[00:03] hey guys it's alexandra from iloveknots.com
[00:06] today i'm going to show you how to make a suzette beanie
[00:11] suzette is comprised of single crochet double crochet into the same stitch and skipping the next one and it creates a really beautiful texture
[00:20] for my beanie i'm going to be using swish worsted weight yarn in dove heather
[00:26] this yarn is 100 marina wool but if you cannot use merino wool red heart soft is very similar
[00:35] this is a lighter worsted weight yarn if you can't handle wool but you can't you don't have access to this then lion brand woolies is also very nice
[00:48] i'm using an h8 5 millimeter crochet hook
[00:53] you're gonna need whatever crochet hook you need to meet gauge
[00:55] gauge is very important so that this beanie fits
[00:59] you're also going to need a soft tape measure so that you can measure your
[01:03] measure so that you can measure your gauge.
[01:05] gauge i'm going to be working this hat in a
[01:08] i'm going to be working this hat in a teen
[01:09] teen woman size which fits a 22 inch head.
[01:13] woman size which fits a 22 inch head circumference.
[01:16] circumference i'm gonna have all the other sizes on my
[01:19] i'm gonna have all the other sizes on my blog i love knots.com.
[01:27] to get started.
[01:29] to get started we are going to
[01:33] begin with a slip knot.
[01:37] so i have the
[01:39] so i have the tail end over my fingers.
[01:41] tail end over my fingers wrap it around my index finger two times.
[01:44] wrap it around my index finger two times take the one that's behind on the left.
[01:46] take the one that's behind on the left pull it up over the other loop but not
[01:48] pull it up over the other loop but not off my finger.
[01:49] off my finger then take the loop that's on the left.
[01:51] then take the loop that's on the left now pull it up over the other one and
[01:54] now pull it up over the other one and off my finger.
[01:55] off my finger then i insert my crochet hook into the
[01:57] then i insert my crochet hook into the loop that's on my finger.
[01:59] loop that's on my finger and
[02:00] and i hold the working yarn here and i pull.
[02:03] i hold the working yarn here and i pull the tail and it closes that loop up just.
[02:05] the tail and it closes that loop up just to normal tension.
[02:10] suzette stitch has to be worked in a.
[02:13] suzette stitch has to be worked in a multiple of two so our numbers are even.
[02:17] multiple of two so our numbers are even we're gonna begin the crown of our.
[02:19] we're gonna begin the crown of our beanie by working a chain four.
[02:22] beanie by working a chain four to chain we just yarn over the hook.
[02:25] to chain we just yarn over the hook pull through the loop.
[02:31] we don't count the loop that's on our.
[02:32] we don't count the loop that's on our hook there's one.
[02:34] hook there's one two three four the fourth one which is.
[02:37] two three four the fourth one which is the first chain we're going to insert.
[02:38] the first chain we're going to insert our hook.
[02:40] our hook yarn over pull through this loop and the.
[02:42] yarn over pull through this loop and the loop that's on our hook this is a slip.
[02:45] loop that's on our hook this is a slip stitch to form a ring.
[02:47] stitch to form a ring the hole that you see here is not the.
[02:49] the hole that you see here is not the ring it's actually right underneath that.
[02:53] ring it's actually right underneath that this hole on the top keeps getting.
[02:55] this hole on the top keeps getting bigger because this is not a secured.
[02:57] bigger because this is not a secured tail end but just make sure you're not.
[02:59] tail end but just make sure you're not working into that one.
[03:01] working into that one we're gonna start with a chain two.
[03:04] we're gonna start with a chain two in the crown this does not count as a.
[03:07] in the crown this does not count as a stitch
[03:09] stitch and then we're going to work 10 double
[03:11] and then we're going to work 10 double crochets into the ring to work a double
[03:14] crochets into the ring to work a double crochet i'm going to yarn over my hook
[03:17] crochet i'm going to yarn over my hook then i'm going to insert into the ring
[03:19] then i'm going to insert into the ring the ring is right there in the center
[03:22] the ring is right there in the center not this top hole the center
[03:25] not this top hole the center insert my hook right into the center
[03:28] insert my hook right into the center working over the loop the
[03:30] working over the loop the the ring
[03:31] the ring yarn over pull through i have three
[03:34] yarn over pull through i have three loops on my hook
[03:35] loops on my hook yarn over pull through two loops
[03:38] yarn over pull through two loops yarn over pull through two loops
[03:42] yarn over pull through two loops as i work this ring i'm going to
[03:45] as i work this ring i'm going to keep my beginning tail end
[03:47] keep my beginning tail end right behind
[03:49] right behind the stitches and i want to crochet over
[03:51] the stitches and i want to crochet over that
[03:52] that so we'll work another double crochet
[03:53] so we'll work another double crochet i'll show you
[03:55] i'll show you yarn over insert right into the center
[03:57] yarn over insert right into the center ring
[03:59] ring and you have the the chain
[04:01] and you have the the chain right over top of your hook because
[04:03] right over top of your hook because you're crocheting over it yarn over pull
[04:05] you're crocheting over it yarn over pull through
[04:06] through three loops yarn over pull through two
[04:09] three loops yarn over pull through two yarn over pull through two
[04:11] yarn over pull through two and as we work we're just going to keep
[04:13] and as we work we're just going to keep our tail up against our chain and we're
[04:15] our tail up against our chain and we're going to crochet over it so we can close
[04:17] going to crochet over it so we can close up that hole easily
[04:19] up that hole easily so this chain 2 does not count as a
[04:22] so this chain 2 does not count as a stitch here we have one two double
[04:24] stitch here we have one two double crochet i want 10 double crochets in
[04:26] crochet i want 10 double crochets in total
[04:42] i have ten double crochets if you need
[04:44] i have ten double crochets if you need help counting you look at the top where
[04:47] help counting you look at the top where it looks like a v
[04:49] it looks like a v that's
[04:50] that's one stitch two
[04:52] one stitch two three
[04:53] three four all the way around
[04:55] four all the way around and that's a good way to find out where
[04:57] and that's a good way to find out where the first stitch is if you're not sure
[04:59] the first stitch is if you're not sure because you're going to be slip
[04:59] because you're going to be slip stitching here one two three four five
[05:02] stitching here one two three four five six seven eight nine ten
[05:05] six seven eight nine ten insert your hook under both
[05:07] insert your hook under both loops of that stitch
[05:10] loops of that stitch yarn over pull through that stitch and
[05:12] yarn over pull through that stitch and the loop that's on your hook you're
[05:14] the loop that's on your hook you're going to slip stitch joint at the end of
[05:15] going to slip stitch joint at the end of each row this beginning tail
[05:18] each row this beginning tail we can now hold the fabric with our
[05:20] we can now hold the fabric with our right hand and pull
[05:21] right hand and pull and it'll close up that center ring
[05:25] and it'll close up that center ring and we'll secure it later when we weave
[05:27] and we'll secure it later when we weave in our ends but for now we're just going
[05:28] in our ends but for now we're just going to leave it there
[05:31] to leave it there round one is complete we have 10
[05:33] round one is complete we have 10 stitches
[05:35] stitches i'm going to show you how i work my
[05:38] i'm going to show you how i work my crowns in my beanies so that my seam
[05:41] crowns in my beanies so that my seam stays straight
[05:44] stays straight and this is a
[05:45] and this is a non-traditional way this is not how most
[05:47] non-traditional way this is not how most bloggers do it i have not seen it done
[05:49] bloggers do it i have not seen it done this way before
[05:51] this way before but
[05:52] but this will ensure that my seam remains
[05:54] this will ensure that my seam remains straight which will be less noticeable
[05:58] and i'm going to show you exactly how to
[06:00] and i'm going to show you exactly how to do it basically
[06:02] do it basically or typically you would work
[06:04] or typically you would work your increases as two stitches into the
[06:06] your increases as two stitches into the first stitch and then
[06:08] first stitch and then let's say one stitch into the next two
[06:10] let's say one stitch into the next two into the next one into the next but i
[06:13] into the next one into the next but i take that first increase instead of
[06:15] take that first increase instead of working two stitches into this first one
[06:17] working two stitches into this first one i only work one stitch
[06:19] i only work one stitch and then after i work all the way around
[06:22] and then after i work all the way around i work the second stitch of it
[06:25] i work the second stitch of it into the same stitch as the first the
[06:28] into the same stitch as the first the first
[06:29] first half the first stitch goes into it on
[06:32] half the first stitch goes into it on the left of the beginning chain
[06:34] the left of the beginning chain and the last stitch goes into the first
[06:37] and the last stitch goes into the first stitch but on the right side of the
[06:39] stitch but on the right side of the beginning chain
[06:41] and i'm going to show you what i mean
[06:45] and i'm going to show you what i mean we're going to start this round with a
[06:46] we're going to start this round with a chain two remember that in the
[06:48] chain two remember that in the increasing part the chain two does not
[06:51] increasing part the chain two does not count as a stitch
[06:53] count as a stitch we're going to double crochet into the
[06:55] we're going to double crochet into the first stitch
[07:00] and again typically you would work two
[07:02] and again typically you would work two stitches into this but i am going to
[07:04] stitches into this but i am going to wait until i get all the way around and
[07:05] wait until i get all the way around and then work my last stitch into the first
[07:08] then work my last stitch into the first one on this side
[07:11] then we're gonna work two stitches
[07:13] then we're gonna work two stitches two double crochets into the next stitch
[07:21] and that is the repeater
[07:22] and that is the repeater all the way across it's two double
[07:25] all the way across it's two double crochets into each stitch
[07:33] i always pretend there's already two
[07:35] i always pretend there's already two stitches here because it makes it easier
[07:36] stitches here because it makes it easier in my counting
[07:38] in my counting two four six
[07:41] two four six you work all the way around working two
[07:43] you work all the way around working two double crochets into each stitch
[07:45] double crochets into each stitch at the end of the round we're going to
[07:46] at the end of the round we're going to have 20 double crochets
[07:49] have 20 double crochets and then once i get to the end over here
[07:52] and then once i get to the end over here i'm going to show you how i work my last
[07:53] i'm going to show you how i work my last stitch
[08:19] All right, so I've been counting in my head.
[08:20] All right, so I've been counting in my head as if this first stitch had two.
[08:23] And now I have reached 20 stitches.
[08:25] But I actually only have 19 because I need to work the last stitch of this first increase.
[08:30] I'm going to yarn over my hook.
[08:35] I'm going to yarn over my hook.
[08:37] Here's our first double crochet.
[08:39] I'm gonna work into this stitch right here.
[08:42] Which I, I say, is the first stitch.
[08:45] The same as the first right here.
[08:50] If you, if you worked into the exact stitch of the first, it would just cross over here.
[08:56] But I work right here into the join, which I consider the first stitch.
[08:59] Still because it's attached to the chain.
[09:02] So I'm going to insert my hook right in there.
[09:06] And it comes out right on the right side of the beginning chain two.
[09:09] And then I complete my double crochet.
[09:15] And that is officially the 20th stitch.
[09:18] Insert my hook into the first stitch.
[09:21] insert my hook into the first stitch and slip stitch join.
[09:24] and slip stitch join i hope that makes sense.
[09:26] i hope that makes sense i hope it gets easier as the rounds go.
[09:28] i hope it gets easier as the rounds go on but if you have any questions about
[09:30] on but if you have any questions about my method.
[09:32] my method just
[09:33] just leave me a comment below and i will try
[09:35] leave me a comment below and i will try my best to answer that.
[09:39] my best to answer that for
[09:39] for round three.
[09:41] round three we're going to begin with the chain two.
[09:44] we're going to begin with the chain two the repeat for this one before was two.
[09:46] the repeat for this one before was two stitches into each stitch around.
[09:49] stitches into each stitch around now we're gonna do two stitches into one.
[09:51] now we're gonna do two stitches into one stitch.
[09:52] stitch one stitch into the next two stitches.
[09:54] one stitch into the next two stitches into the next stitch one stitch into the.
[09:57] into the next stitch one stitch into the next.
[09:58] next i'm going to
[09:59] i'm going to only work one double crochet into this.
[10:01] only work one double crochet into this first one.
[10:03] first one because i'm going to do the same exact.
[10:04] because i'm going to do the same exact thing as i did before where i work the.
[10:06] thing as i did before where i work the second half over here.
[10:10] so that's we're pretending this is two.
[10:12] so that's we're pretending this is two stitches and then one stitch into the.
[10:14] stitches and then one stitch into the next.
[10:17] next two double crochets into the next stitch.
[10:22] one double crochet into the next stitch.
[10:25] one double crochet into the next stitch and continue working two double crochets.
[10:27] and continue working two double crochets into the next stitch one double crochet.
[10:29] into the next stitch one double crochet into the next stitch.
[10:31] into the next stitch once you get all the way around you're.
[10:33] once you get all the way around you're going to have 30 stitches in this round.
[10:36] going to have 30 stitches in this round in total.
[10:38] in total so i'm going to work my final stitch.
[10:41] so i'm going to work my final stitch over here and then i will work.
[10:43] over here and then i will work not the final.
[10:44] not the final because i have one more stitch to go.
[10:46] because i have one more stitch to go right in the front in the front in the.
[10:48] right in the front in the front in the first stitch that will complete this.
[10:50] first stitch that will complete this first increase so that will also have.
[10:52] first increase so that will also have two.
[10:53] two two stitches one stitch two stitches one.
[10:57] two stitches one stitch two stitches one so now i'm going to keep working around.
[11:43] all right so this row i have just finished my last repeat.
[11:48] now i'm going to work my very last stitch.
[11:51] which is the second half of this first increase.
[11:54] remember we work one stitch into the first just to the left of the beginning chain and the last stitch of that one goes into the same as the first.
[12:05] but it comes out just to the right of the beginning chain two.
[12:13] and then i slip stitch joint to the first stitch.
[12:18] this is round three and round three has 30 double crochets.
[12:24] for round four we're going to chain two.
[12:30] the repeat for round four is two double crochets into one stitch double crochet into the next two.
[12:36] so we're gonna work our increase the same way as before.
[12:40] one double crochet into that first stitch.
[12:43] stitch pretending there's two.
[12:47] one double crochet into the next stitch.
[12:49] one double crochet into the next stitch.
[12:49] one double crochet into the next stitch.
[12:53] one double crochet into the next stitch.
[12:53] two double crochets into the next stitch.
[12:59] one double crochet into each of the next.
[13:01] one double crochet into each of the next two stitches.
[13:05] continue working all the way around two.
[13:07] continue working all the way around two double crochets into the next stitch.
[13:09] one double crochets into the next stitch.
[13:09] one double crochet into each of the next two.
[13:12] double crochet into each of the next two stitches.
[13:13] stitches and after you work your last stitch over.
[13:16] and after you work your last stitch over here we'll work the final.
[13:19] here we'll work the final stitch in the first stitch and then.
[13:21] stitch in the first stitch and then we'll slip stitch join and round four.
[13:23] we'll slip stitch join and round four will have 40 double crochets.
[14:14] so right i've worked my
[14:17] so right i've worked my last repeat i'm going to work my last
[14:19] last repeat i'm going to work my last stitch into the first stitch
[14:24] and now that completes row 4 with 40
[14:27] and now that completes row 4 with 40 double crochets slip stitch joined to
[14:29] double crochets slip stitch joined to the first
[14:31] the first i'm going to pull up this loop so i
[14:33] i'm going to pull up this loop so i don't lose it and i'm going to take my
[14:34] don't lose it and i'm going to take my gauge now
[14:38] i want to touch base on the front of
[14:41] i want to touch base on the front of this if the front of your um
[14:45] this if the front of your um circle is like puffed up a little bit
[14:47] circle is like puffed up a little bit it's okay
[14:49] it's okay as long as you have the same number of
[14:51] as long as you have the same number of stitches
[14:52] stitches 40 double crochets at the end of round
[14:54] 40 double crochets at the end of round four 30 double crochets before that 20
[14:57] four 30 double crochets before that 20 double crochets as long as you're
[14:59] double crochets as long as you're increasing as you're supposed to
[15:02] increasing as you're supposed to you can finger press it and it lays flat
[15:04] you can finger press it and it lays flat it's fine
[15:06] it's fine you don't want it to
[15:09] to sort of take this bowl shape
[15:14] it's doing it now because i just formed
[15:16] it's doing it now because i just formed it to do that but you don't want it to.
[15:17] it to do that but you don't want it to regularly be doing this you want it to.
[15:20] regularly be doing this you want it to be able to lay flat.
[15:22] be able to lay flat if yours is cupping too much it means.
[15:24] if yours is cupping too much it means that you may have missed a stitch so i.
[15:26] that you may have missed a stitch so i recommend counting.
[15:28] recommend counting using those v stitches along the top.
[15:32] but we're going to take our gauge right.
[15:34] but we're going to take our gauge right now to make sure that we are on the.
[15:35] now to make sure that we are on the correct.
[15:36] correct path so our finished hat comes out to.
[15:39] path so our finished hat comes out to the correct size so i'm going to take my.
[15:41] the correct size so i'm going to take my soft tape measure.
[15:44] and this should be.
[15:47] about three and three quarter inches.
[15:50] about three and three quarter inches so to take gauge on a circle we're.
[15:52] so to take gauge on a circle we're measuring the diameter which is the.
[15:54] measuring the diameter which is the width directly across the center of the.
[15:56] width directly across the center of the circle.
[15:57] circle so i put my ruler on the left side and.
[16:02] so i put my ruler on the left side and measure all the way to the right side.
[16:03] measure all the way to the right side across the very center of the circle.
[16:07] across the very center of the circle and it says i have three and three.
[16:09] and it says i have three and three quarter inches.
[16:10] quarter inches which is exactly what i want it to be.
[16:16] we're going to continue on to round five.
[16:19] we're going to continue on to round five chain two.
[16:22] chain two the repeat for this is two double.
[16:23] the repeat for this is two double crochets into the first stitch double.
[16:25] crochets into the first stitch double crochet into each of the next three.
[16:27] crochet into each of the next three stitches.
[16:28] stitches so begin with just one double crochet.
[16:30] so begin with just one double crochet here.
[16:32] here as we'll work the second one.
[16:34] as we'll work the second one at the end one double crochet into each.
[16:37] at the end one double crochet into each of the next three.
[16:38] of the next three stitches.
[16:46] double crochet two double crochets into.
[16:48] double crochet two double crochets into the next stitch.
[16:52] double crochet into each of the next.
[16:54] double crochet into each of the next three stitches.
[17:01] and that is what you will continue.
[17:03] and that is what you will continue working all the way around two double.
[17:05] working all the way around two double crochets into the next stitch.
[17:07] crochets into the next stitch three double crochet i'm sorry two.
[17:09] three double crochet i'm sorry two double crochets into the next stitch.
[17:10] double crochets into the next stitch double crochet into each of the next.
[17:12] double crochet into each of the next three stitches.
[17:14] three stitches at the end.
[17:16] at the end over here we'll work our very last.
[17:18] over here we'll work our very last stitch into the first and we'll end.
[17:20] stitch into the first and we'll end round 5 with 50 double crochets.
[18:24] I've just worked the last stitch in my last repeat.
[18:28] I'm going to work the last stitch into the first stitch.
[18:37] And I will slip stitch join to the first.
[18:43] This completes round five.
[18:45] Round five has 50 double crochets.
[18:49] For row or round six, we're going to start with the chain two.
[18:57] The repeat is two double crochets into uh one stitch.
[19:00] One double crochet into e to the next four stitches.
[19:04] So we're going to start with one double crochet into this first stitch.
[19:07] We'll work the second half of that one later.
[19:11] One double crochet into each of the next four stitches.
[19:22] Then we begin the repeat again two.
[19:24] then we begin the repeat again two double crochets into the next stitch.
[19:28] double crochet into each of the next.
[19:30] double crochet into each of the next four stitches.
[19:36] one.
[19:41] two.
[19:41] three.
[19:41] four.
[19:42] four we will continue working all the way.
[19:44] we will continue working all the way around.
[19:45] around two double crochets into the next stitch.
[19:47] two double crochets into the next stitch one double crochet into each of the next.
[19:49] one double crochet into each of the next four stitches.
[19:51] four stitches after we work the last stitch of our.
[19:53] after we work the last stitch of our last increase we'll work the very last.
[19:55] last increase we'll work the very last stitch into the first stitch and at the.
[19:57] stitch into the first stitch and at the end of round six we will have 60 double.
[20:00] end of round six we will have 60 double crochets.
[21:12] all right there we are at the end of our repeat.
[21:16] i am going to work the very last stitch into that first stitch.
[21:22] and slip stitch join to complete round six.
[21:26] and round six has 60 double crochets.
[21:31] and again i said you know if your hat poofs up it's okay as long as it lays flat and your increases are okay.
[21:38] you just don't want it to be completely in that bowl shape you want it to be getting larger and laying flat when you wear it.
[21:43] you won't notice this slight puffiness that it has.
[21:49] the child teen and adult small size is all at the next one that will be working.
[21:55] which is going to be 70 double crochets.
[22:00] so to do that we're going to chain two.
[22:01] we'll work a double crochet into the first stitch.
[22:08] double crochet into each of the next five stitches.
[22:22] then our repeat begins two double
[22:24] then our repeat begins two double crochets into the next stitch
[22:28] double crochet into each of the next
[22:30] double crochet into each of the next five
[22:31] five one
[22:33] one two
[22:36] three
[22:39] four
[22:42] and five and we continue working this
[22:44] and five and we continue working this way all the way around
[22:46] way all the way around two double crochets into the next stitch
[22:48] two double crochets into the next stitch double crochet into each of the next
[22:50] double crochet into each of the next five stitches
[22:52] five stitches then after we finish our last repeat
[22:54] then after we finish our last repeat down here we'll work the last stitch
[22:56] down here we'll work the last stitch into the first one slip stitch joint and
[22:58] into the first one slip stitch joint and we'll have 70 double crochets in this
[23:01] we'll have 70 double crochets in this round
[23:58] so
[24:24] worked my last repeat now i'm going to
[24:26] worked my last repeat now i'm going to work the very last stitch into the first
[24:27] work the very last stitch into the first stitch
[24:29] stitch slip stitch join and now this is the end
[24:32] slip stitch join and now this is the end of round seven i have seventy double
[24:34] of round seven i have seventy double crochets
[24:35] crochets my diameter should be let's see six
[24:39] my diameter should be let's see six and five sixteens
[24:46] or
[24:50] around three uh six and three eighths
[24:54] around three uh six and three eighths this is going to fit a child 18
[24:57] this is going to fit a child 18 and adult small which is typically the
[25:01] and adult small which is typically the woman's size this
[25:03] woman's size this fits a head size of 21 to 22 inches in
[25:07] fits a head size of 21 to 22 inches in circumference
[25:09] circumference so we are done increasing now we are no
[25:12] so we are done increasing now we are no longer going to be increasing each time
[25:15] longer going to be increasing each time we worked another round we increased we
[25:16] we worked another round we increased we went from 10 stitches to 20 stitches to
[25:18] went from 10 stitches to 20 stitches to 30 stitches to 40 stitches now you're
[25:20] 30 stitches to 40 stitches now you're not increasing anymore so it's going to
[25:22] not increasing anymore so it's going to be 60 stitches in each round until you
[25:26] be 60 stitches in each round until you finish this hat
[25:29] finish this hat now we're gonna work
[25:30] now we're gonna work round eight and round eight is just
[25:32] round eight and round eight is just gonna be
[25:34] gonna be a
[25:35] a just a plain row of double crochet
[25:38] just a plain row of double crochet so we're gonna chain two
[25:41] so we're gonna chain two here in the body we have just finished
[25:44] here in the body we have just finished the crown in the crown the chain two did
[25:46] the crown in the crown the chain two did not count as a stitch
[25:49] not count as a stitch in the body
[25:51] in the body we are going to count it as a stitch
[25:55] we are going to count it as a stitch so
[25:56] so that is our very first stitch
[25:58] that is our very first stitch we are not going to work a stitch into
[26:00] we are not going to work a stitch into that one we are going to work a stitch
[26:01] that one we are going to work a stitch into the next stitch which is the second
[26:03] into the next stitch which is the second stitch
[26:04] stitch so the chain two is coming out of this
[26:06] so the chain two is coming out of this very first stitch we are going to not
[26:08] very first stitch we are going to not work into that one but double crochet
[26:09] work into that one but double crochet into the next one
[26:13] and continue double crocheting all the
[26:15] and continue double crocheting all the way around counting this chain two as a
[26:18] way around counting this chain two as a stitch right now we have three stitches
[26:21] stitch right now we have three stitches we need
[26:22] we need 70 stitches
[28:01] i've just worked
[28:02] i've just worked my 70th stitch i am going to insert my
[28:05] my 70th stitch i am going to insert my hook into the second chain
[28:07] hook into the second chain one two the second chain at the
[28:09] one two the second chain at the beginning chain two
[28:11] beginning chain two insert my hook yarn over and complete a
[28:13] insert my hook yarn over and complete a slip
[28:14] slip stitch that is
[28:17] stitch that is round 8 finished 70 double crochets
[28:21] round 8 finished 70 double crochets i'm going to
[28:23] i'm going to switch my crochet hook i've been using
[28:26] switch my crochet hook i've been using an h8 5 millimeter crochet hook
[28:29] an h8 5 millimeter crochet hook now i'm going to switch to a bigger
[28:31] now i'm going to switch to a bigger crochet hook an i9
[28:34] crochet hook an i9 5.5 millimeter crochet hook
[28:36] 5.5 millimeter crochet hook and the reason why i'm doing this is
[28:38] and the reason why i'm doing this is because
[28:39] because the susette stitch pattern
[28:43] the susette stitch pattern is much tighter
[28:45] is much tighter because it's skipping a skit uh skipping
[28:47] because it's skipping a skit uh skipping a stitch and
[28:49] a stitch and has single crochets in there
[28:52] has single crochets in there and it makes the fabric
[28:54] and it makes the fabric much tighter so the overall beanie is
[28:57] much tighter so the overall beanie is tighter
[28:59] tighter and i want it to fit more comfortable
[29:01] and i want it to fit more comfortable more
[29:02] more loosely
[29:03] loosely more stretchy
[29:05] more stretchy so i'm going up to this bigger hook size
[29:07] so i'm going up to this bigger hook size just for the susette stitch pattern
[29:12] just for the susette stitch pattern to begin
[29:13] to begin we're going to chain one
[29:18] we're going to single crochet
[29:20] we're going to single crochet into the first stitch which is that
[29:24] into the first stitch which is that chain that we slip stitch to
[29:27] chain that we slip stitch to so we'll insert our hook into that
[29:28] so we'll insert our hook into that stitch yarn over pull through we have
[29:31] stitch yarn over pull through we have two loops on our hook
[29:33] two loops on our hook yarn over pull through both loops
[29:36] yarn over pull through both loops then we'll double crochet into the same
[29:38] then we'll double crochet into the same stitch
[29:46] and that is the susette stitch pattern
[29:48] and that is the susette stitch pattern it is a single crochet and a double
[29:50] it is a single crochet and a double crochet into the same stitch skip the
[29:52] crochet into the same stitch skip the next stitch
[29:54] next stitch then we single crochet
[29:58] then we single crochet and double crochet
[29:59] and double crochet into the next stitch
[30:04] then we skip the next stitch
[30:06] then we skip the next stitch we single crochet into the next one
[30:08] we single crochet into the next one insert our hook
[30:09] insert our hook yarn over pull through two loops yarn
[30:12] yarn over pull through two loops yarn over pull through both
[30:14] over pull through both and then double crochet into the next
[30:15] and then double crochet into the next into the same stitch
[30:19] so
[30:20] so single crochet and double crochet into
[30:22] single crochet and double crochet into the same stitch skip the next one
[30:25] the same stitch skip the next one single crochet double crochet into the
[30:27] single crochet double crochet into the next stitch skip the next one
[30:29] next stitch skip the next one you're going to continue working all the
[30:30] you're going to continue working all the way around
[30:32] way around when you get to the end you're going to
[30:34] when you get to the end you're going to work your last um
[30:37] work your last um your last cluster in this stitch over
[30:39] your last cluster in this stitch over here and you'll have this stitch left
[30:42] here and you'll have this stitch left one stitch left and that's the one that
[30:44] one stitch left and that's the one that you'll be skipping then we'll slip
[30:46] you'll be skipping then we'll slip stitch join to the first stitch
[32:38] alright i just worked my last cluster
[32:41] alright i just worked my last cluster and i have this stitch here that i'm
[32:44] and i have this stitch here that i'm skipping so there is an empty stitch
[32:46] skipping so there is an empty stitch here and then i will slip stitch join
[32:49] here and then i will slip stitch join to the first stitch which is a single
[32:51] to the first stitch which is a single crochet
[32:56] now i will chain one and turn
[32:59] now i will chain one and turn and in the crown we did not chain and
[33:03] and in the crown we did not chain and turn
[33:04] turn but in the slanted in the uh susette
[33:06] but in the slanted in the uh susette stitch pattern we will be chaining one
[33:09] stitch pattern we will be chaining one and turning at the end
[33:11] and turning at the end of every row
[33:12] of every row every round
[33:16] when you look at these stitches
[33:19] when you look at these stitches the shorter smaller stitch is the single
[33:22] the shorter smaller stitch is the single crochet
[33:23] crochet and the longer taller stitch is the
[33:26] and the longer taller stitch is the double crochet
[33:28] double crochet we will always work the susette stitch
[33:30] we will always work the susette stitch pattern into the single crochets and
[33:33] pattern into the single crochets and skip the double crochets
[33:36] skip the double crochets the first stitch we're going to put into
[33:37] the first stitch we're going to put into the stitch this very first stitch that
[33:40] the stitch this very first stitch that almost seems like it's behind us
[33:43] almost seems like it's behind us that's where we're going to insert our
[33:45] that's where we're going to insert our hook
[33:46] hook and do our single crochet
[33:49] and do our single crochet and our double crochet from our first
[33:51] and our double crochet from our first cluster
[33:55] and that's going to help keep our seams
[33:57] and that's going to help keep our seams straight in our beanie
[33:59] straight in our beanie by ch by chaining one and turning and by
[34:03] by ch by chaining one and turning and by working into this first
[34:04] working into this first stitch
[34:06] stitch so we have our first cluster
[34:08] so we have our first cluster done we're going to skip the next stitch
[34:10] done we're going to skip the next stitch which is the double crochet and we'll
[34:12] which is the double crochet and we'll work our next cluster into the next
[34:14] work our next cluster into the next stitch which is a single crochet
[34:20] then we'll skip the next stitch and
[34:22] then we'll skip the next stitch and we'll work another cluster into the next
[34:24] we'll work another cluster into the next stitch
[34:25] stitch and we're going to continue working the
[34:27] and we're going to continue working the same way as we did before single crochet
[34:30] same way as we did before single crochet and double crochet into one stitch skip
[34:32] and double crochet into one stitch skip the next stitch
[34:33] the next stitch all the way around and when you get to
[34:36] all the way around and when you get to the end of this round your last cluster
[34:38] the end of this round your last cluster will be here in this single crochet
[34:40] will be here in this single crochet and you will skip this double crochet
[34:42] and you will skip this double crochet just as you did before skipping a stitch
[34:44] just as you did before skipping a stitch at the end and slip stitch join to the
[34:47] at the end and slip stitch join to the beginning
[35:24] so
[36:26] last cluster is finished i have one
[36:28] last cluster is finished i have one stitch left which i'll be skipping
[36:30] stitch left which i'll be skipping insert into the first stitch
[36:34] insert into the first stitch and slip stitch
[36:38] and then we chain one and turn and we
[36:39] and then we chain one and turn and we repeat the same thing over and over
[36:41] repeat the same thing over and over again until we reach the length that we
[36:43] again until we reach the length that we like we'll be
[36:44] like we'll be working into this first stitch that's
[36:47] working into this first stitch that's sort of behind us single crochet
[36:50] sort of behind us single crochet then double crochet
[36:53] skip the next stitch which is a double
[36:55] skip the next stitch which is a double crochet and we'll single crochet
[36:58] crochet and we'll single crochet and double crochet into the next stitch
[37:00] and double crochet into the next stitch which is a single crochet from the
[37:02] which is a single crochet from the previous round
[37:04] previous round skip the next stitch and work another
[37:05] skip the next stitch and work another cluster and that's how you work all the
[37:07] cluster and that's how you work all the way around
[37:09] way around i am going to work off camera until i
[37:11] i am going to work off camera until i get to a length that i'm happy with
[37:15] get to a length that i'm happy with for
[37:16] for a teen
[37:18] a teen adult small
[37:21] adult small woman's beanie
[37:24] woman's beanie you're gonna want the average size is
[37:26] you're gonna want the average size is eight and a half inches
[37:28] eight and a half inches long starting from up here all the way
[37:30] long starting from up here all the way down
[37:32] down i personally don't like my beanies to be
[37:34] i personally don't like my beanies to be quite that long it's a little bit too
[37:36] quite that long it's a little bit too much fabric for me so i'm going
[37:38] much fabric for me so i'm going i want to work until i'm around eight
[37:40] i want to work until i'm around eight inches long
[37:42] inches long and then i'll put a single crochet edge
[37:45] and then i'll put a single crochet edge on the bottom so i can get a little over
[37:47] on the bottom so i can get a little over eight inches
[37:50] eight inches but if you want to work the average size
[37:52] but if you want to work the average size that will cover
[37:54] that will cover the
[37:56] the the bottom of your ears mine typically
[37:58] the bottom of your ears mine typically don't cover the bottom of my ears
[38:02] don't cover the bottom of my ears but if you want a longer beanie
[38:05] but if you want a longer beanie go with the average size eight and a
[38:07] go with the average size eight and a half
[38:08] half before you fasten off just make sure you
[38:09] before you fasten off just make sure you try it on so you can make sure it fits
[38:11] try it on so you can make sure it fits you the way that you'd like it to fit
[38:14] you the way that you'd like it to fit but i'm gonna work off camera until i
[38:16] but i'm gonna work off camera until i get it to around eight inches measuring
[38:18] get it to around eight inches measuring from the top down to the bottom
[38:20] from the top down to the bottom if you're going with the average size
[38:22] if you're going with the average size you want to get to about
[38:24] you want to get to about eight and a quarter inches long
[38:27] eight and a quarter inches long and then we'll put a final single
[38:29] and then we'll put a final single crochet edge on it i just finished row
[38:32] crochet edge on it i just finished row 24
[38:34] and my beanie is currently measuring 8
[38:37] and my beanie is currently measuring 8 inches long
[38:39] inches long i don't like my beanies to be too
[38:42] i don't like my beanies to be too long the extra fabric
[38:45] long the extra fabric i just don't like it so i'm going to
[38:46] i just don't like it so i'm going to stop here after round 24
[38:50] stop here after round 24 and add in another round of single
[38:53] and add in another round of single crochet and then i'm going to fasten off
[38:54] crochet and then i'm going to fasten off my beanie the average length for a
[38:57] my beanie the average length for a woman's
[38:58] woman's size beanie or the adult small
[39:02] size beanie or the adult small is
[39:03] is eight and a half inches
[39:05] eight and a half inches so if you
[39:08] so if you work 25 rounds
[39:11] work 25 rounds you'll be about 8 and 1 8 inches
[39:15] you'll be about 8 and 1 8 inches and then add the additional round of
[39:17] and then add the additional round of single crochet and you'll be right there
[39:19] single crochet and you'll be right there on the average of eight and a half
[39:21] on the average of eight and a half inches
[39:23] inches i'm doing mine 24 inches plus a single
[39:26] i'm doing mine 24 inches plus a single crochet
[39:28] crochet so that my beanie is not as long if you
[39:30] so that my beanie is not as long if you want to do yours the average size of
[39:32] want to do yours the average size of eight and a half inches
[39:34] eight and a half inches do 25 rounds
[39:36] do 25 rounds and then add the 26th round of single
[39:40] and then add the 26th round of single crochet
[39:42] crochet and you want the single crochet to be on
[39:44] and you want the single crochet to be on the right side of the fabric
[39:47] the right side of the fabric so at the end of
[39:48] so at the end of my round 24
[39:52] i'm turning to the right side to work
[39:55] i'm turning to the right side to work but if you work
[39:57] but if you work the
[39:59] additional round 25
[40:04] then you'll want to do
[40:06] then you'll want to do round 26 from the right side
[40:16] because this is row 24 row 25 would
[40:19] because this is row 24 row 25 would start here from the right side
[40:22] start here from the right side row 26 would technically be on the wrong
[40:24] row 26 would technically be on the wrong side because you're turning but we don't
[40:25] side because you're turning but we don't want to turn we want to work from the
[40:27] want to turn we want to work from the right side
[40:29] right side i'm going to go ahead and show you how
[40:31] i'm going to go ahead and show you how to work the single crochet edging
[40:33] to work the single crochet edging it's single crochet into the first
[40:35] it's single crochet into the first stitch and each stitch around
[40:38] stitch and each stitch around we've been working into this stitch
[40:41] we've been working into this stitch behind us
[40:42] behind us for our clusters
[40:44] for our clusters but for this round of single crochet i'm
[40:46] but for this round of single crochet i'm going to go ahead and just work into the
[40:49] going to go ahead and just work into the to the first stitch that i see here
[40:50] to the first stitch that i see here which is the double crochet stitch it's
[40:52] which is the double crochet stitch it's one of the longer ones
[40:54] one of the longer ones and i'm keeping my i9 5.5 millimeter
[40:58] and i'm keeping my i9 5.5 millimeter crochet hook for this part because
[40:59] crochet hook for this part because single crochet can really limit the
[41:01] single crochet can really limit the amount of stretch
[41:03] amount of stretch and so it's recommended you do it
[41:05] and so it's recommended you do it loosely well if you do it with the
[41:07] loosely well if you do it with the larger hook size it's really
[41:09] larger hook size it's really a lot easier to keep that loose tension
[41:14] so i'm just going to insert my hook into
[41:16] so i'm just going to insert my hook into the first stitch yarn over pull through
[41:18] the first stitch yarn over pull through two loops yarn over pull through both
[41:20] two loops yarn over pull through both loops that's a single crochet
[41:23] loops that's a single crochet and i'm just single crocheting into each
[41:26] and i'm just single crocheting into each stitch
[41:27] stitch all the way around
[41:29] all the way around at the end of this round i'm going to
[41:30] at the end of this round i'm going to have
[41:31] have 70
[41:32] 70 single crochets
[42:39] so
[42:56] this
[42:58] this there's my 70th single crochet now i'm
[43:01] there's my 70th single crochet now i'm just going to insert my hook into the
[43:02] just going to insert my hook into the first single crochet and slip stitch
[43:04] first single crochet and slip stitch join
[43:07] and now my beanie
[43:09] and now my beanie is finished i just need to weave in my
[43:11] is finished i just need to weave in my ends before i do that i'm going to go
[43:13] ends before i do that i'm going to go ahead i'm just pulling up a big loop so
[43:15] ahead i'm just pulling up a big loop so i don't lose the stitch i'm going to go
[43:17] i don't lose the stitch i'm going to go ahead and try my beanie on just to make
[43:18] ahead and try my beanie on just to make sure that it fits me the way that i want
[43:20] sure that it fits me the way that i want to
[43:21] to before i fasten off and then i'll come
[43:23] before i fasten off and then i'll come back fasten off and weave in my ends
[43:26] back fasten off and weave in my ends all right i tried it on it's great i'm
[43:29] all right i tried it on it's great i'm going to go ahead and fasten off my yarn
[43:30] going to go ahead and fasten off my yarn now
[43:31] now [Music]
[43:39] then i'm going to take that loop that i
[43:40] then i'm going to take that loop that i just finished
[43:41] just finished and i'm just going to pull it all the
[43:43] and i'm just going to pull it all the way so it breaks it
[43:44] way so it breaks it insert my hook into the stitch
[43:47] insert my hook into the stitch that i join to
[43:49] that i join to grab my yarn and pull it through to the
[43:51] grab my yarn and pull it through to the back side
[43:53] back side then i'll turn my hat inside out
[44:16] this is my top ring
[44:22] i'm going to trim that
[44:25] because it's a little fluffy and uneven
[44:28] because it's a little fluffy and uneven and it doesn't want to thread
[44:40] all right so here's my center ring where

[44:59] and now this is the beginning
[45:05] and i'm just going to go
[45:07] and i'm just going to go a couple stitches over
[45:11] and i'm pulling and it's tightening up
[45:13] and i'm pulling and it's tightening up this ring now i want to secure it by
[45:15] this ring now i want to secure it by working my other passes i work three
[45:17] working my other passes i work three passes in total so that's one pass
[45:20] passes in total so that's one pass i'm going to insert into a nearby stitch
[45:22] i'm going to insert into a nearby stitch i'm not going to pick the whole stitch
[45:24] i'm not going to pick the whole stitch up
[45:25] up when i weave in my ends so i'm not
[45:28] when i weave in my ends so i'm not picking up the whole stitch when i work
[45:30] picking up the whole stitch when i work i'm going to insert my hook down the
[45:32] i'm going to insert my hook down the center of the stitch breaking it in half
[45:35] center of the stitch breaking it in half and then i'll
[45:38] have my needle run across several
[45:40] have my needle run across several stitches and when i come out
[45:42] stitches and when i come out i'm also going to break whatever stitch
[45:44] i'm also going to break whatever stitch i'm coming out of in half this is going
[45:46] i'm coming out of in half this is going to help catch my yarn
[45:50] and i do that every single time i never
[45:52] and i do that every single time i never pick up a full stitch i just go right
[45:54] pick up a full stitch i just go right down the center of it so it breaks it
[45:57] down the center of it so it breaks it and it helps catch my yarn
[46:07] there's three passes
[46:08] there's three passes if you're not comfortable you think it's
[46:10] if you're not comfortable you think it's still loose work another pass
[46:20] i'll go down here to where i fastened
[46:22] i'll go down here to where i fastened off
[46:29] and we don't want to work
[46:32] and we don't want to work horizontally
[46:33] horizontally that's going to limit the stretch of the
[46:35] that's going to limit the stretch of the beanie we don't want that at all we want
[46:38] beanie we don't want that at all we want it to fit comfortably so
[46:40] it to fit comfortably so we're going to work vertically
[46:48] just inserting in a nearby stitch
[46:53] and work up
[46:55] and work up several stitches
[46:57] several stitches you can see here where i've broken my
[47:00] you can see here where i've broken my my stitch
[47:21] three passes and i'm comfortable with
[47:24] three passes and i'm comfortable with that feels secure
[47:30] and this is where i had to join my new
[47:32] and this is where i had to join my new ball of yarn so when i weave these in
[47:34] ball of yarn so when i weave these in i'm also going to do it vertically
[47:36] i'm also going to do it vertically because horizontal will prohibit the
[47:39] because horizontal will prohibit the stretch we don't want to do that
[48:14] so
