[00:01] and um this is a little bit of an experiment for me because I put together this PowerPoint presentation and it's the first time I've ever done one so you guys are like my guinea pigs to do this way of of teaching something to use visual things and so we'll see how it goes so um yeah when uh Veronica invited me to come and give a teaching on the disillusion of the five elements which I'm going to give tomorrow um I also said to her well I could also give this talk on mandelas because it's a lecture that I'm giving as I travel around to try to educate people on the importance of mandelas and um the kind of power that they have for producing blessing energy for purifying the elements because I'm currently involved in a
[01:02] because I'm currently involved in a project where we are building project where we are building threedimensional mandelas in three threedimensional mandelas in three countries in the United States in Mexico countries in the United States in Mexico and in Nepal for the purpose of and in Nepal for the purpose of dispelling obstacles and promoting dispelling obstacles and promoting peace and I find that people don't peace and I find that people don't really un it's like a it's like a new really un it's like a it's like a new thing people they haven't seen this they thing people they haven't seen this they haven't heard about it and they don't haven't heard about it and they don't really understand what is the benefit of really understand what is the benefit of building these building these mandelas so um mandelas so um so part of what I have to do is educate so part of what I have to do is educate people and people and um so anyway so we'll be talking about um so anyway so we'll be talking about mandelas in a very general way I'm not mandelas in a very general way I'm not giving detailed teachings on mandelas giving detailed teachings on mandelas from a practitioner's point of view so from a practitioner's point of view so those of you who are familiar with those of you who are familiar with Mandela practice um a lot of this will Mandela practice um a lot of this will be be review and for some of you maybe this is review and for some of you maybe this is new I think the word Mandela is pretty new I think the word Mandela is pretty common now I know it's in the English.

[02:35] there we've got one okay so when you see that you see those shapes you think that's a Manda yeah.
[02:48] okay yeah okay so we're going to explore that a little bit what is a Mandela what does Mandela mean.

[03:07] okay so the word Mandela is a Sanskrit word it is a Sanskrit word and in
[03:10] word it is a Sanskrit word and in tibetan the word is
[03:11] tibetan the word is kilor
[03:14] kilor kilor and so Mandela literally means a
[03:18] kilor and so Mandela literally means a circle it does mean a circle it refers
[03:20] circle it does mean a circle it refers to something that's round a discoid
[03:24] object but it's made of two words
[03:27] Mand which refers to the Ence or the
[03:31] best part the highest point and la which
[03:35] is to complete it so one way that that
[03:39] word Mandela is translated into English
[03:42] is a sacred
[03:46] enclosure and in tibetan the word kilor
[03:49] means a center with a surrounding
[03:52] environment so there is this idea that
[03:54] there's a center there's something
[03:57] that's in the center and then something
[04:00] that surrounds that
[04:08] Center this is from long Chena a very
[04:11] Center this is from long Chena a very great master in the nma tradition a
[04:15] great master in the nma tradition a mandala is an integrated structure
[04:18] mandala is an integrated structure organized around a unifying
[04:28] Center so in general we can say mandelas
[04:31] Center so in general we can say mandelas are kind of sacred geometry right maybe
[04:34] are kind of sacred geometry right maybe some of you have done some studies on
[04:36] some of you have done some studies on sacred geometry the power of circles or
[04:39] sacred geometry the power of circles or the meaning of triangles and squares
[04:42] the meaning of triangles and squares they're they utilize the concepts in
[04:45] they're they utilize the concepts in sacr
[04:47] sacr Geometry they're a metaphor for a
[04:49] Geometry they're a metaphor for a universal order there's something very
[04:52] universal order there's something very symmetrical about
[04:54] symmetrical about mandas
[04:56] mandas okay they're
[04:58] okay they're cosmological they represent the
[05:01] cosmological they represent the essential structure of the universe so
[05:04] essential structure of the universe so Mandela designs are a literal Cosmic
[05:08] Mandela designs are a literal Cosmic map they're they're a they describe a
[05:11] map they're they're a they describe a process of creation they're a creation
[05:14] process of creation they're a creation myth in a way
[05:17] it's a model of a perfected way
[05:21] it's a model of a perfected universe so what I think what you said something about the universe
[05:24] yes the Mandela is a representation of a perfected universe
[05:27] meaning a universe that is orderly that follows certain laws
[05:30] that is orderly that follows certain natural laws
[05:32] a Mandela represents wholeness and can be seen as a model for the
[05:34] can be seen as a model for the organizational structure of life
[05:39] organizational structure of life itself a cosmic diagram that reminds us
[05:43] itself a cosmic diagram that reminds us of our relation to the infinite
[05:45] the world that extends both beyond and within our body bodies and minds
[05:48] so in this sense a Mandela design is used as an object to meditate on to
[05:51] is used as an object to meditate on to experience the unity of our microcos
[05:54] our
[06:12] experience the unity of our microcos our microcosm with the microcosm with the macrocosm.
[06:14] so often times in practice our macrocosm so often times in practice our bodies are spoken of as mandelas.
[06:28] mandalis are patterns of mandalis are patterns of creation and are seen in creation and are seen in nature.
[06:33] for example we see these kinds of nature for example we see these kinds of ideas of ideas of of a central source and from that Center emanates or arises or raise and symmetrical patterns radiating out from the center.
[06:43] or this is my favorite where I live we get lots of these snowflakes and I love to think of the snowflakes as millions of little mandelas descending down and they all have these beautiful crystalline structures they're all little buddha.
[07:14] structures they're all little buddha fields but again the idea this is these fields.
[07:16] but again the idea this is these are patterns that are formed in nature.
[07:19] are patterns that are formed in nature with a center radiations in a geometrical and symmetrical way.

[08:16] Simatics how sound manifest into simatics how sound manifest into form in these Mandola patterns.
[08:32] So a Mandela begins from a central source point which emanates out in four or more directions and is contained and surrounded by a circular boundary.
[08:44] So the center point of the Mandola is considered to be its source.
[08:49] The beginning and from that emanates out and then is contained by a circular boundary.
[09:04] Sacred Mandela designs have been used for thousands of years in many cultures.
[09:10] For example in India the earliest forms are found in the vas over the centuries the style and
[09:17] vas over the centuries the style and Designs have evolved as spiritual
[09:19] Designs have evolved as spiritual traditions and practices have evolved so
[09:23] traditions and practices have evolved so we find these for example in the Hindu
[09:26] we find these for example in the Hindu vas and the upper left is the Shri
[09:28] vas and the upper left is the Shri yantra Maybe some of you have seen that
[09:30] yantra Maybe some of you have seen that that's very very
[09:33] common and in the in the lower right
[09:36] common and in the in the lower right corner are Hindu devotees creating a
[09:40] corner are Hindu devotees creating a sand mandala according to their
[09:46] tradition we see these designs in the
[09:49] tradition we see these designs in the churches the beautiful rose
[09:52] churches the beautiful rose Windows the central Source radiating out
[10:00] these are the mosques in
[10:02] these are the mosques in Iran the same idea that Central Source
[10:06] Iran the same idea that Central Source the
[10:07] the absolute in this case
[10:10] absolute in this case Allah manifesting out in all
[10:15] directions Navajo sand
[10:18] directions Navajo sand paintings same Cosmic principles the Aztec Celtic Aztec Celtic designs you see this theme repeated designs you see this theme repeated again and again in different cultures again and again in different cultures over centuries over Millennium and finally the Tibetan style Millennium and finally the Tibetan style of Mandela which is what we're going to of Mandela which is what we're going to be focusing on so this type of Mandela is called a palace architecture style is called a palace architecture style that evolved in the 12th and 13th that evolved in the 12th and 13th century because from The Source Point in this case you see a deity in the center the deity as the source this is the deity as the source this is M and from them emanating out in the
[11:19] M and from them emanating out in the four directions creating a square Palace.
[11:23] Four directions creating a square Palace which contains the energy, okay?
[11:26] So this is called a palace architecture style of Mandela.
[11:30] This became very common in Tibet.
[11:33] And what most of us know when we see mandalas, for instance, the Kala Chakra Mandela.
[11:37] There, this is what we're looking at.
[11:39] We're looking at the center point radiating out to form the palace square.
[11:45] And then around that is the circle which surrounds it and holds it.
[11:56] Mandalas are the architecture of Enlightenment, a three-dimensional Palace containing architectural elements.
[12:03] Containing architectural elements symbolizing various aspects of divinity or aspects of the Buddha nature.
[12:13] So in that case, they're used for practice.
[12:15] They're used as an object of practice.
[12:17] They're used as an object of our meditation to develop those qualities.
[12:21] meditation to develop those qualities those Divine qualities of the deity and those Divine qualities of the deity and the mandelas are seen as the dei's pure land.
[12:26] the mandelas are seen as the dei's pure land so the palace is the mind of the deity.
[12:29] land so the palace is the mind of the deity the deity being in the center and they're radiating out their light in the form of these colors.
[12:33] is the mind of the deity the deity being in the center and they're radiating out their light in the form of these colors.
[12:36] their light in the form of these colors and the palace representing the mind of the deity.
[12:40] and the palace representing the mind of these colors and the palace representing the mind of the deity.
[12:43] and the palace representing the mind of the deity much like a stupa maybe those of deity much like a stupa maybe those of many of you are familiar with stupa.

[13:38] universe and the universe was believed to originate from the primordial sounds.

[13:42] of Mantra these sacred sounds contained the.
[13:45] Mantra these sacred sounds contained the genetic patterns of beings and things so.
[13:48] genetic patterns of beings and things so for those of you who do tantric deity.
[13:51] for those of you who do tantric deity practice we always begin with a seed.
[13:55] practice we always begin with a seed syllable a sound and that sound.
[13:59] syllable a sound and that sound vibration then generates into the form.
[14:01] vibration then generates into the form of the deity so the sound is seen as the.
[14:06] of the deity so the sound is seen as the creative.
[14:07] creative beginnings of in this case the.
[14:15] universe okay so now let's go into each of those steps with more.

[14:24] detail so we start with the center or the source that is perceived to come
[14:28] the source that is perceived to come from the V ness of space or the absolute
[14:32] from the V ness of space or the absolute void and from this space or the void
[14:36] void and from this space or the void comes the first sound so when we're when
[14:40] comes the first sound so when we're when we're dealing with these mandelas that
[14:41] we're dealing with these mandelas that are associated with deities the sound or
[14:45] are associated with deities the sound or the seed syllable will be the seed
[14:46] the seed syllable will be the seed syllable of that particular
[14:49] syllable of that particular deity so for example we have
[14:53] deity so for example we have H
[14:55] H H radiating out sound vibrations and
[15:05] Light which then
[15:07] Light which then becomes a
[15:09] becomes a deity so in Mandola designs when you
[15:12] deity so in Mandola designs when you look at the very center you're either
[15:14] look at the very center you're either going to find the seed
[15:17] going to find the seed syllable or you're going to find the
[15:21] syllable or you're going to find the emblem that they hold in their hand so
[15:24] emblem that they hold in their hand so in the right hand this is vaja Kaya's.
[15:26] in the right hand this is vaja Kaya's Mandela there's a Pera inside there.
[15:30] Mandela there's a Pera inside there or you're going to find the deity those.
[15:33] or you're going to find the deity those three things you're going to find at the center.
[15:34] three things you're going to find at the center the seed syllable the primordial sound.
[15:37] center the seed syllable the primordial sound or the emblem that represents that deity.
[15:41] sound or the emblem that represents that deity what they hold in their hand or the deity.

[15:44] the deity themselves that's the second generation.
[15:53] then from that Central Source the deity that Divine in enlightened mind.
[15:56] generation then from that Central Source the deity that Divine in enlightened mind that light radiates out in all directions.

[16:03] directions but is divided into four okay representing the four directions the four elements.
[16:05] four okay representing the four directions the four elements so here we have the central source.
[16:08] elements so here we have the central source and four directions so we have five.
[16:11] source and four directions so we have five so for those of you who are familiar with the idea of the five Buddha families the five wisdoms the.
[16:14] five so for those of you who are familiar with the idea of the five Buddha families the five wisdoms the.

[16:29] This is where where we get this differentiation from the ground of space that absolute nature comes the sound and from there we get the five elements.
[16:35] It's the first the first manifestation into form and that's represented in the Mandela by this division of these four sections of the Palace of the square represented by four colors.
[17:00] Okay so the white for the water element the yellow for the Earth element red for the fire element and green for the air element.
[17:11] And the center is always seen as the element of space from the space these four elements manifest and this forms the palace.
[17:18] This is the manifestation into form form the palace so any Mandela that you look at.
[17:27] palace so any Mandela that you look at any of this Palace architecture style of any of this Palace architecture style of Mandela this is what you're going to see.
[17:33] Mandela this is what you're going to see from the center Source in some way.
[17:36] from the center Source in some way representing these four colors or the.

[17:44] elements okay so in the center we have the Buddha family of the five.

[18:49] of you doesn't matter where you go okay so it's a it's a four directions that
[18:52] so it's a it's a four directions that moves along with
[18:53] moves along with you so in the front of the deity it's
[18:57] you so in the front of the deity it's East the color is white
[18:59] East the color is white element is
[19:01] element is water and the afflictive emotion or the
[19:04] water and the afflictive emotion or the poison associated with It is anger and
[19:07] poison associated with It is anger and when that's purified it becomes the
[19:10] when that's purified it becomes the mirror like
[19:13] wisdom and now we have the activities
[19:16] wisdom and now we have the activities the four
[19:19] activities and the activity of the East
[19:21] activities and the activity of the East is
[19:22] is pacification creating Peace So this
[19:25] pacification creating Peace So this light has the effect of generating peace
[19:29] light has the effect of generating peace piece It's associated with the morning
[19:32] piece It's associated with the morning and associated with spring of the Four Seasons okay so if East is in the front.
[19:47] Seasons okay so if East is in the front then to the right is then to the right is South the color is South the color is yellow element is yellow element is Earth the emotion is pride and when that's purified it becomes the wisdom of equinity the activity is enriching or increasing the time of day is noon and the season is summer then behind you would be the West.
[20:24] summer then behind you would be the West the color is the color is red element is red element is fire the emotion is desire grasping.
[20:37] fire the emotion is desire grasping attachment wisdom is Discerning wisdom
[20:39] attachment wisdom is Discerning wisdom or sometimes called discriminating
[20:43] or sometimes called discriminating wisdom and the activity is
[20:46] wisdom and the activity is empowering the time of day is the
[20:49] empowering the time of day is the afternoon evening and the season is the
[20:51] afternoon evening and the season is the fall
[21:00] and then to the left of you will be the
[21:02] and then to the left of you will be the north color is green sometimes it's
[21:06] north color is green sometimes it's black sometimes it's dark blue usually
[21:09] black sometimes it's dark blue usually it's green or
[21:10] it's green or black the element is
[21:14] black the element is air the emotion is jealousy and when
[21:17] air the emotion is jealousy and when that's purified it's all accomplishing
[21:20] that's purified it's all accomplishing wisdom the activity is
[21:23] wisdom the activity is subjugation or the removal of
[21:27] subjugation or the removal of negativity time time of day is
[21:29] negativity time time of day is night and the season is
[21:38] winter I see people
[21:40] winter I see people writing yeah
[21:44] writing yeah okay okay so let's put that all together
[21:47] okay okay so let's put that all together let's look at this
[21:49] let's look at this Mandela and what did we just learn the
[21:53] Mandela and what did we just learn the center is the
[21:56] source okay and in this case it looks
[21:58] source okay and in this case it looks like there's an emblem in the center so
[22:00] like there's an emblem in the center so we have to decide is it a seed syllable
[22:02] we have to decide is it a seed syllable is it an emblem or is it the deity that
[22:05] is it an emblem or is it the deity that tells you then from that radiate out in
[22:09] tells you then from that radiate out in the four directions so you see the deity
[22:13] the four directions so you see the deity or the it's facing the
[22:15] or the it's facing the East White see the four directions
[22:19] East White see the four directions represented four
[22:27] elements the square that is emanated
[22:29] elements the square that is emanated from the central deity becomes its
[22:32] from the central deity becomes its Palace these multi-level palaces
[22:34] Palace these multi-level palaces represent the sacred container of the
[22:37] represent the sacred container of the deity or the field of the deity's mind
[22:40] deity or the field of the deity's mind like I use the analogy of a stupa stupa
[22:43] like I use the analogy of a stupa stupa is considered to be the mind of a
[22:45] is considered to be the mind of a Buddha in each of the four walls of the
[22:48] Buddha in each of the four walls of the palace is a sacred Gateway a door with
[22:51] palace is a sacred Gateway a door with an archway with a wheel of law on top
[22:55] an archway with a wheel of law on top each door is protected by a guardian
[23:01] okay so now let's let's look at this you
[23:03] okay so now let's let's look at this you can see this is a different Mandela but
[23:05] can see this is a different Mandela but you can still see the same kinds of
[23:08] you can still see the same kinds of patterning so in this case we have a
[23:10] patterning so in this case we have a seed syllable in the center radiating
[23:13] seed syllable in the center radiating out in the four directions with the four
[23:15] out in the four directions with the four colors and you can see on the edges
[23:18] colors and you can see on the edges there that's those are doors what looks
[23:21] there that's those are doors what looks like this sort of extra Square that's
[23:23] like this sort of extra Square that's representing a Gateway or a door through
[23:26] representing a Gateway or a door through which you have to pass through in in
[23:28] which you have to pass through in in order to enter into the sacred precincts
[23:31] order to enter into the sacred precincts of the
[23:32] of the deity and on the sides there are sort of
[23:35] deity and on the sides there are sort of like these round things and that's
[23:38] like these round things and that's actually the
[23:39] actually the archway which is sort of laying flat
[23:42] archway which is sort of laying flat down so that we can see it but they're
[23:45] down so that we can see it but they're actually standing up and on the top or
[23:50] actually standing up and on the top or the Dharma wheel you can see very small
[23:52] the Dharma wheel you can see very small on the tops of each one is the Dharma
[23:55] on the tops of each one is the Dharma wheel representing the wheel of law
[23:58] wheel representing the wheel of law so it's important to to know that when
[24:01] so it's important to to know that when we look at these mandelas like this
[24:04] we look at these mandelas like this these two-dimensional images of mandelas
[24:07] these two-dimensional images of mandelas this is like looking at a floor plan of
[24:09] this is like looking at a floor plan of a building it's like looking from the
[24:12] a building it's like looking from the top down on a building we are actually
[24:16] top down on a building we are actually looking at a three-dimensional
[24:19] looking at a three-dimensional image okay so in this Square you see all
[24:23] image okay so in this Square you see all these different sort of square within
[24:25] these different sort of square within Square within Square that's representing
[24:28] Square within Square that's representing levels of a

[25:57] purifications as we purify each of those poisons that are rep presented by those
[25:59] poisons that are rep presented by those four directions it we these Guardians
[26:03] four directions it we these Guardians are there guarding the Gateway until
[26:05] are there guarding the Gateway until we're ready to
[26:09] enter here's another one okay in the

[26:44] you'll be able to to see these parts and know what they
[26:48] mean okay so a Mandela is surrounded by
[26:53] mean okay so a Mandela is surrounded by a circumference a flaming barrier which
[26:57] a circumference a flaming barrier which forbids access and also represents the
[27:00] forbids access and also represents the burning of ignorance dispelling the
[27:02] burning of ignorance dispelling the darkness of er error so the outermost
[27:05] darkness of er error so the outermost boundary is Flames the outermost ring
[27:10] boundary is Flames the outermost ring are flames and the purpose of the Flames
[27:13] are flames and the purpose of the Flames is to not allow anything into the sacred
[27:16] is to not allow anything into the sacred precincts but it also represents burning
[27:19] precincts but it also represents burning off our
[27:20] off our ignorance then the second ring is a ring

[29:33] wrathful deities mandelas often include
[29:36] wrathful deities mandelas often include the eight
[29:38] the eight cemeteries situated in the eight
[29:41] cemeteries situated in the eight Directions They symbolize the five
[29:43] Directions They symbolize the five senses and the three levels of ordinary
[29:46] senses and the three levels of ordinary mind which bind us to cyclic existence
[29:49] mind which bind us to cyclic existence they're placed on the outer boundaries
[29:52] they're placed on the outer boundaries of the Sacred
[29:53] of the Sacred Space each graveyard or Cemetery
[29:56] Space each graveyard or Cemetery contains specific objects such as a tree
[29:59] contains specific objects such as a tree a stupa a stream a yogi representing the
[30:02] a stupa a stream a yogi representing the quest to become liberated from cyclic
[30:04] quest to become liberated from cyclic existence and therefore enter the pure
[30:06] existence and therefore enter the pure land of the deities
[30:08] land of the deities Mandela okay so you don't find these in
[30:11] Mandela okay so you don't find these in all mandelas but you find them in the
[30:12] all mandelas but you find them in the mandelas of most wrathful deities and so
[30:17] mandelas of most wrathful deities and so for instance in this
[30:19] for instance in this Mandela this is Guru drapo a wrathful
[30:22] Mandela this is Guru drapo a wrathful form of of uh paba and here we have an
[30:26] form of of uh paba and here we have an emblem in the center radiating out as
[30:29] emblem in the center radiating out as Lotus petals radiating out the four
[30:32] Lotus petals radiating out the four directions to create the palace and you
[30:34] directions to create the palace and you can clearly see all the different levels
[30:36] can clearly see all the different levels of the palace the four doorways and
[30:39] of the palace the four doorways and gateways and in each Gateway is a
[30:43] gateways and in each Gateway is a protector then we have the outermost
[30:45] protector then we have the outermost fire ring and in that is the ring of DJs

[32:18] this monks creating the sand mandalas this is probably in in in the
[32:20] mandalas this is probably in in in the west this is the most common form of the
[32:23] west this is the most common form of the Mandela that people are familiar with
[32:25] Mandela that people are familiar with many people have seen them being created
[32:28] many people have seen them being created ated or have seen images of them so this
[32:30] ated or have seen images of them so this is mostly what we know mostly what we
[32:32] is mostly what we know mostly what we know in the west are sand mandalas and
[32:35] know in the west are sand mandalas and these are made primarily for preparation
[32:37] these are made primarily for preparation for initiations and empowerments they're
[32:40] for initiations and empowerments they're part of the initiation process where the
[32:43] part of the initiation process where the students will come in and at a certain
[32:45] students will come in and at a certain point in the initiation they they look
[32:47] point in the initiation they they look at the Mandela the Mandela is kept
[32:49] at the Mandela the Mandela is kept hidden and then at one point when the
[32:51] hidden and then at one point when the mandelas open the students Gaze on the
[32:53] mandelas open the students Gaze on the mandol and and it's part of the
[32:55] mandol and and it's part of the initiation process and then when the
[32:57] initiation process and then when the initiation is over the Mandela is swept
[33:01] initiation is over the Mandela is swept up in a certain way and all those grains
[33:04] up in a certain way and all those grains of sand are put into the ocean so it's
[33:06] of sand are put into the ocean so it's not kept permanent these mandelas are
[33:09] not kept permanent these mandelas are were never kept permanent and nowadays
[33:11] were never kept permanent and nowadays they're starting to keep them permanent
[33:13] they're starting to keep them permanent so people can look at them as a as an
[33:15] so people can look at them as a as an art form but they were never kept
[33:18] art form but they were never kept permanent they you know they would never
[33:20] permanent they you know they would never display Mandola images on the wall for
[33:22] display Mandola images on the wall for example okay they were they were
[33:24] example okay they were they were considered to be sacred part of the
[33:27] considered to be sacred part of the initiation and empowerment process and

[37:46] you can go inside this is a Mandela building that you can go inside and see
[37:49] building that you can go inside and see the deities inside this is in parping
[37:52] the deities inside this is in parping Nepal

[38:24] mandelas are not and you have to know to go there you have to know where to find
[38:26] go there you have to know where to find them and they're usually on the top
[38:27] them and they're usually on the top floors of the monasteries and westerners
[38:30] floors of the monasteries and westerners don't know to ask to go up to the top
[38:33] don't know to ask to go up to the top floor to see the mandelas that are up
[38:35] floor to see the mandelas that are up there so a lot of people don't know
[38:37] there so a lot of people don't know about the know about them and they're
[38:40] about the know about them and they're much more strict about who sees them so

[38:45] you have to find somebody with the key it's the same shrand also has little

[40:32] Sango pal which is Guru rm's Palace it's all carved out of wood and it's huge and
[40:35] all carved out of wood and it's huge and the detail and there's so much going on
[40:37] the detail and there's so much going on in there you see the four Direction
[40:39] in there you see the four Direction Kings you see the
[40:42] Kings you see the protectors there's a little bit of a
[40:44] protectors there's a little bit of a closeup you can kind of see the inside
[40:47] closeup you can kind of see the inside the Gateway there's the protector inside
[40:49] the Gateway there's the protector inside the
[40:51] Gateway this is all carved out of
[40:55] Gateway this is all carved out of wood and it has these Rainbow Lights
[40:58] wood and it has these Rainbow Lights radiating out with these little deities
[41:01] radiating out with these little deities riding on the rainbows and you can see
[41:04] riding on the rainbows and you can see these little bendus of light so it's
[41:07] these little bendus of light so it's representing that these are essentially
[41:09] representing that these are essentially made of light they're made of light and
[41:20] sound it shows a little bit the
[41:24] sound it shows a little bit the scale this is in Sim
[41:32] so these are the real not the real
[41:34] so these are the real not the real mandalas but the traditional mandalas
[41:37] mandalas but the traditional mandalas are these
[41:38] are these three-dimensional structures and the
[41:41] three-dimensional structures and the sand paintings are a symbol of that okay
[41:44] sand paintings are a symbol of that okay they're a symbol of these full mandals
[41:46] they're a symbol of these full mandals that express everything in there there's
[41:48] that express everything in there there's little you can see these little round
[41:50] little you can see these little round seed syllables representing the sounds
[41:52] seed syllables representing the sounds that are emanating from there but
[41:54] that are emanating from there but everything in there tells a story of
[41:56] everything in there tells a story of enlightenment
[42:02] okay so how Mandela's
[42:08] benefit so first of all those who
[42:11] benefit so first of all those who participate in creating a sacred Mandela
[42:14] participate in creating a sacred Mandela building constructing making
[42:17] building constructing making mandelas they Place themselves within
[42:19] mandelas they Place themselves within the realm of the
[42:22] the realm of the deity so while in the west we tend to
[42:25] deity so while in the west we tend to see them as works of art they're not a
[42:28] see them as works of art they're not a creation but rather a reconstruction of
[42:31] creation but rather a reconstruction of something that already
[42:34] something that already exists the act of creating a Mandela
[42:37] exists the act of creating a Mandela restoring a Mandela and preserving a
[42:39] restoring a Mandela and preserving a Mandela generates tremendous Merit so in
[42:42] Mandela generates tremendous Merit so in the Buddhist countries like Bhutan and
[42:44] the Buddhist countries like Bhutan and Sim and Nepal just like stupas the
[42:48] Sim and Nepal just like stupas the community takes care of these mandelas
[42:50] community takes care of these mandelas some of them are very old in the
[42:52] some of them are very old in the monasteries and they see that as um a
[42:55] monasteries and they see that as um a source of great blessings
[42:59] the other benefit is The Liberation upon
[43:02] the other benefit is The Liberation upon seeing and in the Buddhist tantric
[43:04] seeing and in the Buddhist tantric tradition there's different ways that
[43:08] tradition there's different ways that beings are liberated through the
[43:09] beings are liberated through the skillful actions of the Buddha and some
[43:12] skillful actions of the Buddha and some of them are Liberation upon tasting so
[43:15] of them are Liberation upon tasting so special medicines like mrip that we
[43:17] special medicines like mrip that we taste or Liberation upon touch the
[43:20] taste or Liberation upon touch the guru's blessing for example there's also
[43:23] guru's blessing for example there's also Liberation upon seeing just by seeing
[43:26] Liberation upon seeing just by seeing that it plants the seeds in our
[43:28] that it plants the seeds in our mindstream and purifies the mind so that
[43:31] mindstream and purifies the mind so that we aren't reborn in a lower realm and
[43:34] we aren't reborn in a lower realm and stupas have the same benefit stupas are
[43:37] stupas have the same benefit stupas are also Under The Liberation upon seeing
[43:42] benefit so anybody who looks at a
[43:45] benefit so anybody who looks at a Mandela even if they don't understand it
[43:48] Mandela even if they don't understand it it plants seeds in the mindstream so
[43:50] it plants seeds in the mindstream so that's why one reason why now the
[43:53] that's why one reason why now the Tibetan llamas are much more open about
[43:55] Tibetan llamas are much more open about doing sand mandala displays in museums
[43:58] doing sand mandala displays in museums and letting the public come in and see
[44:00] and letting the public come in and see the mandelas because they feel like it's
[44:02] the mandelas because they feel like it's planting seeds in people's
[44:06] minds they also act as a kind of
[44:09] minds they also act as a kind of broadcasting station amplifying and
[44:12] broadcasting station amplifying and spreading the energy of your prayers
[44:14] spreading the energy of your prayers your intentions in all directions
[44:16] your intentions in all directions pervading through the five elements and
[44:18] pervading through the five elements and this also is like a stupa if you say
[44:20] this also is like a stupa if you say prayers or do practices in front of a
[44:22] prayers or do practices in front of a stupa the energy of that is magnified
[44:26] stupa the energy of that is magnified 100 fold so whenever you go to Asia and
[44:29] 100 fold so whenever you go to Asia and you any place where you see stupid
[44:31] you any place where you see stupid you'll see people doing their practice
[44:33] you'll see people doing their practice in front of them and they really do act
[44:35] in front of them and they really do act as a broadcasting
[44:38] as a broadcasting station so doing your practice doing
[44:40] station so doing your practice doing Retreats doing your prayers in front of
[44:43] Retreats doing your prayers in front of these sacred images um amplifies the
[44:48] these sacred images um amplifies the effect they're used as an object for our
[44:50] effect they're used as an object for our visualization practice very specific
[44:53] visualization practice very specific tantric practices creates a resonant
[44:56] tantric practices creates a resonant pattern in our subtle
[44:58] pattern in our subtle body that's really strange
[45:02] body that's really strange okay actually this is going remarkably
