[01:30] Lord, we want to steal our hearts and center ourselves upon your word. Lead us, guide us. You have full reign in our lives. In Jesus name we all pray and everyone say amen.

[01:50] Have you ever felt totally overwhelmed?
[01:53] You pray to God and then God seem silent and then you begin to ask God. You say, "God, why is this happening to me? What
[02:02] God, why is this happening to me?
[02:02] What did I do to deserve this?
[02:02] God, what are you trying to say to me?
[02:10] If you have lived long enough, I am sure you know what I'm talking about.
[02:15] You will have likely faced such situations.
[02:17] For the past two weeks, we have been journeying through the book of Psalm.
[02:22] In part one, we learned about how to have wisdom.
[02:25] Psalm 1.
[02:27] Last week, we learned from Psalm number eight.
[02:29] We learned about how to deal with it with God when we feel small.
[02:34] You see, basically, Psalm is a hym book for God's people.
[02:36] It is a collection of songs of poems and prayers that lends its voice to God's people to express the full gamut of the human experience.
[02:51] And this book of psalm teaches us to be totally honest before God.
[02:58] There is no need for us to act cute nor to act smart before God.
[03:01] We just come to God just as we are.
[03:01] And today we
[03:05] come to God just as we are.
[03:05] And today we have landed in Psalm number 40.
[03:07] We're going to look at the first three verses of Psalm number 40.
[03:12] I'd like to invite all of us, whether you're here in the West Center or watching me live anywhere around Singapore, around the world, I'd like to invite you to read these verses together with me.
[03:20] The Bible says Psalm 40.
[03:22] This is written by King David.
[03:24] He said this.
[03:24] He said, "Everybody, I waited patiently for the Lord.
[03:27] He turned to me and he heard my cry."
[03:30] Verse two, he lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and the mar.
[03:33] He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.
[03:36] Verse three, you read loud.
[03:40] Bible.
[03:43] The Bible says he put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God.
[03:45] Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him.
[03:48] Do I want to talk to you about overcoming?
[03:52] Can I overcome?
[03:55] From these three verses, I want to unplug three principles for us, three learnings
[04:07] three principles for us, three learnings for us.
[04:07] Number one, it's about waiting for us.
[04:10] Number one, it's about waiting to hearing.

[04:15] If you go with me to verse one, let's look at David's writing.
[04:19] He wrote these words.
[04:21] Verse one, he said, "I waited patiently for the Lord."
[04:26] The two words waited patiently actually comes from the same root word.
[04:30] This is basically a repetition.
[04:33] And this repetition highlights the intensity of the action.
[04:36] Basically, David is saying this, this the situation is so bad.
[04:38] It's so bad.
[04:42] I couldn't do anything else.
[04:43] The only thing I could do is to wait.
[04:48] The only thing I could do right now, nothing else I can do.
[04:49] The only thing I can do is just to wait.
[04:53] If you look at different verses uh of of Psalm 40:1, the first part, we'll be able to get a a fuller
[05:08] part, we'll be able to get a a fuller meaning of this word of of what David is saying here.
[05:12] If you look at the New English translation, the Bible says, I rely completely on the Lord.
[05:19] From the common English Bible, it says this, I put all my hope in the Lord.
[05:25] I think the message version, which is a bit more contemporary, it it says it this way.
[05:28] He say, I waited and I waited and I waited some more for God.
[05:38] Even though the Bible didn't exactly tell us what what is the situation here, but we do know that it is very likely related to King Saul.
[05:45] You see, King Saul was jealous of David's success and the only thing he had in his mind was to eliminate him.
[05:53] He was relentlessly hunting David down to get rid of him.
[05:59] So here David, he was totally overwhelmed.
[06:01] Imagine with me the powers OF THAT DAY, THE king of Israel, he wanted to get rid of me.
[06:06] I could do none other.
[06:09] none other.
[06:09] There's nothing else I can do.
[06:11] I I I I I tried to search Google for answer but there was no answer.
[06:13] I I talked to Chad GBT.
[06:13] I talked to all my friends.
[06:15] No one is able to help me.
[06:18] The only thing I could do was to wait and wait and wait and wait.
[06:25] God, David, where I prayed, unless you show up, I am toast.
[06:29] God, unless you help me, I am dead in the water.
[06:37] Now in my life I can remember moments as such where I I felt so lost.
[06:40] I don't know what else to do.
[06:43] I remember th those days if I if I if I find out what those days were what what were the dates of those days I just I just have to go back to my journal because after I do my quiet time I will pan out.
[06:55] In those days I was so desperate.
[06:58] I ran out of words.
[07:00] I could only pen down two words in my journal.

[07:49] Uh they're having a a tough time and the leader was so kind.
[07:51] The leader sent a text to the husband.
[07:53] And the leader is a guy send a text to the husband and and the text goes something like this.

[07:58] The text says that I heard that you're going through a tough situation.
[08:01] Let me know how I can help.
[08:03] So the text was sent to the husband's handphone.
[08:05] But before the husband could look at the handphone, the wife looked

[08:10] look at the handphone, the wife looked at the handphone first.
[08:12] And the wife at the handphone first.
[08:14] And the wife took the husband handphone and texted back to the leader.
[08:16] What do you mean he's going through a tough situation?
[08:18] I am the one that's going through a tough situation, not him.
[08:23] painful.
[08:27] The leader ah n painful.
[08:30] It's kind of a very painful situation.
[08:32] Perhaps some of us you have just received a bad medical report for yourself or your loved ones.
[08:36] Barring a miracle, things are going down south and going down south rather quickly.
[08:42] Perhaps some of you parents here, you're having a situation with a difficult child.
[08:50] You know, it's kind of interesting.
[08:52] You know, there's somebody in our church who is a cancer survivor.
[08:57] Uh she once met Pastor Claudia and she said this.
[08:59] I I'll never forget those words.
[09:02] She said that going through cancer is less painful than having to deal with a difficult child.
[09:07] So it was that bad.
[09:09] That that that was a situation.
[09:11] situation.
[09:11] Perhaps some of you are facing that situation.
[09:12] Perhaps some of facing that situation.
[09:14] Perhaps some of us have been scammed of a substantial sum of money.
[09:17] There's a guy in our church.
[09:19] He he has been scammed of a substantial sum of money some months ago.
[09:23] and he shared with us he he was feeling both uh not both he was feeling angry.
[09:27] and ashamed and stupid all at the same time and it was quite some time ago but.
[09:30] he didn't tell anyone and then finally he couldn't take it his wife told the leader.
[09:32] and the leader asked him why didn't you tell us and that was his answer.
[09:34] he said that I don't know how to tell you I felt so ashamed I felt so stupid because I I I f the oldest trick in the book.
[09:38] How did that happen to me?
[09:40] Now, if that is you, if you're going through a tough situation right now, I want to encourage you to do what David did.

[09:48] He waited and he waited patiently for the Lord.
[09:52] He prayed and he cried out to God.

[10:16] Because as we do is that important?
[10:20] Because as we do that, God will hear our prayer.

[10:25] Because as we do that, God will turn our waiting to hearing.

[10:33] Let's look at verse one.
[10:33] Psalm 40:1.
[10:36] David wrote, "I waited patiently."
[10:38] Double emphasis.
[10:38] "I really waited."
[10:42] Basically, that's what David said.
[10:45] He he waited for the Lord until a point
[10:48] the Bible says God turned to me and heard my cry.
[10:53] You see, God longs to hear the cry of his people.
[10:58] God longs to speak to us more than we desire to hear from him.
[11:01] If you are in that situation, people, please look at me.
[11:04] I want to urge you.
[11:06] I really want to urge you.
[11:09] The the the stupid thing about human being, right?
[11:12] Not just you, me especially.
[11:14] Sometimes we do everything, right?
[11:16] Sometimes we do everything, right?
[11:18] We may not use those words, but the heart posture is that we we do everything.
[11:20] We're in trouble. We we look for help.
[11:22] We we Google, we talk to people, we find experts.
[11:25] Not that these things are wrong.
[11:26] We talk to friends. We talk to everybody else.
[11:29] And then we come to a place we may not say those words, but our heart posture basically is like that.
[11:32] I've tried everything. Now, what do I do?
[11:34] Pray. law.
[11:37] It's as if like praying is a kind of a last resort. But if you learn from King David's life, prayer is the first thing that he did.
[11:43] He said, "I prayed. I waited patiently for the Lord until a point where God turned to me and God heard my cry."
[11:51] 1 Peter 3:12, the Bible says, "For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous."
[11:58] Now, who are the righteous?
[12:00] The righteous are those who have put their faith in Jesus Christ.
[12:05] come you here are righteous in Christ.
[12:06] You have already come to a place where you receive Jesus into your life as your Lord and Savior.
[12:09] Come on, lift up your hands. Come on, lift up your hands.
[12:10] Give me a wave. Give me a wave. Give me a wave.
[12:13] The Bible says this about us.
[12:16] For the eyes of the Lord are on you and his ears are
[12:18] Lord are on you and his ears are attentive to your prayer.
[12:21] God longs to hear your prayer.
[12:21] Matthew 7:7, the Bible says, "Ask and it will be given to you.
[12:26] Seek and you will find.
[12:29] Knock and the door will be open to you."
[12:31] So the Bible is telling us we need to seek God.
[12:34] So the first thing we can learn from this passage.
[12:36] How do we overcome?
[12:38] How do we overcome?
[12:40] We overcome not because we are strong.
[12:40] We overcome not because we are able.
[12:42] We overcome not because we have got it all figured out.
[12:44] We have we overcome not because we are educated.
[12:46] We are experienced.
[12:47] We are a trainer.
[12:49] We are CEO or whatever.
[12:52] We are able to overcome all situations in life because we have learn to wait upon the Lord.
[12:55] Because as we wait, God will turn our waiting to hearing.
[12:57] That's the first thing we learn.
[13:00] Secondly, we will overcome when God turn our despair to deliverance.
[13:02] God turned our despair to deliverance.
[13:04] Now, let's look at Psalm 40 verse one and verse two.
[13:08] I'm going to read verse one while you read verse two.
[13:18] Read verse one while you read verse two.
[13:18] David prayed.
[13:21] He was running away from Saul.
[13:23] He was in a bad situation.
[13:23] He said, "I waited patiently for the Lord.
[13:26] He turned to me and he heard my cry.
[13:29] Verse two, you read what happened.
[13:31] Then he lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and the he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.
[13:39] In verse two, slimy pit could be literally translated to the system of destruction.
[13:49] System of destruction.
[13:51] Slimy pit together with mud and my it refers to a place of death.
[14:00] It refers to a place where God seem distant.
[14:04] So David used this rather uh uh uh uh strong figure this descriptive words to to to describe the severity of his crisis.
[14:14] He said I'm in a slimy pit.
[14:16] Man is it's it's a wet mud.
[14:16] It was a mirror
[14:19] It's a wet mud.
[14:19] It was a mirror situation.
[14:21] Well, this was the situation.
[14:21] Well, this was the situation that he was in.
[14:23] But let's look at the second part of verse two.
[14:25] The Bible says he was in a slimy pit.
[14:28] He was in the mud.
[14:28] He was in the myro.
[14:30] But what happened?
[14:30] The Bible says that God lifted him out and set his feet on a rock and gave him a firm place to stand.
[14:37] You see, our God does not just see us in the pit.
[14:45] He pull us out of the pit.
[14:45] He brings us out from the m the slimy pit and place us on a solid rock.
[14:59] He sees us and he pull us out of the wet mud and put us in a firm place.
[15:08] That is the God that we worship.
[15:08] And as a result of waiting on him, not only does he hear us, he hears our cry, he sees us in the pit, he will pull us out from the slimy pit, put us
[15:21] pull us out from the slimy pit, put us in a solid rock, and he will pull us out.
[15:24] in a solid rock, and he will pull us out from the wet mud and put us in a firm place.
[15:27] My friend, this whole deal in our church, especially in the in the year 2017, we we describe this as an only God moment.
[15:31] 2017 the focus for that year was only God way ocean that's how we say it.
[15:33] and and and and the catchphrase for that year is basically this only God we are completely dependent and totally reliant on God and God alone.
[15:37] we we we we pray to God we we ask God for help and God sees us and God pull us out slamming pit solid rock, wet, mud, firm place.
[15:40] When that happens, we just amaze, man, this is this is only God.
[15:44] When we see God helps our pre-believing families who
[16:22] helps our pre-believing families who have only objected our faith since we have only objected our faith since we were young come to a position where they were young come to a position where they named Jesus as their only Lord and named Jesus as their only Lord and Savior.
[16:31] We just lift our hands up and say man only God only God could have done that.
[16:37] When we see God heal chronic disease and God does that.
[16:40] I was just telling somebody in this congregation this morning that there was a guy in our church.
[16:45] His name is Andrew Lee.
[16:47] You you know him because he share his testimony openly.
[16:49] He has white hair.
[16:51] I mean he plays the keyboard.
[16:52] He had pancreatic cancer.
[16:54] The doctor diagnosed that he has only 7% left to live.
[16:57] That was 10 years ago.
[17:00] But he prayed, he did his best, he overcome.
[17:04] And today he's still alive.
[17:06] And when that happens, he can only pay the keyboard.
[17:08] No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
[17:10] Only God.
[17:12] Only God could have done that.
[17:15] When we see God pull us out of a hole that we have dug for ourselves and we surrender oursel and we worship God, we say only God.

[17:42] So way only God when God opened doors for us to plant churches in India in Mongolia in Japan when God enable us to plant centers all over Singapore what do we do.

[18:07] Recently, one of the only God thing that God uh did in Pastor Claudia's life and my life was a few weeks ago.
[18:16] It was my mother-in-law's birthday.
[18:19] So, Pastor Claudia asked her mom if she would like to throw a party so that we are able to invite pre-believing people to go to the party.
[18:27] And some of these pre-believing friends are actually our colleagues.
[18:31] friends are actually our our colleagues parents.
[18:34] So, the mom agreed.
[18:34] So, on that day 21 people show up.

[22:43] hear the prayer of his people and God make a way. pull them out of whatever
[22:46] make a way. pull them out of whatever situation they were in and put them on a
[22:51] situation they were in and put them on a solid rock on a firm place. Now, let's
[22:54] solid rock on a firm place. Now, let's go back to Psalm 40. So, here David has
[22:58] go back to Psalm 40. So, here David has his only God moment when God pull him
[23:02] his only God moment when God pull him out of his sliming pit. You see, God
[23:04] out of his sliming pit. You see, God longs to turn your despair to
[23:08] longs to turn your despair to deliverance. Turn to your neighbor on
[23:10] deliverance. Turn to your neighbor on your left and on your right. Tell them
