If you have a safe lock in front of you that consists of three numbers, you could sit and try from 0 to 999 until you open it.

The matter will take you some time, but in the end, you will succeed.

But what would you say if I told you that there is a cosmic lock where every time you add just one digit, the number of possibilities doesn't multiply by two or ten?

It explodes exponentially to the point that if you tried to calculate the possibilities for just 300 numbers, you would find that the number of these possibilities is greater than the number of atoms in the entire observable universe.

This cosmic lock is the electrons inside any material in quantum mechanics.

For a very long time, simulating the movement of these electrons and predicting their behavior was considered a nightmare and an impossible task for the largest computer humans have ever built.

But today, through new research published by Quanta Magazine, geniuses in mathematics and physics have found a secret code, magical algorithms that can tame this quantum madness and condense it in seconds.

We are not just looking at an equation on paper; we are looking at...

The key that will open the door to a new era of technology, from free electricity to medicines designed at the atomic level.

  Welcome.

I am Emad Essam, and this is a new topic from 'Science by the Spoonful'.

If you haven't subscribed to the channel yet, you are missing out on a lot of the secrets of the universe that we break down here piece by piece.

And prepare your perfect cup of coffee, because we are entering a battle between the human mind and the infinite complexity of quantum mechanics.

So focus very closely with me in today's episode because we are going to crack the impossible code.

Let me ask you a question before we start our episode.

What is the common thing between an electron that penetrates a solid wall without breaking it, a universe made of 11 dimensions stacked on top of each other, and a schizophrenic patient whose brain chemistry produces a reality that no one else sees but him?

The common thing is that our senses deceive us.

We are used to believing only what our eyes see.

But science has proven that the reality behind the curtain is completely different.

And it is millions of times more complex than what we imagine.

If you want to break the barrier of ordinary vision and truly understand the code of existence, I am waiting for you on the Science by the Spoonful VIP platform.

And every month a new series is added to your library on the site.

These are not just videos; this is an investment in your way of thinking and your vision of the world.

  So invest in your minds.

I will leave you the link under the video in the description and in the first comment.

In order to understand the greatness that happened in these new algorithms, we must first put our hands on the disaster that was facing scientists.

As humans, in order to invent any new material like a mobile battery that lasts a month or a light and strong airplane alloy, we must understand how the electrons inside this material interact with each other.

So all of chemistry, physics, and biology is summarized in the dance of electrons.

But these electrons do not move like billiard balls in straight lines.

Electrons are subject to the laws of quantum mechanics.

Meaning a single electron exists in a state of superposition.

Meaning it exists in all possible states at the same moment until you measure it.

So if you want to simulate a single electron on a computer to predict its movement, the matter is easy.

And if it's two electrons, the computer will calculate these probabilities and give you the result.

But the disaster begins when you increase the number.

For in quantum mechanics, particles become entangled with each other.

Every time you add an electron, the probability space here does not add up; it multiplies exponentially.

Physicists call the space where these probabilities live 'Hilbert space'.

So to calculate the state of matter containing just 300 electrons—which is a trivial number in the world of chemistry—

if we took all the supercomputers in the world since they were invented until today and made them calculate these probabilities, the universe would end.

And he dies, and these computers still haven't finished even 1% of the calculation.

This number is larger than the number of atoms in the entire universe.

This terrifying phenomenon is called the 'curse of dimensionality'.

Nature has made decoding it through brute-force computation an impossible task.

So, the scientists had no choice but one of two solutions.

Either we give up and wait until we invent a powerful quantum computer that can simulate nature in its own language, and that is still many long years away.

Or we find a shortcut, a loophole in mathematics that allows us to calculate what is important and discard the rest.

And here appeared the algorithms, the magical algorithms that turned the tables on the curse of dimensionality.

So, how do these algorithms work, and how were they able to compress infinity into simple lines of code?

Focus with me on what's coming, because this is the core of the breakthrough.

In their recent research published in Quanta Magazine, scientists used a completely out-of-the-box way of thinking.

They asked themselves a brilliant question.

Does nature really use all of these crazy Hilbert spaces?

To simplify the idea for you, imagine you have a huge library with a million books, and each book has a million pages.

You want to search for a specific sentence related to a physics text.

In the classical way, which is a normal computer, you would take a book and read it page by page from cover to cover, and that is suicide.

But the new algorithms discovered something amazing.

Nature doesn't read all the books at all.

Most of the very complex possibilities inside these Hilbert spaces, the states that have random and crazy quantum entanglement, are just mathematical possibilities, but they do not appear in the real physics of stable materials at normal temperatures.

Nature is lazy and likes stability.

So atoms and electrons are always looking for the lowest possible energy state to settle in.

These stable states take up a very, very small corner of this library.

Scientists have invented a powerful mathematical tool called Tensor Networks.

  What does this tool do?

It works like file decompression programs, like zip files.

This algorithm enters the complex quantum system and discards all the possibilities whose occurrence in nature is almost impossible.

It focuses only on the patterns where electrons actually entangle.

The algorithm cuts this complex network into small, easy-to-digest pieces and simulates them.

Then it stitches them back together in an innovative mathematical way.

So instead of the computer calculating all the possibilities, the algorithms compress them and turn them into very simple equations that your laptop can calculate in minutes or hours.

This is not just a reductive simplification; it is a smart simplification.

We discard the noise and keep the essential information.

And this is what made the simulation of very complex chemical materials, which was considered impossible two or three years ago, something that is done today in laboratories with very ordinary classical computing tools, thanks to these magical algorithms.

Okay, so we have gotten an idea about the mathematical side.

But as humans, what will we actually benefit from the computer being able to simulate the movement of 300 electrons?

Is this just an academic victory for scientists to win awards for?

  The answer is no.

This algorithm is the magic lamp that will get us out of crushing crises facing the planet, the first of which is the energy crisis.

  So, how?

Focus with me because we are entering the era of free electricity.

The biggest problem facing humanity today is energy.

We generate electricity in power plants and transmit it through wires and towers over long distances to reach homes and factories.

But there is a very harsh tax we pay along the way called electrical resistance.

The wires heat up, and a very large part of this electricity, reaching 10% or 15% of the world's production, is lost as useless heat.

So for a long time, scientists have been dreaming of a superconducting material or superconductors.

A material that allows electricity to flow through it without any resistance and without...

It loses no energy; this material actually exists currently.

But its problem is that it only works at temperatures far below zero, very close to absolute zero.

And this makes using it in streets and homes an impossible and expensive matter.

So the ultimate goal for material physics scientists is to invent a superconducting material at room temperature.

And if we do this, we will save trillions of dollars and create trains that fly over tracks using magnets, which is Maglev, and batteries that never run out.

But in order to invent this material, we needed to understand how electrons entangle and form Cooper pairs.

And this is so they can move without hitting the material's atoms and creating heat.

And here we would stand before the curse of dimensionality, a dead end in front of us.

And we had to rely on trial and error in the labs.

We bring materials, mix them, cool them, and see if they will work or not.

But today, and thanks to the impossible algorithms and tensor networks I am telling you about today, scientists have become capable.

They perform a very precise simulation of the movement of electrons inside the complex crystal lattices of these materials on a computer screen.

We no longer need to experiment randomly in the lab.

The algorithm tests millions of chemical combinations in seconds and tells scientists if you put a copper atom here and an oxygen atom there, the electrons will dance the right dance and it will become a superconductor at normal room temperature.

This algorithm is what will guide us to the magic recipe that will save the energy crisis in the world.

These algorithms will not stop at electrical wires.

  They will enter your body.

Manufacturing medicine today is a very slow and very, very expensive process, and the failure rate is terrifying.

So, to come up with a new drug for a disease like cancer or Alzheimer's, pharmaceutical companies take a chemical compound and test it in the lab, then on animals, and then on humans in a journey that can take 10 years and cost billions of dollars.

Disease, at its core, happens when a protein inside your body gets deformed or interacts incorrectly.

The medication is a small molecule that we design to go and fit into this protein like a key in a lock, to fix it or stop it.

So, to design this key, we must know the very precise quantum interactions between the electrons of the medication and the electrons of the protein.

And of course, because these proteins are giant molecules containing thousands of atoms, classical computers would crash and show a blue screen, and they could never simulate this interaction accurately.

So we used to rely on approximations that were full of errors.

But with the magical algorithm of tensor networks, we are now able to simulate the active centers in enzymes and proteins with terrifying quantum precision.

The computer can see the electron as it moves from the medication to the cells in real-time and predict exactly whether this medication will bind to the cells or not, and whether it has chemical side effects or not.

And all of this is done on the server before we bother ourselves or waste time making a pill in reality.

We are entering the era of personalized medicine.

The algorithm will analyze your composition and design a custom medicine for your cells in days instead of years.

Imagine that the algorithms we designed to compensate for the absence of a quantum computer are the ones that will help us build this quantum computer.

So how does this strange paradox happen?

How can an algorithm treat itself?

This hurdle helps you understand the intelligence of the human mind.

The biggest obstacle facing the construction of a powerful quantum computer today is quantum noise.

The qubits that the quantum computer works with are very sensitive.

Any heat or vibration from the outside ruins its quantum entanglement and causes errors in calculations.

And to make a stable quantum computer, we need to innovate error correction codes.

And we need to understand exactly how quantum entanglement breaks down in order to protect it.

And here was the genius twist.

  Scientists used magical classical algorithms.

This is what runs on very ordinary laptops to simulate the behavior of qubits inside the quantum computer itself.

We are using mathematics here to monitor noise, understand its patterns, and design a new architecture for quantum computers that is immune to interference.

So the classical algorithm has become the engineer building the quantum age.

We are using the tools of the present to break down the door that is locked on the technology of the future.

In the end, discoveries like these teach us something very important about our place as humans.

The universe is created with very complex laws.

The curse of dimensionality and the exponential explosion of probabilities used to seem like a dead end.

A message telling us, 'I'm sorry, this area is forbidden to you; you will never be able to understand it.'

But the human mind does not know how to give up.

So when the door is locked with a thousand locks, the scientist does not break the door.

The scientist sits down and invents a master key.

Meaning an algorithm that goes around all these locks and opens the safe without...

Tensor networks and modern quantum mathematics calculate all the impossible calculations, and they are not just numbers.

This is proof that our perception and consciousness are capable of decoding the dark universe, no matter how complicated it is.

We are living in an exceptional period.

A period where science is transforming from the stage of discovery and observation to the stage of engineering and control.

We are no longer studying electrons just to know what they do.

We are studying them to tell them exactly what to do to serve us.

This algorithm is the beginning of a new symphony, the symphony of the mind when it plays with the foundations of physical reality.

If you liked the episode with this new information and understood what a 'shear explosion' means and how scientists overcome it, then you are surely one of those whose minds grasp what others see as impossible or just gibberish.

And let me ask you a question, and I will wait to know your opinions in the comments.

Do you think that when these algorithms develop further and integrate with artificial intelligence, what is the material or magical invention that humanity desires?

You will reach it in the coming years thanks to this technology.

And as usual, I will leave the sources for you under the video in the description.

And I will see you soon, all the best, in a new and useful video, God willing.
