[00:01] hello a.d i'm sienna miller welcome to

[00:04] my cottage

[00:06] [Music]

[00:14] i'm going to start in the kitchen

[00:16] because that's where everybody always

[00:17] ends up

[00:18] in the last year i've redecorated the

[00:20] house with my great friend gabby dalau

[00:23] who is a film director but has the best

[00:26] taste of anyone i've ever met so in

[00:28] lockdown when she was panicking about

[00:29] what to do because her film

[00:31] was pushed i said you can do up my

[00:33] cottage and she did i bought this house

[00:35] when i was 25 in a moment of real panic

[00:38] i was sort of

[00:39] in london and life was very intense and

[00:41] i just was dreaming about having a place

[00:44] to get away to and i saw this place

[00:46] online it's about 45 minutes from london

[00:48] and it was on to rent or buy and i

[00:50] thought i'll rent it for a year and i

[00:51] came to see it and

[00:53] fell completely in love and bought it

[00:55] it's really my sanctuary it's where i

[00:57] come to do nothing 1920s critical doors

[01:01] bring me a lot of joy i mean the new

[01:03] ones just don't look like that so i'm

[01:04] thrilled with them and i think that

[01:06] having such an old house is a magical

[01:08] thing but having contemporary touches in

[01:10] it really work this is probably my

[01:12] favorite thing because it's just the

[01:14] most beautiful la conch stove i have

[01:16] dreamt about having a big stove and i've

[01:18] never ever had one before and i love to

[01:20] cook so if i'm in a city or in the

[01:22] country or anywhere and there is a

[01:24] sunday there will be food being cooked

[01:26] and it's magical to have this much space

[01:28] and christmas dinners before we had a

[01:30] tiny oven and it was

[01:31] hell so that's been wonderful i bought

[01:34] it off this couple that had done it up

[01:36] and they sold me the house with all the

[01:38] furniture and it was lovely it was very

[01:40] traditional english cottage it's now

[01:42] much more sophisticated and evolved and

[01:44] i think much more how my taste actually

[01:46] is i'd sort of inherited somebody else's

[01:49] vision and made it my own but it was

[01:52] never quite right so we've done a

[01:53] complete refurb in here

[01:57] [Music]

[02:01] thatch is funny it's like the biggest

[02:03] tiny house you've ever seen

[02:06] somehow it keeps on going it's like a

[02:08] rabbit warren and

[02:09] and it can it's got

[02:11] five bedrooms so it can sleep i said

[02:13] it's got six bedrooms it can sleep 12

[02:14] people but it's little so i realized

[02:17] that we needed a big space for lots of

[02:18] people and so when we've got a lot of

[02:20] people this is where we would have

[02:21] dinner i love that we've got the height

[02:23] of that balcony there because it is low

[02:25] otherwise but this is all part of the

[02:27] extension that was done in the 1970s and

[02:30] obviously we've got this enormous

[02:32] fireplace at christmas time we put the

[02:34] tree here and we move this armchair and

[02:36] decorate all of this with foliage and

[02:38] lights and a roaring fire and some tipsy

[02:40] person will get on the piano bash out a

[02:43] tune this was a gift from my first

[02:44] boyfriend which i've still got and i'm

[02:47] very attached to and i love all the

[02:48] colors in this space because although

[02:50] it's old it's got a kind of contemporary

[02:52] feel it's funny because it's such a cozy

[02:54] house but it really does work in the

[02:56] summer as well in lots of areas of the

[02:58] house we've added mirrors just to kind

[03:00] of create the illusion of more space and

[03:02] there is and there's a beautiful one

[03:04] there which is fun for kids to look at

[03:06] and perform in and

[03:08] the design of this was done as i said by

[03:10] gabby delau who is really my other

[03:13] mother i love colors and different

[03:15] textures this is a corduroy armchair we

[03:18] actually recovered this because it was

[03:19] my mum's

[03:20] from when she and my dad lived in hong

[03:22] kong it was a big white armchair that's

[03:24] completely falling apart but has

[03:26] sentimental value so it's recovered with

[03:28] kind of clashing prints the art is from

[03:31] all over the place this was a gift from

[03:33] my godmother christine this is a new

[03:35] artist who i met recently freda jones

[03:38] and she's brilliant but i love the

[03:40] details of the stained glass for example

[03:42] because of the light that it creates and

[03:44] i think gabby being a film director is

[03:46] very intensely focused on light and

[03:48] playing with that this used to be an old

[03:50] stable door and we've replaced it with a

[03:51] beautiful old door and lovely painted

[03:54] glass that's where we stock the booze

[03:56] you have to be quite creative with the

[03:57] little house of where you keep things

[03:59] well i can see a few spiderwebs but

[04:01] that's the countryside and wine

[04:03] essential and a country cottage

[04:09] this is the snuggly room where we all

[04:12] watch tv this is the old old part of the

[04:14] house and it used to be the kitchen so

[04:16] it's it's very very low but magical and

[04:19] cozy and in winter we light the fire and

[04:21] it's a beautiful old roaring fire and

[04:24] watch old movies at christmas and it's

[04:25] about as dreamy as it can be the color

[04:27] on the walls it's a cream color but it's

[04:29] also got a tiny hint of pink and gabby

[04:31] actually had this pigment made up so

[04:33] that it's got a real warmth but it's not

[04:34] too heavy this is by my godmother carol

[04:37] davis who's an extraordinary artist that

[04:39] was a christmas present from mum and i

[04:41] love mixing old style of painting with

[04:44] contemporary painting and there are all

[04:46] sorts of bits around the house that

[04:48] you'll see but she's pretty cool this

[04:49] lady all this part of the house from the

[04:52] 70s extension part is original and 16th

[04:56] century which is extraordinary that

[04:58] families in 1550 were living in this

[05:01] house and i really haven't touched

[05:03] anything not that i could because it's

[05:04] all landmark trusted but it's all

[05:06] original beams and the sense of history

[05:08] is really magical so these two

[05:10] pictures on the wall are by my friend an

[05:13] amazing director called john maybery and

[05:14] he came over to my flat when i was

[05:16] living in london and we had a late night

[05:18] and i woke up in the morning and there

[05:19] were these pictures oh look 2006 john

[05:22] mayberry yeah those are two of my

[05:23] favorite things i own and they're just

[05:25] on scrappy bits of cardboard but i think

[05:26] they really make the room magical

[05:29] because he's pretty magical so this is

[05:30] yeah this is where we relax this is it

[05:32] the snug not very big but very cozy

[05:37] [Music]

[05:42] this is the original staircase that we

[05:44] kind of scrubbed and

[05:46] painted there and we exposed this and

[05:48] made it into a bookshelf it's a funny

[05:51] amalgamation of kids books my copy from

[05:54] my classics class of the odyssey of

[05:56] homer with some notes in it very

[05:58] impressive some shakespeare history of

[06:00] england which i've pilfered from someone

[06:02] since stanislavski i went to the

[06:03] strasbourg school of acting and lee

[06:05] strasberg's inspiration was constantine

[06:08] stanislavski so this is called an

[06:09] actor's handbook that is well thumbed i

[06:11] can't remember reading it but i must

[06:13] have done because that's dogged maybe i

[06:15] gave up lots of history and memories

[06:17] there

[06:21] this is marlo's room

[06:24] there's marlo on the bed reading we love

[06:27] that book

[06:29] it's a greek mythology book we sound

[06:30] like a bunch of classicists and we

[06:32] aren't but i like what that says

[06:35] this room is really sweet it feels like

[06:37] something out of jane austen the beds

[06:39] are quite little for somebody who's

[06:40] growing quite fast but gabby was

[06:42] brilliant she found these this amazing

[06:44] linen and then it's actually wool and

[06:46] then she found sheepskins and she got

[06:47] them sewn onto the headboard so it's

[06:49] just a cozy detail for little girls

[06:51] going to sleep and again the windows are

[06:53] so small that it's hard to get curtains

[06:55] you don't want little crop curtains so

[06:57] we've got these sheepy bits of fabric

[06:59] that hook up and come down at night yeah

[07:02] this room is pretty much what it would

[07:03] have been we haven't done anything to it

[07:05] except paint it and move furniture

[07:07] around but it's got a really magical

[07:09] feel did you not manage to get that back

[07:11] up

[07:13] and we've hidden loads of the toys it's

[07:14] none of this house ever looks this tidy

[07:16] but that's the beauty of making a film

[07:18] [Music]

[07:21] leaving marlo's room this is the hallway

[07:23] this is the stairs we came up and i

[07:24] didn't show you that but that's a 1930s

[07:26] french london

[07:28] parisian lantern that i love there's a

[07:30] guest room again in lovely space and

[07:32] then this is the hallway we created this

[07:36] reading nook for marlo because there's

[07:38] not much space in this hobbity little

[07:39] house but we've got lots of her toys and

[07:42] books and in homeschooling there was a

[07:44] little desk there so she could look out

[07:45] at the meadow

[07:50] so this is my bedroom this has been

[07:52] completely changed and we could do that

[07:54] because it's the 1970s part of the house

[07:56] and it's not listed but this bedroom

[07:58] before kind of ended where those beams

[08:02] ended there was a cupboard there

[08:05] my bed was here it was really low and

[08:06] quite pokey and gabby had this genius

[08:09] idea to knock into the rafters and keep

[08:11] the beams as they were i actually just

[08:13] sometimes can't believe the difference

[08:14] in this bedroom i should try and find a

[08:16] photo of what it used to be like but it

[08:17] was nothing like this this incredible

[08:19] wallpaper is by maison c and i've been

[08:22] obsessed with that print sort of naked

[08:24] witchy ladies dancing which i think is

[08:25] appropriate for my mood and lying in

[08:28] here any time of year and being able to

[08:30] look out of the window gabby found these

[08:32] old doors with old panes of glass and

[08:34] we've got the murano lantern thing which

[08:36] does create the most magical light and

[08:38] then in summer i like to open these

[08:40] doors and sometimes sleep with them open

[08:42] and having them open and lying in bed or

[08:44] having them open with the bath and the

[08:46] bird song and the trees is definitely

[08:48] about as happy as i will ever be there's

[08:51] a plane going overhead because there's a

[08:53] flying school nearby but they're not

[08:54] ugly at all planes they're quite pretty

[08:56] some of them that's what you can hear

[08:57] there it's quite unfortunate

[09:02] [Music]

[09:05] this is the bathroom with old saloon

[09:08] doors a lovely shower these beautiful

[09:10] moroccan tiles but yeah here's some of

[09:12] my stuff a bit of my perfume which i

[09:14] love i'll add that now

[09:16] and then in here are all the cupboards

[09:18] hundreds of pairs of jeans and comfy

[09:20] jumpers this is where i keep the stuff

[09:22] that i probably wouldn't be seen in but

[09:24] is really snuggly snuggly clothes lots

[09:27] of tracksuit bottoms this is clever

[09:29] because the light comes on i love that

[09:31] when you open it you'll see everything

[09:32] is like a shearling or a bit of knitted

[09:34] sock it's cozy clothes when you're at

[09:36] thatch that's my closet

[09:38] the light does bring me a lot of joy but

[09:41] not much room to wear much makeup which

[09:43] is a good thing because

[09:44] i never wear makeup when i'm at this

[09:46] house ever who needs to

[09:52] so this is again this is part of the

[09:54] hallway and this is we call it the

[09:56] juliet balcony marlo sometimes stands up

[09:58] here with her friends and we'll put on

[09:59] performances and what's quite fun about

[10:01] that is there is this

[10:02] beautiful red velvet curtain that you

[10:05] can pull back in a very theatrical way

[10:07] this curtain was from my first ever flat

[10:10] in london it had really really tall

[10:13] ceilings and i had these made and then

[10:14] gabby

[10:15] line them with this fantastic old linen

[10:17] and they look so beautiful and yeah peek

[10:19] over the edge and see how good of a

[10:21] performance space this actually is

[10:23] because you can have dinner down there

[10:24] and look up at the kids

[10:28] [Music]

[10:30] come out into the garden the meadow

[10:33] there's a little pond there's marlo's

[10:35] play house and the barbecue but come to

[10:37] maybe the most romantic bedroom on the

[10:40] property

[10:42] these amazing old doors and this is what

[10:44] we call the outhouse where i send my

[10:46] friends who are madly enough because

[10:48] it's very romantic there's a

[10:50] wood-burning stove in winter people like

[10:52] to write or read here there's a little

[10:55] walk-in shower lou what i think is

[10:57] magical about this was that what it used

[10:59] to be was just a horrible storage space

[11:01] with old bicycles and old furniture and

[11:04] and it was nothing it was never used but

[11:06] it was always a really beautiful

[11:07] building gabby cleaned it all out and

[11:09] she added these amazing details on the

[11:12] roof their old signs that she found and

[11:15] embedded into the ceiling and that was a

[11:16] surprise the only thing that she didn't

[11:18] tell me she was doing it's details like

[11:20] that i just think add magical character

[11:22] to a place it's very peaceful in here

[11:24] and actually i need to come and spend a

[11:25] night in it because it's really really

[11:27] relaxing

[11:29] [Music]

[11:30] [Applause]

[11:33] so the cottage is on a private estate

[11:35] that has belonged to a family for

[11:36] hundreds of years and the gardens down

[11:38] at the bottom are designed by capability

[11:40] brown who was an extraordinary garden

[11:42] designer and they let me roam around

[11:43] their beautifully manicured park land

[11:46] that this property that belongs to me is

[11:47] about one and a half acres and it's the

[11:50] only freehold cottage on the estate but

[11:51] there's a game keeper up the road and

[11:53] there's somebody else who works on the

[11:55] estate down there so it feels very very

[11:57] isolated but it's nice to know that

[11:59] there are people nearby yeah this is the

[12:01] meadow

[12:11] thanks for coming ad i hope you enjoyed

[12:13] looking around my home

[12:15] come back anytime

[12:16] bye

[12:19] [Music]
