[01:51] But if you have two or more triggered at once, which is what usually happens in these big freakout videos that you see on YouTube, that's when composure pretty much turns
[02:02] that's when composure pretty much turns into combat.
[02:04] This model explains narcissists, entitled people, power games, manipulation, but it gives you the tools to diffuse it in real time.
[02:15] Identity is essentially this is who I think I am.
[02:19] Do not threaten that.
[02:21] So identity threats are the most common and they're the most misread.
[02:24] This identity piece of the triangle that deals with a person's self-concept.
[02:28] This is our internal story.
[02:30] Who we believe we are, what we deserve, how other people should treat me.
[02:35] When that's threatened, people protect identity at all costs.
[02:36] They lie, they attack, they play the victim, they posture, and they don't do any of this to deceive.
[02:44] It's all survival.
[02:47] Because to the ego, identity equals safety.
[02:49] And that's a big deal.
[02:53] The subcategories of identity are a self-concept breakdown.
[02:55] This is not who I am.
[02:57] They get defensive when their behavior doesn't match self-image.
[02:59] There's narrative violation.

[04:22] Avoid being helpless, exposed, or someone dictating what we're supposed to do.
[04:26] This is where we get reactants, right?
[04:29] So control is survival to the ego.

[04:32] So if that's taken away, even for a minute, the human animal jumps out to react because their mind is screaming, I'm not in charge and I can't handle that.
[04:41] So the categories of the control are a loss of perceived autonomy.
[04:45] This is the don't tell me what to do.
[04:48] Even if it's polite, direction can feel like a little power grab for some people.
[04:52] So the key here isn't control, it's perceived control.
[04:56] And the other one is the frame hijacking.
[04:58] don't try to rewrite what just happened.
[05:00] So if their version of reality is being overruled, they resist.
[05:04] reality is being overruled, they resist pretty hard.
[05:07] Then we have a public power disruption.
[05:09] This is like them saying, "Yeah, you just made me look like I'm not in charge here."
[05:13] Then we have the control deficit carryover.
[05:16] This is the biggest one you see on these internet videos and people freaking out in public.
[05:19] Control deficit carryover.
[05:22] This is I have no power in my life, so I'm going to take it right here.
[05:27] This explains the road rage stuff.
[05:28] the entitlement, the bullying, the Karen videos.
[05:31] It's people who feel powerless in the rest of their life.
[05:34] They're and they're overcorrecting in the one place they feel they can maybe take charge.
[05:38] And then we have an uncertainty collapse.
[05:41] If I can't predict what's next, I feel super unsafe.
[05:42] So, the brain hates that unpredictability.
[05:44] And especially to this person where their ego is tied into it.
[05:47] In this side of the triangle, this is where you're going to hear, "You're not listening to me.
[05:49] You're twisting my words around.
[05:50] I don't have to take this.
[05:53] I don't have to stand here and listen to this.
[05:54] And this one escalates super fast because control threats get louder before they get
[06:05] Threats get louder before they get resolved.
[06:07] They have to go up before they resolved.
[06:09] They have to go up before they can come down cuz I have to feel like I can come down cuz I have to feel like I'm in control before I can relax again.
[06:11] I'm in control before I can relax again.
[06:14] So, it's just restoring dominance or the illusion of dominance.
[06:16] A lot of people think they're arguing about a topic with their spouse, a loved one, co-orker, whatever.
[06:18] You're fighting for frame control.
[06:20] You're trying to establish agency and power.
[06:22] And if you try to win that battle, you lose the person.
[06:24] If you feed them back a sense of control, you dissolve the threat completely.
[06:27] Then we have the safety side of this triangle.
[06:30] This is am I still secure, included, and protected right now?
[06:32] So has nothing to do with physical danger.
[06:38] Data safety and social position are the two big things here.
[06:40] And people react fast.
[06:43] They posture, shut down or they try to dominate.
[06:46] These aren't rational.
[06:47] It's just ego survival.
[06:49] So the subcategories of the safety threat side.
[06:52] First we have the status threat and this is you just made me feel
[07:08] threat and this is you just made me feel small.
[07:10] So this isn't always about rank.
[07:12] could be intelligence or IQ, maybe how good someone looks.
[07:15] After that we have a hierarchy disruption.
[07:17] And this is where we have a power imbalance and I'm losing.
[07:22] That's that's kind of what's going on there.
[07:23] And then we have contrasting authority.
[07:25] This is you're outclassing me or you're out hierarchying me.
[07:26] And I can feel that this someone enters the room with more composure, more confidence, more charisma.
[07:35] And it accidentally, not on purpose, accidentally makes other people feel unsafe, socially unsafe.
[07:42] Insecurity activation is probably the final one here.
[07:43] And this is the you just reminded me I am not enough.
[07:49] This is the big silent killer.
[07:51] People can get triggered by your success or how present you are just because it highlights their internal lack.
[07:59] Maybe a a spouse who picks a fight right after a really vulnerable moment.
[08:04] They get vulnerable and super open about something and then pick a fight.
[08:05] That happens to a lot of
[08:08] pick a fight.
[08:08] That happens to a lot of people.
[08:08] Safety is a the trickiest one.
[08:11] Safety is a the trickiest one because it shows up as like sarcasm,
[08:13] because it shows up as like sarcasm, sabotage.
[08:16] They'll show it by changing the tone, flipping the meaning, or pull you off center.
[08:18] If I can pull you off center, I can make myself feel socially safe again.
[08:20] And keep in mind, we're talking about those other people.
[08:22] Um, but if you're honest, you know that we're also talking about you and we're talking about me included.
[08:24] So, chaos kind of starts when you combine a lot of these triggers.
[08:27] if I have identity and control being threatened where basically you're saying I'm not who I believe I am and I can't fix that.
[08:29] So that's kind of a narcissistic rage territory.
[08:30] If I have a control and safety together, this is panic.
[08:40] This is somebody saying I can't direct what's happening and now I don't feel secure.
[08:42] So it's control and safety and those usually go together.
[08:45] If there's identity and safety, this is you
[09:08] there's identity and safety, this is you just made me feel small and like I don't belong here.
[09:11] It's a shame spiral.
[09:13] That's all it is.
[09:15] But if what if you have all three?
[09:18] This is I don't know who I am.
[09:20] I can't control this.
[09:22] And I don't feel socially safe.
[09:24] So that's the full system failure.
[09:26] All of the three threats.
[09:39] You get all the crazy stuff.
[09:40] If you have an endless argument that never stops that just keeps kind of looping back to the beginning.
[09:44] This is identity and control that you're dealing with.
[09:46] If you have all of a sudden someone storming out or yelling or screaming and it's a sudden spike, that's control and safety.
[09:54] What does a Chihuahua do?
[09:55] It's fear and there's a safety threat, right?
[09:57] I need to bark loud all of a sudden.
[09:59] If you have somebody mocking you or kind of really passive aggressive behavior, this is identity and safety threat.
[10:06] If you have rage and maybe a shutdown and fear in
[10:09] rage and maybe a shutdown and fear in the eyes, you probably have all three of those things.
[10:13] Your job is to see all that clearly.
[10:16] Step one is recognize what shift took place.
[10:23] Step two, diagnose.
[10:25] So, here's how to tell if it's identity threat, sudden defensiveness, justifications, correcting how they're being perceived.
[10:29] they're rewriting something that just happened.
[10:32] they need to be right or innocent or smart or the cute one or the victim.
[10:38] If it's control, it's talking over other people, demanding their turn to speak.
[10:42] So, listen up for you're not hearing me, let me finish.
[10:44] You don't get to decide that they're trying to restore agency.
[10:48] And if we get to the safety piece, this is when somebody's getting sarcastic, they're getting socially weird, there's some subtle distancing going on, they're posturing, passive aggression.
[10:59] they shift to defensiveness or attachment.
[11:00] That's when you hear the must be nice, whatever.
[11:03] Uh, you just don't get it.
[11:06] Your next move should target the exact threat.
[11:08] If identity is threatened, you're going to reflect their self-concept respectfully.
[11:09] Never
[11:12] their self-concept respectfully.
[11:12] Never ever argue about what they are.
[11:15] You ever argue about what they are.
[11:15] You always offer clarification instead of correction.
[11:17] You might say something like, you know, I I know that you're not the kind of person who would do that intentionally.
[11:18] Absolutely.
[11:18] Or you might say, I've really apologized.
[11:20] Let me be more clear.
[11:21] I'm not questioning you, just the situation.
[11:24] If it's control that's being threatened, you might say, you know, I'm sorry.
[11:25] Let's back up.
[11:27] Maybe I said something wrong.
[11:27] I I really want to figure this out together with you.
[11:31] What do you need from me right now?
[11:33] You're giving them control, right?
[11:33] It's a little placebo, but it's you're giving them control.
[11:35] And then if it's a safety, you might say something like, "That's a totally fair response."
[11:37] And this stuff gets tense really fast.
[11:39] And I promise you're good.
[11:41] Nobody here is judging you.
[11:43] We're on the same side.
[11:45] Even if we don't see it the same way, I promise you, we're on the same side.
[11:47] And step four, watch for it stacking up.
[11:48] So always address the most activated threat first.
[11:50] Then step five, use the triangle to avoid triggering in the first place.
[11:52] So remember, remove pressure from that corner of the triangle.
[11:55] Speak to what their brain
[12:13] triangle. Speak to what their brain needs to reeregulate itself and avoid arguing with behavior.
[12:19] arguing with behavior. Speak to the threat underneath the behavior.
[12:21] One of your friends suddenly acts super cold after you say, "Hey, man. I just made 50K today or whatever."
[12:28] You mention a success. They go quiet or make a little sarcastic comment.
[12:34] That's a safety threat. Safety threat. So, it's the comparison triggered insecurity.
[12:39] And you might say something like, "Man, you have been absolutely killing it, too. We have totally different winds and the exact same mission."
[12:46] You might say something like that. reassure them of the safety.
[12:55] A frame is the invisible lens that defines what is happening and who's in charge of the meaning of a situation.
[13:06] Every conversation you've ever had in your life has a frame.
[13:10] It's never ever ever what's being said. It's what's being assumed. Is it a fight or a
[13:15] being assumed.
[13:15] Is it a fight or a discussion?
[13:18] Is it blame or solution or discussion?
[13:18] Is it blame or solution or is this person trying to help me or dominate me?
[13:20] So, whoever controls the frame will always control the context.
[13:25] So, it's the difference between someone saying you're attacking me versus we're just disagreeing.
[13:31] So, that's very very different.
[13:33] Those are two very different frames.
[13:35] Same situation, very different meaning because the frame is different.
[13:38] So, once the frame shifts, the power dynamic changes big time.
[13:40] And if you don't catch that, you're going to find yourself reacting inside of that other person's version of reality.
[13:41] So, let me go through the 10 things you should permanently delete and never do for the rest of your life in a frame attack.
[13:43] Ever.
[13:45] Never, ever, ever.
[13:50] Number one, never explain yourself under pressure.
[13:52] If you explain under pressure, you are submitting to a frame.
[13:54] Think about the phrase, you know, I I don't think you meant to, but that question is designed to put me in a position of justifying myself, and that's not a role
[14:17] justifying myself, and that's not a role that I'm taking on right now.
[14:19] Number two, never ever argue about your motive.
[14:23] If you're debating your own intent, they have already redefined your identity.
[14:30] So, for this one, think about the phrase, you know, that maybe you didn't intend to, but that comment puts me in a spot where I'm defending what kind of person I am, and I'm I'm not stepping into that box.
[14:41] Number three, never take the bait on character questions.
[14:43] This is the biggest one that you'll hear from narcissists.
[14:45] All of them are traps.
[14:48] 100% of character questions are traps.
[14:50] The goal is not to understand you.
[14:52] It's to label you.
[14:54] Think about the phrase, "Framing me like that forces me to argue about who I am.
[14:59] I can see the play and I'm I'm not stepping into it and I'm not saying you did that on purpose.
[15:03] Always give them the bridge to retreat.
[15:04] Right?
[15:06] So that's why we say maybe you didn't mean to.
[15:08] I don't think you meant to do that.
[15:11] Uh number four, never apologize to deescalate.
[15:14] This is what moms tend to do cuz they prioritize peace over everything, right?
[15:16] Moms want peaceful
[15:18] everything, right?
[15:18] Moms want peaceful homes and and peaceful environments.
[15:20] So homes and and peaceful environments.
[15:20] So do dads.
[15:23] A lot of dads do.
[15:23] A false apology is admission of guilt in their frame.
[15:30] In that frame, especially in conflict.
[15:32] A phrase you might do here is, "I totally understand where you're coming from, but that would that would be me apologizing just to make this go away, and I owe you more honesty than that, and I respect us both too much to do that."
[15:46] Number five, never match emotion to prove your point.
[15:49] And this is the one most of us are guilty of.
[15:51] If you match intensity, it feels powerful.
[15:55] It feels good for a minute, but it signals emotional surrender.
[16:00] You have emotionally surrendered to that person's frame.
[16:02] You stay calm.
[16:05] And you might say something like, "If I raise my voice in order to be heard, then I've already given up control here."
[16:11] And that's not how I operate.
[16:13] I will never raise my voice in order to be heard.
[16:15] Number six, never accept their language
[16:19] Number six, never accept their language without precision.
[16:19] Demand precision.
[16:24] If without precision.
[16:24] Demand precision.
[16:24] If you hear words like disrespect or abuse
[16:27] or betrayal, they hijack the entire
[16:31] frame, the entire story, the whole
[16:33] narrative, unless they are challenged.
[16:36] You might say something like that word
[16:37] or or or those words carry a whole lot
[16:40] of weight.
[16:40] And if I accept them, I'm not
[16:42] speaking for myself.
[16:42] if I'm playing by a
[16:44] script that I didn't write.
[16:44] Or you might
[16:46] say, when you said the word blank, how
[16:48] do you define that?
[16:48] Clarity, demanding
[16:51] that clarity.
[16:51] So any of these attacks,
[16:54] you always go back on to them.
[16:54] You never
[16:56] defend yourself.
[16:56] You never make any
[16:58] response about yourself personally.
[17:02] Number seven is never answer the binary
[17:04] traps.
[17:04] And these are pretty common.
[17:06] These are the yes, no, uh either or kind
[17:08] of questions.
[17:08] And they're they're
[17:10] designed to corner you.
[17:10] and they're not
[17:11] real questions at all, but that's a trap
[17:13] disguised as a question.
[17:13] It's structured
[17:16] so that either answer makes me wrong and
[17:18] and I don't step into boxes like that.
[17:21] and I don't step into boxes like that.
[17:23] You're just saying, I don't I don't do that.
[17:25] I don't do those things. Number eight, never ever ever try to win
[17:27] eight, never ever ever try to win through logic alone.
[17:30] Logic dominance does not resolve emotional framing.
[17:33] So, you might say something like, "If I decide to use facts here, I'm missing
[17:38] that this isn't about facts. It's about blank.
[17:43] And I totally see that. You might even say the word control.
[17:44] It's about control or it's about you feeling this.
[17:47] Number nine, never argue their feelings are wrong.
[17:49] So, you're going to end up defending your impact instead of holding
[17:55] what your ground is. And here's the a golden phrase I want you to burn into
[17:57] your mind. That line pushes me to take responsibility for how you feel instead
[17:59] of what I did. And I don't want that role in this situation.
[18:03] Number 10, never try to fix the person midconlict.
[18:05] This is what we all think we're going to do, right?
[18:07] We all secretly think, "I'm going to totally whip this [&nbsp;__&nbsp;] into shape in the middle of this conflict.
[18:10] I'm going to fix them." Teaching, coaching,
[18:22] to fix them.
[18:24] Teaching, coaching, analyzing while they're trying to gain control triggers humiliation and shame.
[18:28] So remember, if you're stepping in to do that, that's not the way to do it.
[18:32] There's no phrase for this one.
[18:34] It's it's a dominance play, and you don't want to do that.
[18:38] So when it comes to framing, most of the problems that people deal with in communications do not start in the conflict.
[18:45] They start before it in the first 30 seconds.
[18:48] They start in that little gray area where nobody has defined who we are to each other, what the conversation's about, what the rules are, and what we are not going to do.
[19:00] If you don't set that, the other person's going to do that.
[19:01] So tactical prefring is how we get there first.
[19:03] We're going to hack their identity.
[19:05] You're the kind of person who blank blank blank.
[19:07] Then we're going to define the frame.
[19:08] This is about.
[19:10] So we give them a self-image.
[19:12] So step one would be like you you've always struck me as somebody who can handle straight talk.
[19:17] So I want to be very direct about this.
[19:18] So pre-framing identity.
[19:21] Now we set the frame.
[19:24] identity. Now we set the frame.
[19:26] So we make them the kind of person who will accept the frame and then give them the
[19:28] accept the frame and then give them the frame and then we align with them.
[19:31] The third step here is to preframe the
[19:34] third step here is to preframe the sides.
[19:37] you know, we're on the same side and you just say that like we're on the
[19:39] same team here.
[19:40] Even if we see this from different angles, I think we're on the
[19:42] same team and we have a lot more in common than I think we we we know about.
[19:46] Like here's what it would say at the very beginning of a conversation.

[19:50] You've always struck me as somebody who can handle

[19:52] So, I want to be direct about this.

[20:19] kind of people we are.

[20:30] wanted to say it. And this next we seed the reputation. Basically, you're
[20:32] the reputation. Basically, you're saying, "You're better than all the
[20:33] saying, "You're better than all the games people play." You're going to give
[20:35] games people play." You're going to give them a status. They're going to feel
[20:36] them a status. They're going to feel shame associated with dropping. And
[20:39] shame associated with dropping. And you're going to say, "And you've always
[20:40] you're going to say, "And you've always been fair with me, and that's why I feel
[20:42] been fair with me, and that's why I feel safe being honest here." You know, one
[20:44] safe being honest here." You know, one thing I respect about you is that you
[20:46] thing I respect about you is that you don't play around with half-truths. So,
[20:48] don't play around with half-truths. So, I want to put everything on the table
[20:49] I want to put everything on the table right now. So, this is identity hacking.

[28:28] totally get why you're responding to what's underneath.
