[00:03] When we have really big or really small numbers, we can use something called standard form as an easier way to write them.
[00:14] So here I've got the average distance to the sun, which is 149.6 billion meters, and I'm gonna write that in standard form.
[00:25] Standard form is a number between one and ten, so a number between 1 and 10 times 10 to the power of something.
[00:36] So with 149.6 billion meters, my number between 1 and 10 is going to be 1.496.
[00:49] So I can write 1.496 times 10 to the power of something.
[00:56] And the question is how many times do I multiply 1.496 by 10 to get?
[01:04] 149.6 billion.
[01:07] So if I multiply it by 10 once, I'll get 14.96.
[01:13] Twice, 149.6.
[01:16] Three times for 1496 and so on.
[01:21] So it's one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven times.
[01:31] So instead of saying, instead of writing out the whole number, I can write 1.496 times 10 to the power of 11, and that is in standard form.

[01:47] So I'm gonna have a number between one and ten, which is going to be 2.818.

[02:32] So a negative power in effect makes it a division.
