[03:06] Then we mix just a little bit of that and that.
[03:08] Mix just a little bit of that and that. That's weird.
[03:10] Yeah, nice. That sounds great. That sounds great.
[03:13] Nice. That sounds great. That sounds great. Um, so one of the first questions we've...
[03:16] Um, so one of the first questions we've always been asking people...
[03:17] Always been asking people, okay? Is that you have had a couple of...
[03:20] Okay, is that you have had a couple of different...
[03:21] Different first days at Berkeley. You've been a...
[03:23] Student, and you've been a faculty member. So...
[03:24] And you've been a faculty member. So, could you pick one of those...
[03:26] Could you pick one of those first days and tell us about it? You...
[03:27] First days and tell us about it. You could tell us about both as well, but...
[03:30] Could tell us about both as well, but what was it like for you on your first...
[03:32] What was it like for you on your first day of Berkeley?
[03:33] Day of Berkeley. Well, you know, real first days, really...
[03:35] Well, you know, real first days, really, when, when I arrived at Boston and the...
[03:37] When, when I arrived at Boston and the next day...
[03:39] Next day, um, my roommate or I was just to stay...
[03:40] Um, my roommate or I was just to stay with...
[03:44] With, you know, brought me to, um, Berkeley...
[03:44] You know, brought me to, um, Berkeley by car. And first thing I go into the 150...
[03:47] By car. And first thing I go into the 150 myself...
[03:52] Myself. Going downstairs, I got lost right away.
[03:53] Going downstairs, I got lost right away. That's almost like, what's going on?
[03:57] Like, that's almost like what's going on? Like, I'm almost like...
[04:00] I'm almost like, really not, you know, able to find...
[04:00] Really not, you know, able to find anywhere. Then I ended up...
[04:04] anywhere then i ended up i go to laundry room or something really
[04:06] i go to laundry room or something really hot you know that was the first day
[04:08] hot you know that was the first day really
[04:08] really and then yeah that's first day really go
[04:11] and then yeah that's first day really go around i can see the ensemble you know
[04:13] around i can see the ensemble you know um
[04:14] um and so i have a really bad sense of
[04:16] and so i have a really bad sense of direction
[04:17] direction and being in a 150 myself first thing i
[04:19] and being in a 150 myself first thing i was finding a class was really difficult
[04:23] was finding a class was really difficult and i yeah and remember first class was
[04:25] and i yeah and remember first class was arranging one
[04:26] arranging one by brian lewis and he's a very nice guy
[04:30] by brian lewis and he's a very nice guy he talks
[04:31] he talks everything you know detail i have no
[04:34] everything you know detail i have no idea what he's talking about
[04:37] idea what he's talking about because i didn't realize my english
[04:39] because i didn't realize my english skills are really horrible
[04:41] skills are really horrible in other words i can read i can read but
[04:43] in other words i can read i can read but my listening skill is like
[04:45] my listening skill is like wow everybody talks so fast and
[04:48] wow everybody talks so fast and everybody has a boston accent a little
[04:49] everybody has a boston accent a little bit right so i was like wow
[04:51] bit right so i was like wow what's that you know yeah so like a
[04:53] what's that you know yeah so like a language problem was my first like
[04:56] language problem was my first like you know major problem at the berkeley i
[04:58] you know major problem at the berkeley i was like wow how
[04:59] was like wow how how can i um overcome this you know so
[05:03] how can i um overcome this you know so that was hard yeah i i even missed
[05:06] that was hard yeah i i even missed i even missed the you know midterm
[05:08] i even missed the you know midterm because i didn't know when when was the
[05:09] because i didn't know when when was the midterm
[05:11] midterm wow you know tomo can you find your way
[05:14] wow you know tomo can you find your way around the one filled
[05:15] around the one filled 50 building now because i still get lost
[05:17] 50 building now because i still get lost in the world
[05:19] in the world yeah now actually now they changed a
[05:21] yeah now actually now they changed a little bit
[05:22] little bit so yeah i don't know exactly what i i
[05:25] so yeah i don't know exactly what i i have to go around a little bit yeah
[05:28] have to go around a little bit yeah yeah i think that's one thing is that
[05:30] yeah i think that's one thing is that nobody understands that when they first
[05:31] nobody understands that when they first come you like you may never
[05:32] come you like you may never know how to get through yeah most
[05:35] know how to get through yeah most buildings go straight
[05:37] buildings go straight up you know go this way that way but
[05:39] up you know go this way that way but that's like almost like
[05:40] that's like almost like every angle like in almost like a two
[05:42] every angle like in almost like a two different stairs in
[05:43] different stairs in ensemble rooms especially yeah how are
[05:45] ensemble rooms especially yeah how are you going to find an ensemble room you
[05:47] you going to find an ensemble room you know how to explain to go to where you
[05:49] know how to explain to go to where you know
[05:51] omo that's you know that was so brave of
[05:54] omo that's you know that was so brave of you
[05:54] you to come from japan to berkeley
[05:58] to come from japan to berkeley you were so excited obviously yeah
[06:01] you were so excited obviously yeah but uh to berkeley and and just
[06:05] but uh to berkeley and and just i mean that's such a commitment i'm
[06:07] I mean that's such a commitment I'm always admire.
[06:08] Always admire um international students that come.
[06:11] Um international students that come particularly if.
[06:12] Particularly if they're so excited and they their.
[06:13] They're so excited and they their English might be.
[06:15] English might be yeah really and I just think wow I don't.
[06:18] Yeah really and I just think wow I don't know if I could do that myself I'm.
[06:20] Not brave enough I said I see well it's.
[06:22] Not brave enough I said I see well it's I think.
[06:23] I think music brought us all together and taught.
[06:26] Music brought us all together and taught Berkeley and that's kind of first.
[06:27] Berkeley and that's kind of first passion.
[06:28] Passion and then after that anything any problem.
[06:31] And then after that anything any problem just fine.
[06:32] Just fine just so you have to just you know do it.
[06:34] Just so you have to just you know do it you know so that's.
[06:35] You know so that's that kind of a attitude I had but also.
[06:38] That kind of a attitude I had but also I want a lot of people to know that.
[06:42] Once I gave up my guitar gave up playing.
[06:47] Once I gave up my guitar gave up playing and a lot of people don't know just.
[06:49] And a lot of people don't know just because.
[06:50] Because um you know I don't tell much about what.
[06:53] Um you know I don't tell much about what happened was like you know uh just like.
[06:55] Happened was like you know teenager.
[06:57] Everybody you know teenager you know play rock music and all that.
[06:59] You know play rock music and all that and then you find.
[07:00] And then you find you know your favorite guitar player.
[07:03] You know your favorite guitar player being a band you play.
[07:05] Being a band you play so up till age 16.
[07:08] so up till age 16 17 i was just like wow i want to do this
[07:12] 17 i was just like wow i want to do this then then parents teacher everybody
[07:16] then then parents teacher everybody talking about college and then
[07:19] talking about college and then i started hearing things like music is
[07:22] i started hearing things like music is not so
[07:22] not so great choice to have your career just
[07:25] great choice to have your career just because no guarantee
[07:28] because no guarantee and my mother said that too then uh i
[07:31] and my mother said that too then uh i you know i was talking to my
[07:32] you know i was talking to my teacher and i uh i didn't have enough
[07:35] teacher and i uh i didn't have enough um like confidence about the plan
[07:39] um like confidence about the plan so i thought okay my my idea was like
[07:42] so i thought okay my my idea was like this i go to regular college
[07:44] this i go to regular college please my parents maybe two years i go
[07:47] please my parents maybe two years i go to berkeley
[07:48] to berkeley you know just two years to enjoy my
[07:51] you know just two years to enjoy my american life my dream
[07:53] american life my dream two years and that was my dream so
[07:55] two years and that was my dream so basically
[07:56] basically 17 to 18 two years
[07:59] 17 to 18 two years i didn't touch my guitar at all wow i
[08:02] i didn't touch my guitar at all wow i just did all about the studying
[08:04] just did all about the studying studying you know for college
[08:07] studying you know for college so like really study i study like almost
[08:10] so like really study i study like almost like i get up
[08:11] like i get up every day summer i get up 5 a.m i study
[08:14] every day summer i get up 5 a.m i study from 6 00 a.m
[08:16] from 6 00 a.m to noon six hours and then
[08:19] to noon six hours and then take a break and then 2 p.m to you know
[08:22] take a break and then 2 p.m to you know 6
[08:22] 6 7 so that's 12 hours a day the reason is
[08:25] 7 so that's 12 hours a day the reason is one of my teachers
[08:27] one of my teachers at the high school the guy says if you
[08:30] at the high school the guy says if you study
[08:31] study six hours up to noon and then six hours
[08:35] six hours up to noon and then six hours afternoon still have a free time
[08:39] this is funny after the summer i so
[08:41] this is funny after the summer i so excited i
[08:42] excited i i talked to this guy i did this and he
[08:45] i talked to this guy i did this and he goes like
[08:46] goes like whoa that was just expression i didn't
[08:50] whoa that was just expression i didn't really meant to say that's really
[08:52] really meant to say that's really reality that's easy
[08:54] reality that's easy okay wow what topics were you studying
[08:59] okay wow what topics were you studying english actually studying english like
[09:02] english actually studying english like you know about the reading you know
[09:03] you know about the reading you know reading
[09:03] reading right yeah so the english history
[09:07] right yeah so the english history math you know yeah because that's the
[09:10] math you know yeah because that's the one
[09:11] one it's really important you know history
[09:13] it's really important you know history math and english you know that's
[09:14] math and english you know that's i study and then i went to like you know
[09:18] i study and then i went to like you know like kind of a school that to teach
[09:20] like kind of a school that to teach these like you know high
[09:22] these like you know high level course you know so and i didn't
[09:24] level course you know so and i didn't study
[09:25] study um when i was a junior high school i was
[09:28] um when i was a junior high school i was really bad but in high school
[09:31] really bad but in high school i had a really great teacher really
[09:32] i had a really great teacher really helpful i had a little bit of
[09:34] helpful i had a little bit of anxiety problem you know just always you
[09:36] anxiety problem you know just always you know a little bit feel
[09:38] know a little bit feel now now really um you know great so
[09:42] now now really um you know great so this english teacher very kind
[09:45] this english teacher very kind he really understand my anxiety problem
[09:48] he really understand my anxiety problem back in the 80s people don't know about
[09:50] back in the 80s people don't know about anxiety back then
[09:52] anxiety back then he really understood that then he just
[09:53] he really understood that then he just really put me inside
[09:55] really put me inside don't worry don't worry you know i will
[09:57] don't worry don't worry you know i will help you so he really helped me
[09:59] help you so he really helped me like you know you know then he
[10:01] like you know you know then he encouraged me says
[10:02] encouraged me says if you study this if you get this you
[10:04] if you study this if you get this you get scholarship
[10:06] get scholarship oh and i did that and i got only
[10:09] oh and i did that and i got only two guy from the high school got
[10:11] two guy from the high school got scholarship so i got second year scholarship
[10:13] so i got second year i got full scholarship from high school
[10:16] i got full scholarship from high school you know
[10:17] you know and then so this guy really helped me so
[10:19] and then so this guy really helped me so almost like us
[10:20] almost like us gradually i'm start gaining confidence
[10:23] gradually i'm start gaining confidence in different direction
[10:24] in different direction not the guitar from different source you
[10:27] not the guitar from different source you know
[10:27] know so now i think that teacher helped me
[10:31] so now i think that teacher helped me my confidence level you know get out
[10:34] my confidence level you know get out from
[10:35] from you know anxiety attack right
[10:38] you know anxiety attack right and then two years i believe these
[10:40] and then two years i believe these teachers to study
[10:42] teachers to study so i went to college and i don't know
[10:45] so i went to college and i don't know why
[10:46] why i i chose uh russian to study at the
[10:49] i i chose uh russian to study at the college
[10:49] college wow the reason is i i really figured out
[10:53] wow the reason is i i really figured out how to make good money quickly
[10:57] how to make good money quickly so back then my research was telling me
[11:00] so back then my research was telling me if i study russian and if i do
[11:03] if i study russian and if i do um you know business
[11:07] um you know business you know stock market and all that stuff
[11:09] you know stock market and all that stuff right some russian
[11:10] right some russian and then that was good pay right away so
[11:13] and then that was good pay right away so that was that was my my goal study russian get a great job
[11:17] my my goal study russian get a great job i play guitar all day oh i mean all weekend
[11:19] weekend that was my idea in reality
[11:23] that was my idea in reality i study at the you know college russia
[11:26] i study at the you know college russia means means you know seven eight courses russian and
[11:30] you know seven eight courses russian and everything written in english so i was like
[11:33] everything written in english so i was like okay understand english to understand russian
[11:37] okay understand english to understand russian russian then understand the japanese man that's a lot of work you know
[11:42] a lot of work you know and then but i did and i hate it
[11:45] and then but i did and i hate it then i put the band together funkman for you know
[11:49] you know my mind i kept playing and what happened was about a year at the college i hate it but just skip continue
[11:57] skip continue then i found the person who just got the scholarship from berkeley
[12:01] berkeley a guy named koichi osamu he's a bass player
[12:05] a guy named koichi osamu he's a bass player and he went to really great school kyoto kyoto university
[12:13] kyoto university and i found him because a small town
[12:17] and i found him because a small town and he hated me because i asked too much
[12:20] and he hated me because i asked too much question
[12:23] because i go next to him um i i heard
[12:27] because i go next to him um i i heard you uh got a scholarship and uh i'm
[12:29] you uh got a scholarship and uh i'm interested in berkeley
[12:30] interested in berkeley you go like practicing you know like you
[12:33] you go like practicing you know like you know apply-based practicing he didn't
[12:35] know apply-based practicing he didn't smile practicing
[12:36] smile practicing and i just i keep asking questions
[12:39] and i just i keep asking questions he gave up he started telling me all the
[12:43] he gave up he started telling me all the you know what he done and then every
[12:47] you know what he done and then every step i follow
[12:49] step i follow and about a half maybe six months later
[12:53] and about a half maybe six months later he went to berkeley that
[12:54] he went to berkeley that was 82 i think 82 83
[12:59] was 82 i think 82 83 and then this is funny too i still ask a
[13:02] and then this is funny too i still ask a question
[13:03] question in letter sending the letter to boston
[13:08] in letter sending the letter to boston then he answered a question but then
[13:11] then he answered a question but then i forgot to ask one more question that
[13:14] i forgot to ask one more question that takes about two weeks more
[13:16] takes about two weeks more you know that's so so that's why like
[13:19] you know that's so so that's why like you know i you know i tell people you know people email me
[13:21] tell people you know people email me asking did you get the email
[13:23] asking did you get the email well you have to wait two weeks you know
[13:26] well you have to wait two weeks you know because that's how it is
[13:27] because that's how it is that's what i did so you have to work on your patients
[13:32] your patients wow so then from there you had the courage to audition to berkeley or
[13:38] courage to audition to berkeley or yes then yeah so convincing people to support that or did you do it
[13:44] people to support that or did you do it quietly
[13:45] quietly actually kind of secretly secretly i stopped working on it i didn't tell my parents
[13:52] and then um then that time i start taking jazz guitarism
[13:57] just because berkeley is just a school i have to have a jazz
[13:59] so i kind of know a little bit about you know chord changes but
[14:04] i still play kind of pentatonic or whatever the field i play
[14:08] i didn't know two five lines i didn't know theory so i found the guitar teacher named takeshi yamaguchi
[14:14] teacher named takeshi yamaguchi in japan kyoto so he teaches very very strict you know um like
[14:20] strict you know um like good way you know so uh so i took his group lesson.
[14:23] full lesson last last you know last week of the month.
[14:28] always said he said don't bring a guitar then i have to write all the notes he explained dorian scale for that.
[14:36] three plus what i mean what's that you know like you know degrees and all that.
[14:40] so first thing i mean i still remember first lesson come in.
[14:43] he plays what is this what you know like what what degree oh um plus seven okay like that you know.
[14:52] what is 13 maybe you know i don't know okay good and um i take you kind of do you know.
[15:01] then after that you know he talked interval all the mores you know everything.
[15:06] so here's the funny part is transcription he teach me transcription every detail what strings what finger what picking if i miss one class.
[15:17] three days later i have a letter music all written.
[15:21] all written fingering strings picking everything
[15:24] fingering strings picking everything also you can't miss once a year in this
[15:27] also you can't miss once a year in this program you know
[15:28] program you know right so he taught me how to play jazz
[15:31] right so he taught me how to play jazz guitar
[15:32] guitar and then um a lot of story around it but
[15:34] and then um a lot of story around it but my karate teacher
[15:36] my karate teacher i found out that he loves jazz guitar he
[15:39] i found out that he loves jazz guitar he loves
[15:39] loves bunny you know bernie cassell kenny
[15:41] bunny you know bernie cassell kenny barrell he's the one
[15:43] barrell he's the one again secretly helping me
[15:46] again secretly helping me to do this like to get the teacher get
[15:49] to do this like to get the teacher get this idea you know
[15:51] this idea you know then about one year
[15:54] then about one year actually less than one year i really
[15:56] actually less than one year i really worked hard and i sent my demo tape
[15:58] worked hard and i sent my demo tape and at the same time i studied english
[16:00] and at the same time i studied english too
[16:01] too i went to english school and i made a
[16:04] i went to english school and i made a friends an english teacher
[16:05] friends an english teacher so then we become friends so i didn't
[16:07] so then we become friends so i didn't have to pay for the english you know
[16:09] have to pay for the english you know we kind of teach it you know and then i
[16:12] we kind of teach it you know and then i send a demo tape to berkeley
[16:14] send a demo tape to berkeley and i i got scholarship
[16:19] and this is back in um
[16:22] and this is back in um 84 1984.
[16:25] 84 1984. i got a scholarship from berkeley uh
[16:28] i got a scholarship from berkeley uh 2500
[16:30] 2500 i think from berkeley and then i forgot
[16:33] i think from berkeley and then i forgot how many
[16:34] how many yeah something like you know 2500 from
[16:37] yeah something like you know 2500 from berkeley
[16:37] berkeley two it is a twenty twenty five hundred
[16:40] two it is a twenty twenty five hundred then two thousand from
[16:41] then two thousand from something between japanese japanese and
[16:44] something between japanese japanese and japan and berkeley something like
[16:45] japan and berkeley something like that and i have a two hundred dollars
[16:48] that and i have a two hundred dollars about columbia just
[16:50] about columbia just this is kind of funny too you know i got
[16:51] this is kind of funny too you know i got the old just so john about colombia i
[16:53] the old just so john about colombia i have no idea who is john ababa
[16:55] have no idea who is john ababa back then yeah but then i got a
[16:58] scholarship and then back then one semester was 2000
[16:59] scholarship and then back then one semester was 2000 or 1700 1750 i think
[17:03] or 1700 1750 i think yeah wow so i thought okay i can do it
[17:07] yeah wow so i thought okay i can do it and then scholarship was
[17:10] and then scholarship was available within two years so i decided
[17:13] available within two years so i decided 84 to 86 i work to get my living
[17:17] 84 to 86 i work to get my living expenses
[17:22] expenses wow so once i got discussed i said
[17:26] wow so once i got discussed i said i can schedule my mother my father i
[17:28] i can schedule my mother my father i sorry i quit
[17:30] sorry i quit ah yeah then he said they said okay
[17:33] ah yeah then he said they said okay wow i mean so you were studying at one
[17:36] wow i mean so you were studying at one point there
[17:37] point there russian in college yes and other
[17:40] russian in college yes and other subjects yes then you were studying
[17:43] subjects yes then you were studying english separately
[17:44] english separately to get ready to come to the united
[17:45] to get ready to come to the united states you're studying karate
[17:47] states you're studying karate right and you were practicing jazz
[17:49] right and you were practicing jazz guitar and funk guitar and you had a
[17:51] guitar and funk guitar and you had a band
[17:52] band yeah so that's a tremendous work ethic
[17:55] yeah so that's a tremendous work ethic for a young person and then you had your
[17:59] for a young person and then you had your goal
[17:59] goal set up in in in public you had one
[18:02] set up in in in public you had one pursuit
[18:03] pursuit of an undergraduate degree then in
[18:05] of an undergraduate degree then in secret you had another pursuit of this
[18:07] secret you had another pursuit of this audition and then once you
[18:08] audition and then once you achieved that goal of getting the
[18:10] achieved that goal of getting the scholarship then you had a plan
[18:12] scholarship then you had a plan for the finances yeah that's right yeah
[18:15] for the finances yeah that's right yeah and so
[18:16] and so that's a tremendous work ethic that you
[18:19] that's a tremendous work ethic that you developed
[18:20] developed i did yeah and yeah how you know do you
[18:23] i did yeah and yeah how you know do you think
[18:24] think obviously that is something that
[18:26] obviously that is something that translates in every part of your life
[18:28] translates in every part of your life and so when you came to berkeley and you
[18:30] and so when you came to berkeley and you were a music student and then
[18:33] were a music student and then when you went into these parts of your
[18:35] when you went into these parts of your career yeah
[18:36] career yeah this obviously is something you took
[18:37] this obviously is something you took with you and continued to develop like
[18:39] with you and continued to develop like that kind of
[18:40] that kind of right yeah i oh i think all i always
[18:43] right yeah i oh i think all i always think
[18:44] think i'm good at it how to pacing my time
[18:47] i'm good at it how to pacing my time planning planning you know yeah almost a
[18:50] planning planning you know yeah almost a planner yeah
[18:51] planner yeah but the reason is up till
[18:55] but the reason is up till up till i was 13 i had
[18:58] up till i was 13 i had i have no desire anything i don't i
[19:01] i have no desire anything i don't i don't like sports i don't like
[19:03] don't like sports i don't like i don't really like any music yet you
[19:06] i don't really like any music yet you know so
[19:06] know so i was just almost like uh almost like uh
[19:11] i was just almost like uh almost like uh it's really funny to explain almost no
[19:14] it's really funny to explain almost no desire
[19:15] desire and no direction it just almost a bubble
[19:18] and no direction it just almost a bubble it's just kind of
[19:19] it's just kind of floating not doing anything and i
[19:22] floating not doing anything and i i didn't like myself about being there
[19:25] i didn't like myself about being there because some people really enjoy sports
[19:27] because some people really enjoy sports but i just don't
[19:29] but i just don't like sports you know so i just don't i
[19:32] like sports you know so i just don't i try to you know
[19:33] try to you know basketball the baseball but i'm not good
[19:35] basketball the baseball but i'm not good at whis ball you know so i
[19:37] at whis ball you know so i so everybody in japan does everything
[19:39] so everybody in japan does everything kind of one way
[19:40] kind of one way and then they respect it that way if i
[19:42] and then they respect it that way if i don't do it they they
[19:44] don't do it they they did kind of a you know put you know kind
[19:47] did kind of a you know put you know kind of wrong spot
[19:49] of wrong spot you know i mean actually i had a little
[19:51] you know i mean actually i had a little bit of when i was elementary school i
[19:53] bit of when i was elementary school i had a little bit um
[19:55] had a little bit um like bully kind of thing people didn't
[19:57] like bully kind of thing people didn't like me because i don't really fit in
[19:59] like me because i don't really fit in the
[20:00] the group right and i had a hard time with
[20:03] group right and i had a hard time with that
[20:04] that yeah and then express myself music and
[20:07] yeah and then express myself music and that's that's not a real good thing
[20:09] that's that's not a real good thing back in the early 80s you know
[20:11] back in the early 80s you know especially
[20:13] especially um elementary school high school
[20:15] um elementary school high school everybody wanted to do it
[20:16] everybody wanted to do it same thing okay yeah so that was kind of
[20:19] same thing okay yeah so that was kind of hard time you know
[20:20] hard time you know but then then once i found the guitar
[20:23] but then then once i found the guitar i really like this
[20:26] i really like this i really like this almost like i just
[20:29] i really like this almost like i just want to always go back to listen to
[20:31] want to always go back to listen to records or playing
[20:33] records or playing i still remember my mother said hey it's
[20:35] i still remember my mother said hey it's dinner it's a dinner
[20:37] dinner it's a dinner wait wait wait you know i have to get
[20:39] wait wait wait you know i have to get this voicemail sorry you know before i
[20:41] this voicemail sorry you know before i get to dinner you know
[20:42] get to dinner you know and after the dinner he really quick you
[20:45] and after the dinner he really quick you know to go back again listen again like
[20:47] know to go back again listen again like that
[20:47] that just every day is more like you know
[20:51] just every day is more like you know it's a good expression one of my high
[20:53] it's a good expression one of my high school student
[20:55] school student um said it okay uh
[20:58] um said it okay uh what happened is i had one really great
[21:01] what happened is i had one really great you know stu
[21:02] you know stu you know friends of high school and he
[21:03] you know friends of high school and he plays guitar as a hobby but i was really
[21:06] plays guitar as a hobby but i was really getting more
[21:07] getting more you know into it and then i got a um
[21:11] you know into it and then i got a um i i got into you know college with
[21:14] i i got into you know college with russian but then this you know my friend
[21:16] russian but then this you know my friend he
[21:17] he he didn't get in the college so
[21:18] he didn't get in the college so basically
[21:20] basically one year he's you know stayed
[21:23] one year he's you know stayed just you know studying to get to the
[21:25] just you know studying to get to the place he wanted to be
[21:26] place he wanted to be so we always hang out the weekend and um
[21:31] so we always hang out the weekend and um he said um you work like a soldier
[21:35] he said um you work like a soldier that's he always said he's just work
[21:38] that's he always said he's just work like a soldier just so you just do it
[21:40] like a soldier just so you just do it just almost no i mean
[21:42] just almost no i mean not the known feeling but just almost no
[21:44] not the known feeling but just almost no no no hesitation to do it
[21:46] no no hesitation to do it he always says amazing you can do that
[21:51] he always says amazing you can do that you feel like you still do it right i
[21:54] you feel like you still do it right i still do yeah
[21:56] still do yeah yeah and i actually i i calm down a
[21:58] yeah and i actually i i calm down a little bit
[22:01] yeah well you know hand in hand with
[22:05] yeah well you know hand in hand with that
[22:05] that um what came up for me is you talked
[22:08] um what came up for me is you talked about a teacher that you had that was
[22:09] about a teacher that you had that was really compassionate with you
[22:11] really compassionate with you yes i feel like
[22:15] yes i feel like the students know you in two ways they
[22:17] the students know you in two ways they know you for for
[22:18] know you for for being just just like a joyful like
[22:22] being just just like a joyful like constant practicer you know
[22:23] constant practicer you know you're constantly inspiring them to keep
[22:26] you're constantly inspiring them to keep practicing and you are always
[22:28] practicing and you are always learning something new and then i think
[22:29] learning something new and then i think they do know you also for
[22:31] they do know you also for showing them that kind of compassion
[22:33] showing them that kind of compassion then um
[22:34] then um one way and specific that i always
[22:37] one way and specific that i always remember is you have these picks
[22:39] remember is you have these picks oh yes your students can you can you
[22:41] oh yes your students can you can you talk a little bit about the influence of
[22:42] talk a little bit about the influence of that teacher and then about these picks
[22:44] that teacher and then about these picks yeah yeah well yeah i have this yeah
[22:48] yeah yeah well yeah i have this yeah well
[22:50] yeah like you know i think we all like
[22:54] yeah like you know i think we all like to teach
[22:54] to teach excellent teach you know great part of
[22:57] excellent teach you know great part of music
[22:58] music life and everything but then sometimes
[23:00] life and everything but then sometimes before we learn
[23:01] before we learn everybody has personality so that
[23:05] everybody has personality so that personality is kind of getting away to
[23:07] personality is kind of getting away to not uh
[23:08] not uh able to learn so pushing see i push a
[23:12] able to learn so pushing see i push a lot myself right go
[23:13] lot myself right go go go go you know and i did that a
[23:14] go go go you know and i did that a little bit with my students and some
[23:16] little bit with my students and some students got
[23:16] students got really scared you know because it's too
[23:18] really scared you know because it's too much you know too much passion too much
[23:21] much you know too much passion too much more
[23:21] more so i just decided to do like you know
[23:23] so i just decided to do like you know figuring out
[23:24] figuring out this one first thing don't worry
[23:27] this one first thing don't worry don't worry just don't worry just
[23:29] don't worry just don't worry just because first if you worry that's
[23:31] because first if you worry that's already it's not good so don't worry
[23:33] already it's not good so don't worry and next one once you know what to do
[23:37] and next one once you know what to do and this is what you do you compare with
[23:40] and this is what you do you compare with other students
[23:41] other students right so i said don't compare just don't
[23:44] right so i said don't compare just don't compare because
[23:45] compare because it's just my my mother said if you look
[23:47] it's just my my mother said if you look up if you do down it's not
[23:48] up if you do down it's not no end no no no need to have a
[23:52] no end no no no need to have a discussion about who's better who's bad
[23:54] discussion about who's better who's bad you know because
[23:56] you know because you have to do what you need to do and
[23:58] you have to do what you need to do and then if you do
[24:00] then if you do no work then this is how smart people
[24:04] no work then this is how smart people don't expect too fast
[24:08] don't expect too fast you know because once you're smart and
[24:10] you know because once you're smart and you work hard you
[24:11] you work hard you expect too much so don't expect too hard
[24:14] expect too much so don't expect too hard in too much you know too fast and then
[24:17] in too much you know too fast and then always
[24:18] always i think this one important be kind to
[24:20] i think this one important be kind to yourself because i
[24:21] yourself because i i i kind of hurt myself you know
[24:25] i i kind of hurt myself you know pushing me push myself you know because
[24:27] pushing me push myself you know because i always think i work many hours next
[24:29] i always think i work many hours next day
[24:30] day not enough you know that's the worst
[24:32] not enough you know that's the worst feeling and i think that's
[24:34] feeling and i think that's not good you know i mean for a while i
[24:36] not good you know i mean for a while i was doing like that but i think no good
[24:38] was doing like that but i think no good so i said
[24:39] so i said it's all all good you know i want to say
[24:42] it's all all good you know i want to say for people who are listening to this and
[24:43] for people who are listening to this and not watching it
[24:44] not watching it what tomo did was he wrote those
[24:46] what tomo did was he wrote those reminders they're actually printed
[24:48] reminders they're actually printed on guitar picks yeah and they have his
[24:51] on guitar picks yeah and they have his logo on them and then there's these four
[24:52] logo on them and then there's these four reminders and tomo
[24:54] reminders and tomo if people want to have those reminders
[24:56] if people want to have those reminders they can get those from you
[24:58] they can get those from you yeah well i mean pick boys sell these
[25:00] yeah well i mean pick boys sell these yeah that's great and
[25:01] yeah that's great and actually i can um this is one of the
[25:04] actually i can um this is one of the student um
[25:06] student um can you see yeah it's a letter from a
[25:09] can you see yeah it's a letter from a student a handwritten
[25:10] student a handwritten yeah that's called tomo's advice yeah
[25:13] yeah that's called tomo's advice yeah this is um
[25:17] you know i oh you see this pic came from
[25:20] you know i oh you see this pic came from this paper actually
[25:22] this paper actually oh wow because he's saying play with
[25:23] oh wow because he's saying play with feeling don't compare
[25:25] feeling don't compare yeah and i always say that but i didn't
[25:27] yeah and i always say that but i didn't realize i always said that to everybody
[25:30] realize i always said that to everybody do you know what i mean so like this one
[25:34] do you know what i mean so like this one came from owen you know my one of my
[25:36] came from owen you know my one of my students you know
[25:37] students you know he's at the berkeley now and uh he said
[25:40] he's at the berkeley now and uh he said happy birthday thank you for everything
[25:42] happy birthday thank you for everything and he gave me this
[25:43] and he gave me this cool right yeah so yeah yeah then after
[25:47] cool right yeah so yeah yeah then after that like you know i thought okay this
[25:48] that like you know i thought okay this is
[25:48] is actually do make a pick and then people
[25:51] actually do make a pick and then people like you know
[25:52] like you know kind of a you know great gift to
[25:55] kind of a you know great gift to something oops sorry you know a great
[25:57] something oops sorry you know a great gift to you know somebody who you
[26:00] gift to you know somebody who you you care about you know i thought that's
[26:01] you care about you know i thought that's kind of cool you know yeah i think
[26:02] kind of cool you know yeah i think that's cool that you learned that from
[26:04] that's cool that you learned that from your students
[26:05] your students you learned something about your
[26:06] you learned something about your teaching from your student that's right
[26:08] teaching from your student that's right yeah yeah that's that's great
[26:10] yeah yeah that's that's great about the teaching is that teaching is
[26:11] about the teaching is that teaching is not like i know everything
[26:14] not like i know everything and then i'm better than you just almost
[26:16] and then i'm better than you just almost like we are equal
[26:18] like we are equal you know as a human but then i kind of
[26:21] you know as a human but then i kind of know a little bit more than
[26:22] know a little bit more than you know my students and the students
[26:24] you know my students and the students know more than something i don't know
[26:26] know more than something i don't know you know so
[26:27] you know so we basically work together and then you
[26:30] we basically work together and then you know be kind to each other you know
[26:31] know be kind to each other you know that's
[26:32] that's that's the key you know yeah so that's
[26:34] that's the key you know yeah so that's why yes
[26:35] why yes exactly what you say i learned from my
[26:37] exactly what you say i learned from my students and then these came up from my
[26:39] students and then these came up from my student
[26:40] student because that's what i say but you know
[26:41] because that's what i say but you know yeah so
[26:43] yeah so i think this is the perfect time ian has
[26:45] i think this is the perfect time ian has a question that he asks every time
[26:47] a question that he asks every time okay and since you're talking about
[26:49] okay and since you're talking about students
[26:51] students and uh learning from them um when people
[26:54] and uh learning from them um when people learn from you
[26:56] learn from you they they may not know what to ask right
[26:58] they they may not know what to ask right away and uh ian what comes
[27:00] away and uh ian what comes from you yeah so i mean here's
[27:03] from you yeah so i mean here's you know a thing that i've been asking
[27:05] you know a thing that i've been asking everybody which is
[27:06] everybody which is what's something that you know in your
[27:09] what's something that you know in your experience is both
[27:10] experience is both a student coming to berkeley and as a
[27:13] a student coming to berkeley and as a somebody who's
[27:14] somebody who's taught so many studentses yes what's the
[27:16] taught so many studentses yes what's the thing that students
[27:18] thing that students should begin to think about or what's
[27:20] should begin to think about or what's the question they should ask
[27:22] the question they should ask that they don't yet know to ask i say i
[27:24] that they don't yet know to ask i say i see
[27:25] see yeah okay i think everyone
[27:28] yeah okay i think everyone should have a question written more like
[27:31] should have a question written more like you know
[27:32] you know this is opportunity you can ask anything
[27:35] this is opportunity you can ask anything you can ask
[27:36] you can ask literally anything besides the guitar
[27:38] literally anything besides the guitar really because that's a private lesson
[27:40] really because that's a private lesson you can ask anything
[27:41] you can ask anything so sometimes you know beginning of
[27:44] so sometimes you know beginning of lesson
[27:45] lesson you know so how's everything good so um
[27:48] you know so how's everything good so um what have we been doing i ask you know
[27:50] what have we been doing i ask you know some time and then do you have any
[27:51] some time and then do you have any questions
[27:52] questions any requests for today anything and
[27:54] any requests for today anything and sometimes
[27:55] sometimes i don't know i don't think about it and
[27:58] i don't know i don't think about it and then i said
[27:59] then i said why not this is listen you know you're
[28:01] why not this is listen you know you're looking forward to right yeah
[28:03] looking forward to right yeah but then you know you can participate
[28:06] but then you know you can participate more before
[28:07] more before you know so it's hard it's hard because
[28:11] you know so it's hard it's hard because almost like even question you have to
[28:13] almost like even question you have to you know understand what can i ask or
[28:15] you know understand what can i ask or what to do
[28:16] what to do so yeah so uh it's a good question
[28:21] so yeah so uh it's a good question i have to ask them beforehand you know
[28:24] i have to ask them beforehand you know do you have anything
[28:25] do you have anything you know yeah so that's what i do
[28:28] you know yeah so that's what i do usually
[28:29] usually open up a little bit so that um see like
[28:32] open up a little bit so that um see like some people
[28:33] some people very shy then if i go like this
[28:36] very shy then if i go like this how was the week good okay do you have
[28:38] how was the week good okay do you have any question
[28:40] any question no okay so let me do this way see if i
[28:42] no okay so let me do this way see if i do that
[28:43] do that i'm just pushing there too much my
[28:44] i'm just pushing there too much my opinion already to me so i just want to
[28:46] opinion already to me so i just want to have
[28:47] have peop you know like room like if i talk
[28:51] peop you know like room like if i talk and i try to do this one when i do i
[28:53] and i try to do this one when i do i talk i mean right now it's like you know
[28:55] talk i mean right now it's like you know this i talk about
[28:56] this i talk about i talk and i wait almost the same amount
[28:59] i talk and i wait almost the same amount that's i think a good for music because
[29:00] that's i think a good for music because i play a little bit
[29:01] i play a little bit and somebody play a little bit so we
[29:03] and somebody play a little bit so we have call on response you know
[29:05] have call on response you know and that's what i try to do in a lesson
[29:09] and that's what i try to do in a lesson so if somebody talk i just not say
[29:11] so if somebody talk i just not say anything
[29:13] anything same thing if somebody play i just don't
[29:16] same thing if somebody play i just don't say anything i just wait
[29:20] like if somebody jamming like this i
[29:22] like if somebody jamming like this i just wait
[29:24] just wait and then sometimes students go what i
[29:27] and then sometimes students go what i didn't say anything you you're saying
[29:28] didn't say anything you you're saying i'm just listening
[29:30] i'm just listening oh i didn't know ah ah you know like
[29:33] oh i didn't know ah ah you know like that
[29:33] that and i say what what what you were doing
[29:36] and i say what what what you were doing i was
[29:37] i was i was just noodling around
[29:40] i was just noodling around well if it's a lesson don't you think
[29:43] well if it's a lesson don't you think you have to think something to ask or
[29:46] you have to think something to ask or something to do
[29:47] something to do oh yeah yeah yeah you know like that you
[29:49] oh yeah yeah yeah you know like that you know kind of funny funny conversation
[29:52] know kind of funny funny conversation so you're asking them basically to take
[29:54] so you're asking them basically to take some responsibility in the lesson
[29:56] some responsibility in the lesson yeah learn like yes in other words yeah
[29:59] yeah learn like yes in other words yeah i definitely i have a responsibility to
[30:01] i definitely i have a responsibility to teach
[30:01] teach everything what i know but they have to
[30:04] everything what i know but they have to really
[30:05] really ask me what they want to know so that
[30:08] ask me what they want to know so that student basically gets
[30:12] student basically gets things from me more than i know
[30:15] things from me more than i know sometimes maybe you know trigger to you
[30:18] sometimes maybe you know trigger to you know
[30:18] know okay think about something then then i i
[30:21] okay think about something then then i i think and it
[30:22] think and it that that's great about i think you know
[30:25] that that's great about i think you know one-on-one lesson even virtually i think
[30:29] one-on-one lesson even virtually i think because every week i
[30:30] because every week i i i um and this
[30:34] i i um and this you know this is the kind of secret like
[30:35] you know this is the kind of secret like you know my secret is that
[30:38] you know my secret is that um i have a notebook for less
[30:42] um i have a notebook for less so berkeley lesson after i teach one
[30:44] so berkeley lesson after i teach one week i always write
[30:46] week i always write what one week each what topic was really
[30:48] what one week each what topic was really good i have
[30:51] good i have so this way i can recycle that topic to
[30:54] so this way i can recycle that topic to a little bit more detail so that i have
[30:57] a little bit more detail so that i have as a i have i could have as a lesson
[31:00] as a i have i could have as a lesson like a good one
[31:01] like a good one you know something like that yeah and so
[31:04] you know something like that yeah and so that really helping me and then yeah
[31:07] that really helping me and then yeah like
[31:08] like exactly i have to i have to ask and
[31:11] exactly i have to i have to ask and participate
[31:12] participate and then i have to make them
[31:13] and then i have to make them responsibility just like i
[31:15] responsibility just like i i used to do you know always a goal
[31:18] i used to do you know always a goal yeah you know tomo that i i love all
[31:21] yeah you know tomo that i i love all these things that you're talking about
[31:23] these things that you're talking about and they're really um really deep
[31:27] and they're really um really deep things in the way we connect with our
[31:29] things in the way we connect with our students and i think um
[31:31] students and i think um you know as kim said like you know they
[31:33] you know as kim said like you know they have this responsibility
[31:35] have this responsibility too and i think some maybe and maybe
[31:38] too and i think some maybe and maybe it's
[31:39] it's i don't know you know i can't speak
[31:41] i don't know you know i can't speak about 20 years ago but you know i think
[31:43] about 20 years ago but you know i think sometimes there's a thing with students
[31:44] sometimes there's a thing with students come in and they think just
[31:46] come in and they think just being there is it right they
[31:49] being there is it right they they've done it you know that's that's
[31:52] they've done it you know that's that's and but
[31:53] and but when i exp i try to explain to students
[31:55] when i exp i try to explain to students that when you ask a question
[31:57] that when you ask a question well you know especially in a class
[31:59] well you know especially in a class probably there are five other people
[32:01] probably there are five other people that are the same question but they're
[32:02] that are the same question but they're too shy to ask so you're
[32:04] too shy to ask so you're probably helping out a bunch of other
[32:06] probably helping out a bunch of other people but you're really helping
[32:07] people but you're really helping yourself out
[32:08] yourself out yeah yes but you're also helping the
[32:10] yeah yes but you're also helping the teacher
[32:11] teacher and they don't realize that because you
[32:13] and they don't realize that because you know when a student
[32:15] know when a student starts to ask me a question then i then
[32:17] starts to ask me a question then i then i understand
[32:19] i understand yes deeper what they need help with
[32:22] yes deeper what they need help with and it opens a doorway so i always tell
[32:24] and it opens a doorway so i always tell them that like
[32:25] them that like you actually when you're asking that
[32:27] you actually when you're asking that question there are all these levels
[32:30] question there are all these levels that you're opening up for
[32:33] that you're opening up for yourself obviously like you're going to
[32:35] yourself obviously like you're going to come all this way
[32:36] come all this way like here or you coming all the way from
[32:38] like here or you coming all the way from japan or wherever people come from they
[32:40] japan or wherever people come from they come a long way
[32:41] come a long way to be here don't miss that opportunity
[32:43] to be here don't miss that opportunity like here you can sit with tomo or you
[32:45] like here you can sit with tomo or you could sit
[32:46] could sit in perlac or you could sit with ian
[32:47] in perlac or you could sit with ian steed or any of these people and ask
[32:50] steed or any of these people and ask a question and yeah and so
[32:53] a question and yeah and so many times people think oh yeah again
[32:55] many times people think oh yeah again though that will be a stupid question
[32:57] though that will be a stupid question or whatever but when they really you get
[32:59] or whatever but when they really you get them to realize like
[33:00] them to realize like actually yeah it is your responsibility
[33:02] actually yeah it is your responsibility for yourself and for
[33:04] for yourself and for all of us right it really helps all of
[33:06] all of us right it really helps all of us helps me do my job better
[33:09] us helps me do my job better that's right when that door is open
[33:10] that's right when that door is open right yeah i think it's so like to me
[33:13] right yeah i think it's so like to me private lesson especially it's not so
[33:15] private lesson especially it's not so much
[33:16] much how much knowledge i have or how much
[33:18] how much knowledge i have or how much knowledge i get have to give it to
[33:20] knowledge i get have to give it to each student almost like i have to work
[33:22] each student almost like i have to work with each one
[33:24] with each one deeper communication that's my job you
[33:26] deeper communication that's my job you know
[33:27] know then i i i ask each students to
[33:32] then i i i ask each students to you know get into that you know
[33:34] you know get into that you know direction
[33:35] direction and yes um
[33:38] and yes um like you know um like you said um
[33:41] like you know um like you said um sometimes students
[33:42] sometimes students really don't know how to ask a question
[33:45] really don't know how to ask a question and that's
[33:46] and that's totally fine so i have to tell them
[33:48] totally fine so i have to tell them sometime
[33:49] sometime just don't be hesitate like you know ask
[33:52] just don't be hesitate like you know ask anything
[33:52] anything because something sometimes
[33:55] because something sometimes you know question is wrong so that
[33:59] you know question is wrong so that you just don't get the answer for
[34:01] you just don't get the answer for example
[34:02] example typical question ask you get better at
[34:04] typical question ask you get better at asking yeah exactly
[34:06] asking yeah exactly until you kind of refine it yeah yeah
[34:08] until you kind of refine it yeah yeah yeah just like a play phrase
[34:09] yeah just like a play phrase you know you know you know good phrase
[34:11] you know you know you know good phrase but you know knows it too long you know
[34:14] but you know knows it too long you know something like that then gradually you
[34:15] something like that then gradually you understand so many cut you know
[34:17] understand so many cut you know duration their shorter is better our
[34:19] duration their shorter is better our rhythm same thing that you know question
[34:21] rhythm same thing that you know question most of you know common question so what
[34:23] most of you know common question so what are you thinking going
[34:24] are you thinking going playing so that's the wrong question to
[34:27] playing so that's the wrong question to me because
[34:28] me because are you asking when are practicing or am
[34:30] are you asking when are practicing or am i performing but two different things
[34:33] i performing but two different things so if i play i think about food i think
[34:37] so if i play i think about food i think about something else you know but then
[34:39] about something else you know but then when i practice i think
[34:40] when i practice i think every detail and other questions people
[34:43] every detail and other questions people say
[34:43] say so should i think degree
[34:47] so should i think degree or domicile you know notes
[34:50] or domicile you know notes like that already you answer everything
[34:53] like that already you answer everything you say you have to do everything
[34:57] like that so okay anything you think
[35:00] like that so okay anything you think good question you do it right unless
[35:03] good question you do it right unless you get hurt i don't think you get hurt
[35:06] you get hurt i don't think you get hurt you know what i mean if you do like this
[35:07] you know what i mean if you do like this like you know then you know i had oh
[35:09] like you know then you know i had oh don't do it but i think like you know
[35:11] don't do it but i think like you know thinking about the nose
[35:13] thinking about the nose you know right because that question
[35:16] you know right because that question they're almost asking you
[35:17] they're almost asking you to get out of doing something and you're
[35:19] to get out of doing something and you're telling that's our responsibility you're
[35:21] telling that's our responsibility you're responsible for
[35:22] responsible for all yeah yeah i think so just so for
[35:25] all yeah yeah i think so just so for example like a
[35:26] example like a good one like you know always you know
[35:27] good one like you know always you know fan ask so how was john mayer
[35:30] fan ask so how was john mayer right why do you need to ask how is john
[35:33] right why do you need to ask how is john mayer
[35:34] mayer you have to be better than him you know
[35:37] you have to be better than him you know you have to work hard on this
[35:38] you have to work hard on this but these people kind of expecting me to
[35:40] but these people kind of expecting me to say john was okay
[35:42] say john was okay he's just a regular guy you know he's
[35:44] he's just a regular guy you know he's lucky
[35:45] lucky you know something like that right i can
[35:48] you know something like that right i can be lucky you know
[35:49] be lucky you know yeah yeah you know it's interesting
[35:51] yeah yeah you know it's interesting because a lot of people know you because
[35:53] because a lot of people know you because they know that you taught john for
[35:56] they know that you taught john for a while yeah john mayer and they also
[35:59] a while yeah john mayer and they also know you
[36:00] know you as a player um what are some of the
[36:03] as a player um what are some of the things you think that
[36:05] things you think that you learned um as a student that you
[36:09] you learned um as a student that you that you always think about you know
[36:11] that you always think about you know that
[36:12] that you know what i'm saying like were there
[36:13] you know what i'm saying like were there things where you were a student and now
[36:15] things where you were a student and now that you're a teacher and a
[36:17] that you're a teacher and a player yeah these are the little moments
[36:20] player yeah these are the little moments of learning that you
[36:21] of learning that you took with you and then maybe passed on
[36:22] took with you and then maybe passed on to some of your students
[36:24] to some of your students yeah and you're watching them kind of
[36:26] yeah and you're watching them kind of take that forward
[36:27] take that forward yeah like you know each teacher teaches
[36:30] yeah like you know each teacher teaches different things you know like
[36:31] different things you know like um i studied with bruce arnold you know
[36:35] um i studied with bruce arnold you know when i'm student
[36:36] when i'm student he taught me more modal stuff and uh
[36:40] he taught me more modal stuff and uh but funny bruce arnold the reason is i i
[36:43] but funny bruce arnold the reason is i i wanted to study charlie barakas but
[36:44] wanted to study charlie barakas but i called charity banakas they said you
[36:46] i called charity banakas they said you have to wait two years i say i'm not
[36:48] have to wait two years i say i'm not sure i can stay
[36:50] sure i can stay america for two years because maybe i
[36:52] america for two years because maybe i run out of money you know so
[36:53] run out of money you know so and i start asking people say somebody
[36:55] and i start asking people say somebody say oh study with
[36:56] say oh study with you know uh bruce you know
[37:00] you know uh bruce you know and uh you know i study this is funny
[37:04] and uh you know i study this is funny okay first lesson play this one he play
[37:07] okay first lesson play this one he play chords play this does that
[37:09] chords play this does that then he play blues he go like i think
[37:12] then he play blues he go like i think you need more blues does he say
[37:15] you need more blues does he say i say i come here to study jazz and not
[37:17] i say i come here to study jazz and not yet he said
[37:18] yet he said why because you don't have a blues
[37:22] why because you don't have a blues and the first lesson he asked me you
[37:24] and the first lesson he asked me you know transcribe johnny winter
[37:27] know transcribe johnny winter okay i thought you're going to ask me
[37:29] okay i thought you're going to ask me miles davis no
[37:31] miles davis no then i have to go by the records i
[37:32] then i have to go by the records i transcribe every note i write down
[37:35] transcribe every note i write down memory rain or something like that and i
[37:37] memory rain or something like that and i play exactly the same notes the first
[37:38] play exactly the same notes the first week
[37:39] week okay one more oman brothers sly guitar
[37:42] okay one more oman brothers sly guitar you
[37:42] you write everything and i did that and
[37:44] write everything and i did that and after that he taught me
[37:46] after that he taught me charlie baraka says oh yeah training all
[37:48] charlie baraka says oh yeah training all that stuff you know so so
[37:50] that stuff you know so so that lesson taught me well sometimes i
[37:52] that lesson taught me well sometimes i have to trust
[37:53] have to trust teacher about the judgment
[37:56] teacher about the judgment you know and the same thing i started
[37:58] you know and the same thing i started with mark french
[38:00] with mark french and he's a funny guy and uh you know i
[38:03] and he's a funny guy and uh you know i like
[38:03] like funky stuff like that and i didn't read
[38:05] funky stuff like that and i didn't read the music well so he said
[38:07] the music well so he said tomo read this one method book
[38:11] tomo read this one method book aha you know he just said something like
[38:13] aha you know he just said something like this read this one
[38:15] this read this one well try this one so he kind of
[38:18] well try this one so he kind of encouraged me to read me
[38:19] encouraged me to read me read written music now improvisation
[38:22] read written music now improvisation so he really taught me written music how
[38:25] so he really taught me written music how to play
[38:26] to play really clean and actually i taught that
[38:28] really clean and actually i taught that to john mayer
[38:30] to john mayer to make clean up his technique yeah so
[38:33] to make clean up his technique yeah so basically i
[38:34] basically i asked john to play method book for
[38:37] asked john to play method book for you know some pages play really clean
[38:39] you know some pages play really clean technique that's
[38:41] technique that's we because that way we don't improvise
[38:43] we because that way we don't improvise anything everything written
[38:45] anything everything written so if you play something else it's wrong
[38:48] so if you play something else it's wrong and everything else is uh accuracy in
[38:51] and everything else is uh accuracy in the articulation
[38:53] the articulation muting technique so doubts i taught him
[38:56] muting technique so doubts i taught him play b if you play open g you have to
[38:59] play b if you play open g you have to touch
[39:00] touch b to mute it yeah
[39:03] b to mute it yeah you don't have these things you know if
[39:05] you don't have these things you know if you have a lot of reverb and a
[39:06] you have a lot of reverb and a distortion
[39:07] distortion or overdrive play steve levon you know
[39:09] or overdrive play steve levon you know so i taught him
[39:11] so i taught him clean up technique that's the first
[39:13] clean up technique that's the first thing i learned from other teachers
[39:16] thing i learned from other teachers and blues you have to know you can't
[39:19] and blues you have to know you can't just play be
[39:20] just play be you know stevie rebel you have to
[39:21] you know stevie rebel you have to understand
[39:23] understand history of so like i thought bb king i
[39:26] history of so like i thought bb king i taught charlie christian so i make john
[39:29] taught charlie christian so i make john mayer to play
[39:30] mayer to play rose room not for not he hated
[39:34] rose room not for not he hated but i made him to do it so that that's
[39:37] but i made him to do it so that that's we cleaned up a
[39:38] we cleaned up a problem i bet he didn't hate it after he
[39:40] problem i bet he didn't hate it after he learned it i find it
[39:41] learned it i find it i think so yeah yeah i think so yeah he
[39:43] i think so yeah yeah i think so yeah he still hated it
[39:44] still hated it whoa okay maybe yeah
[39:48] whoa okay maybe yeah all right yeah i what are some of the
[39:52] all right yeah i what are some of the things that your students come back to
[39:54] things that your students come back to you and say
[39:55] you and say was valuable that they learned from you
[39:58] was valuable that they learned from you and
[39:58] and are you surprised by those things or do
[40:01] are you surprised by those things or do you think yeah
[40:02] you think yeah i knew you would think that was valuable
[40:04] i knew you would think that was valuable later on yeah like you know little
[40:06] later on yeah like you know little things
[40:06] things little things like always people say i
[40:08] little things like always people say i didn't know how important but to try
[40:10] didn't know how important but to try it that's always here try it
[40:14] it that's always here try it you try as a rhythm guitar something
[40:17] you try as a rhythm guitar something about the picky about the bending skill
[40:19] about the picky about the bending skill like that in little things you know then
[40:21] like that in little things you know then some people become professional
[40:24] some people become professional and then some situation they're very
[40:27] and then some situation they're very useful like casino some
[40:28] useful like casino some people become like a session player in
[40:30] people become like a session player in the country you know try as well
[40:32] the country you know try as well everywhere
[40:33] everywhere bending techniques everywhere if you
[40:34] bending techniques everywhere if you become a teacher you know you can teach
[40:37] become a teacher you know you can teach something very simple then you can teach
[40:39] something very simple then you can teach much more deeper you know something like
[40:40] much more deeper you know something like that yeah
[40:43] that yeah yeah so i think that's interesting
[40:44] yeah so i think that's interesting because fundamentals i mean
[40:46] because fundamentals i mean and all the conversations we've had with
[40:48] and all the conversations we've had with everyone it always comes back to these
[40:50] everyone it always comes back to these fundamentals
[40:51] fundamentals yeah you know what i mean like yes
[40:52] yeah you know what i mean like yes triads are are
[40:55] triads are are are part of every style of music and
[40:58] are part of every style of music and it for you know when you start to
[41:00] it for you know when you start to understand advanced harmony it's just
[41:01] understand advanced harmony it's just stacking up triads right that's right
[41:04] stacking up triads right that's right yeah
[41:05] yeah so yeah it's just such a and i know
[41:08] so yeah it's just such a and i know everyone here you know we are always
[41:10] everyone here you know we are always going back to those things
[41:11] going back to those things practicing i always say you can't you
[41:14] practicing i always say you can't you can't know them
[41:15] can't know them well enough that's right i still like
[41:18] well enough that's right i still like you know simple stuff to teach you know
[41:20] you know simple stuff to teach you know yeah
[41:21] yeah yep so that's i think i i think
[41:25] yep so that's i think i i think i think you know simplicity is really
[41:28] i think you know simplicity is really you know part of a sophistication you
[41:30] you know part of a sophistication you know so so anything people want to do
[41:32] know so so anything people want to do like you know
[41:33] like you know high technical stuff but still i i like
[41:36] high technical stuff but still i i like to kind of
[41:37] to kind of bring in you know foundation like that
[41:40] bring in you know foundation like that you know so
[41:40] you know so um that's what i like to teach yeah even
[41:44] um that's what i like to teach yeah even like
[41:44] like how to use the amplifier i always say a
[41:47] how to use the amplifier i always say a little bit brighter
[41:48] little bit brighter a little less bass no reverb so you can
[41:50] a little less bass no reverb so you can hear
[41:51] hear everything and that's the actually a lot
[41:53] everything and that's the actually a lot of people surprised
[41:55] of people surprised um wonder why they actually got me you
[41:58] um wonder why they actually got me you did my
[41:59] did my level seven jury
[42:02] level seven jury my level seven jury was with you and
[42:04] my level seven jury was with you and john buboyen and i still have those
[42:06] john buboyen and i still have those notes actually
[42:07] notes actually when i got this job julia found him okay
[42:09] when i got this job julia found him okay what did i say
[42:10] what did i say and you know it was funny i was working
[42:13] and you know it was funny i was working so hard on like
[42:14] so hard on like you know harmonic vocabulary and trying
[42:17] you know harmonic vocabulary and trying to play
[42:18] to play like upper structure and trying to be
[42:20] like upper structure and trying to be really clever in my playing
[42:22] really clever in my playing and you were like yeah that's good you
[42:25] and you were like yeah that's good you need to practice more with an amplifier
[42:28] need to practice more with an amplifier did i say that yeah and i and it was
[42:30] did i say that yeah and i and it was just like oh my god
[42:33] just like oh my god i'm worrying about all this big stuff
[42:35] i'm worrying about all this big stuff and i'm like i have this other
[42:36] and i'm like i have this other basic piece of playing the electric
[42:38] basic piece of playing the electric guitar just like
[42:40] guitar just like really weak and you were just like yeah
[42:42] really weak and you were just like yeah you need it's like
[42:43] you need it's like and you like sat with me actually and
[42:45] and you like sat with me actually and gave me a mini lesson
[42:47] gave me a mini lesson after that jury and you were like think
[42:49] after that jury and you were like think about this
[42:50] about this don't roll off any of your tone
[42:54] don't roll off any of your tone like play no reverb into the amplifier
[42:58] like play no reverb into the amplifier don't play with a bunch of bass don't
[43:00] don't play with a bunch of bass don't roll off your tone
[43:01] roll off your tone like be as naked as possible and get the
[43:04] like be as naked as possible and get the best tone
[43:04] best tone and it was like yeah man you just like
[43:08] and it was like yeah man you just like you just like speared me right there
[43:10] you just like speared me right there about the tone yeah it was great yeah
[43:12] about the tone yeah it was great yeah i mean especially like you know tests
[43:14] i mean especially like you know tests like that or professionals i try not to
[43:16] like that or professionals i try not to teach because i love to teach
[43:18] teach because i love to teach i used to i used to try to teach and
[43:20] i used to i used to try to teach and somebody said you told me you shouldn't
[43:21] somebody said you told me you shouldn't teach you know okay
[43:22] teach you know okay i shouldn't do it okay sorry yeah then
[43:24] i shouldn't do it okay sorry yeah then after that i don't say anything but
[43:26] after that i don't say anything but sometimes
[43:27] sometimes i have to say just one thing so i always
[43:30] i have to say just one thing so i always say like this after
[43:31] say like this after after i you know proficiency i can tell
[43:33] after i you know proficiency i can tell the person doesn't have a
[43:35] the person doesn't have a doesn't use the amplifier the only i ask
[43:38] doesn't use the amplifier the only i ask is one thing
[43:38] is one thing so do you practice m no and then always
[43:42] so do you practice m no and then always people say how do you know
[43:44] people say how do you know because that sounds like it you know
[43:48] because that sounds like it you know so that's that's the only thing i ask
[43:50] so that's that's the only thing i ask because amp is to me
[43:52] because amp is to me kind of a part of electric guitar really
[43:55] kind of a part of electric guitar really part of it important you know i mean
[43:57] part of it important you know i mean i mean okay this one you're gonna laugh
[44:00] i mean okay this one you're gonna laugh now um
[44:02] now um i've been i've been uh see i do a lot of
[44:05] i've been i've been uh see i do a lot of you know kind of hard
[44:06] you know kind of hard project myself right this is called
[44:08] project myself right this is called stratcaster in a pickup right
[44:10] stratcaster in a pickup right so now this is called front pickup
[44:11] so now this is called front pickup middle pickup rear pickup
[44:13] middle pickup rear pickup and most people use the front because
[44:14] and most people use the front because nice and warm middle not popular because
[44:17] nice and warm middle not popular because kind of bright you know
[44:18] kind of bright you know so since august i put the tape here so i
[44:21] so since august i put the tape here so i can
[44:22] can go to the front i only use a middle
[44:24] go to the front i only use a middle pickup so very difficult to play
[44:26] pickup so very difficult to play or turn all the way so i practice about
[44:29] or turn all the way so i practice about two months
[44:30] two months and then i came up with this
[44:37] and then i came up with this for the folks at home listening he's
[44:40] for the folks at home listening he's showing us a stratocaster
[44:42] showing us a stratocaster an actual stratocaster that only has a
[44:46] an actual stratocaster that only has a middle pickup
[44:48] middle pickup yeah you laugh right yeah yeah
[44:50] yeah you laugh right yeah yeah see this is my philosophy limitation
[44:54] see this is my philosophy limitation is a possibility and this guitar
[44:57] is a possibility and this guitar i play well and i'm very picky about the
[45:00] i play well and i'm very picky about the volume control on the tone control now i
[45:02] volume control on the tone control now i put the tape on
[45:04] put the tape on wow it's like the most extreme example
[45:07] wow it's like the most extreme example of self-limitation
[45:09] of self-limitation honestly um i love limitations yeah
[45:11] honestly um i love limitations yeah because you watch
[45:12] because you watch see i do see wow there's a whole
[45:15] see i do see wow there's a whole collection of them
[45:17] collection of them yeah yeah yeah but
[45:20] yeah yeah yeah but yeah then uh
[45:24] that's incredible because you know we've
[45:25] that's incredible because you know we've had other conversations with people
[45:27] had other conversations with people about
[45:28] about self-limitation and practice right like
[45:31] self-limitation and practice right like in one episode we talk about playing one
[45:33] in one episode we talk about playing one note for six
[45:34] note for six hours now we're talking about like
[45:37] hours now we're talking about like engineering that right into your
[45:39] engineering that right into your instrument
[45:40] instrument that's cool so this way i really focus
[45:44] that's cool so this way i really focus on my rhythm guitar because so
[45:46] on my rhythm guitar because so bright very bright attack is
[45:49] bright very bright attack is so also this is actually you know i
[45:52] so also this is actually you know i noticed this
[45:53] noticed this sounds better because no magnet no
[45:56] sounds better because no magnet no magnet
[45:56] magnet field around this you know so a little
[45:58] field around this you know so a little bit more sustained
[46:00] bit more sustained and then less wiring and a little bit
[46:02] and then less wiring and a little bit better a little bit more pure
[46:05] better a little bit more pure that's all you got this is all you can
[46:07] that's all you got this is all you can get
[46:09] get well that's you know tomo that's
[46:11] well that's you know tomo that's interesting because i think
[46:12] interesting because i think i mean i totally agree with you on all
[46:15] i mean i totally agree with you on all of those things and
[46:16] of those things and yeah it really makes you listen
[46:20] yeah it really makes you listen to yourself and i think there's a point
[46:22] to yourself and i think there's a point where students
[46:23] where students yeah need to start to you know yeah like
[46:26] yeah need to start to you know yeah like like ian was saying like he was so
[46:27] like ian was saying like he was so caught up in all these other things
[46:29] caught up in all these other things yeah really listening to the sound that
[46:31] yeah really listening to the sound that he made
[46:33] he made and it is another thing of being aware
[46:34] and it is another thing of being aware of all those levels like are you what
[46:36] of all those levels like are you what are you thinking about
[46:38] are you thinking about right no i'm just nothing when i'm
[46:40] right no i'm just nothing when i'm playing yeah
[46:41] playing yeah and and they those are all those
[46:44] and and they those are all those layers of a development and
[46:47] layers of a development and as you become a better player but you
[46:50] as you become a better player but you know
[46:51] know you as a teacher directing students that
[46:54] you as a teacher directing students that way to be honest
[46:55] way to be honest okay yeah we've got these other yeah of
[46:57] okay yeah we've got these other yeah of course you have to play in time of
[46:58] course you have to play in time of course you have to play in tune of
[46:59] course you have to play in tune of course you have to know where that note
[47:00] course you have to know where that note is yeah
[47:01] is yeah but you also have to listen to the sound
[47:03] but you also have to listen to the sound and that makes your technique better
[47:05] and that makes your technique better right when you start
[47:06] right when you start listening you hear oh ugh and you hear
[47:10] listening you hear oh ugh and you hear all the scrapes and the buzzes and
[47:12] all the scrapes and the buzzes and you know i i think especially nowadays
[47:15] you know i i think especially nowadays like
[47:15] like you know more equipment available and
[47:19] you know more equipment available and everything cheaper so like and so amp
[47:22] everything cheaper so like and so amp built in a
[47:22] built in a you know reverb river pedals many effect
[47:26] you know reverb river pedals many effect guitar has so many pickups right but
[47:28] guitar has so many pickups right but more and more
[47:29] more and more lately myself really into really play
[47:32] lately myself really into really play acoustic guitar
[47:33] acoustic guitar just because acoustic guitar it's
[47:35] just because acoustic guitar it's difficult it's no trick
[47:37] difficult it's no trick no trick
[47:41] you know right now i have my mental hero
[47:45] you know right now i have my mental hero is tommy emmanuel because he
[47:48] is tommy emmanuel because he really makes guitar sing by himself
[47:52] really makes guitar sing by himself and he really connects with the audience
[47:54] and he really connects with the audience and that's my
[47:55] and that's my mental hero now i i want to play like
[47:58] mental hero now i i want to play like him
[47:59] him just a guitar that's funny you say that
[48:02] just a guitar that's funny you say that because i just was about to ask you
[48:05] because i just was about to ask you we've talked you and i have talked
[48:07] we've talked you and i have talked lately about using like the solo guitar
[48:10] lately about using like the solo guitar you know like you're getting into being
[48:12] you know like you're getting into being a soloist and i was just about to ask
[48:14] a soloist and i was just about to ask you how these things apply
[48:17] you how these things apply um all this philosophy and practice
[48:19] um all this philosophy and practice applies to like taking what you do
[48:22] applies to like taking what you do and turning it into a solo art and it
[48:25] and turning it into a solo art and it sounds like you're
[48:26] sounds like you're you're listening pretty deeply to tommy
[48:29] you're listening pretty deeply to tommy yeah emmanuel who is
[48:30] yeah emmanuel who is is known for for being a soloist yeah
[48:33] is known for for being a soloist yeah but also
[48:34] but also i kind of i mean myself i kind of
[48:36] i kind of i mean myself i kind of researched about his
[48:37] researched about his his he in his past you know so i could
[48:40] his he in his past you know so i could tell he's like more like i mean
[48:42] tell he's like more like i mean i guess him just this is kind of briefly
[48:44] i guess him just this is kind of briefly like kind of my guessing
[48:45] like kind of my guessing he probably became like a great studio
[48:48] he probably became like a great studio guy
[48:48] guy or session guy who can play anything
[48:52] or session guy who can play anything then he wants his own voice to he start
[48:54] then he wants his own voice to he start getting rid of
[48:55] getting rid of situations so that he focus on
[48:59] situations so that he focus on guitar see some people think solo guitar
[49:01] guitar see some people think solo guitar oh yeah because you you can't have a
[49:03] oh yeah because you you can't have a band
[49:03] band that's why you play solo you know no no
[49:05] that's why you play solo you know no no no no i can have a band but just you
[49:07] no no i can have a band but just you know
[49:07] know sort of guitar is hard because you have
[49:09] sort of guitar is hard because you have to do everything and limitation to me is
[49:12] to do everything and limitation to me is kind of a
[49:13] kind of a i have only one one life you know so i
[49:15] i have only one one life you know so i cannot do everything so
[49:17] cannot do everything so i just kind of think i think tommy
[49:20] i just kind of think i think tommy figured out
[49:21] figured out not to do the electric not to do the
[49:23] not to do the electric not to do the band
[49:24] band and he figured out that's that's the way
[49:27] and he figured out that's that's the way he wants to play
[49:29] he wants to play solar guitar right i think that's
[49:31] solar guitar right i think that's beautiful you know yeah
[49:33] beautiful you know yeah that's great yeah so yeah that's why
[49:36] that's great yeah so yeah that's why um i have um lately actually
[49:42] this is kind of funny thing too as you
[49:44] this is kind of funny thing too as you see
[49:45] see i have a lot of guitars because i like a
[49:47] i have a lot of guitars because i like a lot of guitars and i like a lot of
[49:49] lot of guitars and i like a lot of different tone i want to learn
[49:50] different tone i want to learn everything but mostly i practice this
[49:52] everything but mostly i practice this guitar
[49:53] guitar okay so wait so for people who are
[49:54] okay so wait so for people who are listening how many guitars do you have
[49:56] listening how many guitars do you have behind you how many are
[49:58] behind you how many are it looks like 20. um i actually i
[50:01] it looks like 20. um i actually i counted here right i have a
[50:03] counted here right i have a 28 guitars in this room yeah there's
[50:05] 28 guitars in this room yeah there's more you moved your chair and i didn't
[50:10] realize
[50:12] realize oh wow there's a lot of guitars in there
[50:14] oh wow there's a lot of guitars in there yeah so this one
[50:15] yeah so this one my wife bet you know my wife built in
[50:18] my wife bet you know my wife built in this um
[50:19] this um also built in cabinet oh this is what
[50:23] also built in cabinet oh this is what yeah because i teach teach all the time
[50:25] yeah because i teach teach all the time so i have to have a
[50:26] so i have to have a different guitar to grab it so i have a
[50:29] different guitar to grab it so i have a seven guitar here
[50:30] seven guitar here okay and then i have uh uh
[50:33] okay and then i have uh uh 18 guitars here wow yeah
[50:37] 18 guitars here wow yeah yeah but the funny part is i have like
[50:38] yeah but the funny part is i have like nike i saw 20 28 guitars but i played
[50:41] nike i saw 20 28 guitars but i played this
[50:41] this most of the time and that's an acoustic
[50:43] most of the time and that's an acoustic what what kind of guitar is that this is
[50:45] what what kind of guitar is that this is orange wood
[50:46] orange wood oh cool yeah it's really cool yeah and
[50:48] oh cool yeah it's really cool yeah and then i can
[50:49] then i can this is funny right this this is the
[50:51] this is funny right this this is the guitar behind
[50:53] guitar behind is um i work with a company
[50:57] is um i work with a company i'm become ambassador like i almost tell
[50:59] i'm become ambassador like i almost tell company what to make
[51:01] company what to make so this is new guitar and next year
[51:03] so this is new guitar and next year you're gonna surprise
[51:06] you're gonna surprise you know surprised
[51:08] you know surprised [Laughter]
[51:11] [Laughter] yeah that's um that's another job i'm
[51:14] yeah that's um that's another job i'm doing
[51:14] doing kind of fun wow that sounds great yeah
[51:16] kind of fun wow that sounds great yeah that sounds great so anyway acoustic
[51:18] that sounds great so anyway acoustic guitar is really uh
[51:19] guitar is really uh my passion now yeah fantastic cool
[51:23] my passion now yeah fantastic cool cheryl what else is coming up for you as
[51:25] cheryl what else is coming up for you as we kind of come through this pot of
[51:27] we kind of come through this pot of coffee
[51:28] coffee what do you think yeah no i'm i mean
[51:30] what do you think yeah no i'm i mean tomo it was so
[51:31] tomo it was so great for you to share oh thanks so much
[51:34] great for you to share oh thanks so much for asking a lot
[51:35] for asking a lot you know yeah i mean yeah there are so
[51:38] you know yeah i mean yeah there are so many inspiring
[51:39] many inspiring um thoughts about connecting with
[51:41] um thoughts about connecting with students
[51:42] students yeah there's all communication that's
[51:44] yeah there's all communication that's that's a that's the thing you know
[51:46] that's a that's the thing you know guitar
[51:46] guitar i think to me guitar really brings kind
[51:49] i think to me guitar really brings kind of people
[51:49] of people together and make us very pure
[51:52] together and make us very pure and um you know exchange all the
[51:54] and um you know exchange all the opinions ideas and uh
[51:57] opinions ideas and uh it's really fun you know yeah that's all
[51:59] it's really fun you know yeah that's all all positive
[52:02] all positive i've actually got one question so yeah
[52:04] i've actually got one question so yeah yeah no
[52:05] yeah no i was hoping you would i was about to
[52:08] i was hoping you would i was about to ask
[52:08] ask you you have the look on your face ian
[52:10] you you have the look on your face ian has a look on his face okay
[52:11] has a look on his face okay he has a question i really need to work
[52:13] he has a question i really need to work on a poker face don't i
[52:15] on a poker face don't i i like it i like knowing i feel like
[52:17] i like it i like knowing i feel like he's got something to say
[52:19] he's got something to say man tomo
[52:22] man tomo like you are uh like for anybody
[52:25] like you are uh like for anybody listening
[52:26] listening if you've ever been on social media you
[52:28] if you've ever been on social media you already know who tomo is
[52:30] already know who tomo is right so you've got such a strong
[52:34] right so you've got such a strong uh base on like digital platforms
[52:38] uh base on like digital platforms and i'm curious about like how you know
[52:41] and i'm curious about like how you know now that we're in this time you know
[52:44] now that we're in this time you know hopefully as temporary as it is
[52:46] hopefully as temporary as it is where everything's remote um i'm just
[52:49] where everything's remote um i'm just curious about like music making
[52:51] curious about like music making in this this sort of time and like
[52:54] in this this sort of time and like there's a lot of folks who are just like
[52:56] there's a lot of folks who are just like you know
[52:57] you know kind of defeatist about all of it and
[52:59] kind of defeatist about all of it and hearing your
[53:00] hearing your like just really strong work ethic
[53:04] like just really strong work ethic around it and just like your passion for
[53:05] around it and just like your passion for it
[53:06] it and the fact that you don't like you're
[53:07] and the fact that you don't like you're talking about playing solo guitar you
[53:09] talking about playing solo guitar you don't necessarily need anybody else
[53:11] don't necessarily need anybody else to come in and play in a band with you
[53:13] to come in and play in a band with you for you to be making music and sharing
[53:15] for you to be making music and sharing it online
[53:16] it online and i i guess i'm just curious if you
[53:18] and i i guess i'm just curious if you have anything to say for
[53:20] have anything to say for you know so many of these guitarists and
[53:22] you know so many of these guitarists and stuff yeah
[53:23] stuff yeah yeah now we're at home
[53:26] yeah now we're at home a lot of the time by ourselves you know
[53:28] a lot of the time by ourselves you know what i mean and how it's not stopping
[53:30] what i mean and how it's not stopping you from making music
[53:32] you from making music right right so like i i so idea is this
[53:35] right right so like i i so idea is this like you know i
[53:36] like you know i you know i figured out kind of quickly
[53:38] you know i figured out kind of quickly but um
[53:39] but um about the internet like remember
[53:42] about the internet like remember when we have a first you know we can
[53:44] when we have a first you know we can have a home page
[53:46] have a home page you know own home page that was exciting
[53:49] you know own home page that was exciting make our own home page and then
[53:52] make our own home page and then you know i post some story or you know
[53:55] you know i post some story or you know not like before the instagram just
[53:56] not like before the instagram just making
[53:57] making home page so every time you have to add
[53:59] home page so every time you have to add something
[54:00] something then you send out the email
[54:04] then you send out the email but i didn't realize that's not really
[54:05] but i didn't realize that's not really connecting everybody only
[54:08] connecting everybody only whoever you know nowadays
[54:11] whoever you know nowadays if you have a instagram youtube or
[54:13] if you have a instagram youtube or social media you can connect
[54:14] social media you can connect everybody but somebody did this
[54:18] everybody but somebody did this funky program there nobody knows what's
[54:20] funky program there nobody knows what's going on
[54:21] going on that if you just post it doesn't do
[54:23] that if you just post it doesn't do anything
[54:24] anything literally but if you do something
[54:28] literally but if you do something special continuously
[54:31] special continuously work hard to do that then you become one
[54:34] work hard to do that then you become one of
[54:35] of popular and then it's all free you don't
[54:39] popular and then it's all free you don't have to pay anybody
[54:41] have to pay anybody you can do that but nobody know what to
[54:44] you can do that but nobody know what to do that's kind of cool part nobody knows
[54:46] do that's kind of cool part nobody knows what to do
[54:47] what to do but there's a possibility then that's
[54:50] but there's a possibility then that's i'm believing to doing it so
[54:52] i'm believing to doing it so i have to tell you first like even
[54:54] i have to tell you first like even instagram
[54:55] instagram you know you you can get the numbers but
[54:58] you know you you can get the numbers but difficult to get
[54:59] difficult to get steady you know so i have to figure out
[55:01] steady you know so i have to figure out what to do
[55:02] what to do then i i have my own kind of you know
[55:04] then i i have my own kind of you know rhythm to do it
[55:06] rhythm to do it and then youtube was really hard because
[55:09] and then youtube was really hard because if i play something really good band
[55:13] if i play something really good band you know build a 40 or you know 400 like
[55:17] you know build a 40 or you know 400 like that
[55:17] that nothing really go over the saga you know
[55:20] nothing really go over the saga you know and i didn't know how to do it
[55:22] and i didn't know how to do it then gradually i figured out a little
[55:25] then gradually i figured out a little bit more
[55:26] bit more like entertainment purpose you know so
[55:29] like entertainment purpose you know so um
[55:30] um then gradually i created better one
[55:33] then gradually i created better one then end of last year i got a hundred
[55:36] then end of last year i got a hundred thousand
[55:38] thousand and that was like a really important
[55:40] and that was like a really important hundred thousand
[55:41] hundred thousand then youtube already kind of recognizing
[55:44] then youtube already kind of recognizing the numbers and
[55:46] the numbers and activity then that point goes faster
[55:50] activity then that point goes faster so now i have 259 000.
[55:54] so now i have 259 000. every day i have a thousand but if i
[55:57] every day i have a thousand but if i don't do a good job
[55:58] don't do a good job go down see that's what i love about it
[56:01] go down see that's what i love about it i have to do a good job
[56:02] i have to do a good job every time that's hard you know yeah
[56:05] every time that's hard you know yeah yeah but i think people really like
[56:07] yeah but i think people really like follow you and like you on
[56:08] follow you and like you on social media and all that also just
[56:10] social media and all that also just because like your passion for the music
[56:13] because like your passion for the music and your sort of need to do it yeah
[56:16] and your sort of need to do it yeah continues
[56:17] continues even if it's just you at home right
[56:19] even if it's just you at home right right right but also i like i like to
[56:21] right right but also i like i like to kind of
[56:21] kind of you know encourage people to do have fun
[56:25] you know encourage people to do have fun with the guitar and people you know in
[56:27] with the guitar and people you know in general so
[56:28] general so yeah definitely social media is i think
[56:31] yeah definitely social media is i think great to you know connect with
[56:32] great to you know connect with people then share that something have
[56:35] people then share that something have fun even like
[56:36] fun even like did you know how to play this
[56:43] see even like that okay so for the
[56:45] see even like that okay so for the people at home
[56:47] people at home uh tomo was playing uh a makeshift
[56:49] uh tomo was playing uh a makeshift guitar out of what appears to be a pie
[56:52] guitar out of what appears to be a pie crust
[56:53] crust uh cardboard box but this is a 2019

[57:03] [Laughter] i like this one because if you put the p
[57:13] i like this one because if you put the p you can play you know scale around the
[57:16] you can play you know scale around the letters
[57:17] letters so that's why i thought this is kind of
[57:18] so that's why i thought this is kind of fun to play okay
[57:20] fun to play okay so you've actually really thought that
[57:21] so you've actually really thought that through and i think that's a good lesson
[57:23] through and i think that's a good lesson to everyone like
[57:24] to everyone like through
