YouTube Transcript Without Captions

Paste the link even if the video has no CC button. If YouTube has any caption track, you get it free. If it has none, AI can transcribe the audio itself.

How to Get a Transcript When a Video Has No Captions

1
Paste the link — even if the video has no CC button. The page checks every caption track YouTube has for it, in any language.
2
Take the captions if they exist — if any track turns up, whether creator captions, automatic captions, or another language, the transcript opens straight away, free.
3
Transcribe the audio if they don't — start an AI transcription. A speech model listens to the audio and the transcript appears in the same workspace, ready to copy, translate, or ask about.

Why Some YouTube Videos Have No Captions

We looked at 245,703 videos people tried to transcribe here. About one in eight had no usable caption track. Here is why:

ReasonShare of videos without a transcript
No caption track exists at all87.3%
Other or unclassified7.0%
Needs sign-in (age-restricted and similar)6.1%
Published less than 24 hours ago0.36%
Not playable in our region0.28%
Members-only0.28%

Videos with no track at all tend to be music and performances, gameplay or ambient footage without commentary, languages YouTube's automatic captions cover poorly, and uploads where the creator turned captions off. Note how small the "too new" row is: if a video has no captions, waiting a few hours almost never fixes it.

Two Free Things to Check First

  • A track in another language. A video can lack captions in your language and still have them in another. The page already looks at every language, and you can read any track translated into your own.
  • Whether it is really caption-less. Age-restricted videos often do have captions; they just aren't reachable without a signed-in session. If the CC button works for you on YouTube, the captions exist — here is what else can stop a transcript from loading.

Transcribing the Audio With AI

When there is genuinely no caption track, the only way to a transcript is to run the audio through a speech recognition model. That is what the workspace offers when it finds no captions. The language is detected from the audio, and long videos are barely slower than short ones.

What comes back is often cleaner than YouTube's own automatic captions:

  • Real sentences. Capitals, punctuation, and paragraph breaks, instead of one unbroken stream of words.
  • Speakers told apart. Interviews and podcasts come back split by who is talking.
  • Word-level timing. Click any line and the video jumps to that moment.

It is not magic, and nobody's is. In our test the AI produced a usable transcript for 197 of 240 caption-less videos, about 82%. The ones it could not do had no speech to transcribe: a video that was almost all music, a video with no voice at all.

AI transcription is part of Pro

Every transcription runs on a GPU, so it is the one thing here that isn't free. Pro starts with a free 3-day trial and you can cancel any time. The same Pro also works in the SubKun extension, which transcribes videos right on youtube.com.

Videos that already have captions never need Pro.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you get a transcript of a YouTube video without captions?

Yes, as long as someone is speaking in it. When YouTube has no caption track, the only way to a transcript is to run the audio through a speech recognition model. Paste the link above and the page offers to do that when it finds no captions.

How do I check whether a video has captions?

Look for the CC button in the player, or a Show transcript button under the description. Neither is fully reliable: some videos have captions that never show a transcript button. Pasting the link here checks every track directly.

Why doesn't my video have automatic captions?

Usually because there is too little speech: music, gameplay, ambient footage. Other causes are a language YouTube's captioning covers poorly, or a creator who turned captions off. Waiting rarely helps — in our data, videos too new to be captioned were 0.36% of the cases.

Is AI transcription free?

Checking for captions and using them is free. Transcribing audio is part of Pro, because every video runs through a speech model on a GPU. Pro starts with a free 3-day trial, and you can cancel any time.

Which videos can't be transcribed?

Videos with no speech, and videos that are almost all music with a few spoken seconds. In our test the AI produced a usable transcript for 197 of 240 caption-less videos, about 82%. The rest had nothing to transcribe.

Does it work on live streams?

Not while the stream is live or before it starts. Once the stream has ended and the replay is up, paste the replay link.

What language will the transcript be in?

The language that is spoken in the video. The model detects it from the audio, so you don't have to pick one. You can then read the transcript translated into your own language.

Can I transcribe videos while I watch them on YouTube?

Yes, with the SubKun Chrome extension. It uses the same Pro account, so one subscription covers both this site and the extension.

Honestly didn't expect a free tool to be this clean. Pasted a 40-min video link, got the full transcript with timestamps in seconds, copied it straight into ChatGPT for a summary. No signup, no paywall popup, no garbage ads. This is what the web used to feel like.

Used to get content for Instagram. Directly uploaded the transcription to AI tools and got the carousel copy. Which with the video would never have been possible.

I have used many transcription books on Google, all of them are websites that take money from us and provide data, but this site seems to be a convenient way to copy the original transcript in a second after pasting our URL. This is very helpful for studying and increasing our knowledge. Congratulations for providing such a service. Heartfelt thanks.
