[00:46] and with something as universal important and life affirming as love at stake it is imperative that we take a careful look at the issue
[00:53] so in this video I'll be taking some of the most common complaints about love from across the internet and explore the philosophical

[03:24] Now, this is obviously a very dramatic story and today it seems incredibly extreme.
[03:29] But I bring it up because I think it hits upon an important point that often goes overlooked in discussions about love and specifically that kind of passionate, erotic love that can hit us at the early stages of dating.
[03:41] I think we all know the experience of getting to know someone and it becoming clear that our feelings for them have become out of touch with what is reasonable or rational to feel at this stage.
[03:52] You become painfully aware of the fact that you are too key.
[03:54] You think about the object of your affection far more than you would admit to anyone outside of a therapist's office and suddenly this person who you don't even
[04:02] Suddenly this person who you don't even know all that well is of supreme importance to you.
[04:06] And their attitude to you takes on a quasi metaphysical significance.
[04:11] The objectively quite trivial details of their actions become tiny opportunities for obsession.
[04:15] The time they waited before texting you back, whether they laughed at your ever so slightly cringey joke, whether they broke off eye contact just a second too early.
[04:24] Each of these probably means nothing, but your AOS adult brain hunts them through the night and investigates them for clues.
[04:30] Like a modern seer reading the future in the entrails of a cat and the patterns of amorous insanity.
[04:35] Do not end there.
[04:37] Once you are together, you start to become ever more attached to this person.
[04:42] Slowly the sense that you could do without them fades into the background.
[04:45] And they become a fixture of your life.
[04:47] You know that you could very well survive on your own, but in some sense that idea remains unconvincing.
[04:54] Your cognitive faculties are at odds with your emotional reality.
[04:58] The other person starts to feel like an all while you know that that is not strictly true.
[05:02] know that that is not strictly true you push the idea that you could even be separated far to the back of your mind.
[05:07] the concepts that your partner might one day turn around and no longer love you or die in some horrible accident or that you might be split by circumstances outside either of your control.
[05:17] all of these very real possibilities are denied.
[05:19] they are viewed as as absurd as asking whether the sun will rise tomorrow.
[05:24] you are deep in emotional investment and are willing to ride this thing as long as it goes.
[05:30] alternatively maybe something entirely different and equally strange happens.
[05:34] your partner does something that you find vaguely irritating and all of a sudden you notice other parts of them that are annoying as well.
[05:40] our Rose tinted glasses start to come off but rather than replacing them with a more compassionate kind of love one that learns to appreciate our lover for who they are.
[05:48] our minds immediately flip to the reverse.
[05:53] we replace our Ruddy spectacles with dark ones and everything our beloved does strikes us as unconscionably infected with them them.
[06:00] we resent them for not living up to our expectations while at the same time
[06:03] expectations while at the same time crying out for them to love us in the way that we want to be loved.
[06:07] Paradoxically, we both desperately want to stay and desperately want to leave.
[06:11] Our mind is torn between two poles and we start to go a bit mad.
[06:14] To take a fourth example of Love's Madness, we might allow our love to blind us to someone who is really quite awful.
[06:21] They might neglect us or hurt us repeatedly, beating us down with their scornful emotions.
[06:27] They seem to us in contempt, hate us even, yet at the same time, this only draws us in more.
[06:33] We say that the problem must be us and we chastise ourselves for not earning their approval.
[06:38] The beloved's level of affection becomes the barometer for our self-worth, and we drive ourselves crazy attempting to attain it.
[06:46] If one of our friends was in this situation, we would tell them to get out.
[06:50] Say that they are out of their minds, that almost anything will be better than their current position.
[06:54] And yet we stay inexplicably against our r Ral Wills, only realizing our own insanity after we.

[07:29] fact that we are being treated in incredibly poorly by someone who.
[07:31] incredibly poorly by someone who professes to love us I want to.
[07:33] professes to love us I want to acknowledge this point because if we're.
[07:35] acknowledge this point because if we're going to talk about love then we're.
[07:36] going to talk about love then we're going to have to get over this.
[07:37] going to have to get over this embarrassment none of us are perfectly.
[07:39] embarrassment none of us are perfectly rational especially in this sphere and.
[07:41] rational especially in this sphere and there is a reason why being hit with.
[07:43] there is a reason why being hit with Cupid's arrow was seen as almost a sign.
[07:45] of Madness why it drove Dao to the.
[07:48] funeral P even when she had an entire.
[07:50] Kingdom at her disposal many of the.
[07:52] complaints we look at today are going to.
[07:54] acknowledge the inner emotional chaos of.
[07:57] love but I want to let you know that it.
[07:58] is totally okay there is nothing to be.
[08:00] embarrassed about and that it is.
[08:02] Perfectly Natural for this topic to draw.
[08:04] Perfectly natural for this topic to draw out of us all those aspects of our characters we desperately want to hide.
[08:09] So for this video I want you to bear in mind Nietzsche's famous aphorism that which is done out of love always takes place beyond good and evil.
[08:19] With that groundwork laid, let's take a peek behind the curtain of our own affectionate insanity and see the first complaint that people have about modern dating.
[08:30] Expectations, a huge number of the issues people have with modern dating come back to the idea that men or women or both have expectations that are far too high.
[08:40] We are told that all women really want is an absurdly tall man with baby blue eyes who works in the city and that conversely every man desires a comically proportioned, impossibly beautiful young lady who is simultaneously sexually veracious and chased to the point of parody.
[08:57] And to be fair, I am sure that there are some genuinely awful expectations out there and that many of them are very shallow, but I think that these superficial high standards mask a.
[09:05] these superficial high standards mask a far deeper more philosophical.
[09:07] far deeper more philosophical expectation for love that we really ought to reconsider the idea that love will redeem us totally and unreservedly.
[09:11] to a certain extent I think this is baked into the structure of falling in love.
[09:18] the early stages of courtship are accompanied by an unprecedented flush of chemicals in our brain that almost resemble a drug binge and this helps cement the idea that there is something truly special and unique on the horizon.
[09:30] additionally we have inherited a whole host of philosophical beliefs about love that promise extraordinary things.
[09:37] notably many early church fathers began to place love and specifically Divine love as the thing that grants Humanity its dignity and meaning.
[09:46] Simon May explores this point in fantastic detail in his history of love for these early Christian thinkers love eventually rose to become the Supreme virtue that we humans should strive for.
[09:57] we see St Paul write that if we do not have love then we have nothing.
[10:01] we could do whatever great Deeds we wished have faith Beyond imagining and even the Divine gift of
[10:06] imagining and even the Divine gift of Prophecy but if we don't have love then Prophecy but if we don't have love then we gain nothing in other words love is painted as a missing ingredient and an essential component of a fulfilled and meaningful life to a certain extent.
[10:18] religious thinkers have a lot more leeway here because when they say love they are often talking partly about the Divine love of God since God is omnipotent and all loving there are all sorts of things his love might be able to do save us from hell for instance or give his only son to redeem Humanity.
[10:34] The trouble is many of us are applying this framework not to God but to other people.
[10:39] A huge number of romantic narratives present love as having an almost god-like power even when it is felt by us mere mortals.
[10:48] Some have argued that this is a peculiarity of the Romantic age that emerged in the 18th and early 19th centuries but I think we can see examples before them for instance in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet we often focus on the tragedy of the protagonists and forget that it is their love and the consequences of preventing it that caused the two vones families to put aside their deadly feud.
[11:06] It is because of
[11:08] aside their deadly feud, it is because of the misadventured, pitous overthrows of the two star-cross'd lovers that their death buries their parents' strife.
[11:15] As a side note, a lot of people really rag on Romeo and Juliet these days, but there's a reason it's a classic.
[11:19] It's not just two teenagers did stupid things, even if it is definitely sometimes that.
[11:25] This idea that love is the panacea, the cure for all your psychological and philosophical ills, has only increased in recent years.
[11:31] I cannot count the number of rom-coms whose plot is specifically about a protagonist's personal problems being plugged by another person.
[11:40] Romantic love is pitched as the solution to everything from financial stresses to existential crisis.
[11:47] Beyond this, we've inherited historical ideas from the 12th and 13th centuries about the ennobling power of love, which filtered from the Muslim world into Europe in the wake of the Crusades.
[11:57] Under this conception, it is not just that love can be a motivator to make you better, but that love in and of itself had a noble, ethical quality to it.
[12:04] This idea was famously dubbed the religion of love by C.S. Lewis in his book.

[12:13] Romanticism has only intensified this idea in everything from Jan Austin to DH

[12:18] Lawrence you see love as the answer to General problems of Life which at least
[12:20] General problems of Life which at least in theory seem to have very little to do
[12:22] in theory seem to have very little to do with romance in lady chat's lover the
[12:25] with romance in lady chat's lover the protagonist is stuck in a Loveless
[12:26] protagonist is stuck in a Loveless marriage and her Affair certainly helps
[12:28] marriage and her Affair certainly helps with that but it also manages to fix her
[12:30] with that but it also manages to fix her General onwe about life itself this is
[12:33] General onwe about life itself this is actually a really interesting staple of
[12:35] actually a really interesting staple of infidelity plots more generally the
[12:37] infidelity plots more generally the affair not only rekindles the
[12:39] affair not only rekindles the protagonist's views on Love It
[12:41] protagonist's views on Love It reinvigorates their entire conception of
[12:43] reinvigorates their entire conception of life as I said I think this is partly
[12:46] life as I said I think this is partly because falling in love does kind of
[12:48] because falling in love does kind of feel like all your problems are being
[12:50] feel like all your problems are being solved provided that that love is
[12:51] solved provided that that love is reciprocated we are filled with such
[12:53] reciprocated we are filled with such rushes of excitement that the very
[12:55] rushes of excitement that the very notion of an issue almost seems a bit
[12:57] notion of an issue almost seems a bit absurd how could we be unhappy when they
[13:00] absurd how could we be unhappy when they are there with Millennia of cultural
[13:03] are there with Millennia of cultural artifacts supporting this idea it is
[13:05] artifacts supporting this idea it is easy to wholeheartedly believe it but
[13:08] easy to wholeheartedly believe it but there is a small problem because while
[13:10] there is a small problem because while love is wonderful it is not the cure to
[13:12] love is wonderful it is not the cure to every problem we have and deep down we
[13:14] every problem we have and deep down we know this love did not save Tolstoy from
[13:17] know this love did not save Tolstoy from his depression and it will not help us
[13:19] his depression and it will not help us pay the bills the ideal conception of
[13:21] pay the bills the ideal conception of Love rubs up against the nonideal world
[13:24] Love rubs up against the nonideal world and does not quite fit this might not be
[13:27] and does not quite fit this might not be so bad if we became comfortable with
[13:28] so bad if we became comfortable with this IDE idea that love is great in a
[13:30] this IDE idea that love is great in a whole host of ways but it is not
[13:32] whole host of ways but it is not omnipotent however we often draw the
[13:34] omnipotent however we often draw the exact opposite conclusion we say that
[13:37] exact opposite conclusion we say that since this love did not solve all our
[13:38] since this love did not solve all our issues it must not be real love we might
[13:41] issues it must not be real love we might not even consciously think this in
[13:43] not even consciously think this in explicit terms but we begin to blame our
[13:45] explicit terms but we begin to blame our lover for the things that go wrong in
[13:47] lover for the things that go wrong in our own lives or as debaton wonderfully
[13:49] our own lives or as debaton wonderfully put it we confuse being unhappy around
[13:52] put it we confuse being unhappy around someone with being unhappy because of
[13:54] someone with being unhappy because of them in voltaire's candid he makes an
[13:56] them in voltaire's candid he makes an incisive critique of the idea that we in
[13:59] incisive critique of the idea that we in the best of all possible worlds he shows
[14:01] the best of all possible worlds he shows how an overly optimistic Outlook can not
[14:03] how an overly optimistic Outlook can not only Cloud our view of reality but also
[14:06] only Cloud our view of reality but also prevent us from actually bothering to
[14:08] prevent us from actually bothering to improve our situation he leans towards a
[14:10] improve our situation he leans towards a sort of moderate pessimism where we
[14:12] sort of moderate pessimism where we approach life safe in the knowledge that
[14:14] approach life safe in the knowledge that things will definitely go wrong and that
[14:16] things will definitely go wrong and that there is no total solution to the issues
[14:18] there is no total solution to the issues of existence and I think this attitude
[14:21] of existence and I think this attitude may help us in the way that we approach
[14:23] may help us in the way that we approach love it may be very comforting to
[14:25] love it may be very comforting to believe that once you are in love the
[14:27] believe that once you are in love the trials and tribulations of life will
[14:29] trials and tribulations of life will gently Fade Into the background and we
[14:30] gently Fade Into the background and we are constantly bombarded with the idea
[14:32] are constantly bombarded with the idea that this is the case but I don't think
[14:35] that this is the case but I don't think it's a concept that will serve us very
[14:36] it's a concept that will serve us very well in the long run it expects our
[14:39] well in the long run it expects our beloved to have the power of a God and
[14:41] beloved to have the power of a God and that is far too much pressure to place
[14:43] that is far too much pressure to place on a single mortal person of course
[14:46] on a single mortal person of course unlearning such a deeply rooted cultural
[14:48] unlearning such a deeply rooted cultural belief is far easier said than done but
[14:51] belief is far easier said than done but this exaggeration of Love's power can
[14:53] this exaggeration of Love's power can quickly become a destructive cycle

[14:57] because it has the further rather unfortunate effect

[15:09] Greeks had a number of different conceptions of Love among others there
[15:12] conceptions of Love among others there is Aeros erotic love filia friendly
[15:15] is Aeros erotic love filia friendly brotherly love and Agape or Universal
[15:18] brotherly love and Agape or Universal spiritual love Plato held that every
[15:20] spiritual love Plato held that every single type of Love had its place
[15:22] single type of Love had its place because all of it set us on the road to
[15:24] because all of it set us on the road to what he saw as the ultimate goal of Love
[15:26] what he saw as the ultimate goal of Love contemplating the forms of the good and
[15:28] contemplating the forms of the good and the beautiful today we tend not to agree
[15:31] the beautiful today we tend not to agree with Plato about the end goal of love
[15:33] with Plato about the end goal of love but these distinctions still remain
[15:34] but these distinctions still remain supremely helpful because the prizing of
[15:37] supremely helpful because the prizing of romantic love has also led to the
[15:39] romantic love has also led to the prioritization of Aeros Above All Else
[15:42] prioritization of Aeros Above All Else and this has potentially quite
[15:43] and this has potentially quite unfortunate consequences let's start by
[15:45] unfortunate consequences let's start by considering the Romantic concept of the
[15:48] considering the Romantic concept of the one in its classic form the one is
[15:50] one in its classic form the one is something like a soulmate they Walts
[15:52] something like a soulmate they Walts into your lives pre-made and perfect
[15:55] into your lives pre-made and perfect metaphysically destined to be with you
[15:57] metaphysically destined to be with you perhaps this idea is best expressed by
[15:59] perhaps this idea is best expressed by Aristophanes in Plato's Symposium where

[16:03] he theorizes that each of us is one half of a single multi-med organism that has
[16:06] of a single multi-med organism that has been separated by the gods we must then

[16:30] the universe doesn't mesh that well with dating apps however predestination and.
[16:33] dating apps however predestination and metaphysical specialness are not the.
[16:35] metaphysical specialness are not the only properties of the one that exist in.
[16:37] only properties of the one that exist in our cultural Consciousness there are a.
[16:39] our cultural Consciousness there are a whole other set of qualities that we.
[16:41] whole other set of qualities that we often skim over but are equally open to.
[16:43] often skim over but are equally open to philosophical critique to name just a.
[16:45] philosophical critique to name just a few there's the idea that the one is.
[16:47] few there's the idea that the one is someone with whom you are effortlessly.
[16:49] someone with whom you are effortlessly compatible that they trigger an.
[16:51] compatible that they trigger an instinctive erotic response that has a.
[16:53] instinctive erotic response that has a unique phenomenological character that.
[16:55] unique phenomenological character that all-important special feeling that they.
[16:57] all-important special feeling that they fulfill all of your emotional and.
[16:59] fulfill all of your emotional and physical needs just by themselves that.
[17:02] physical needs just by themselves that you do not argue or dispute or disagree.
[17:05] you do not argue or dispute or disagree and if you do then it's a sign of deep.
[17:06] and if you do then it's a sign of deep narrative trouble and that they know you.
[17:09] narrative trouble and that they know you intuitively almost to the point of mind.
[17:11] intuitively almost to the point of mind reading or Clairvoyance you can see so.
[17:14] reading or Clairvoyance you can see so many of these in our classic romantic.
[17:16] many of these in our classic romantic narratives when Romeo has one conversation with Juliet he is instantly.

[33:41] and it is a night and day experience I have many friends both male and female
[33:44] have many friends both male and female who say exactly the same thing I imagine
[33:46] who say exactly the same thing I imagine it has always been harder to date if you
[33:48] it has always been harder to date if you are not blessed in the department of
[33:49] are not blessed in the department of looks but as the way people meet one
[33:52] looks but as the way people meet one another becomes increasingly image-based
[33:53] another becomes increasingly image-based turning to dating apps and social media
[33:56] turning to dating apps and social media there is the general perception that
[33:57] there is the general perception that things have got much more difficult
[33:59] things have got much more difficult philosophically this makes a certain
[34:01] philosophically this makes a certain degree of sense even as far back as

[34:14] lot of people's affections though obviously not all however while very few
[34:16] obviously not all however while very few people historically argue that looks do
[34:18] people historically argue that looks do not matter there is a rich philosophical
[34:21] not matter there is a rich philosophical history of pointing out how an
[34:22] history of pointing out how an overemphasis on beauty can lead to a
[34:24] overemphasis on beauty can lead to a mountain of suffering when it comes to
[34:26] mountain of suffering when it comes to love in that very same book where Plato
[34:29] love in that very same book where Plato talks about the origins of love in
[34:31] talks about the origins of love in Beauty he also mentions that the higher
[34:33] Beauty he also mentions that the higher stages of love should aim to outgrow
[34:35] stages of love should aim to outgrow this physical infatuation while he
[34:37] this physical infatuation while he thinks we begin by appreciating physical
[34:39] thinks we begin by appreciating physical Beauty we should aim to develop into
[34:41] Beauty we should aim to develop into treasuring the beauty of ideas again
[34:44] treasuring the beauty of ideas again Plato's particular reasoning for this is

[34:48] idiosyncratic but the general thrust of this concept has definitely persisted

[35:10] Bridget Jones Diary the message is screamed from all Corners if you are LED
[35:12] screamed from all Corners if you are LED on by physical Aesthetics alone disaster
[35:15] on by physical Aesthetics alone disaster awaits the trouble is that people like
[35:18] awaits the trouble is that people like beautiful things and as far as I can
[35:20] beautiful things and as far as I can tell this isn't going away if it were
[35:22] tell this isn't going away if it were that easy to overcome we wouldn't have
[35:24] that easy to overcome we wouldn't have been telling ourselves the same warning
[35:26] been telling ourselves the same warning for over 2,000 years and yet still be
[35:28] for over 2,000 years and yet still be deceived by a winning smile however you
[35:31] deceived by a winning smile however you already know all of that so I'm not
[35:33] already know all of that so I'm not going to dwell on it here I instead want
[35:35] going to dwell on it here I instead want to point out that there is a tension
[35:37] to point out that there is a tension between how Beauty functions in society
[35:39] between how Beauty functions in society and how we treat the desire to be
[35:41] and how we treat the desire to be beautiful or the complaint that one is
[35:43] beautiful or the complaint that one is not sufficiently so on the one hand the
[35:45] not sufficiently so on the one hand the evidence that Aesthetics are important
[35:47] evidence that Aesthetics are important is all around us but on the other we
[35:49] is all around us but on the other we judge the wish to become beautiful as in
[35:51] judge the wish to become beautiful as in some way shallow from mocking people who
[35:54] some way shallow from mocking people who work out for aesthetic reasons to
[35:56] work out for aesthetic reasons to decrying makeup is the the domain of the
[35:58] decrying makeup is the the domain of the insecure there is this underlying
[36:00] insecure there is this underlying contempt often shown for people
[36:02] contempt often shown for people attempting to improve their looks or
[36:04] attempting to improve their looks or placing any importance on the at all it
[36:06] placing any importance on the at all it is often seen as vapid or indicative of
[36:08] is often seen as vapid or indicative of some personal defect if they were truly
[36:11] some personal defect if they were truly a great mind or a substantial
[36:13] a great mind or a substantial personality then surely they would not
[36:15] personality then surely they would not concern themselves with such things I
[36:17] concern themselves with such things I think this is an incredibly cruel
[36:19] think this is an incredibly cruel societal message to put out while Beauty
[36:21] societal message to put out while Beauty still clearly matters immensely for
[36:23] still clearly matters immensely for people achieving what they would like
[36:25] people achieving what they would like both out of life and Out of Love this is
[36:28] both out of life and Out of Love this is the first example of a themee that will
[36:30] the first example of a themee that will become more and more important later in
[36:31] become more and more important later in the video the way that we approach love
[36:33] the video the way that we approach love is mired in contradictions and internal
[36:36] is mired in contradictions and internal tensions For Better or Worse it seems
[36:38] tensions For Better or Worse it seems that physical attractiveness is a large
[36:40] that physical attractiveness is a large component of romantic success but we

[36:56] but that they should not matter from there it is a short step to to if you
[36:58] there it is a short step to to if you care about looks your own or those of
[37:00] care about looks your own or those of others then you are ethically deficient
[37:02] others then you are ethically deficient in some way this then creates a
[37:04] in some way this then creates a significant philosophical incentive to
[37:06] significant philosophical incentive to engage in a sort of double think on the
[37:09] engage in a sort of double think on the surface we say that beauty does not
[37:10] surface we say that beauty does not matter while secretly acknowledging that
[37:12] matter while secretly acknowledging that it absolutely does but if we tell people
[37:15] it absolutely does but if we tell people that looks do not matter then there is
[37:17] that looks do not matter then there is only one thing to conclude from romantic
[37:19] only one thing to conclude from romantic troubles it is something to do with our
[37:21] troubles it is something to do with our character again it's not that this is
[37:23] character again it's not that this is never true I'm a massive fan of
[37:24] never true I'm a massive fan of Aristotle so you'll very rarely catch me
[37:26] Aristotle so you'll very rarely catch me saying we shouldn't work on our
[37:27] saying we shouldn't work on our characters but it is a bit like telling
[37:29] characters but it is a bit like telling someone struggling with poverty that
[37:31] someone struggling with poverty that they are just not working hard enough as
[37:33] they are just not working hard enough as an explanatory hypothesis it seems to
[37:35] an explanatory hypothesis it seems to miss a huge component of the causal
[37:37] miss a huge component of the causal variables at play it also takes
[37:39] variables at play it also takes something multifaceted and complex and
[37:42] something multifaceted and complex and tells someone that it can all be boiled
[37:44] tells someone that it can all be boiled down to one fundamental fact you are not
[37:47] down to one fundamental fact you are not good enough not just descriptively but
[37:50] good enough not just descriptively but ethically as well again I think this is
[37:53] ethically as well again I think this is a problem of idealization we want to
[37:55] a problem of idealization we want to believe that love is selfless and kind
[37:57] believe that love is selfless and kind and caring about looks is sort of
[37:59] and caring about looks is sort of selfish and sort of not that kind so we
[38:01] selfish and sort of not that kind so we reconcile the contradiction by saying
[38:04] reconcile the contradiction by saying that love must not care about looks but
[38:06] that love must not care about looks but rather than this being a soothing balb
[38:08] rather than this being a soothing balb to someone's romantic issues it is
[38:10] to someone's romantic issues it is instead a cruel kind of optimism rather
[38:12] instead a cruel kind of optimism rather than recognizing that we are all partly
[38:15] than recognizing that we are all partly at the mercy of causal chains that
[38:17] at the mercy of causal chains that existed long before us and that we will
[38:18] existed long before us and that we will never have full control over any aspect
[38:21] never have full control over any aspect of Our Lives including our love lives we
[38:23] of Our Lives including our love lives we reserve every inch of fault for the
[38:25] reserve every inch of fault for the person suffering essentially we
[38:27] person suffering essentially we transform romantic failures from
[38:29] transform romantic failures from unfortunate circumstances to moral
[38:32] unfortunate circumstances to moral deficiencies with this comes a whole
[38:34] deficiencies with this comes a whole host of additional baggage like guilt
[38:36] host of additional baggage like guilt shame and a feeling of personal
[38:38] shame and a feeling of personal inadequacy but none of this needs to be
[38:41] inadequacy but none of this needs to be there it is an artifact of our idealized
[38:43] there it is an artifact of our idealized picture of love it comes from the same
[38:45] picture of love it comes from the same simplistic philosophy that brought you
[38:47] simplistic philosophy that brought you everything that happens in your life is
[38:48] everything that happens in your life is your fault and you can do anything you
[38:51] your fault and you can do anything you set your mind to to borrow a thoughts
[38:53] set your mind to to borrow a thoughts from buun chhan if we can do anything
[38:55] from buun chhan if we can do anything then the only reason we haven't is
[38:57] then the only reason we haven't is because we are not good enough far from
[38:59] because we are not good enough far from being a compassionate message to send to
[39:01] being a compassionate message to send to someone struggling with loneliness this
[39:03] someone struggling with loneliness this strikes me as almost painfully unkind
[39:07] strikes me as almost painfully unkind this is the source of thought that
[39:08] this is the source of thought that sounds friendly on the surface but
[39:10] sounds friendly on the surface but conceals a whole host of philosophical
[39:12] conceals a whole host of philosophical sins that knowingly or not only
[39:15] sins that knowingly or not only increases the sufferer's hardship to
[39:18] increases the sufferer's hardship to continue this point further I want to
[39:19] continue this point further I want to explore the relationship between the
[39:21] explore the relationship between the love of others and self-love and how we
[39:24] love of others and self-love and how we may have introduced quite a destructive
[39:26] may have introduced quite a destructive and deceptive principle into our
[39:28] and deceptive principle into our received philosophy of romance seven the
[39:31] received philosophy of romance seven the expectation of self-love as I was doing
[39:34] expectation of self-love as I was doing research for this video there was one
[39:36] research for this video there was one phrase I came across over and over again
[39:39] phrase I came across over and over again regarding dating if you can't love
[39:41] regarding dating if you can't love yourself how can you expect others to
[39:43] yourself how can you expect others to love you this was often said as if it
[39:45] love you this was often said as if it was ending the discussion a sort of mic
[39:47] was ending the discussion a sort of mic drop moment before the enlightened
[39:49] drop moment before the enlightened purveyor of this aphoristic Amorous
[39:51] purveyor of this aphoristic Amorous advice strolled into the sunset and I
[39:54] advice strolled into the sunset and I don't want to be unfair here because as
[39:55] don't want to be unfair here because as we shall see there is not nothing in
[39:57] we shall see there is not nothing in this but at the same time buried within
[39:59] this but at the same time buried within this phrase is a picture of love that I
[40:02] this phrase is a picture of love that I think both demands far too much of us
[40:04] think both demands far too much of us and obscures its genuinely helpful
[40:06] and obscures its genuinely helpful aspects my primary issue with this piece
[40:08] aspects my primary issue with this piece of advice is that it treats our
[40:10] of advice is that it treats our self-esteem and our identity formation
[40:12] self-esteem and our identity formation as something that happens in isolation
[40:14] as something that happens in isolation it paints a picture where we Retreat to
[40:16] it paints a picture where we Retreat to our cave for a little while learn to
[40:18] our cave for a little while learn to love ourselves and then emerge back into
[40:20] love ourselves and then emerge back into the public sphere with Ironclad
[40:21] the public sphere with Ironclad self-confidence ready to take Tinder by
[40:23] self-confidence ready to take Tinder by storm but I don't think this is a
[40:26] storm but I don't think this is a realistic expectation to have of people
[40:28] realistic expectation to have of people over the course of the late 19th and
[40:30] over the course of the late 19th and 20th centuries more and more thinkers

[41:33] impossible but I do think it is a lot more difficult than it's given credit

[41:53] this picture implies that love is not simply a matter of two people coming
[41:55] simply a matter of two people coming together already complete and

[41:59] self-sufficient but rather a process of mutual development this is echoed in the
[42:01] mutual development this is echoed in the works of someone like St Thomas aquinus
[42:03] works of someone like St Thomas aquinus who described loving yourself loving
[42:05] who described loving yourself loving others and loving God as all part of one
[42:08] others and loving God as all part of one shared project this is a far less
[42:10] shared project this is a far less individualistic picture of both love and
[42:12] individualistic picture of both love and self-esteem instead of self-love being
[42:15] self-esteem instead of self-love being something that you learn by yourself and
[42:17] something that you learn by yourself and then bring into the world it is
[42:19] then bring into the world it is something that you and your beloveds
[42:20] something that you and your beloveds support one another in doing by willing
[42:23] support one another in doing by willing the good of the other for the sake of
[42:24] the good of the other for the sake of the other we learn both that we are love
[42:27] the other we learn both that we are love able and how to love others thereby
[42:29] able and how to love others thereby creating the conditions for self-love to
[42:32] creating the conditions for self-love to emerge or at least this is how I
[42:33] emerge or at least this is how I interpret this idea for dooi it is often

[44:38] that the only reason that they have not abandoned us is because they are yet to
[44:40] abandoned us is because they are yet to discover our fatal flaw we conceive of
[44:42] discover our fatal flaw we conceive of ourselves as in some way metaphysically
[44:45] ourselves as in some way metaphysically tainted they only like me we say to
[44:47] tainted they only like me we say to ourselves because they haven't
[44:49] ourselves because they haven't discovered that I am secretly an ugly
[44:51] discovered that I am secretly an ugly repulsive Goblin this can turn the
[44:54] repulsive Goblin this can turn the experience of being loved into a source
[44:56] experience of being loved into a source of guilt we feel like we are conning our
[44:58] of guilt we feel like we are conning our beloved because if they still love us
[45:00] beloved because if they still love us then we must be playing some sort of
[45:01] then we must be playing some sort of trick on them we exist with the
[45:03] trick on them we exist with the permanent anxiety of being discovered
[45:06] permanent anxiety of being discovered either way we are apt to run from the
[45:08] either way we are apt to run from the very person we most desire but therein
[45:11] very person we most desire but therein lies the Fatal tension it is hard to
[45:13] lies the Fatal tension it is hard to convince yourself you are lovable
[45:15] convince yourself you are lovable without love but at the same time it is
[45:17] without love but at the same time it is hard to believe that you are loved if
[45:18] hard to believe that you are loved if you hold the Deep seated to belief that
[45:20] you hold the Deep seated to belief that you are unlovable I certainly don't have
[45:22] you are unlovable I certainly don't have a complete solution here but I will

[45:57] internal tensions that make finding and maintaining love less like discovering a
[45:59] maintaining love less like discovering a treasure and more like keeping 18 plates
[46:01] treasure and more like keeping 18 plates spinning at once and that our failure to
[46:04] spinning at once and that our failure to acknowledge this sets us up for future

[46:45] who touches upon this point is Esther Perell she has written extensively on
[46:48] Perell she has written extensively on how to keep romance alive within
[46:49] how to keep romance alive within long-term relationships and she talks
[46:51] long-term relationships and she talks constantly about the two properties of
[46:53] constantly about the two properties of closeness and distance according to her
[46:56] closeness and distance according to her too much has a tendency to kill desire
[46:59] too much has a tendency to kill desire we forget that our partner is another
[47:01] we forget that our partner is another person that they are independent and
[47:02] person that they are independent and that they are not simply an extension of
[47:04] that they are not simply an extension of ourselves it is hard to feel intense
[47:06] ourselves it is hard to feel intense attraction for someone who you view as
[47:08] attraction for someone who you view as analogist to your arm but on the other
[47:10] analogist to your arm but on the other hand too much distance and this can
[47:12] hand too much distance and this can create distress anxiety and damage the
[47:15] create distress anxiety and damage the very foundations of the relationship in
[47:17] very foundations of the relationship in her therapeutic experience it is only
[47:19] her therapeutic experience it is only when we simultaneously feel safe and
[47:22] when we simultaneously feel safe and secure with someone but also recognize

[47:37] represented by the two lovers becoming one flesh and the separateness aspect is
[47:39] one flesh and the separateness aspect is found in the analogy of the married
[47:41] found in the analogy of the married couple being like Christ and his church
[47:43] couple being like Christ and his church two separate entities for Aristophanes
[47:46] two separate entities for Aristophanes it was the existence of a destined other
[47:48] it was the existence of a destined other half versus the fact that they have been
[47:50] half versus the fact that they have been cleaved in Twain for Tolstoy it was the
[47:52] cleaved in Twain for Tolstoy it was the illicit availability of count vonsky and
[47:54] illicit availability of count vonsky and the tragedy of Anna's pre-existing
[47:56] the tragedy of Anna's pre-existing marriage for DH Lawrence it is the
[47:58] marriage for DH Lawrence it is the intense passion that exists between lady

[48:12] tension between self and other togetherness and distance makes love
[48:14] togetherness and distance makes love inherently unstable by this I don't mean
[48:17] inherently unstable by this I don't mean that it is always chaotic but rather
[48:19] that it is always chaotic but rather that it does not rest in a single state
[48:21] that it does not rest in a single state it is a bit like shopen how's Will

[48:44] self-sufficiency that is what is required to succeed in this world a hard
[48:47] required to succeed in this world a hard exterior and the unwillingness to rely
[48:49] exterior and the unwillingness to rely on anyone else from the men going their
[48:52] on anyone else from the men going their own way to the boss babes The Cult of
[48:54] own way to the boss babes The Cult of individualism buries its clause deep but
[48:57] individualism buries its clause deep but on the other hand we tell people that
[48:59] on the other hand we tell people that love is a supreme virtue that it is
[49:01] love is a supreme virtue that it is ennobling kind generous patient that all
[49:05] ennobling kind generous patient that all you need is love and that a life without
[49:07] you need is love and that a life without love is simply meaningless we tell

[49:11] people that love is one of the most important human Pursuits and then

[49:25] someone who wants us in a slightly selfish fashion we are present presented
[49:27] selfish fashion we are present presented with a sanitized idea of love that is
[49:29] with a sanitized idea of love that is purely good incredibly chased and stable
[49:32] purely good incredibly chased and stable and then we reach adulthood and a whole
[49:34] and then we reach adulthood and a whole chunk of us find that this is not all we
[49:36] chunk of us find that this is not all we want we also want excitement and for our
[49:39] want we also want excitement and for our lover to sometimes desire us as an
[49:41] lover to sometimes desire us as an object at the same time we want to be
[49:43] object at the same time we want to be respected and cherished yet also be on
[49:45] respected and cherished yet also be on the receiving end of someone's
[49:47] the receiving end of someone's occasional selfishness we want them to
[49:49] occasional selfishness we want them to want the best for us but avariciously we
[49:52] want the best for us but avariciously we want excitement and comfort risk and
[49:55] want excitement and comfort risk and security stability and a rocking boat we
[49:58] security stability and a rocking boat we want sweetness Vitality gentleness
[50:00] want sweetness Vitality gentleness ferocity tenderness Instinct
[50:02] ferocity tenderness Instinct Independence and possession we want our
[50:05] Independence and possession we want our lover to be both our best friend and a
[50:07] lover to be both our best friend and a beautiful stranger to know them better
[50:09] beautiful stranger to know them better than we know ourselves and yet for them
[50:10] than we know ourselves and yet for them to remain full of mystery the
[50:13] to remain full of mystery the contradictions abound the tensions are
[50:15] contradictions abound the tensions are endless and even if not everyone is
[50:17] endless and even if not everyone is instantiated in every individual person
[50:19] instantiated in every individual person some of them normally are love as
[50:21] some of them normally are love as experienced by real existent people is
[50:24] experienced by real existent people is the desire for a Harmony of a whole
[50:26] the desire for a Harmony of a whole series of qualities that are at war with
[50:28] series of qualities that are at war with one another and when we are at our most
[50:30] one another and when we are at our most unguarded say when writing or reading
[50:33] unguarded say when writing or reading romantic fiction we often admit this I
[50:36] romantic fiction we often admit this I say all of this to bring one idea to the
[50:38] say all of this to bring one idea to the Forefront on almost any plausible
[50:40] Forefront on almost any plausible philosophical analysis love is difficult
[50:43] philosophical analysis love is difficult and only gets more difficult over time
[50:45] and only gets more difficult over time there is something in the image of being
[50:47] there is something in the image of being hit by an arrow or of Romeo's sweet
[50:50] hit by an arrow or of Romeo's sweet sorrow at parting from Juliet or of
[50:52] sorrow at parting from Juliet or of hadway following the phrase what is love
[50:55] hadway following the phrase what is love with baby don't hurt me perhaps this is
[50:57] with baby don't hurt me perhaps this is the biggest myth we tell about love of
[51:00] the biggest myth we tell about love of all that it is meant to be easy
[51:02] all that it is meant to be easy straightforward instinctive and low
[51:04] straightforward instinctive and low effort this perhaps sets us up for
[51:06] effort this perhaps sets us up for failure more than anything else and it
[51:08] failure more than anything else and it is an Insidious thing to tell people
[51:10] is an Insidious thing to tell people struggling with love surely it is more
[51:13] struggling with love surely it is more realistic to see love as the well- one
[51:15] realistic to see love as the well- one reward of years of toil growth and
[51:18] reward of years of toil growth and development as we learn to integrate a
[51:20] development as we learn to integrate a whole another person into our lives and
[51:22] whole another person into our lives and us into theirs as we slowly develop the
[51:24] us into theirs as we slowly develop the skill of loving someone how they wish to
[51:27] skill of loving someone how they wish to be loved and teaching them to do the
[51:28] be loved and teaching them to do the same for us Aristotle used to say that
[51:31] same for us Aristotle used to say that for many skills and virtues there was no
[51:33] for many skills and virtues there was no other way to learn them but by personal
[51:35] other way to learn them but by personal practice contemplation and habituation
[51:38] practice contemplation and habituation he recognized that almost any personal
[51:40] he recognized that almost any personal quality worth having was not going to be
[51:42] quality worth having was not going to be a simple matter of knowledge that we can
[51:44] a simple matter of knowledge that we can reason out in an academy rather we will
[51:47] reason out in an academy rather we will have to investigate the world for
[51:48] have to investigate the world for ourselves with the approach that we are
[51:50] ourselves with the approach that we are learning a skill developing practical
[51:52] learning a skill developing practical wisdom and improving little by little at
[51:55] wisdom and improving little by little at our chosen Pursuit I would gently
[51:57] our chosen Pursuit I would gently suggest that we start to think of love a
[52:00] suggest that we start to think of love a bit more like this it has numerous
[52:02] bit more like this it has numerous strengths whether alone or with our
[52:04] strengths whether alone or with our lovers we can start to look at our
[52:06] lovers we can start to look at our romantic failings hiccups or
[52:08] romantic failings hiccups or difficulties not as evidence of our
[52:10] difficulties not as evidence of our fundamental unlovability but of our
[52:12] fundamental unlovability but of our status as students at Cupid's feet we
[52:15] status as students at Cupid's feet we can follow in the experimental attitude
[52:17] can follow in the experimental attitude of John Dewey and see this aspect of Our
[52:20] of John Dewey and see this aspect of Our Lives as not simply a goal to be
[52:22] Lives as not simply a goal to be achieved but rather a series of Trials
[52:24] achieved but rather a series of Trials to be slowly refined over time when we
[52:27] to be slowly refined over time when we inevitably mess up in love we can view
[52:30] inevitably mess up in love we can view it like we've just knocked over our
[52:31] it like we've just knocked over our paintbrushes or written a cliche in our
[52:33] paintbrushes or written a cliche in our notebook it no longer supports the
[52:36] notebook it no longer supports the hypothesis that we are broken but rather
[52:38] hypothesis that we are broken but rather that we are learning a lifelong skill
[52:40] that we are learning a lifelong skill and one we won't be finished with when
[52:42] and one we won't be finished with when we close our eyes for the final time
[52:44] we close our eyes for the final time hopefully with a heart bursting with
[52:47] hopefully with a heart bursting with love I can hear people already saying
[52:50] love I can hear people already saying that this idea of Love requiring
[52:52] that this idea of Love requiring constant effort and learning and skill
[52:55] constant effort and learning and skill and development has robbed it of much of
[52:57] and development has robbed it of much of its luster so allow me to say why I
[52:59] its luster so allow me to say why I don't think that is true and in any case
[53:02] don't think that is true and in any case that it is far better than the
[53:04] that it is far better than the alternative nine romantic nihilism in
[53:08] alternative nine romantic nihilism in all my research for this video I still
[53:10] all my research for this video I still did not come across a singular term to
[53:12] did not come across a singular term to describe the general malays that many
[53:14] describe the general malays that many people feel about the concept of Love at
[53:16] people feel about the concept of Love at the moment and I would like to propose
[53:18] the moment and I would like to propose one romantic nihilism in my favorite
[53:21] one romantic nihilism in my favorite analysis of philosophical nihilism John
[53:23] analysis of philosophical nihilism John Stewart identifies that nihilism begins
[53:26] Stewart identifies that nihilism begins a reaction to broken promises for
[53:28] a reaction to broken promises for hundreds of years we were told that
[53:30] hundreds of years we were told that there was a God and afterlife and our
[53:32] there was a God and afterlife and our lives had inherent meaning and gradually
[53:34] lives had inherent meaning and gradually people started to view these as false
[53:37] people started to view these as false and more than that as lies with nothing
[53:40] and more than that as lies with nothing to fill the void they became cynical and
[53:42] to fill the void they became cynical and pessimistic in a moment of empathy ner
[53:45] pessimistic in a moment of empathy ner describes how these nihilists had put
[53:47] describes how these nihilists had put their entire trust and faith into a set
[53:49] their entire trust and faith into a set of ideas only to discover that they were
[53:51] of ideas only to discover that they were wrong all along now they feel foolish
[53:54] wrong all along now they feel foolish forever believing them they display the
[53:56] forever believing them they display the same sort of General undifferentiated
[53:59] same sort of General undifferentiated skepticism towards the world that many
[54:01] skepticism towards the world that many who leave a cult describe in effect they
[54:03] who leave a cult describe in effect they leap from one extreme to the other from
[54:05] leap from one extreme to the other from optimists and idealists to pessimists
[54:08] optimists and idealists to pessimists and cynics and I think nature is really
[54:10] and cynics and I think nature is really on to something here about the dangers
[54:12] on to something here about the dangers of idealization in any sphere we like to
[54:15] of idealization in any sphere we like to think that if we present a Rosy and
[54:17] think that if we present a Rosy and optimistic view of the world or of key
[54:19] optimistic view of the world or of key Concepts then that will protect us and
[54:21] Concepts then that will protect us and if they turn out to be false well then
[54:23] if they turn out to be false well then we'll just adjust our views accordingly
[54:25] we'll just adjust our views accordingly but this is not necessarily the case if
[54:28] but this is not necessarily the case if nature is right then once the ideal
[54:30] nature is right then once the ideal Falls away we just as often collapse
[54:32] Falls away we just as often collapse into total despair we reject
[54:34] into total despair we reject wholeheartedly the thing that we used to
[54:36] wholeheartedly the thing that we used to desire recognizing that it is
[54:38] desire recognizing that it is unachievable in the way we wanted we
[54:40] unachievable in the way we wanted we fall into resentment and Scorn we view
[54:43] fall into resentment and Scorn we view the object of our wishes as childish and
[54:46] the object of our wishes as childish and we declare that it is dead this analysis
[54:49] we declare that it is dead this analysis fits almost uncannily well with how many
[54:51] fits almost uncannily well with how many of our attitudes to romance have shifted
[54:54] of our attitudes to romance have shifted strangely it is easier to go from from
[54:56] strangely it is easier to go from from Love is Everything To Love doesn't exist
[54:59] Love is Everything To Love doesn't exist without our philosophies ever resting in
[55:00] without our philosophies ever resting in the Middle Ground the promises of love
[55:03] the Middle Ground the promises of love we were fed as children are being broken
[55:05] we were fed as children are being broken and we are reacting in a classically
[55:07] and we are reacting in a classically 19th century fashion straight from the
[55:09] 19th century fashion straight from the frying pan of the ideal to the fire of
[55:12] frying pan of the ideal to the fire of the cynic if love is not to be
[55:14] the cynic if love is not to be effortless endlessly glorious and solve
[55:16] effortless endlessly glorious and solve every one of our existential problems
[55:18] every one of our existential problems then we don't want it anymore and I
[55:21] then we don't want it anymore and I think this is a real shame because at
[55:23] think this is a real shame because at heart I am a total romantic I firmly
[55:25] heart I am a total romantic I firmly believe in the powerful things love can
[55:27] believe in the powerful things love can do be it romantic platonic or familiar I
[55:30] do be it romantic platonic or familiar I think that it can stand alone free from
[55:32] think that it can stand alone free from its mythical adornments it can bring us
[55:35] its mythical adornments it can bring us someone to commit to someone to know us
[55:37] someone to commit to someone to know us and for us to know them it does have the
[55:39] and for us to know them it does have the potential to make us Kinder and more
[55:41] potential to make us Kinder and more caring it is a natural way to infuse
[55:44] caring it is a natural way to infuse life with felt value it can bring out
[55:46] life with felt value it can bring out our selfless and generous Natures it can
[55:48] our selfless and generous Natures it can truly be patient kind non-judgmental and
[55:52] truly be patient kind non-judgmental and non-transactional we can learn to love
[55:54] non-transactional we can learn to love someone in a way that makes them feel
[55:56] someone in a way that makes them feel truly fulfilled and teach them how to do
[55:58] truly fulfilled and teach them how to do that to us it is not that love will be
[56:01] that to us it is not that love will be the cure to every one of our ills but we
[56:03] the cure to every one of our ills but we have every reason to think that it can
[56:05] have every reason to think that it can be a real pillar of our meaning but we
[56:07] be a real pillar of our meaning but we also have to recognize that it will come
[56:09] also have to recognize that it will come with struggle and strife endless effort
[56:12] with struggle and strife endless effort tension and contradiction however if we
[56:14] tension and contradiction however if we continue to think that love must be easy
[56:17] continue to think that love must be easy that it is endlessly Pleasant without
[56:19] that it is endlessly Pleasant without trouble or conflict that our partners
[56:21] trouble or conflict that our partners must be Gods rather than men and that
[56:23] must be Gods rather than men and that the ability to love is innate rather
[56:25] the ability to love is innate rather than taught then I fear the greater
[56:27] than taught then I fear the greater sides of love may be forever out of our
[56:29] sides of love may be forever out of our reach so if there is one idea you
[56:32] reach so if there is one idea you consider from this video I hope it is
[56:34] consider from this video I hope it is this much like a lover love itself is
[56:37] this much like a lover love itself is neither Angel nor demon it starts out
[56:40] neither Angel nor demon it starts out seeming faultless then shows its flaws
[56:42] seeming faultless then shows its flaws and then finally we learn to love those
[56:45] and then finally we learn to love those flaws too but this is not our god-given
[56:47] flaws too but this is not our god-given gift but rather the end result of long
[56:50] gift but rather the end result of long protracted efforts to learn how to love
[56:53] protracted efforts to learn how to love to see our lovers as humans damaged and
[56:55] to see our lovers as humans damaged and battered by by the world fractured and
[56:57] battered by by the world fractured and faulty in ways that will drive us insane
[57:00] faulty in ways that will drive us insane but when all is said and done we see
[57:03] but when all is said and done we see them as they are and we care for them
[57:05] them as they are and we care for them all the same safe in the knowledge that
[57:07] all the same safe in the knowledge that they are looking at our broken bruised
[57:10] they are looking at our broken bruised and slightly mad psyches and thinking
[57:13] and slightly mad psyches and thinking the exact same thing the more false
[57:16] the exact same thing the more false promises we sell people now the more
[57:19] promises we sell people now the more future nihilists we will create when the
[57:21] future nihilists we will create when the scales finally fall from their eyes and
[57:24] scales finally fall from their eyes and they wonder what else we have lied about
[57:28] they wonder what else we have lied about but as always I encourage you to think
