[00:00] What works are evaluated at the judgment seat of Christ?
[00:05] So, let's make sure we understand what the question is asking.
[00:13] The judgment seat of Christ is an event that takes place for the body of Christ.
[00:19] So, let me draw a quick distinction.
[00:21] If you believe the gospel today, if you believe that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried and rose again the third day, the moment you believe that, you are placed into the body of Christ.
[00:31] You are spiritually placed into the church, the body of Christ.
[00:36] As a result of being placed into the church, what will happen is at the end of the dispensation of grace, you will be caught up in an event that's called the rapture.
[00:43] in an event that scripture calls the adoption to with the redemption of our body.
[00:47] Your old body will be changed into a new spiritual body and you will then take up residence in heaven for all eternity.
[00:54] So if you're a believer today, you've believed the gospel.
[00:58] You've been placed into the body
[01:00] of Christ and you will be caught up at the rapture.
[01:02] Now what that means is this.
[01:05] You will never go through the great white throne judgment.
[01:08] That's not something that you will be a part of.
[01:10] People that die today who are lost, they will go through the great white throne judgment, but a believer will not.
[01:16] So, is there a judgment that a believer faces?
[01:21] And the answer to that is yes, there is.
[01:23] That judgment occurs after the catching up when the believer's service will be evaluated.
[01:25] So, there is a judgment that awaits us.
[01:29] It's not a judgment between heaven and hell.
[01:33] It's a judgment that determines our eternal reward.
[01:36] So, we receive this question about what works are evaluated at the judgment seat of Christ.
[01:38] And we're going to break it down into a couple different questions as a way to try to analyze it.
[01:40] So, the first subquest that we want to consider is this.
[01:43] Will good works prior
[02:02] to salvation count at the judgment seat of Christ?
[02:08] So, that's an interesting question.
[02:10] So, let's say you get saved and let's just say that you're age 20.
[02:13] What happens to your good works before that time?
[02:17] So, the good works from birth to age 19, what happens to those works?
[02:22] Do those count for something at the judgment seat of Christ?
[02:26] So, to answer that question, I'm going to pose a rhetorical question.
[02:33] And that question is this.
[02:36] Does a lost man do any good works prior to salvation?
[02:45] Get Genesis chapter 6.
[02:47] Genesis 6.
[02:51] Genesis 6:5. Now, we're going back to the time of the flood.
[02:55] Genesis 6:5. And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth.
[02:58] And that,
[03:03] notice this, every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
[03:11] People sometimes think, well, I'm I'm basically a good person.
[03:13] I have a few flaws, but I'm basically a good person.
[03:18] Is that what Genesis 6:5 says?
[03:20] And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every every means every every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
[03:35] In other words, the man's thought patterns were only evil.
[03:38] How often?
[03:46] And it said every imagination of the thoughts of his heart.
[03:49] Now, what you may think is you may say, "Well, that's just before the flood."
[03:51] The flood, the time before the flood was a wicked time, so that's not really surprising.
[03:57] Well, get with me.
[03:58] Genesis 8 21.
[04:00] And the Lord smelled a
[04:04] Sweet savor.
[04:06] This is on the other side of the flood.
[04:09] It's after the flood.
[04:09] And the Lord said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground anymore for man's sake.
[04:13] For the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth.
[04:20] Neither will I again smite anymore every thing living as I have done.
[04:23] What's the nature of a man's heart of his of his thinking?
[04:27] Look what it says there.
[04:31] It's evil from his youth.
[04:37] Now the point of this is that what man has fundamentally is man has a heart problem and that his his thinking his inner thinking is evil.
[04:47] Look with me at Proverbs 21.
[04:53] Proverbs chapter 21.
[04:58] Proverbs 21 and verse 4.
[05:08] Now this is a curious verse.
[05:10] Let's try to understand what it means.
[05:13] And high look and a proud heart and the plowing of the wicked is sin.
[05:20] What's the plowing of the wicked?
[05:23] What is that a reference to?
[05:26] Well, I'll tell you what I believe it's a reference to.
[05:28] I believe it's a reference to plowing.
[05:30] In other words, the act of plowing a field.
[05:33] Now, you may think to yourself, well, how can the plowing of the wicked be sin?
[05:38] How can that be the case?
[05:42] Well, look with me at Proverbs 15.
[05:45] I mean, isn't plowing a necessary thing?
[05:48] Proverbs 15 verse 8.
[05:53] Proverbs 15:8.
[05:58] The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord.
[06:04] What happens when a wicked person offers a sacrifice?
[06:06] How does the Lord look at
[06:08] It? It's abomination.
[06:14] Look with me at Proverbs 21.
[06:18] Proverbs 21 verse 27.
[06:21] Proverbs chapter 21 and verse 27.
[06:28] The sacrifice of the wicked is abomination, how much more when he bringeth it with a wicked mind.
[06:40] So even when the wicked offers a sacrifice, something that scripture approves of, how does God view it?
[06:50] The sacrifice of the wicked is what? Abomination is what it is.
[06:53] And then it says, "How much more when he bringeth it with a wicked mind."
[06:58] See, what happens sometimes is even when the outward act isn't a bad thing, can we have evil
[07:09] inner motivations, the truth is that we can.
[07:14] What I would suggest to you is this.
[07:17] Even the the seeming good that lost men do, even the neutral actions, those actions are sin.
[07:27] Look with me at Romans chapter 8.
[07:35] And let me ask let me ask this question.
[07:37] If you're a lost person, what does God want you to do?
[07:44] Does he want you to stop sinning?
[07:48] Well, I suppose he does.
[07:51] Does he want you to start giving money to the church?
[07:55] Does he want you to join an organization?
[07:59] Look with me at Romans 8 verse 8.
[08:04] So then they that are in the flesh, the unsaved, what does it say?
[08:12] cannot please God.
[08:14] It is literally impossible for someone who is in the flesh, who is lost, to please God.
[08:22] It's not possible.
[08:27] Look with me at Hebrews 11:6.
[08:33] Hebrews 11 verse 6.
[08:39] But without faith, it is impossible to please him.
[08:42] So think of it this way.
[08:46] What happens if you're on the earth, you're a lost man, and you ask yourself the qu question, what should I do to please God?
[08:54] Should I give money to charity?
[08:58] Should I quit my sinning?
[09:00] Should I do these other good works?
[09:07] Well, what scripture says is without faith it is impo impossible to please
[09:13] him.
[09:16] In other words, let me put it as simple as it can be.
[09:18] You know what God desires a lost man to do?
[09:20] He desires him to believe.
[09:20] He desires him to get saved.
[09:23] Think of it this way.
[09:25] Let's say that I'm a lost person and I do a whole bunch of good deeds.
[09:30] Well, it's better to do the good deeds than the bad deeds.
[09:35] But what happens at the end of my life if I never come to faith in the gospel?
[09:40] Unfortunately, I will have a very unpleasant eternity.
[09:45] That's why God's desire for man, his desire is that people believe the gospel.
[09:51] They believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for their sins.
[09:53] He was buried and he rose again the third day.
[09:58] The very instant you believe that, God saves you forever.
[10:01] And that message, just to be clear, that message is to the whole earth.
[10:07] Everyone can take advantage of that.
[10:11] Everyone should take advantage of that because that's the path to a
[10:14] blessed eternity.
[10:14] Please do that.
[10:16] If you don't do that, it's it's a it's a terrible mistake that you'll you'll deeply regret.
[10:24] So based upon that, let's get back to the earlier question.
[10:26] Do the good works that we do before salvation, do those count at the judgment seat of Christ?
[10:33] And the answer is they don't because without faith it is impossible to please him.
[10:38] There's no redeeming value in those works such that at the judgment seat of Christ, God gives us a reward on the basis of those.
[10:46] Let let me put it this way.
[10:49] When you come to faith in the gospel, you come to faith in the gospel not because your works got you 50% of the way there and now your faith is going to take care of the rest or your your works got you 75% of the way there and grace is going to take care of the rest.
[11:06] It's not that the works got you 1% of the way there.
[11:09] Your works were as filthy rags.
[11:09] They they they couldn't accomplish anything good.
[11:14] What you needed was you needed the shed blood of Jesus Christ to pay for your sins.
[11:19] So works prior to salvation do not earn us a reward at the judgment seat of Christ.
[11:25] Let me take up a different question now.
[11:27] What works are evaluated posts salvation.
[11:31] So now we're changing the focus.
[11:34] We've gone from pre-salvation.
[11:36] So unbelief, someone is unsaved.
[11:39] Now they have believed the gospel.
[11:41] They have trusted the blood that Jesus Christ shed for their sins.
[11:43] Now, what does God evaluate at the judgment seat of Christ?
[11:47] What actions during their life count or don't count?
[11:51] So, get with me.
[11:54] 2 Corinthians chapter 5.
[12:06] And let's look at verse 10.
[12:10] For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ.
[12:12] Every believer has that
[12:15] appointment.
[12:19] That everyone may receive the things done in his body according to that he hath done whether it be good or bad.
[12:26] So does God evaluate the bad works at the judgment seat of Christ?
[12:32] It it seems that he does because he evaluates all the things that are done in his body according to that he hath done whether it be good or bad.
[12:43] Get with me.
[12:48] 1 Corinthians chapter 4.
[12:50] 1 Corinthians chapter 4 verse 5.
[12:56] Therefore, judge nothing before the time until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counselss of the hearts, and then shall every man have praise of
[13:16] God.
[13:16] So, should we be judging things before the appointed time?
[13:21] Obviously not, because there's there's hidden things that we don't know about.
[13:25] The Lord is the judge.
[13:25] He's the one that can evaluate them.
[13:27] And what it says there is that there's hidden things of darkness.
[13:31] There's things that we don't have any idea about.
[13:36] It also says this that God will make manifest the councils of the hearts.
[13:42] What that tells you is the judgment seat of Christ is not simply about your external works.
[13:47] It's also about what?
[13:50] Your inner man.
[13:50] the hidden councils of the hearts.
[13:53] Are there times where people do things externally where it appears to be a positive thing, but may the heart motivation be wrong?
[14:04] Sometimes it is.
[14:08] And what 1 Corinthians 4:5 says is at the judgment seat of Christ, notice what it says about that, they will they'll be made manifest.
[14:15] In other words, they'll
[14:18] be made obvious and open and apparent and evident, right?
[14:22] It won't it won't be hidden.
[14:25] It'll be made manifest at that point in time.
[14:28] Now, go with me 1 Corinthians chapter 3.
[14:30] 1 Corinthians chapter 3 is probably the most well-known passage about the judgment seat of Christ.
[14:39] And the the next sub question I want to look at is this.
[14:41] What will be the standard at the judgment seat of Christ?
[14:46] In other words, what will be the standard of judgment?
[14:51] Look with me at 1 Corinthians chapter 3 and let's start in verse 10.
[15:00] according to the grace of God which is given unto me.
[15:03] The me being Paul since he wrote 1 Corinthians as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation and another buildeth thereon.
[15:12] But let every man take heed how he buildth thereupon.
[15:15] So Paul's the wise master
[15:20] builder.
[15:21] He laid the foundation.
[15:24] Verse 11.
[15:27] For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
[15:30] So what happens if you try to build upon a foundation other than Jesus Christ?
[15:32] Totally totally worthless.
[15:34] Don't don't do that.
[15:36] That'd be a mistake.
[15:39] Verse 12.
[15:40] Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble.
[15:45] So people have a choice as to their building materials.
[15:48] And obviously those building materials are of differing qualities.
[15:49] Obviously, gold, silver, precious stones are precious substances.
[15:56] Wood, hay, and stubble are not precious substances.
[15:59] Now, notice verse 13.
[16:02] Every man's work shall be made manifest.
[16:04] For the day shall declare it again, it's going to be revealed because it shall be revealed by fire, and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.
[16:15] So, what that tells us is that our works will be evaluated by fire and they'll be
[16:22] revealed by fire.
[16:23] What comes to my mind is this.
[16:27] How do you differentiate between gold and fool's gold?
[16:29] Well, they look similar, but one of the basic and most certain ways to differentiate between gold and fool's gold is simply to heat it.
[16:44] And the reason why is that gold and fool's gold have different melting points.
[16:50] And so what happens is you heat it up, you see the point at which it melts, and you can then determine whether or not it's gold or fool's gold.
[16:59] Well, something very much like that is going to happen at the judgment seat of Christ where what's going to happen is the believer's works are going to be revealed by fire.
[17:07] And it'll be clear as a result of that fire what's gold, silver, precious stones or wood, hay, stubble.
[17:14] Now think about this for a minute.
[17:16] If you burn gold, what happens when when when gold is burnt?
[17:19] What happens is the the dross
[17:22] separates and the end result of burning gold is it purifies it because the dross the contamination it separates from the gold itself.
[17:32] Well, think about this.
[17:36] wood, hay, and stubble.
[17:36] What will happen to to wood and hay and stubble when it's evaluated by fire?
[17:47] It's it's going to just be completely consumed, right?
[17:50] And then only the gold and silver and precious stones will remain.
[17:54] Now, there's a cross reference here that I think is very helpful.
[17:55] So, get with me.
[17:58] Jeremiah chapter 23.
[18:03] We've talked about before that the most important principle of of Bible study is cross references.
[18:09] Meaning, if you're looking at a verse and it's confusing to you, you don't understand it, you're trying to figure out what it means, what should you do?
[18:16] Well, one of the things you should do is you should find the cross references that explain what's going on.
[18:22] for 1 Corinthians 3 when it talks
[18:27] about revealed by fire.
[18:30] I personally believe that the most helpful cross reference is in Jeremiah 23.
[18:34] Jeremiah 23:29.
[18:37] Is not my word like as a fire, saith the Lord, and like a hammer that breakth the rock in pieces.
[18:50] In 1 Corinthians 3, when God says that every man's work shall be revealed by fire, what I personally believe the fire is is the fire is the pure and perfect standard of God's word.
[19:07] So that what happens at the judgment seat of Christ is our service is evaluated.
[19:11] It's tested.
[19:14] It's revealed by fire.
[19:14] and works that we have done that are consistent with God's word that are that God's word would approve, well, those will abide the fire.
[19:24] But the ones
[19:27] that that are not in line with God's word, they'll be wood, hay, and stubble.
[19:32] Poof.
[19:32] They'll just they'll be incinerated, disintegrated, vaporized, atomized.
[19:39] They're going to be destroyed is the point.
[19:41] Now go back with me to 1 Corinthians chapter 3 verse4.
[19:46] So the the standard I believe is the standard is God's word.
[19:52] 1 Corinthians chapter 3:14.
[19:52] If any man's work abide, it it endures the fire which he hath built there upon, he shall receive a reward.
[19:59] Verse 15, if any man's work shall be burned, obviously wood, hay, and stubble.
[20:04] He shall suffer loss.
[20:08] Now that loss is not loss of salvation, it's loss of reward.
[20:10] I know that because notice what the very next phrase says.
[20:14] But he himself shall be saved, yet so is by fire.
[20:17] So no one at the judgment seat of Christ loses their salvation.
[20:23] What what happens is they lose their reward
[20:28] if they built with wood, hay, and
[20:31] stubble. Therefore, it's necessary to
[20:33] build with gold, silver, precious
[20:38] stones. Now get with me. 2 Timothy
[20:41] chapter 2. I mentioned earlier the
[20:44] principle of cross
[20:46] references. And one thing you might be
[20:48] wondering is you might be wondering to
[20:50] yourself, well, what's what's gold and
[20:52] silver? What's what is that talking
[20:55] about? And what's a fascinating thing is
[20:57] if you run gold and silver and precious
[20:59] stones in in the wisdom literature of
[21:02] the Old Testament, you'll reach the
[21:04] conclusion that it's wisdom and
[21:05] understanding. that gold, silver,
[21:07] precious stones are about wisdom and
[21:09] knowledge and
[21:10] understanding. And I I I think that is
[21:12] in fact the case. What's curious is if
[21:16] you run the gold and silver references
[21:19] in Paul's writings, you come up with a
[21:23] very curious
[21:24] reference. And that reference is 2
[21:27] Timothy chapter 2 verse 20. 2 Timothy
[21:31] chapter 2 verse 20. I don't know what it
[21:34] is about second Timothy, but these pages
[21:35] here, they're stuck together all the
[21:37] time. 2 Timothy chapter 2 20. But in a
[21:41] great house there are not only vessels
[21:44] of gold and of silver, but also of wood
[21:46] and of earth. That sounds an awful lot
[21:49] like 1 Corinthians 3, doesn't it? And
[21:50] notice what it says. And some to honor
[21:52] and some to dishonor. So it says there
[21:56] even in a great house there's both
[21:58] vessels of gold and silver which are
[21:59] vessels to honor and those vessels of
[22:02] wood and earth like
[22:04] hay that are dishonor. They're they're
[22:07] they're less honorable than the vessels
[22:10] to honor. Now what's fascinating about
[22:13] that is 2 Timothy 2:20 is right in the
[22:17] context of 2 Timothy 2:15, one of our
[22:21] our favorite verses. So look with me at
[22:22] 2 Timothy 2:15.
[22:24] And and notice carefully what it says.
[22:27] The first word of 2 Timothy 2:15 is
[22:29] study. And it's written as a command. So
[22:31] the believer is
[22:33] commanded to study the word of God.
[22:37] Study to show thyself approved unto God.
[22:41] Well, that's fascinating. You you study
[22:44] so that your works may be
[22:47] approved. A workman that needeth not to
[22:50] be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of
[22:52] truth.
[22:54] Now, if you take apart that verse, and
[22:57] let's we're going to do it in just a
[22:58] second here. Notice how much the
[23:02] terminology sounds exactly like 1
[23:05] Corinthians 3. Study to show thyself
[23:08] approved. Well, the whole issue in 1
[23:10] Corinthians 3 is the believer being
[23:12] approved, right? They they want to have
[23:14] their works be viewed as gold, silver,
[23:16] precious stones, not wood, hay, stubble,
[23:18] because if those works are approved,
[23:20] then they receive a reward. study to
[23:23] show thyself approved unto God a
[23:26] workman. Well, 1 Corinthians 3 said,
[23:29] "The fire shall try every man's work."
[23:32] That means in 1 Corinthians 3 that the
[23:34] believer was a workman if the fire was
[23:36] trying every man's work. A workman that
[23:39] needeth not to be
[23:41] ashamed, rightly dividing the word of
[23:44] truth. I don't know if you've ever seen
[23:47] this. I've been in buildings before
[23:49] where the the construction folks um just
[23:54] made a mistake. They didn't follow the
[23:55] blueprints, right? They built something
[23:57] in the wrong location because they
[24:00] weren't following the blueprints
[24:03] carefully. You've heard of situations
[24:05] where what people will do with buildings
[24:07] is to save money, they'll skimp on the
[24:10] building material. And so something may
[24:12] call for a certain quality of material
[24:16] and to save money they'll use something
[24:18] lesser than that. Well, think about what
[24:20] 1 Corinthians 3 was telling us. Paul
[24:22] says he was a wise master
[24:25] builder. He was the designer. He was the
[24:28] architect, if you will. He laid down
[24:31] some rules for how people are to build
[24:34] during the dispensation of grace. Well,
[24:36] what happens if you don't build
[24:37] according to those rules? What happens
[24:40] if you show up at the judgment seat of
[24:43] Christ and the way that you build things
[24:46] is not the way that God told you to
[24:48] build them? The reason why I personally
[24:51] think it's important that the cross
[24:53] reference for 1 Corinthians 3:13 when it
[24:57] talks about the word of God, the reason
[24:59] why I think Jeremiah 23:29 is very
[25:01] helpful is if that's the right cross
[25:03] reference, then it tells you that the
[25:06] fire that evaluates a man's work in 1
[25:08] Corinthians 3 is the word of God.
[25:10] Meaning as you're going through your
[25:12] saved life and you're dis you're living
[25:15] out your service to the Lord Jesus
[25:17] Christ, do so according to the
[25:20] principles principles of scripture. Do
[25:22] so according to Paul's
[25:25] revelation. Now notice, let's we're in 2
[25:28] Timothy 2:15. Now, of course, we know
[25:30] the last part of the verse, rightly
[25:32] dividing the word of truth. And we need
[25:34] to rightly divide the word of truth so
[25:35] that we have understanding of what God's
[25:37] doing today. So rightly dividing the
[25:39] word of truth is important. But please
[25:41] understand 2 Timothy 2:15 is is not
[25:44] simply a verse saying recognize these
[25:47] divisions. It's a verse that says if you
[25:51] want to be approved at the judgment seat
[25:53] of Christ, you need to be a workman that
[25:56] studies the word of God so you can build
[25:59] according to the blueprints. If you
[26:02] don't build according to the blueprints,
[26:04] what happens when you show up at the
[26:07] judgment seat of
[26:09] Christ and your work is evaluated and
[26:12] it's well Dave you try to guess a little
[26:17] bit sort of maybe but you didn't build
[26:20] anything I told you to
[26:23] build. Think about this just for a
[26:28] minute. Think about the Old Testament.
[26:31] When God gave instructions for how the
[26:33] temple was to be built, did he have
[26:35] anything that was made of styrofoam or
[26:38] nerf or, you know, disposable plastic?
[26:43] He he didn't have any of those things,
[26:45] right? He he had the He had the temple
[26:50] built with fine materials, right? I
[26:53] mean, he did. And and that's exactly
[26:55] what 1 Corinthians 3 is talking about
[26:57] when it talks about building upon the
[26:59] foundation with gold, silver, precious
[27:01] stones, wood, hay, or stubble. God is
[27:03] not interested in wood, hay, or stubble.
[27:05] He's not interested in inadequate,
[27:08] inferior, substandard building
[27:12] materials. We need to build with the
[27:14] right stuff. That's gold, silver, and
[27:17] precious stones. And that is revealed in
[27:20] the word of God. And we understand that
[27:22] by rightly dividing the word of
[27:25] truth. Let me sum it up this way if I
[27:28] could. Here's the first issue in life.
[27:31] And you you you have to get this issue
[27:34] right. You have to resolve your eternal
[27:37] destiny. You have to resolve where
[27:39] you're going to spend eternity. And the
[27:41] way that you go to heaven today is very
[27:44] simple. It is the fact that Christ died
[27:46] for our sins, was buried, and rose again
[27:48] the third day. The second you believe
[27:49] the gospel, God saves your soul
[27:51] eternally. You need to get that question
[27:54] resolved. If you leave earth without
[27:57] resolving that question, there is no
[28:00] fixing that problem. That's why God says
[28:04] in 2 Corinthians, "Behold, today is the
[28:07] accepted day of salvation. Behold,
[28:10] now so please, please, please resolve
[28:14] that issue immediately, if not sooner."
[28:17] Well, what happens if you resolve that
[28:20] issue? Well, the next issue is this. You
[28:23] can't lose your salvation. You're not
[28:24] going to lose your salvation. It can't
[28:25] happen because Ephesians 1, the moment
[28:27] you believe the gospel, you're sealed by
[28:30] the Holy Spirit. So, you can't lose it.
[28:32] But what is in doubt, what is in
[28:35] question is your reward at the judgment
[28:38] seat of Christ. It could either be gold,
[28:40] silver, precious stones, or it might be
[28:42] wood, hay, stubble. And there are those
[28:45] according to 1 Corinthians 3 where
[28:47] they've built with wood, hay, stubble,
[28:48] and they're saved yet so as by fire and
[28:51] they have a loss of reward. My
[28:53] encouragement to you is don't don't be
[28:55] in the category of having a loss of
[28:57] reward. Don't don't do that.
[29:00] Instead, be a workman who rightly
[29:03] divides the word of
[29:06] truth. Get with me 1 Corinthians 10 and
[29:09] and we'll close with this verse. 1
[29:11] Corinthians chapter
[29:13] 10 and and this is a great verse and it
[29:16] just makes it as simple as can be. 1
[29:18] Corinthians
[29:19] 10:31, "Whether therefore ye eat or
[29:23] drink or whatsoever ye
[29:26] do, do all to the glory of
[29:30] God." See, the gospel requires nothing
[29:33] of you but faith. The moment you believe
[29:35] the gospel, you're saved. But once
