[00:09] hey there everyone aj back again for the
[00:11] mighty gluestick channel i make videos
[00:13] about dungeons and dragons lore full
[00:14] time and have a collection
[00:16] of many videos on monster ecology
[00:19] fantasy world history
[00:20] cosmology character classes and magic
[00:22] items on my channel
[00:23] if you like what i do please consider
[00:25] becoming a member of the channel by
[00:26] clicking the join down button down below
[00:28] or backing me on patreon we can get
[00:30] access to all of the scripts
[00:31] i write for these vids if you prefer to
[00:33] read what i'm saying i have a discord
[00:35] server with an active community and of
[00:37] course subscribe to me here for
[00:38] two video uploads per week and a live
[00:41] stream every weekend
[00:43] for this video i'll be drawing directly
[00:45] on the second
[00:46] third and fourth edition draconomicons
[00:48] published in 1992
[00:50] 2003 in 2008 respectively
[00:53] with my own insights added here and
[00:55] there but this is predominantly directly
[00:58] from published law because there's a few
[01:00] things you may not have known about the
[01:02] subject of today's monster ecology video
[01:05] blue dragons also known as storm dragons
[01:08] are among the most vain and prideful of
[01:10] an already very arrogant
[01:12] species so it's fitting that i remaster
[01:15] their video on them first
[01:16] out of all the chromatic dragons anyway
[01:19] dedicated carnivores
[01:20] blue dragons prefer to eat large game
[01:23] depending on their chosen environment it
[01:24] might be
[01:25] camels horses lions and elephants or
[01:28] goats rothay sea lions and a variety of
[01:31] marine mammals
[01:32] even sharks with snacks of snakes and
[01:34] lizards iguanas and turtles
[01:36] perhaps the occasional cactus to floss
[01:39] these fangs
[01:40] those who tend herd animals best resign
[01:43] themselves to blue dragons taxing their
[01:45] livestock
[01:46] and in some desolate regions trade
[01:48] caravans certainly fit
[01:49] the blue dragon's menu in the absence of
[01:51] easier game
[01:53] but blues are not known to hunt
[01:54] humanoids unless they just happen to be
[01:56] the easiest
[01:57] meat on offer blues use their lightning
[02:00] breath weapon to partially cook
[02:02] a fresh kill before wolfing it down
[02:04] leaving nothing behind
[02:05] they don't eat as often as other dragons
[02:08] thanks to their habit of taking such
[02:10] large meals
[02:11] if they do take on a caravan they will
[02:13] eat the animals first
[02:14] interrogate the humanoids to see if they
[02:16] have extra hidden treasure
[02:18] within flying distance and then eat them
[02:20] too if they are so
[02:22] full that they could not eat another
[02:24] bite they will probably let the
[02:25] humoroids go not caring if it happens to
[02:27] be in the middle of a desert or a remote
[02:29] coast
[02:30] storm dragons enjoy lording and over
[02:32] wickling humanoids and other lesser
[02:34] creatures to prove
[02:35] that they can do so rather than out of
[02:37] any desire for results
[02:39] a blue dragon pays little attention to
[02:41] humanoid's feeble squeaky voices
[02:43] and might even forgive insults but any
[02:46] suggestion that the dragon has any
[02:48] weakness or
[02:48] inferiority and it will instantly murder
[02:51] the source
[02:52] blues are also extremely territorial
[02:54] they rarely give intruders even
[02:56] accidental ones the opportunity to
[02:58] explain themselves however
[03:00] they don't tend to set all manner of
[03:01] traps in their lair not usually they
[03:03] will instead use dominated or allied
[03:05] creatures to take
[03:06] care of intruders in person they spend a
[03:08] fair amount of their time in their lair
[03:10] sleeping off
[03:11] large meals but the rest of the time
[03:13] they take to the air
[03:15] and patrol their territory loving the
[03:17] sky as much as silver dragons
[03:19] they seek out and battle powerful
[03:20] enemies or other dragons who have
[03:22] violated what they consider to the
[03:24] borders of their domain
[03:25] combine this with the particular
[03:27] qualities that blue dragons prefer in
[03:29] their home turf
[03:30] and their tendency to battle other blue
[03:32] dragons bronze brown and dragon turtles
[03:35] becomes
[03:35] understandable as we'll discover soon
[03:38] they are formidable combatants
[03:40] particularly for bands of adventuring
[03:43] humanoids
[03:44] trying to vanquish one as blue dragons
[03:46] rarely land during combat
[03:48] preferring flight and far-reaching
[03:50] attacks to lumbering over the ground
[03:52] within close melee range
[03:54] because they like to fight from a
[03:55] distance blue dragons consider combat a
[03:57] long-term engagement
[03:59] they fly near enough to their opponents
[04:00] to unleash a few barrages
[04:02] then vanish and then return sometimes
[04:05] minutes or even
[04:06] hours later soaring up to the cloak
[04:08] themselves and clouds all the while
[04:10] keeping a very close watch
[04:11] for the next opportunity to dive out of
[04:13] the sky and unleash
[04:14] devastation on their victims on rare
[04:17] occasions when a blue dragon hunts from
[04:19] the ground or rests
[04:20] away from its lair it conceals itself
[04:22] beneath the terrain
[04:23] burrowing with powerful claws and stout
[04:26] muscular limbs
[04:27] because most stormy regions have soft
[04:29] ground such as the sand coastlines and
[04:32] deserts or the rich soil of forests
[04:35] rainforest in particular blue dragons
[04:36] find it easy to hide in this fashion
[04:38] many think that blue dragons are
[04:40] restricted to deserts or assume
[04:42] that they only prefer coastal regions
[04:44] but it's not the landscape
[04:45] that draws them to certain places it's
[04:47] the frequency of violent storms that
[04:49] they're after
[04:50] although coastal areas and seaside
[04:53] cliffs fit this description
[04:55] so too to certain tropical islands and
[04:57] mountainous highlands not terribly
[04:58] distant from the empowering sea
[05:00] if a blue dragon can't find a
[05:02] particularly stormy region in which to
[05:03] settle it can make do with whatever
[05:05] terrain is available as long as it has
[05:07] its own territory
[05:08] a blue dragon might locate its lair on a
[05:10] mountaintop or in the jungle
[05:12] in the underdark even or in the desert
[05:14] anywhere
[05:15] except perhaps the coldest arctic climbs
[05:18] but any blue living in a location that
[05:21] lacks frequent storms thinks of that
[05:23] location
[05:24] as temporary at best a camp if you will
[05:27] even if it ends up dwelling there for a
[05:28] few hundred years with an extensive lair
[05:30] it will shift to a better location in a
[05:32] heartbeat
[05:33] usually after slaying the dragon who
[05:35] formally laid claim to it
[05:38] ultimately a blue dragon finds happiness
[05:40] only in a place where it hears
[05:42] regular thunder beating on the horizon
[05:43] and where it can soar among clouds
[05:45] with the lightning many a sea captain
[05:48] has stories of the most spectacular
[05:50] storms close into treacherous dark rocky
[05:52] coasts
[05:53] graveyards of ocean-going vessels and as
[05:56] the black sky lights up with crackling
[05:58] lightning
[05:58] the sparkling outline of a blue dragon
[06:01] sweeps right over the ship's mast
[06:02] the great beast roaring at the sky as if
[06:05] to challenge it
[06:06] the scales of blue dragons are slightly
[06:08] more reflective than those of other
[06:09] chromatic dragons usually because
[06:11] they've been
[06:12] buffed a person could not use a blue
[06:15] dragon scales as mirrors but in blue or
[06:18] dark environments the scales take on the
[06:20] surrounding hue and blend into the sky
[06:22] or elements around them
[06:23] it's not so obvious when you're looking
[06:24] at them on land but quite amazing when
[06:27] they leap into the sky
[06:28] and your eyes just seem to lose track of
[06:30] them because its scales so closely match
[06:32] the surrounding sky a flying blue dragon
[06:35] can make stealth checks to hide from
[06:36] creatures on the ground
[06:37] or at lower altitude even it doesn't
[06:39] have overly
[06:41] obvious cover or concealment but given
[06:43] that they prefer environments where
[06:45] cloud
[06:45] cover is the norm even other dragons are
[06:48] wary of going toe to toe or rather
[06:50] wing to wing with a storm dragon in the
[06:52] sky
[06:54] the horns and brow ridge of a blue
[06:56] dragon funnel rain water and other
[06:58] precipitation away from the eyes
[07:00] when combined with the blue dragon's
[07:01] keen vision this feature enables the
[07:03] dragon to see better in inclement
[07:05] weather than most other creatures do
[07:07] a blue dragon ignores any cover or
[07:10] concealment granted by rain and other
[07:12] non-frozen precipitation
[07:13] the wings of blue dragons are more
[07:15] flexible than those of other chromatics
[07:17] blue dragons use their wings to steer
[07:19] and boost their speed
[07:20] like sailors tacking a ship close-up or
[07:23] in
[07:23] the lair where they've been resting for
[07:25] a while the smell of ozone is strong
[07:27] around them
[07:28] those who stand right next to one may
[07:30] see the hair almost stand on
[07:31] end on their heads due to the electrical
[07:33] charge they generate
[07:34] they're very blood containing tremendous
[07:36] elemental force
[07:38] the slightest wind outdoors can pull the
[07:40] odor away from them though still
[07:41] humans are pretty sensitive to that
[07:43] electrical discharge smell
[07:45] storm dragons are not prone to sneaking
[07:46] up on creatures on the ground though
[07:48] they prefer to pounce on them from above
[07:50] so smelling them coming is not really an
[07:52] option
[07:53] for their layers blue dragons favor
[07:54] enormous stone ruins or caves on the
[07:57] sides of cliffs
[07:58] or hills or mountains blues enjoy taking
[08:00] over structures built by other races as
[08:02] a sign of their dominance
[08:04] they make their lairs as lofty as
[08:06] possible to survey their domains from
[08:08] the heights
[08:08] as with most dragons their eyesight is
[08:10] incredible able to make out tiny details
[08:13] from miles away
[08:14] also the elevation makes them feel truly
[08:16] part of storms that roll through the
[08:18] area even if
[08:19] a blue dragon can't find or construct a
[08:22] layer at high altitude
[08:23] it will likely choose a layer in which
[08:25] it can easily access the main entrance
[08:27] only by flight
[08:28] would-be intruders on land thus must
[08:31] undertake difficult if not
[08:32] in nearly impossible climbs i favor
[08:35] attacking them with griffins and harpies
[08:37] while the adventurers cling to unstable
[08:39] rock faces personally
[08:41] i don't overlook how much fun a giant
[08:42] crab or two in a rock
[08:44] chasm is with a churning ocean below
[08:46] keep in mind it's really hard to swim
[08:49] while wearing metal armor storm dragons
[08:52] stock their lair with treasures that
[08:54] are as visually appealing as they are
[08:56] valuable blues love gems particularly
[08:58] sapphires and other blue stones
[09:00] they equally admire lovely works of art
[09:02] and jewelry they're famous for it
[09:04] although such an event is rare given
[09:06] blue's innate draconic greed blue
[09:09] dragons have been known to leave behind
[09:11] treasure they find
[09:11] unattractive feeling that the presence
[09:14] of such a treasure would
[09:15] sully the magnificent of their hordes
[09:18] thus
[09:19] the magnificence of the dragons
[09:20] themselves
[09:22] is reflected in their the magnificence
[09:24] of their treasures
[09:25] inside the lair the dragon's favored
[09:27] wrestling spot is a centre rule of a
[09:29] showcase of its fabulous wealth and
[09:31] accomplishments
[09:32] much like red dragons blues will have
[09:34] their minions typically kobolds craft
[09:36] great frescoes and stunning attractive
[09:38] mosaic tile murals
[09:40] depicting the dragon's exploits most of
[09:42] which are probably true
[09:43] although they tend to move into the
[09:45] terrain and layer of
[09:47] former dragons and might borrow some of
[09:49] their legends as their own
[09:51] blue dragons are quite aware of how
[09:54] flesh golems and helm horrors and such
[09:56] operate and will certainly include a few
[09:58] of them in their lair if possible
[09:59] flesh golems make ideal guardians of the
[10:02] dragon's horde
[10:03] as they can be quickly regenerated with
[10:05] the dragon's own
[10:06] lightning bolts so territorial
[10:09] dominant and arrogant yes but when other
[10:12] creatures give
[10:13] due respect to the storm dragon's pride
[10:15] and territorial claims
[10:16] they're actually one of the most
[10:18] reasonable of the chromatic dragon types
[10:20] some blue dragons live as peaceful
[10:22] neighbors of humanoid communities or
[10:24] even
[10:25] on occasion other dragon varieties
[10:27] they're not cruel they don't seek to
[10:29] claim any more territory than they can
[10:31] realistically defend or need
[10:33] and blues are wise enough to see the
[10:34] benefits of employing humanoids to
[10:36] perform
[10:36] tasks for them because blues enjoyed the
[10:40] opportunity to command others
[10:41] thus showing their superiority and the
[10:43] accomplishment of goals
[10:45] without having to exert themselves when
[10:47] you look at this objectively you can see
[10:49] that this is like a flip side of the
[10:50] silver dragon's admiration of the humans
[10:52] drive and ambition
[10:54] blues care nothing for human ambition
[10:56] other than as
[10:57] a tool to get the little creatures to do
[10:59] whatever that wants
[11:01] i often think of storm dragons as
[11:02] literal boss monsters
[11:04] they keep a retinue of allies and
[11:06] toadies on hand sending out
[11:07] forces employing ambitious and powerful
[11:10] arcanists who seek
[11:11] their own paths to power one upping and
[11:13] their arrivals by
[11:14] being on side with a storm dragon boss
[11:17] storm dragons
[11:18] have power and abundance when it comes
[11:21] to their attitude toward half dragons
[11:23] they only really show interest to those
[11:25] who are directly related to them
[11:26] they have very little respect for
[11:28] lifeforms that are not true dragons thus
[11:30] they would never consider a half dragon
[11:31] to even have the potential to be an
[11:33] equal to a real dragon
[11:35] they consider dragonborn to be the spawn
[11:37] of bahamut basically mutations
[11:39] but they respect the power of dragonborn
[11:41] to build a cohesive military force and
[11:43] master both arcane and divine magic
[11:46] arrogant and self-absorbed as blue
[11:48] dragons may be they are seldom very
[11:50] stupid
[11:50] and have a keen sense of tactics they
[11:53] might not respect individual dragonborn
[11:55] but they certainly respect the power of
[11:56] a legion of them
[11:58] unlike other chromatic dragons blues are
[12:00] quite lawful they have a society and a
[12:02] hierarchy even a leadership position
[12:04] among them
[12:05] in the greater regions they inhabit blue
[12:08] dragons
[12:08] are by their nature solitary creatures
[12:10] however blues do form into social
[12:13] organizations on a regular basis
[12:15] compared to other dragons while
[12:16] chromatics
[12:17] the oldest and most powerful blue dragon
[12:19] in a particular geographical region
[12:21] is known as the suzeraine and all
[12:24] dragons within that region pay it
[12:26] official homage the size of the region
[12:29] ruled by the suzerain
[12:31] varies depending on the dragon
[12:33] population or the region and the power
[12:35] of the suzerain
[12:36] obviously a millennia old cesarean worm
[12:38] can enforce fealty over a larger area
[12:41] and greater a number of dragons than
[12:42] could a younger individual
[12:44] while still evil and rapacious blue
[12:46] dragons are highly lawful
[12:48] particularly in dealings with the susa
[12:49] rain all blue dragons within that
[12:51] territory claimed by the suzerain have
[12:53] three choices
[12:54] in how they deal with this they can
[12:56] submit themselves to the cesareans of
[12:57] will and command
[12:59] which is the most usual case or they can
[13:01] simply leave the suzerain's territory
[13:03] easily moving into the sphere of
[13:04] influence of another sue's reign or
[13:06] hopefully one more accepting of them or
[13:08] finding an area where
[13:10] this is uh being claimed by noses right
[13:13] the third option is to challenge the
[13:14] suzerain to a death jewel
[13:16] hoping to become suzerain themselves
[13:18] death duels are highly
[13:20] structured events official challenges
[13:22] must be given and accepted
[13:23] the acceptance is compulsory however
[13:25] asus are in refusing to set
[13:27] accepted challenges considered by all
[13:28] other dragons to have conceded
[13:30] their authority the date and place of
[13:33] the deal
[13:34] are then set and communicated to all
[13:36] other blues in the territory and
[13:38] sometimes beyond it
[13:39] and in the case of suzeraisin with high
[13:41] profiles
[13:42] the dual site is often chosen to be a
[13:44] central location
[13:45] even outside the suzerain's official
[13:47] territory the higher moore region is
[13:49] often selected
[13:50] as it's just perfect for the sort of
[13:52] combat dragons from all over the realms
[13:55] will attend a duel like this a duel is a
[13:58] red letter day for dragons and few
[14:00] nearby blues failed to attend the
[14:01] spectacle
[14:02] a blue uh jewel day is not a good time
[14:05] to stumble into the blue dragons
[14:06] territory
[14:07] for sure such close proximity with
[14:10] others of the equine isn't an easy thing
[14:12] for solitary dragons to bear and
[14:14] tempers often reach a hair trigger state
[14:16] not to mention the
[14:17] devastating effect it has on large
[14:19] animals in that region
[14:20] the position of susrain is largely
[14:23] ceremonial
[14:24] while the cesarean officially has the
[14:26] authority of life and death over dragons
[14:27] within its territory
[14:28] this authority is almost never used
[14:31] about the only official duty that
[14:32] associated has to perform is that
[14:34] of authorizing or denying petitions from
[14:36] dragons who wish to mate
[14:38] of course should the entire territory be
[14:41] threatened
[14:41] the cesarean can become the official
[14:43] commander-in-chief of a horde of blue
[14:45] dragons
[14:46] who will follow their orders without
[14:48] question for the most part
[14:50] red dragons may be the most famous for
[14:52] the historic flights of hundreds of
[14:53] dragons who scorched the whole
[14:54] civilization
[14:56] of the ancient area coqura to the ground
[14:58] but blues can mount
[15:00] an actual military force with a chain of
[15:02] command which is
[15:04] quite something for blue dragons mating
[15:06] is an important matter constrained by
[15:09] social norms
[15:10] as well as officially asking the
[15:11] suzerain for permission
[15:13] the prospective mates must also swear an
[15:15] oath to remain together until the
[15:16] offspring of the union reached the age
[15:18] of 26
[15:19] which is much younger than metallic
[15:21] dragon juveniles but they tend to stay
[15:23] reasonably close to the lair for a while
[15:24] longer
[15:25] looking after themselves much like
[15:26] bronze dragons but more on that in a
[15:28] moment
[15:29] storm dragon eggs incubate for
[15:31] approximately 22 months
[15:33] the last 15 in the nest and they
[15:36] uh with an average clutch of between two
[15:39] and four
[15:40] and most eggs hatch into healthy
[15:42] wormlinks
[15:43] blue dragons grow from wormlings into
[15:45] the youth after about
[15:46] seven years they then become adults
[15:49] around the age 160
[15:51] and elders after about a thousand years
[15:54] they become ancient at about
[15:56] 1800 and the oldest known blue dragon
[15:58] died
[15:59] at approximately oh actually i think
[16:02] it's got it listed at 2 300 years but i
[16:04] think we've got an example of one that
[16:06] lived 3 000
[16:07] years but i think that was through
[16:09] unusual means a blue dragon that
[16:10] undergoes environmental diffusion
[16:13] uh which means that they're in their
[16:16] elemental spirit essentially merges
[16:19] force-like with the uh the world around
[16:22] them and it creates a permanent storm in
[16:24] the vicinity
[16:25] this event happens even underground
[16:27] through
[16:28] the cramped conditions might slacken the
[16:30] strength of the winds
[16:32] although the severity of the wind and
[16:33] rain rises and falls ranging from gentle
[16:35] gusts and mild showers to hurricane
[16:37] forced torrents
[16:38] the storm never dissipates entirely
[16:40] regardless of the prevailing weather
[16:42] and conditions outside of it so it could
[16:44] actually be tapped into by any
[16:46] processing wizard
[16:47] or druid or some such as they age the
[16:50] blue dragon wyrmlings stick to the
[16:51] safety of small caves and hillsides
[16:53] cliff faces or mountain walls sometimes
[16:55] they hunt from the top
[16:56] ancient stone ruins they enjoy the
[16:58] safety of high places and they
[17:00] instinctively love
[17:01] violent weather just as their older blue
[17:03] dragons do
[17:05] storm dragon wormlings that live in
[17:07] seaside cliffs are exposed to tempests
[17:09] and some are killed in the wrath
[17:10] of particularly powerful storms but not
[17:13] many and those that survive such
[17:14] punishment are considered
[17:16] the true heirs of dragonkind
[17:19] the wyrmling's brow horn is a good size
[17:21] from the moment it hatches but otherwise
[17:23] its face is clear of other growths and
[17:25] its chin
[17:26] sports a cluster of elongated scales
[17:28] that resemble a beard and its ears are
[17:30] large frills
[17:31] more oceanic than atmospheric thick
[17:34] spines form
[17:35] a sort of a mane along the relatively
[17:37] short neck
[17:38] it scales a sky blue with a scattering
[17:40] of dark indigo's patches
[17:43] for a great example of a blue dragon in
[17:45] the forgotten realms i can't go past
[17:47] well there's a few actually
[17:48] i can't go past irelathagra who thanks
[17:51] to her oversized
[17:53] teeth is known as sharp fangs she is
[17:55] known across the lands of intrigue the
[17:57] anaroc desert calimshan and all the
[17:59] northern feyren
[18:01] and the marching mountains and her
[18:03] current age
[18:04] is 1347 years old
[18:07] making her a great worm who has plagued
[18:10] the lands of arm and kalimshan and
[18:12] tethyr for many centuries she is the
[18:14] perfect example of a storm dragon in her
[18:16] prime with a fearsome reputation based
[18:18] on her habit
[18:19] of dishing out uh disproportionate
[18:22] retaliation
[18:23] to any slight against her which has
[18:24] deterred countless photos from
[18:27] making any move against her the cost if
[18:29] they fail is simply too high
[18:31] to seriously consider it as a result of
[18:33] that and her cunning and patient nature
[18:35] she has amassed a wealth rumored to be
[18:37] one of the largest
[18:38] dragon hordes in feyron she has looted
[18:42] from
[18:42] wizards realms religious orders and many
[18:46] many other dragons over a millennium
[18:49] it's not the cart loads of coins and
[18:51] gems that make it so impressive though
[18:53] although that is certainly impressive
[18:54] it's the precious works of art and
[18:56] fabulous magic items that make it so
[18:58] jaw-dropping her horde contains the eyes
[19:02] of neral
[19:03] the morning stone of every tian the
[19:06] fabulous
[19:06] the bryson lin's tears the bronze

[19:31] from an underwater kingdom
[19:32] the demon shield called corral tr
[19:35] the the master ring of varmal v the
[19:38] monocle
[19:38] of bag fellows the staff of shoon
[19:42] she doesn't use all these amazing magic
[19:44] items and such she just
[19:45] hoards them and enjoys being the envy of
[19:47] every other dragon in the world
[19:49] she's also the mother of uh araugathos
[19:53] the blue dragon once imprisoned by
[19:54] halaster blackhawk within the infamous
[19:57] undermountain mega dungeon
[19:58] this may or may not have something to do
[20:00] with her looting halaster's abandoned
[20:02] tower
[20:02] in 150 dr when she was still just a
[20:05] wormlink
[20:06] she is most famous for battling the
[20:09] emperor shoon the seventh
[20:10] in three major battles between 322
[20:15] and 366 dr the last of which resulted in
[20:19] 75 000 bystanders dead
[20:22] and destroyed tunes right leg and left
[20:24] arm
[20:26] and which he used as an excuse to become
[20:28] a lich but anyway
[20:29] that also resulted her wings being
[20:31] shredded for times
[20:33] still for many years after shun's
[20:35] successes paid sharp fangs
[20:37] a hefty tribute rather than risk her
[20:39] attacking again
[20:40] the last recorded incidents of which
[20:42] there have been
[20:43] many was in kalumshan in
[20:47] 1373 dr where she managed to raise
[20:50] the plaza of divine truth destroying an
[20:52] idol of bel ross
[20:54] which is their name for telos the god
[20:57] tellers
[20:58] which summoned a divine aspect of talos
[21:00] the storm lord
[21:01] riding a brass dragon and the two
[21:03] dragons fought
[21:04] destroying a fair bit of the city before
[21:06] shark fangs
[21:07] was driven off not destroyed once more
[21:10] returning to her hidden lair somewhere
[21:12] in the small teeth mountain range
[21:14] between arm
[21:14] and tithia she's no doubt sleeping as

[21:19] away among her fabulous treasures
