check.

How Often YouTube Transcripts Actually Fail
Nobody publishes this number, so we measured our own. The 13.0% above comes from 245,703 unique videos over 18 weeks, and it is stable — the rate never left a 9.7%–15.0% band in any single week. What is more useful is the breakdown, because it tells you which of the symptoms on this page you are actually looking at:

Two things follow from this table. First, the advice you'll read everywhere — wait for YouTube to finish processing — addresses 0.36% of the problem. Second, when a transcript is missing it is overwhelmingly because the caption track was never created, which is why trying a different extraction tool rarely changes the outcome and speech recognition does. This is a demand-weighted sample — videos people deliberately brought to a transcript tool, which skews toward ones where YouTube's own panel had already failed — so read 13% as an upper bound for YouTube as a whole. The Transcript Loaded, but It's an Unreadable Wall of Text
A different kind of "not working": the transcript is right there, and it's unusable — no sentences, no capitals, impossible to skim, quote or search. That isn't your video being unlucky. We compared 264 auto-captioned videos against 997,401 words of human-written captions of the same videos:
The words are mostly right
Median word error rate is 9.9% — about nine words in ten are transcribed correctly, and on clean single-speaker audio it is close to perfect. Recognition is not the weak link people assume it is.
The formatting is what collapses
20% of auto-captions contain not one period, question mark or exclamation point. 32% have no commas at all. They carry 90% fewer capital letters than human transcripts. Even among the most accurate ones, 27% still had zero sentence punctuation.
Why searching inside it fails
Caption files are cut into display-sized chunks rather than sentences, so a single sentence routinely spans three or four timed segments. Search inside YouTube's transcript panel matches those fragments, which is why a phrase you clearly heard often returns nothing.
What fixes it
Punctuation and capitalisation are a post-processing problem, not a recognition problem — they can be restored after the fact.
