Translation: zh-CN

[00:06] The first 10 years of my life I spent uh in a series of foster homes and orphanages.

[00:13] My mother had um three boys by the time she was very young in her early 20s and my father abandoned his family.

[00:21] He just left, he took off one day.

[00:24] Well, I was born in 1940 and uh there was a depression in the world.

[00:27] There was a war getting going, um, there was no welfare, there were no food stamps, things like that.

[00:36] So my brother Dave and I, uh, my next oldest brother, uh, went into a series of homes and ended up in a uh orphanage kind of place out in Mount Clemens, Michigan.

[00:47] And my oldest brother went with my grandmother N9 or 10 and then and got us back together.

[00:58] But being poor means you think

[01:02] Poor self-worth comes from one thing, a belief that you are worthy.

[01:09] Teacher, therapist, consulting psychologist, and best-selling author Wayne.

[01:26] Dyer, thank you.

[01:32] Thank you so much.

[01:34] Enough, enough, thank you, thank you.

[01:38] I appreciate it so much.

[01:41] The uh topic, if there is such a thing for today, is uh choosing your own greatness.

[01:50] Or uh being a no-limit person, taking charge of your own life.

[01:55] Something I really believe that you are the sum total of all of the the choices that you've made up until now, and anything.

[02:04] about yourself or your life that you don't like or isn't working or is mobilizing you is to be looked at in terms of can I grow rather than why did I do it or isn't this wrong.

[02:20] see the two ways to motivate yourself are deficiency motivation which says where I am I don't like I don't like what I've done I don't like the fact that I can't do this well or I can't do that well so I will list these things in my own repertoire and then I will be constantly trying to repair those deficiencies always assuming that I'm deficient that there's something wrong with me and I'm trying to fix it.

[02:43] and when you do that you spend your whole life doing that and you never arrive because your life becomes a series of trying to get someplace else and it is if you follow that if you live that if you behave that then what you what happens to you is you become a person.

[03:04] who will always suffer from this disease called more you always have to have more

[03:12] because whenever you are getting where you want to go let's say you want $100,000 in the bank and you work and you struggle and you deny yourself and you do all of those things and you finally finally you get there and here you are you got $100,000 in the bank

[03:26] all of this stuff over here is a course your life and that is all you know that's what you know how to that's how you are that is your being that is your way of being

[03:35] so that when you do get here what you will do is say this is not enough

[03:41] you must a No Limit person is never operating from deficiency or from lack in their life

[03:51] they're never saying I don't have enough you see you're never going to get enough you already are

[04:06] Everything you're everything that you need.

[04:09] Think of it for just a moment.

[04:11] Everything that you need to have total bliss, perfection of your life.

[04:16] You already are, you already have it.

[04:19] You came into this world with nothing, that's how you're going out.

[04:24] And the time that you have here, it what you have is your uniqueness, your specialness.

[04:29] And you don't need anything else.

[04:32] Now think on this: if you don't know how to appreciate what you have and where you are in your life, you don't need anything else.

[04:43] Because if you do get something else, you won't know how to appreciate that either.

[04:48] You'll just want more, or you'll want it to be different, or you want it to be the way it used to be.

[04:58] Or you'll want someone else to be the way you think they should be.

[05:00] Successful people, or no-limit people, or self-actualizing people, or inner-directed people, however you

[05:08] Whatever labels that have been put on them by great thinkers and philosophers and therapists and people uh that have looked at human beings.

[05:17] These kinds of people are people who always have enough.

[05:20] There are some people if you invite them over and you say um you know I'd like you to uh I'd like you to come over tonight and i' I'd like you just stay over if you can instead of having to drive back.

[05:31] And they'll say well can you say can you stay and I say well I don't know if I can stay or not.

[05:35] Um well you could sleep on the cot.

[05:38] Oh no no I could never sleep on the c i I can't sleep on cats.

[05:43] I got a sciatica don't you know that I have I have back pain and I the cats no that's out of the question.

[05:47] I couldn't sleep on a cat uh and what about breakfast.

[05:51] Well we don't have any food but um we have some old grapefruit that are in the uh in the uh refrigerator.

[05:57] They have a few spots on them.

[05:59] Oh no I could never eat grapefruit spots no thanks.

[06:01] I can't eat grapefruit spots I just couldn't do that you know.

[06:06] Uh and these are people who uh never

[06:08] have enough they are are not able to be flexible and to change and there are other people

[06:14] if you say would you like to sleep over we got a place in the sewer

[06:18] hey that'd be great I can handle that no problem I slept there before

[06:23] it's all and all we have is grapefruit

[06:25] oh I love grapefruit well we got this got spots

[06:27] I'm oh I really like grapefruits SPS those are terrific I'll I'll go for those

[06:30] there are some people who can handle anything not because their circumstances are different

[06:37] you see your circumstances have very little to do with your fulfillment in life

[06:41] very little it's it's how you're approaching your circumstances it's your attitude towards your circumstances that make all the difference in the world

[06:52] and taking what you are and accepting it

[06:56] I got to show you this

[07:01] I don't know if the camera can get this

[07:04] this is a little uh advertisement that was in the Detroit Free Press uh

[07:10] For uh last September I was giving a speech at the Unity Church of today in Detroit and it says uh Dr Wayne Dyer will talk about your inner child and how to deal effectively with problems in all relationships and it was a real nice ad you can see that then on top of the ad in the same paper there's another ad and the ad says face

[07:40] it right on top of my head there's no hiding from hair loss and they got a picture of a guy with a box over his head and they have a before and after guy there and they after guy looks like he's just found fulfillment and it says you can't run and you can't hide hair loss is a problem and unless you take action it will

[08:11] Continue. Now we've got to look at this in terms of, uh, what I can do with this and how I can handle this.

[08:21] See, my daughter helped me with being bald a long time ago.

[08:25] She said, "Dad, you're not really bald. Don't think of yourself that way."

[08:27] She said, "You're just about this much taller than your hair, that's all."

[08:31] Which is sort of a nice way to look at it, too.

[08:34] I just sort of outgrew my hair.

[08:35] I sort of transcended my hair, if you will.

[08:39] Right. No limit. People are human beings who take what they are and accept it and don't tell themselves that somehow they're deficient because of anything about themselves.

[09:00] This is a very crucial, uh, concept for for me and for virtually all of us.

[09:05] It's this idea of taking your life in your own hands and

[09:12] being the kind of person that you choose to be and understanding that everything that comes your way is an opportunity is a blessing and it wasn't until I learned how to celebrate virtually everything that came my way that I was able to transcend it you see

[09:38] everything that was given to us by God whatever that is is perfect no one can deny the mountains are perfect and the rivers are perfect and the birds are perfect and the hippopotamuses are perfect and and and so on this is just what was given to us

[09:57] everything else that you have on our planet planet that we have on our planet comes about as a result of thinking thinking thought makes it so

[10:09] all right this microphone comes about as a result of thinking somebody imagines

[10:15] it somebody then tells somebody else about and it's and it creates it the dress that you're wearing the shirt that I'm the shoes that you have the stage these cameras everything that you see that wasn't given to us was created by man as a result of the way that we think the way that we think so what gets inside of us as a cell comes about as a result of the way that we choose to think in our lives very important principle to understand because once you get a hold of thinking and that it creates everything that you have in your life you can change and make it as absolutely perfect as you want it to be because thought makes it so creative visualization is what we're talking about here you you the imagery or the image that you have of anything in your life is really like mental Behavior it's like going out and practicing if you go out and practice with a basketball shooting uh free throws over and over again that's physical practice imagery is mental practice it's mental behavior when you

[11:16] have an image that you can succeed at at something

[11:18] when you have an image that you can do it rather than that you can't do it

[11:21] when you get into your car and you have an image that you're going to find a parking place rather than that there'll be no place to park

[11:25] so you're not looking for no place to park

[11:27] you will start acting on the image that you have very much like you will start acting on the practice that you have

[11:32] when you're shooting baskets or when you're hitting a forehand or or working on your soup or anything else that you're doing

[11:38] Bucky Fuller who I served with on the hunger project advisory Council for nine years who died not too long ago said that

[11:48] 99% of who you are you can't touch you can't see you can't smell

[11:51] 99% of you is untouchable unsellable invisible

[12:00] it is what Ken kaai has called your your conscious awareness

[12:03] it's your it's what looks out behind those eyeballs

[12:06] what is that it isn't it isn't cells

[12:12] it's some kind of conscious awareness that you are and make no

[12:17] mistake about it you've occupied a whole lot of bodies already.

[12:18] now this is not reincarnation talk.

[12:21] although I don't know about this reincarnation.

[12:23] people ask me if I believe in it.

[12:25] I said well I taught in a junior high school in the inner city of Detroit for four years and I saw those dead bodies come to life every day at 3:00.

[12:35] so I believe in reincarnation.

[12:40] all right now if what you if 99% of who you are you can't touch and you can't feel and you can't smell then where what is it.

[12:50] who is it where are you what is this thing called your essence or who you are and where does it go.

[12:56] now think of this you were in a body.

[12:59] I have a little baby girl who's 11 months old and she and we were all in a body that size.

[13:02] well it's only a body about this big.

[13:03] got fingers only this long you know.

[13:08] got uh tiny tiny little Parts all over the place.

[13:10] I mean she's only this tall now is that her.

[13:20] that her Essence because I have other children who are much older and I am much older than that and I can remember being three and being in a different body still me still my Essence there different body totally different doesn't even look anything like when I was 11 months old and then I was 13 and I had a funny body at 13 but still my Essence was there in a whole new body hairs growing all over the place that I didn't understand all kinds of things happening to it you know then hairs falling out of it later on you know looking at those hairs that fall out and say what held it in yesterday you know what I don't know I don't even understand that that okay and so it's like who I am has been in many many bodies already all right and that essence you see everything on our planet that is alive can never die it can never die life doesn't die it just transforms it just moves on to new places and new ways of being new ways of being and the

[14:22] Way of being that is the most transcendent of all is this way that comes from seeing yourself as love and only having that to give away, only having that to give away.

[14:36] Let's say I would to stand up here in front of you and just visualize for a moment that I have an orange and I take this orange and I squeeze it as hard as I can, squeeze it.

[14:49] Okay, what's going to come out? Juice.

[14:51] What kind of juice? Orange juice.

[14:54] Orange apple juice? Any chance once in a while? While come on now, and then little mango juice come out of an orange once in a while? No.

[15:00] Mistakes, right? Never.

[15:01] No matter what, next question.

[15:04] Everybody passes these are easy, okay?

[15:06] Why when you squeeze an orange as hard as you can squeeze it, does orange juice come out?

[15:15] Cuz that's not because it's an orange, because that's what's inside, isn't it?

[15:22] On our planet when you squeeze.

[15:24] Something what comes out of it is what's inside.

[15:26] Not too difficult on right.

[15:30] Does it matter if your mother squeezes the orange?

[15:36] Does it matter what instrument she uses?

[15:39] Does it matter if you just had your period and then you squeeze an orange?

[15:45] Does it matter if your boss squeezes it?

[15:48] How about if your kids do it?

[15:49] Your kids squeeze it on.

[15:51] Does it matter? Does it matter what time of day?

[15:52] Suppose they do it at noon.

[15:55] All right, how about at 4 in the morning?

[15:57] Does that matter?

[16:00] Whenever you squeeze in an orange, the only thing you get out is what's inside, right?

[16:05] No arguments.

[16:08] Same thing works for you.

[16:10] Same principle works for you.

[16:12] It's a principle of the universe.

[16:15] All right, someone squeezes you.

[16:17] That is someone puts pressure on you.

[16:19] Someone says things about you that you don't like.

[16:23] Someone puts uh attention on you.

[16:24] Whatever your boss says something to you that you don't like and out of you comes anger.

[16:30] And out of you comes hatred.

[16:32] And out of you comes fear or out of you comes stress or out of you comes tension.

[16:40] Why is it because of your boss?

[16:44] The way they squeeze.

[16:46] Never is it because of your mother?

[16:49] I mean she really can be a pain sometimes, right?

[16:52] Is it because of your children?

[16:55] No, what comes out of you always when someone squeezes you is what's inside.

[16:58] This is the the vital principle of being a No Limit person.

[17:01] It's so crucial to get this and understand that that if you have any hatred in your heart for anyone in this world or any anger or any fear or any of those things, it has nothing to do with the rest of the world.

[17:15] It only has to do with what you put inside.

[17:18] Now how does what gets inside of you get there?

[17:22] That's the key.

[17:26] How does it get there?

[17:29] As you think, only as you think you see.

[17:33] there's no anger in the world.

[17:35] there's no stress in the world.

[17:37] there's no tension.

[19:21] That's where they are on the path and it's okay.

[19:42] Everybody in a relationship has problems, don't they?

[19:47] Right now when you say I'm in a relationship, I got problems.

[19:51] Therefore there's something wrong, something's really wrong.

[20:30] So now you're going to call in a disabled person to deal with your problems?

[20:35] your relationship right now this is a

[20:38] really sick approach to clearing your

[20:40] problems you got somebody who says we

[20:41] got a problem you don't talk to me and I

[20:43] don't talk to you and you came home week

[20:44] last week and this week I called you and

[20:46] you didn't call and I was supposed to

[20:47] call you and then you didn't do it and

[20:49] how can you do that now this is the

[20:50] consultant you're calling excuse me

[20:51] would you come in and help us I don't

[20:52] know if I can help you or not I didn't

[20:54] come home I that's the person you got to

[20:57] deal with your problems

[20:59] all right now what you can do is you can

[21:00] change all of that around you can say

[21:03] I'm in a relationship we got

[21:06] problems there's nothing wrong with that

[21:09] that's the way things are you know my

[21:12] problem is that you are different than I

[21:15] am and you think differently than I do

[21:19] and you behave differently than I do and

[21:21] you smell different than I do and you

[21:23] have all of these attitudes over here

[21:24] that I don't have nothing wrong with

[21:26] that that's the way it is when two

[21:28] people get together in a relationship

[21:30] you don't have two people becoming one

[21:33] if you do that then what you end up with

[21:35] are two half persons who wants a half a

[21:37] person in a relationship you always are

[21:39] single even if you're married and for

[21:42] you know and involved in relationship

[21:43] for you're still always single you're

[21:46] still always you your unique special

[21:49] perfect self that is not trying to

[21:54] love but who is love who lives love who

[21:59] is being

[22:02] love the same as if you pray to God and

[22:05] say God will you please help me with my

[22:07] problems and want God to do it for you

[22:10] never happen you've got to be God not be

[22:14] afraid to carry God around inside of you

[22:17] if you want to get healed you have got

[22:19] to understand that you're not going to

[22:21] get

[22:22] healed if you are asking someone else to

[22:25] heal you and ask any doctor if you know

[22:28] any surgeon particularly who's taking

[22:29] somebody into surgery and ask them which

[22:32] person has a better chance of living and

[22:35] surviving say serious surgery is it the

[22:37] one who has a will to live or is it the

[22:39] one who's just given up and the surgery

[22:41] and the cases are exactly the same all

[22:43] right but the person who has that will

[22:44] which we can't Define you can't go out

[22:46] and get a bucket full of Will and bring

[22:48] it in there it's an attitude it's an

[22:50] approach it's a belief all right that

[22:52] you can do something and when you have

[22:54] that belief about yourself then you know

[22:57] you've got a so much better uh

[22:58] opportunity to be well in your life and

[23:00] a belief is everything I don't know if

[23:02] you've ever thought of that uh I watch a

[23:04] little girl 5 years old learning how to

[23:06] swim and she's holding on to the edge of

[23:09] the pool and she wants to get over here

[23:11] to the steps and it's just uh 5T or six

[23:14] feet and she'll let go and then she'll

[23:15] hold on again and she'll let go and

[23:17] she'll hold on again and finally there

[23:19] comes a time when she lets go and goes

[23:22] for it okay you've all SE you've seen

[23:24] this with your children you've seen and

[23:27] what you're asking yourself is in the

[23:28] moment before that when she was holding

[23:30] on and then look at the moment

[23:32] afterwards does she have any different

[23:34] skills what's changed yeah the skills

[23:36] are she didn't have any new skills she

[23:37] didn't learn any skills in that second

[23:39] what she has is a belief that she can do

[23:41] it and when you believe it when you

[23:43] really just believe that you can do it

[23:45] that's what allows you to swim and when

[23:46] you think about it now do you know how

[23:48] to swim so when you dive into the water

[23:50] you don't think about that you just know

[23:51] when you dive into the water you can

[23:53] swim you don't have any necessary

[23:54] swimming skills or anything like that or

[23:57] when you get on a bicycle you get on you

[23:58] know that you're going to unless you

[24:00] believe you can't because you've never

[24:02] gone out there and tried it and worked

[24:03] on it and done it told a story of a

[24:05] patient of yours who had that very

[24:06] problem who said she didn't know how to

[24:07] ride a bicycle yeah Gail who came to me

[24:10] many years ago and you know why she said

[24:11] she couldn't ride a bicycle because her

[24:13] mother wouldn't let her get on One Cop

[24:14] Out yeah absolutely and she had these

[24:17] beautiful big white teeth and her uh

[24:19] mother had always told her you could

[24:20] fall and break your teeth and I wouldn't

[24:22] want that to happen to you so here she

[24:23] was now in her 30s and uh telling me

[24:25] that she couldn't ride a bike and she

[24:26] was in therapy

[24:28] and um I said to her okay let's go she

[24:31] said go where are we going I said well

[24:34] I've got a bicycle downstairs and I'm

[24:36] going to uh show you how to ride a bike

[24:38] I'm going to have you teach yourself how

[24:39] to do this and she said look I didn't

[24:40] come here to pay you the kind of money

[24:42] that I'm paying you to have you teach me

[24:44] how to ride a bicycle I came here to

[24:47] find out why I can't I said oh well

[24:49] you're going to need another 30 seconds

[24:50] of therapy easy Okay the reason you

[24:53] can't is because you never got yourself

[24:54] on a bicycle and until you do you never

[24:56] will know how and you just believe that

[24:58] you can't oh that's the end of that

[24:59] there's no more to talk about that now

[25:02] what we have to do is get you to get out

[25:04] there and we went downstairs and I had

[25:05] it was a woman's bike and I've helped a

[25:07] lot of people to teach themselves how to

[25:09] ride a bike and what you do when you

[25:11] teach you help someone to teach

[25:13] themselves how to ride a bike because

[25:14] you don't teach anybody how to ride a

[25:15] bike okay uh is you let them do it all

[25:18] themselves you let them hold it you let

[25:19] them balance it you let them move with

[25:21] it you let them put the pedal down and

[25:23] and and move it themselves and you stand

[25:25] back you say no when you're ready you

[25:26] know and then you move it and you hold

[25:27] on for a second then you put your foot

[25:29] back down and you you practice it and

[25:31] practice and practice that all yourself

[25:33] you know with just someone encouraging

[25:35] you and before long in just a matter of

[25:37] minutes when I tell you it was minutes

[25:39] and this woman had never been on a

[25:41] bicycle before she rode like two blocks

[25:43] on a bicycle she couldn't believe that

[25:45] she she now had a belief being to me

[25:50] means seeing the greatness and the

[25:52] uniqueness in you and never letting

[25:55] anybody else convince you to the

[25:57] contrary when people ask me come on

[25:59] you're always talking about being up and

[26:00] you're always positive and so on you

[26:01] mean to tell me that you're always that

[26:03] way this is I say yeah yeah I really am

[26:06] and it isn't because I'm out there doing

[26:09] something in an artificial way it's an

[26:12] authentic response to my having having

[26:16] gotten the junk out of me and the junk

[26:20] is the way that I used to think the way

[26:23] that I used to think think for a moment

[26:26] if you can visualize right here a clock

[26:28] a big

[26:30] clock and the hands on the clock go from

[26:32] 1 to

[26:34] 12 the clock starts right out here with

[26:36] the minute hand and it goes over towards

[26:38] the three the uh hour hand minute

[26:42] hand and that's the time in your life

[26:45] when you are moving away from yourself

[26:47] from your true self that's the time when

[26:50] you are trying to put other people down

[26:52] trying to prove that you're bigger and

[26:54] better than somebody else trying to make

[26:56] yourself right all the time time as

[26:58] opposed to uh being with somebody else

[27:02] it's like you're moving away and a lot

[27:03] of people spend a lot of time moving

[27:05] away from their true self because your

[27:06] true self is this little child is this

[27:09] beautiful little child inside of

[27:11] you that has only love and acceptance

[27:14] for everything in the world and no

[27:16] disease no absence of ease you move away

[27:19] towards the three and then you move down

[27:21] here this way and you're still moving

[27:22] away from yourself until you hit the six

[27:25] the six is the point in your life

[27:27] symbolically metaphorically here when

[27:30] you are the furthest away from yourself

[27:32] that you can be it's the low point in

[27:33] your life it's the point where many

[27:36] people break down or many people break

[27:38] down their relationships or they they

[27:40] feel full of Despair they feel full of

[27:43] hatred whatever it may be and a lot of

[27:46] people die then a lot of people are put

[27:48] into hospitals then a lot of people have

[27:50] to really seek out therapy then and so

[27:52] on and when you're at that sick there's

[27:55] another part of the clock that goes from

[27:56] 600 to 12 that I think of as uh living

[27:59] in the

[28:01] light and this is when and see this

[28:04] clock hand never can go back it can't go

[28:07] back it can only go this way it only

[28:09] goes this way as does life it only goes

[28:12] this way forward in this period This

[28:15] Place between 6 and

[28:18] 12 that's when you start coming back to

[28:21] yourself that's when that's what

[28:24] enlightenment is that's what that's the

[28:26] pathway to enlight

[28:28] when you send out that stuff that is

[28:31] destroying you that is killing you in

[28:33] one way or another and you move yourself

[28:35] back over here and eventually you get

[28:38] yourself all the way back this is the

[28:39] light over here this is the place where

[28:41] you can't go

[28:43] back you be tempted you might be tempted

[28:47] to steal you might be tempted to to to

[28:50] use anger you might even slip a little

[28:52] bit and you catch yourself I can just

[28:55] not too long ago it was uh we we we got

[28:57] a problem with our sprinkler at at the

[29:00] in my home one of the sprinkler heads is

[29:01] off and if you ever seen that happen you

[29:02] get a gusher going up there and I've

[29:04] been wanting to get that thing replaced

[29:06] for the longest time and I'm walking out

[29:08] of the bank and there's a sprinkler head

[29:10] right there in front of the bank now I

[29:13] practically own this Bank okay so I

[29:16] going to go there every day and I do a

[29:17] lot of business with this bank and I'm

[29:19] looking at this sprinkler head and I

[29:20] think you know all I have to do is just

[29:22] unscrew this thing I wasn't honoring

[29:24] they'll replace it tomorrow morning it's

[29:25] it's 98 cents or whatever so I actually

[29:28] get down there and I look and I start

[29:30] turning the sprinkler and then I start

[29:32] thinking do I want this Karma do you

[29:35] know do I want the do I want to steal do

[29:37] I want to take I know it's only a 99 and

[29:39] if I went into the bank they'd probably

[29:40] give me one anyway if I asked them and I

[29:42] turn and I just turned it back and I

[29:45] said if I want to sprinkle her head I'll

[29:46] go and buy one for myself this doesn't

[29:48] belong to me it it was just like a split

[29:50] second of weakness there or whatever but

[29:52] it Illustrated to me that I can't go

[29:54] back there I could never and there was a

[29:56] time in my life when I could have done

[29:57] that I can be absolutely Frank with that

[29:59] I could do that uh I can't go back there

[30:02] anymore that's where you start that's

[30:04] the place to St because when you get all

[30:06] of that out when that's all gone and I

[30:08] mean gone and it only comes about as a

[30:11] result of the way that you think so it's

[30:13] just changing around your approach to

[30:15] life the way that you think in life when

[30:17] that starts to go

[30:18] away what you've become filled up with

[30:21] is what your natural self is which is

[30:24] this loving accepting uh not not

[30:27] fighting the universe but instead living

[30:30] in it and going with the flow and all of

[30:33] the kinds of cliches that you've heard a

[30:35] thousand times it is that's the metaphor

[30:38] there and you see every time you try to

[30:40] go back can't do it you can't do it and

[30:43] the

[30:44] ingredients that make for a No Limit

[30:47] life are five in my opinion the first is

[30:51] quality rather than appearances you

[30:53] begin to change your thinking from

[30:58] appearances and how things look and how

[31:01] other people view me okay because every

[31:04] time you find yourself upset in life

[31:07] about anything that anyone else has said

[31:09] what you're really saying is what you

[31:11] think of me is more important than what

[31:13] I think of me all right so you change

[31:16] from appearances to what I call Quality

[31:19] thinking quality what is the quality of

[31:22] my life rather than how does it appear

[31:25] to others now do you tell yourself that

[31:29] because my friends don't like me that

[31:32] that means there's something wrong with

[31:33] me now that's see that's what you have

[31:35] to learn that another person's opinion

[31:37] is just that it's their opinion and

[31:39] that's all it is every time you are

[31:43] upset or your children are upset because

[31:46] of what somebody else says about them

[31:48] including their peers what you are

[31:50] really saying in that moment and this is

[31:52] really important what you're saying is

[31:54] what you think of me is more important

[31:57] than what I think of myself and you must

[32:00] never give anybody that kind of power

[32:02] and control over you because they will

[32:04] always have it the funny part about

[32:06] approval for those of you who really

[32:08] want it and re now I'm here to tell you

[32:11] that I like approval I enjoy it I find

[32:13] it one of the most exciting things in

[32:15] the world I like it when people read my

[32:16] books I love it when people applaud I

[32:18] like it when people uh tell me nice

[32:20] things and all I like approval I'm the

[32:22] first one to admit it what I don't do is

[32:25] I don't need

[32:28] approval there's a big difference

[32:30] between wanting approval and needing

[32:32] approval when you need approval it means

[32:35] you become immobilized when you don't

[32:37] get it from making other people's

[32:40] opinions more important now for those of

[32:41] you who say yeah but I want approval and

[32:43] I need it and if I don't get it and so

[32:45] on then understand this the people who

[32:48] get the most approval in life are the

[32:51] ones who care the least about it and the

[32:54] ones who get the least approval are the

[32:56] ones who are are always going after it

[32:58] so if you want approval in this

[33:00] paradoxical way that I'm talking about

[33:03] it stop needing it stop concerning

[33:06] yourself about ask yourself who gets the

[33:08] most approval in life think of the

[33:10] person that gets the most approval and

[33:12] you'll see that that person couldn't

[33:14] care less what other people are thinking

[33:17] they're so busy being they don't have

[33:20] time to notice what their neighbors are

[33:21] doing the RO said this he said if you

[33:24] advance confidently in the direction of

[33:27] your own

[33:28] dreams and Endeavor to live the life

[33:31] which you have

[33:33] imagined you will meet with a success

[33:37] unexpected in common

[33:39] hours what that means is that success is

[33:44] not something that you can get in life

[33:48] success is an inner process success is

[33:52] something that you bring to everything

[33:55] you do in your life it is isn't

[33:57] something you get out of what you do and

[33:59] when you get that and you learn how to

[34:02] get the junk out and Advance confidently

[34:05] doing what makes the most amount of

[34:07] sense to you based on your inner signals

[34:09] and the one issue of morality which is

[34:12] you never interfere with anybody else's

[34:14] right to do the same each person has

[34:16] their own right to advance confidently

[34:18] in the direction of their own dreams and

[34:21] when you violate that you're violating

[34:22] the principle of the universe the

[34:23] essence of the universe which is

[34:25] cooperation and

[34:27] Harmony then success will begin to chase

[34:30] you and it will come into your life and

[34:32] arrive in your life in amounts that you

[34:35] never dreamt of before that you never

[34:38] dreamt of things will start happening to

[34:40] you that you would never imagine before

[34:44] I'm working on a book right now that's

[34:45] going to be called you'll see it when

[34:46] you believe it when you start

[34:50] believing in some of these principles

[34:52] you'll start seeing things that you were

[34:54] blind to for so long when you were back

[34:56] here and the two and the three and the

[34:58] four and the five when you are moving

[35:00] away from yourself as long as you're

[35:01] moving back towards your Universal

[35:04] Essence your harmony with yourself your

[35:07] cooperation with the rest things will

[35:10] start happening in ways that you never

[35:12] dreamt of Yung called it uh

[35:17] synchronicity and we it's it's a term

[35:19] that we use to to explain how

[35:21] unexplainable coincidences sort of

[35:23] happen in our life and how come these

[35:25] things happen I'm going to share a

[35:26] couple of those with you before we

[35:28] leave

[35:30] the the quality versus appearance in

[35:33] your life means that you get that inner

[35:36] candle flame working in a way that gives

[35:39] you quality independent of what other

[35:42] people think of you maslo in defining

[35:44] self-actualizing No Limit people said

[35:47] they are independent of the good opinion

[35:50] of other people of the good opinion of

[35:53] other people independent of it they're

[35:55] so busy at advancing confidently doing

[35:58] the things that make sense and bringing

[36:00] success to changing their baby's diaper

[36:03] and bringing success to weeding their

[36:05] garden and bringing it to the job they

[36:08] bring it on the airplane so that when

[36:09] they run into somebody who is who is

[36:11] rude to them a steart is that is rude

[36:13] they don't see it as an attack on them

[36:16] it's just where they are and they send

[36:18] them love help them a little bit you

[36:20] know they're kind to when somebody wants

[36:22] to get in on the

[36:23] freeway and they're uh one old

[36:28] Temptation when they were on the one to

[36:29] the six side was to say oh yeah nobody's

[36:32] getting in front of me I'm getting there

[36:33] first it's like they slow down a little

[36:36] bit they don't have all that typ a stuff

[36:37] of having to beat somebody else and

[36:39] having to defeat somebody it is it's a

[36:41] new way of being it's a way of quality

[36:44] where your Harmony allows you to

[36:47] cooperate and you are a part of what

[36:50] this whole thing is

[36:52] about new way of being quality rather

[36:55] than appearances another new way of

[36:57] being very important living your life on

[37:00] ethics rather than rules ethics rather

[37:04] than rules all these rules all these

[37:07] ways of having to do things somebody

[37:09] else dictates to them do you know that

[37:11] some of the most immoral acts in the

[37:13] world have been perpetrated in the name

[37:15] of the rules these are the laws what do

[37:18] you think Nazi Germany was all about

[37:21] everybody doing all these horrible

[37:23] things to other people I'm only doing my

[37:25] job was the defense we all heard at

[37:27] nberg I was just doing my job if it's an

[37:30] immoral rule it's immoral to obey it and

[37:34] self-actualizing people as maslo tells

[37:36] us have rules inside of them that they

[37:38] could never o never disobey ever and

[37:41] they have to do with ethics how you

[37:43] treat people how do you think we get to

[37:45] where we are now you know who Rosa Parks

[37:48] was the woman in the South the black

[37:51] woman in the South who said not today

[37:53] I'm not going to the back today no way I

[37:56] know what the the rules are the rules

[37:57] were all over the place if you didn't

[37:58] need if you needed a reminder there were

[38:00] signs every place colored in the back

[38:03] white in the front and she said no I'm

[38:06] sitting

[38:07] here and that made all the difference

[38:11] ethics not rules when your children

[38:14] start disobeying rules that need to be

[38:17] disobeyed don't be surprised when I was

[38:20] in the

[38:22] service they had a policy on Guam where

[38:24] I was stationed which would not allow

[38:27] the guadian civilians to shop in the pxs

[38:30] in the Navy exchanges but they did allow

[38:33] all other civilians to shop in the Navy

[38:35] exchanges and

[38:36] pxs but if you were Guamanian that is if

[38:39] your skin was dark and your eyes were

[38:41] shaped a little different then you

[38:43] couldn't a clear outright violation I

[38:46] was a serviceman I was in the Navy I was

[38:49] a Communications

[38:51] cryptographer they had a a a newspaper

[38:53] on the Guam daily news and it said an

[38:55] invitation to speak your

[38:59] mind and it was a letter writing

[39:03] contest and they offered $75 to the

[39:06] first prize winner $75 this was

[39:10] 1961 that was a fortune to me that was a

[39:13] month's pay in the Navy at that time

[39:15] almost So I entered the contest and I

[39:18] knew I would win it I had already

[39:19] written a novel at that time a whole

[39:21] novel I'd written while I was on Guam I

[39:24] knew it wasn't going to be a contest I

[39:26] felt sorry for the other people entering

[39:28] it I knew I was going to win this

[39:30] unfortunately I didn't realize that when

[39:32] you're in the service and you have an

[39:35] opinion and you don't submit it to the

[39:37] chain of

[39:38] command that you can be Court marshal

[39:40] for

[39:42] that so the headlines on next week's

[39:44] Guam Daily News were US Sailor a sales

[39:48] policy of

[39:50] discrimination big hot stuff all right

[39:54] and I was called before a vice admiral

[39:55] Commander naal forces Marana

[39:58] Island and threatened with a court

[40:00] Marshal because I had disobeyed the

[40:03] rules even though the rule was immoral

[40:07] there are lots of them like that and

[40:09] when I went in and they threatened me

[40:10] with the court

[40:12] Marshal I told them this was my battle

[40:15] plan they didn't have Xerox machines in

[40:18] those days so I had to get a lot of

[40:19] carbon paper I wrote a letter to the

[40:21] president John F Kennedy and I wrote a

[40:24] letter to the Secretary of the Navy and

[40:26] I wrote a letter I was my hometown was

[40:28] Detroit I wrote a letter to the Detroit

[40:29] news and a letter to the Detroit Free

[40:31] Press telling them what was happening to

[40:34] me as a result of just expressing my

[40:36] opinion about an immoral act that was

[40:38] going on over here on Guang and I showed

[40:41] the naval uh uh vice admiral my letters

[40:45] right there I said I've only sent the

[40:47] one to the president and the secretary

[40:49] of the

[40:51] Navy these letters go to the newspapers

[40:53] across the country there's one there to

[40:54] the New York Times as well in the Los

[40:56] Angeles it was uh and I just spread them

[40:59] out before him I said if you Court

[41:00] Marshal me or punish me in any way for

[41:03] this then what's going to happen is the

[41:06] world is going to find out about this

[41:07] policy and I'm prepared I'm ready I can

[41:10] handle it and I was 20 years old at the

[41:13] time or

[41:14] 21 not only did I get a blessing from

[41:18] that because all things come in

[41:19] blessings for you I got out 90 days

[41:25] early

[41:26] and they stamped on my record Pi because

[41:30] the president took it up and sent it to

[41:32] the secretary must have and I never

[41:34] heard from him but I uh the pi on your

[41:37] record means political

[41:39] influence and they don't like anybody

[41:41] with political influence in the military

[41:43] and as soon as they saw that they said

[41:44] this is somebody we probably will be uh

[41:47] giving a discharge real soon there was

[41:49] no there was no court Marshal and in

[41:51] September of 1962 a brand new policy was

[41:54] initiated on Guam which allowed any

[41:57] civilian to shop in the Navy exchanges

[42:00] and it came

[42:02] about as a result of someone saying

[42:05] these rules are immoral and therefore

[42:09] it's immoral to obey them new ways of

[42:12] being ethics rather than rules and when

[42:16] your kids want to know why how come

[42:18] these rules are so stupid how come we

[42:19] have to do this encourage them to change

[42:22] them my mother always did that she would

[42:24] have to help me get out of the out of

[42:25] the messes that I got myself into

[42:27] because I I I did it in my impetuous

[42:29] youth I would just when they would say

[42:31] to me what's more important your job or

[42:32] school I was just

[42:34] honest I said my job of course that's

[42:38] how I felt in those days but what you do

[42:41] put out in the world is exactly what's

[42:43] coming back to you and if you find

[42:45] things coming back to you that you don't

[42:47] like and don't understand don't ask

[42:49] yourself why these things are coming to

[42:51] you ask yourself what you're doing to

[42:53] make them come back to you and when you

[42:56] start putting the responsibility on

[42:57] yourself you'll start seeing dramatic

[42:58] changes dramatic changes a new way of

[43:03] being instead of Ethics instead of rules

[43:07] ethics a new another new way of being

[43:09] instead of looking all your life for

[43:14] achievements and

[43:16] externals try living your life on

[43:19] knowledge for the sake of knowledge

[43:21] knowledge instead of achievement for the

[43:25] sake of knowledge

[43:26] being in a in a context in which you

[43:31] don't have to collect a lot of merit

[43:33] badges you don't have to collect a lot

[43:35] of a lot of uh Awards and other people's

[43:38] uh value judgments that you go to school

[43:41] or you go out into the world or you read

[43:43] or whatever it is you do because it

[43:44] makes sense to you not because of what

[43:48] somebody else is going to put on a

[43:50] transcript or where you're going to

[43:52] appear in a class list we need to help

[43:55] our children to understand and value the

[43:59] importance of knowledge for the sake of

[44:01] knowledge and doing things that make

[44:03] sense rather than taking the easy

[44:05] way knowledge rather than always trying

[44:09] to achieve we are in an achievement

[44:11] oriented society which tells us that we

[44:14] evaluate and judge a human being based

[44:17] upon how many achie achievements he has

[44:19] but most of the people who get caught up

[44:20] in that trap and are always in this

[44:22] circle of trying to get ahead trying to

[44:25] always get ahead their reward for that

[44:27] almost always is higher blood

[44:29] pressure

[44:31] ulcers early deaths and even things like

[44:34] cancer we're beginning to find out are

[44:36] related to the kinds of stresses that we

[44:39] have and remember it's a perfect

[44:41] Universe there's no stress in it there's

[44:44] only people thinking stressful

[44:46] thoughts and when you put that pressure

[44:48] on yourself to always achieve and get

[44:50] ahead of the other guy you miss what

[44:52] it's really all about there's nothing

[44:54] wrong with goals it's falling in love

[44:57] with them that's the problem it's not

[44:59] being able to be flexible and be alter

[45:01] them if you have a goal to get here to

[45:03] get $100,000 in the bank to get to this

[45:06] promotion to get two cars in your garage

[45:08] to whatever it is that your goal is and

[45:10] you're on your way to that and you're

[45:12] always working at the goal all of this

[45:13] stuff on your way to the goal is called

[45:16] striving and that's what you learn

[45:17] striving striving is a very lowlevel

[45:19] place to be when you get to your goal

[45:21] because all you've ever known is

[45:22] striving you will just always suffer

[45:24] from this disease called Mo you will

[45:26] just upgrade your goal to $200,000 four

[45:28] cars and two houses and another wife and

[45:30] a younger one and and all of these kinds

[45:32] of things if you have a goal and you

[45:35] understand that every step along the way

[45:37] is a present moment to enjoy and to live

[45:40] then the goal won't become any Obsession

[45:43] I don't have any goals in my life people

[45:44] ask me where you going to be 5 years

[45:46] from now what are you going to be doing

[45:47] what's next for you I just uh I remember

[45:50] what Lincoln said who to me was like the

[45:52] greatest person who ever sat in that

[45:54] white

[45:54] house he said i' never had a policy he

[45:57] said I just tried to do what made the

[46:00] greatest amount of sense each and every

[46:02] day of my life as I sat there as the

[46:04] President of the United States and I

[46:06] think there's there's something really

[46:08] significant in that that you don't have

[46:10] to get it all planned out and follow a

[46:12] certain pattern and do it a certain way

[46:14] if you just sort of trust your inner

[46:16] instincts and go with that and live each

[46:18] moment the goal stuff will all take care

[46:20] of itself but if you're sacrificing and

[46:22] pushing your life aside and and uh

[46:24] suffering on your way to trying to get

[46:27] someplace you'll never get there it will

[46:29] always elude you because once you get

[46:30] there you'll just have to upgrade it and

[46:32] that's because that's all you'll know

[46:34] nness is that purest form of Sanity

[46:37] living in this moment and enjoying it

[46:39] and all the rest of it will sort of work

[46:41] its way

[46:42] out another new way of being for

[46:46] me is to think of yourself in terms of

[46:49] personal Authority rather than being an

[46:53] authoritarian personal Authority

[46:56] a person who has authority never needs

[46:59] to dominate anyone else ever dominating

[47:03] doesn't become necessary in business you

[47:07] can have authority the people who have

[47:09] the most Authority are the ones who

[47:10] listen the most and the ones who are the

[47:12] most conscientious about what do other

[47:15] people have to say a person in a

[47:17] relationship who has to dominate

[47:19] somebody else and has to make the other

[47:21] person submissive shows that they don't

[47:23] have authority because they're getting

[47:25] their power not from within for

[47:27] themselves but on the basis of who they

[47:28] can control and that never lasts that

[47:32] never lasts the only thing that lasts is

[47:34] having inner power if you will know

[47:37] thyself that's what Shakespeare said

[47:39] know thyself the more you know yourself

[47:42] the more you the more you become honest

[47:45] with yourself uh honesty becomes just a

[47:47] way of life no I don't think the world

[47:50] necessarily does but you can't run your

[47:51] world you can't run your world based

[47:53] upon what the rest of the people in the

[47:54] world want or don't want to me honesty

[47:57] is like it's a Karma that goes out into

[47:59] the world how people treat you in the

[48:01] world is their karma how you react is

[48:04] yours and what when you react to it with

[48:08] dishonesty that's what you're putting

[48:10] out into the world dishonesty and when

[48:11] you put this honesty out into the world

[48:14] that's what's going to come back to you

[48:15] because what goes out is what comes back

[48:16] that all as you sow so shall you reap I

[48:19] mean it's it's in every great uh

[48:21] institution that there is in the world

[48:23] whe whether it's a religion or a

[48:24] philosophy or whatever what you put out

[48:26] is what comes back whatever you plant is

[48:28] what you're going to get back and the

[48:30] more that you put out honesty just

[48:33] because it's what you are because you

[48:35] are being honesty you're not trying to

[48:37] be honest you are just being honesty

[48:39] then that's what will come back to you

[48:41] on a regular basis and when it doesn't

[48:43] you'll just see that as another test for

[48:45] you to

[48:46] pass and finally a fifth way of being

[48:51] that is

[48:52] new for me it be has become a way of

[48:56] life it's called

[48:59] Serenity instead of

[49:01] Acquisitions the more you try to acquire

[49:04] the more you try to get the more you try

[49:06] to collect in your life and evaluate

[49:09] yourself on the basis of that the less

[49:11] Serenity you're going to have more is

[49:14] less it's almost a secret of the

[49:16] universe Serenity means inner

[49:20] peace means that you can uh find joy in

[49:23] every moment that you have in your life

[49:25] instead of always looking for it it

[49:27] means that um while you are uh uh

[49:31] driving along the countryside you know

[49:34] and seeing uh instead of saying this is

[49:37] I'm on my way to this point that you can

[49:40] open your eyes and see it with new eyes

[49:43] see see the rolling mountains see the

[49:45] grass see the deer see the sky see you

[49:48] can just stop wherever you are in this

[49:49] second wherever you are and just look

[49:51] around you and you can begin to

[49:52] appreciate just your your surroundings

[49:55] and your environment then you can begin

[49:56] to appreciate the people that are in

[49:58] your life and even the ones that are

[50:00] negative and and that you're having the

[50:02] most difficulty with you can practice a

[50:04] new way of being with them which is

[50:06] sending them love sending them flowers

[50:07] send them book send them a tape send

[50:09] them something and just see what kind of

[50:11] reaction that you get super emotional

[50:13] health is just an attitude an attitude

[50:16] is

[50:18] everything I want to uh summarize these

[50:21] new ways of being and and give you the

[50:23] most important uh ingredient on the path

[50:25] as we

[50:27] leave I said that uh it's quality in

[50:30] your life to be focusing on rather than

[50:32] appearances and it's ethics rather than

[50:34] rules and it's knowledge rather than

[50:36] achievement all the time and it's being

[50:38] personally an authority on yourself

[50:41] rather than authoritarian and trying to

[50:43] be Domin dominating someone else or to

[50:45] be dominated and serenity which is the

[50:48] name of my little go girl my youngest

[50:50] daughter

[50:51] Serena um rather than acquisition and

[50:55] accumulations and trying to prove

[50:57] yourself that way and when you get that

[50:58] Serenity which comes from the way that

[51:00] you think

[51:02] always then you will replace all of the

[51:06] other junk that keeps you back here

[51:08] between 600 and one on that clock and

[51:11] once you pass it once you get past it

[51:13] you'll never ever be able to go back

[51:15] because the light living in the light is

[51:18] a way of it's a way of being that if

[51:21] you're not there you don't get it yet

[51:23] but once you see it and once it begins

[51:25] to and take over your life you can never

[51:27] go back that be that is your purpose it

[51:29] isn't your purpose isn't to try to be

[51:32] loving your purpose is to be loved and

[51:35] only have that to give away well but

[51:38] there's one other ingredient and it's

[51:40] really crucial

[51:42] forgiveness is the vital ingredient on

[51:46] the path of

[51:48] Enlightenment and if you don't know how

[51:50] to do it then practice sending out love

[51:53] take the person or the people that that

[51:55] you're having conflict with any place in

[51:57] your life send them something you don't

[51:59] have to even do it

[52:01] physically just send them

[52:05] something that comes from inside and

[52:08] what's inside is how you choose to think

[52:11] and if you can make that love and do

[52:13] that and that is to me the

[52:16] test not whether you can love someone

[52:18] when they smell good when they do

[52:20] everything that you're supposed to but

[52:22] whether you can love someone who has

[52:23] sent you hate or anguish in your life

[52:25] and send it back you don't have to

[52:27] forget you don't have to go back but you

[52:30] got to get it out of you because it is

[52:32] blocking you and holding you back and

[52:34] when I said you'll see it when you

[52:36] believe

[52:37] it all my life I had wanted to write

[52:40] fiction a

[52:43] parable three four years ago I decided

[52:46] to go off to Hawaii to Maui to kopali

[52:48] Beach and to write now the books that

[52:50] had met the most difference in my life

[52:53] were The Little Prince

[52:57] candid

[52:58] sedara Jonathan Livingston seigo

[53:02] Illusions Alice Through the Looking

[53:04] Glass Gulliver's Travels Parables

[53:08] teaching Parables stories that can tell

[53:11] a message I went over to

[53:15] Maui and I sat down on the beach and I'd

[53:18] been talking about writing this I've

[53:19] been talking about doing this and it was

[53:21] something that and I have a little girl

[53:24] and her name is Sky

[53:26] SK K

[53:30] ye I decided to reverse the letters in

[53:32] her name e y k s and put an i in there

[53:38] which symbolizes the self

[53:40] IUS and I just created this parable of a

[53:43] woman whose name is IUS who lives on

[53:44] another planet the planet is

[53:46] Uranus and it's a duplicate mirror image

[53:49] of Earth only IAS can only see things as

[53:51] they are not as we would like them to be

[53:54] and therefore people are neurotic on

[53:55] Uranus because they have to be she gives

[53:57] the anxiety attack report if you will

[54:00] because anxiety really does attack over

[54:03] there and tells about anxiety coming in

[54:05] on the weekends and so on well my

[54:07] visitor in my Parable goes to Uranus

[54:11] meets IUS she cannot understand as he

[54:13] describes Earth why people would be

[54:15] neurotic by choice on Earth why would

[54:18] anybody be unhappy or depressed or

[54:19] miserable when they don't have when

[54:20] anxiety doesn't attack and when

[54:22] elevators really don't scare you and

[54:23] when if you want a complex on Uranus if

[54:25] you want to give a complex to your wife

[54:27] you go to the store and buy one and she

[54:28] what happened well my husband gave me a

[54:30] complex you know and it's true whereas

[54:32] on Earth if you have a complex is

[54:33] because you've chosen to have one she

[54:34] can't figure it out okay so she comes

[54:36] here observes our people and begins to

[54:39] see the secrets of the universe and

[54:42] gives us these secrets talks to the top

[54:44] leaders in our field and that was my

[54:46] Parable and I wrote it and she gives all

[54:48] of these wonderful Secrets some of which

[54:49] I've been talking about here today but

[54:52] what I want to tell you is that my wife

[54:54] gave me a license plate and the license

[54:56] plate says IUS okay it's a vanity plate

[54:59] and I was pumping gas on Federal Highway

[55:01] in Fort Lauderdale Florida and a little

[55:03] man from Greece came up to me and he

[55:06] said what means this FAS uh which is how

[55:09] you say that in Greek and I said well

[55:11] that's just a word it's my daughter's

[55:12] name spelled backward it's a parable

[55:13] that I wrote he said no he said in Greek

[55:16] that's a word I said what could that

[55:19] word be he said it means best wishes for

[55:24] all

[55:26] you'll see

[55:27] it when you believe it the great big

[55:32] erroneous Zone The Cosmic erroneous Zone

[55:34] if you get this one you'll have it and

[55:35] understand it

[55:36] all there is no

[55:40] way to

[55:42] happiness

[55:45] happiness is the

[55:47] way God bless you thank you

[55:54] for

[55:56] [Applause]

[55:59] [Music]

[55:59] [Applause]

[56:06] [Music]

[56:23] you

[56:53] e

[58:53] for

[59:23] e
