# SAP Finance Shifted. Most Consultants Haven't Noticed Yet

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3p77LeOOfaM

[00:00] So, I had a conversation last week that should terrify every SAP FICO or FI CO consultant watching this.
[00:08] A CFO at a major Fortune 500 company asked me to help him build an internal finance team for a major S/4HANA migration.
[00:16] So, it was an enterprise-wide digital transformation across 12 countries, very complex intercompany structure, multi-million-dollar ERP implementation.
[00:25] And he wanted to build a tag team who would guide the implementation.
[00:29] I casually asked him, I said, "How many FICO consultants you wanted?"
[00:33] He said, "None."
[00:35] Not zero budget, zero interest.
[00:38] And he didn't want the FICO consultants.
[00:40] So, I knew exactly what he meant.
[00:42] You know, I probed further.
[00:44] I asked him, "What do you need?"
[00:46] And so, he said he wanted a central finance architect, a group reporting specialist, a SAC planning expert, a tax automation consultant who understood tax implications, and a treasury specialist who could set up multi-bank connectivity across 12.
[01:00] Countries.
[01:01] Five roles, and not one of them had FICO in the title.
[01:05] I'm Noel Benjamin De Costa.
[01:08] I've been implementing ERP software for the last 25 years across SAP, across Oracle and Microsoft.
[01:13] More than 100 organizations, government, defense, banking, Fortune 500 manufacturing, over $700 million in project value.
[01:22] And I have worked with every major system integrator, whether it be Deloitte, Accenture, EY, the Big Four, either as a client or as a consultant.
[01:31] And this is the first time in my career I'm actually seeing CIOs and CFOs actually avoid the word FICO consultants in their hiring specs.
[01:41] Now, that's not a trend.
[01:43] That's a structural shift in enterprise resource planning.
[01:45] So, whether you're a CIO, you know, planning your next digital transformation investment, or a consultant planning the next 5 years, you need to understand what's replacing generic FICO.
[01:57] Because the ROI conversation around SAP finance has fundamentally changed.
[01:59] So,
[02:02] Five niche areas, what is SAP doing with each one?
[02:05] What are the real hurdles?
[02:07] And why are consultants who combine two or more skills the ones commanding around $200 to $300 an hour?
[02:15] So, five areas and I'll tell you right now.
[02:17] So, area number four is the most recession-proof SAP skill on the planet.
[02:23] So, stay for that one 'cause you won't regret it.
[02:27] So, area number one is central finance, right?
[02:29] There may be around 500 consultants globally who can implement this properly.
[02:33] And the ones who can, they don't apply for jobs, jobs apply for them.
[02:38] Now, this is probably the most underrated capability in the entire SAP portfolio right now.
[02:43] So, here's the problem it solves, right?
[02:46] So, most large enterprises don't run one enterprise resource planning system, they run five, they run 10, you know, sometimes 20.
[02:54] And all because all of it is in different countries, in different business units, different ERP implementations.
[03:01] So, some of them could be on SAP ECC, some of them are on...
[03:03] Oracle, some of them are on legacy platforms that people don't want to touch.
[03:09] Now, in the US, you see this constantly with Fortune 500 companies that grew through acquisitions.
[03:14] So, a manufacturing company in Ohio buys a distributor, let's say in Texas running Oracle.
[03:22] Or a supplier in Michigan who's running JD Edwards and their own plants are running SAP ECC.
[03:29] So, the CFO's team spends weeks every quarter trying to pull consolidated numbers across all of these enterprise softwares, right?
[03:36] So, you're talking about spreadsheets, VLOOKUPs, you know, manual adjustments.
[03:42] Every big four consulting firm has seen this exact scenario.
[03:46] In India, it's the same story but with the IT services company managing it from the outside.
[03:51] So, you'll have TCS, Infosys, Wipro.
[03:54] They're all being asked to solve this problem for their global clients.
[03:58] And the consultants who actually understand central finance, you could probably count them on two hands.
[04:04] And central finance really changes the game, right?
[04:05] You deploy one S/4HANA system as your central finance hub.
[04:10] It pulls all the financial postings from all the source systems in real time.
[04:15] Whether it be an ECC, Oracle, you know, whatever.
[04:19] The data lands in the universal journal.
[04:22] So, just one version of the truth, you don't have spreadsheet reconciliation anymore.
[04:26] So, if I go to what's new in central finance, SAP just released the enhanced central finance capability in the February 2026 update.
[04:37] What it did was it improved the GL posting visibility big time.
[04:41] You have a better integration with Taulia for the working capital optimization, and then the management accounting interface now supports online replication for cost postings.
[04:52] Now, what does that mean?
[04:54] That means your cost allocations in the source system flows to central finance in real time instead of batch.
[05:00] So, in the old way, BPC was always used for consolidation, right?
[05:03] You had
[05:06] Separate systems, you had separate data models, reconciliation nightmares, plenty of data extracts, manual adjustments, waiting for period end close before you could even start.
[05:18] In the new world, all of that changes, right?
[05:22] So, what are the hurdles that you would have?
[05:25] So, this is not a plug-and-play system.
[05:26] You need harmonized master data across all the source systems, right?
[05:31] The chart of accounts needs to be mapped, the profit centers need to be aligned.
[05:35] So, if your source system has a really inconsistent GL structures, you're looking at a serious data harmonization efforts even before you start with the technical setup.
[05:46] Now, here's the multi-skill angle.
[05:49] So, the consultants killing it in central finance right now, they're not really pure FI CO people.
[05:53] They're the ones who understand data migration.
[05:58] They understand integration architecture on BTP.
[06:02] They understand consolidation accounting.
[06:04] So, central finance plus group reporting.
[06:06] Is a combined skill.
[06:09] That's a very rare profile and it commands premium rates.
[06:12] Now, stay with me here because the next one pairs with central finance to create a skill combination that barely exists in the market.
[06:21] And the people who really have it are printing money.
[06:24] I'm talking about the second area, which is group reporting, which is a difference, you know, skill set entirely.
[06:29] Group reporting is SAP's replacement for BPC consolidation.
[06:32] So, it runs natively within S/4HANA.
[06:35] So, there's no separate system, there's no separate database.
[06:39] Your consolidation process uses the same universal journal that your operational finance uses.
[06:46] So, in the old world, you closed your books in ECC, you extracted the data to BPC, and then you ran your consolidation.
[06:53] And then if something didn't tie, you went back to the source system, you fixed it, you re-extracted it, and reconsolidated.
[07:01] Now, that loop could take days and sometimes it could take even weeks depending on the complex group.
[07:07] Structures.
[07:09] Now, with group reporting, the data is already there, right?
[07:11] So, there's real-time.
[07:13] You close your entities, you run your intercompany elimination, you do your currency translation, your minority interest calculation, all on the same data set.
[07:22] So, there's no extracts, there's no reconciliation gaps.
[07:26] And the February 2026 release added a universal parallel accounting support, which is pretty much a big deal for multinational companies reporting under, say, US GAAP and IFRS simultaneously.
[07:39] Or it could be even for Indian subsidiaries of US parents that needed to maintain books both on the Indian AS and the parents gap.
[07:49] So, there are two accounting standards, one system, and duplicate postings.
[07:53] It could also be used even for IPSAS and IFRS for public sector.
[07:57] So, what are the hurdles?
[07:59] Now, this requires deep knowledge of consolidation accounting, intercompany matching, requires the equity method, proportional consolidation, you know, purchase price
[08:07] Allocation.
[08:09] Now, this isn't really SAP configuration work.
[08:12] This is accounting work.
[08:14] So, you need people who understand IFRS or US GAAP consolidation rules and can translate them into a system design.
[08:20] Now, most FICO consultants don't have that.
[08:22] Most CPAs don't know SAP, and so the people in the middle are rare, and they're charging accordingly.
[08:30] So, if you're a consultant in India looking at this, here's your opportunity.
[08:34] US companies need people who can do group reporting work at competitive rates.
[08:39] So, if you can pair your FICO configuration skills with consolidation accounting knowledge, you can serve that market from Bangalore or Hyderabad and still bill at rates that would make most Indian SAP consultants uncomfortable.
[08:53] So, let's talk about area number three, which is SAP Analytics Cloud.
[08:57] So, if you're still using BPC for planning, I need you to really listen to this next one because SAP has made its direction very clear, and a lot of companies are about to get caught.
[09:08] Flat-footed.
[09:09] SAC is where SAP's finance reporting and planning is headed, right?
[09:12] Full stop.
[09:15] In ECC, you had BW for reporting, BPC for budgeting, and Excel extracts everywhere.
[09:21] The CFO asks for a variance analysis, and somebody spends 2 days building it.
[09:26] The SAC embedded in S/4HANA changes this completely.
[09:30] So, you have real-time dashboards pulling data directly from the universal journal.
[09:34] You have predictive forecasting, what-if scenario planning, and with Jewel integration, users can ask financial questions in natural language, and you know, they can get their answers on the spot.
[09:44] Now, the feature that most people miss is SAC planning.
[09:48] It's not just dashboards, it's a full planning and budgeting platform.
[09:52] So, you could do your annual budgets, your rolling forecast, your driver-based planning, all connected to your actuals and S/4HANA in real time.
[10:00] So, there's no more, you know, uploading actuals into BPC at the month end, they're just there.
[10:06] Now, in the old way, BPC was powerful.
[10:08] but painful.
[10:11] Different versions, you had C pack, you know, embedded, classic.
[10:14] You had every customer had a different flavor.
[10:19] Migrations between versions were a project in themselves.
[10:21] And the interface frustrated everyone except the power users, you know, who spent years mastering it.
[10:27] So, let's talk about the hurdles.
[10:29] SAC is cloud only, so if your organization has data residency requirements, there's a conversation you need to have on day one.
[10:37] So, for US companies in regulated industries like healthcare, financial services, defense, cloud data sovereignty is a board-level discussion.
[10:47] Your existing BPC planning logic just doesn't migrate over, right?
[10:50] It needs to be redesigned.
[10:52] The skill set is different.
[10:54] SAC consultants need to understand data modeling, story building, planning sequences, and integration, let's say, with S/4HANA.
[11:01] Now, this isn't a FICO skill, it's a new discipline.
[11:05] Now, if you look at the multi-skill play here, SAC plus FICO, if you understand
[11:10] Financial reporting requirements and you can build SAC stories and planning models, you're bridging a gap that most organizations can't fill internally.
[11:20] Their finance team know what they want, their IT team knows the tool, but nobody speaks both the languages, and that's you.
[11:28] So, this is what it changes in the real world.
[11:30] So, remember at the beginning I said area number four is the one nobody sees coming?
[11:34] Well, here it is.
[11:37] It's all about tax automation and e-invoicing.
[11:39] Now, this one flies completely under the radar and it shouldn't because it's not optional, it's mandatory.
[11:45] And it's the most recession-proof SAP skill on the planet.
[11:48] So, governments don't stop collecting taxes during a downturn.
[11:52] And every country is moving towards mandatory electronic invoicing.
[11:57] So, Saudi Arabia has ZATCA phase two.
[12:01] The UAE has just implemented corporate tax.
[12:06] India has got GST e-invoicing through the NIC portal.
[12:09] Then you have Brazil, you have Mexico, Italy, Poland.
[12:12] Uh all of them have got e-invoicing requirements.
[12:14] You have the EU who's rolling out VITA and VAT in the digital age, which will require real-time digital reporting across all the member states.
[12:23] In the US, it's a slightly different flavor, but the same direction, right?
[12:27] So, the IRS is modernizing.
[12:30] You know, the states are tightening sales tax compliance and SOX audit requirements are getting more granular around automated controls and governance.
[12:39] So, what does that mean for SAP?
[12:41] So, every single S/4HANA system needs a tax engine integration, right?
[12:48] It requires compliance reporting, digital signature capabilities, real-time invoice validation with government portals.
[12:55] So, what's SAP's approach?
[12:58] So, SAP's document and reporting compliance handles the e-invoicing.
[13:03] Uh it handles the e-delivery, the digital tax reporting for multiple countries, and it sits on BTP, and it integrates with S/4HANA.
[13:11] So, SAP also partners with third-party
[13:13] Tax engines like Vertex and Sovos for complex tax calculation.
[13:18] Now, in the old world in ECC, tax was always on the back burner.
[13:24] Right?
[13:26] You configured your tax codes, you ran your periodic reports, and then you filed returns manually or through some bolt-on tool.
[13:32] Now, compliance was basically a quarterly headache and a nightmare for companies, and they didn't really know what to do.
[13:39] So, what are the hurdles?
[13:41] So, the tax automation requires a unique combination of skills.
[13:45] You need somebody who understands local tax laws, you know, the technical integration with government platforms and the SAP configuration to make it work.
[13:53] So, in Saudi Arabia, the ZATCA phase two with a API-based invoice clearance is a massive project for every company operating over there.
[14:04] In India, integrating GST e-invoicing with SAP's required middleware, you know, the API connections to the NIC portal and changes to the billing process that most companies weren't ready for.
[14:14] Now, if you look at the multi-skill angle, the tax plus FI-CO plus integration, if you understand tax law even in one major market and can configure the SAP tax engine, you know, and can handle the entire BTP integration layer, you become irreplaceable for any global rollout.
[14:35] And I know consultants with this combination were booked solid for, you know, 3 years straight with zero bench time.
[14:42] So, the last one, area number five, and this is pretty much the loneliest niche in SAP.
[14:47] And I know treasury consultants who've never had a single day on bench in 5 years, not one day.
[14:56] And that tells you something about the supply and the demand situation.
[14:59] So, treasury has always been a niche within the SAP finance.
[15:04] And S/4HANA turned it into something far more powerful.
[15:07] So, the old SAP treasury in ECC was functional, but it was kind of limited in what it could do.
[15:10] So, cash management
[15:15] Was really basic, and the bank communication required middleware like the Swift Alliance Lite.
[15:21] Now, liquidity forecasting was mostly manual and most US companies ran separate treasury management systems like Cariba or the FIS, you know, alongside with SAP.
[15:35] Now, the total cost of ownership was high because you were running, you know, two different platforms and managed services contracts for treasury were pretty expensive and disconnected from the core ERP.
[15:46] In SAP S/4HANA, SAP rebuilt the treasury from the ground up.
[15:50] So, you have the new cash management that uses the universal journal for real-time cash positioning.
[15:56] You have the bank account management that gives you a centralized view across your entire organization.
[16:02] You have advanced payment management which handles really complex payment factory scenarios.
[16:08] And the latest update introduced agentic automation for treasury operations.
[16:13] So, you have AI handling the routine payment
[16:16] Processing and exception management, right?
[16:18] Now, the game-changer.
[16:21] So, SAP multi-bank connectivity, MBC connects your S/4HANA system directly to your banks.
[16:28] So, there's no need for a middleware.
[16:31] There's no more Swift installations.
[16:34] It's direct, it's secure, it's a cloud-based bank communication.
[16:36] So, the payment files go out, the bank statements come in, and it's all automated, right?
[16:43] For US companies dealing with ACH, Fedwire, and Swift payments uh across multiple banking partners, this simplifies the landscape dramatically.
[16:53] Now, let's talk about the hurdles, right?
[16:57] Treasury is deeply specialized.
[17:00] It talks about financial instruments, hedge accounting under ASC 815 and IFRS 9.
[17:04] You talk about cash pooling, in-house banking, payment factories, cross-border payments with OFAC screening.
[17:10] Most FI CO consultants have never touched this.
[17:15] And the treasury teams are really small, you know, three to five
[17:16] people.
[17:18] So, convincing them to change their processes is like running a project for years in itself.
[17:23] But, here's the opportunity.
[17:25] So, you have treasury plus FI CO plus bank integration.
[17:29] That triple combination barely exists in the market.
[17:34] So, if you have it, you don't compete for roles, roles compete for you.
[17:38] So, let me pull all of this together for you.
[17:40] So, five niche areas, all growing very fast, all critical, but, you know, short on talent.
[17:46] Now, if you notice a pattern, every area I mentioned rewards consultants who have more than one skill.
[17:53] So, it could be central finance plus group reporting.
[17:55] It could be SAC plus FI CO or it could be tax plus integration or treasury plus bank connectivity.
[18:04] So, the single skill FI CO consultant is becoming a commodity.
[18:09] The multi-skill specialist is becoming a premium.
[18:11] So, if you're a customer, whether you're a CIO or a CFO, the message is really clear.
[18:16] SAP finance isn't about GL and cost centers anymore.
[18:20] The enterprise platform has expanded into consolidation, planning, tax automation, and treasury in ways that fundamentally change how your finance team operates.
[18:31] But, getting there from ECC requires a real S/4HANA migration strategy.
[18:36] It requires clean data.
[18:39] It requires the right implementation partner and people with the right combination of skills.
[18:45] So, if you're a consultant, especially if you're in India or if you're in Europe or in the US, these five areas are where the next decade of SAP finance careers will be built.
[18:56] So, stop competing in the crowded FI CO pool.
[18:59] You know, go where the demand is high and the supply is low.
[19:03] So, in the next video, I'm doing the same breakdown, but for the SAP supply chain.
[19:08] So, what's changed?
[19:09] What's new?
[19:09] How to get there?
[19:10] And, you know, what are the hurdles?
[19:11] Subscribe so that you don't miss it.
[19:14] And drop a comment which of these five areas interest you the most and tell me your current skill set.
[19:19] And I'll tell you which combination makes the most sense.
[19:21] For you, for your profile basically.
[19:24] And I read every comment as you would have seen in all my other videos.
[19:28] So, I'm Noel Benjamin De Costa.
[19:30] Thank you for watching and I'll see you in the next one.
