# Bhagavad Gita Verse by Verse | Chapter 3 : Lecture 5 | Verse 14-16 | Feb 9

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HV9HkI8sIZw

[00:20] So last week we were on the 13th verse of chapter three of the Gita Karma Yoga the path of action in this world.
[00:36] How you can act being in the world and concurrently move towards the self the Atman the goal of human existence.
[00:48] That is what we all want.
[00:51] We want to be able to be in the world and still grow spiritually.
[00:58] So how do you do that is this chapter?
[01:00] so in the 12th verse he spoke about the wrong type of action
[01:09] the lowest is when you don't want to act and yet want something in return
[01:18] so this is tamas
[01:21] it's gross laziness lethargy ignorance selfishness
[01:27] so you want to avoid paying the price for what you acquire in life
[01:32] it's the worst thing
[01:37] first sign is you must at least be willing to work pay the price for your what you want
[01:47] right that's what we talk about you get what you deserve not what you desire
[01:52] so Shakespeare has these uh mythical
[02:03] creatures caliban half man half fish you know.
[02:06] so every morning they used to wake up and beg the gods the Heavens to open up and shower gold.
[02:17] it's all sarcasm he's trying to tell us that's what we all do you go on praying you want something why don't you put in the effort for it that's what he says and you want to take without putting in the effort he says this is thievery theft.
[02:42] he who enjoys what is given without having offered back is indeed a thief.
[02:52] so this is thas you want to eat without producing now higher than thas we did in the 13th verse those Sinners who cook for their
[03:06] own sake eat.
[03:09] sin so what he's saying is you cook.
[03:12] means you put in the effort it's not.
[03:14] that you're not willing to put in the.
[03:17] effort but it is propelled by a selfish.
[03:21] desire just to acquire an enjoy for.
[03:24] oneself perhaps the.
[03:27] family so you cook for for your own.
[03:31] sake so you are a sinner in the sense.
[03:34] the fact that you're selfish your mind.
[03:36] will be agitated Disturbed number one I.
[03:40] told you last week please understand.
[03:42] this.
[03:43] concept sin is the mental.
[03:50] agitation because sin is what is opposed.
[03:53] to the self anything opposed to the.
[03:56] self to Divinity to the soul.
[04:01] is considered.
[04:03] sin so the soul is absolute peace and.
[04:06] Bliss so any agitation is actually sin.
[04:12] In fact the fact that you're born the fact that your in the world itself is because you've left the self.
[04:20] You because we have left the reality we have taken this individuality and that means sorrow.
[04:30] We don't understand that because we are climatized to it.
[04:34] So you make it worse by selfishness.
[04:37] That's what he says those Sinners who are just cooking for their own sake you hope for enjoyment but you eat sin.
[04:51] Very interesting powerful how he puts it.
[04:54] He doesn't say you cook for your own sake you eat food.
[04:56] He not saying that you eat sin.
[05:01] So because you're selfish whatever you may gain in the
[05:06] world your desires will only flare up increase so the net result is more agitation.
[05:18] it's amazing some of you say you know in comments a person has so much Money Millionaire billionaire what is he doing acquiring more and more because it's irrelevant what you have the mind is so fled up for more.
[05:35] so you're highly Disturbed in life that's what you have to avoid so you don't act you're thieving you act selfishly you're going to eat sin now what do you do he says the righteous who eat the remnants of sacrifice are freed from all sin see every choice of word is
[06:09] important number one righteous means a person who sacrifices who genuinely engages in a higher purpose beyond their selfish interest.
[06:20] so what do you sacrifice your selfishness remember that Yaga sacrifice is the sacrifice of the the self-centeredness I told you yesterday.
[06:35] also you got to introspect and put in the effort analyze where you're being selfish without that is not going to work.
[06:44] all the study in the world is not going to work where is the ego where is this IE and my my family.
[06:54] that's all you can think my children.
[07:01] so your focus is on sacrifice on service and you eat the remnant of
[07:11] Sacrifice whatever remains means your eye is not on the fruit, your eyes is on the sacrifice, on the higher purpose.
[07:21] What comes out of it, you're content with it.
[07:23] This is what life should be.
[07:26] Your focus should be on action, whatever comes out of it, that's it.
[07:33] The remnant, in spiritual terms, it's called Prasad.
[07:36] Prasad means what remains after the sacrifice.
[07:41] So in the ritual, the ashes remain and which you smear on your forehead as a because you have been freed from all sin.
[07:51] Your existing desires drop off.
[07:57] You get more and more peace and happiness.
[08:00] That is the real Prasad, that is what remains.
[08:05] And because you are sacrificing, your mind is peaceful, your action is.
[08:11] Productive so materially you're taken care of.
[08:16] You genuinely work for your organization not for yourself.
[08:19] You don't have to work, it will come.
[08:24] Genuinely work for your patients not yourself.
[08:27] They will come to you.
[08:28] I've told you so many examples.
[08:30] So many of you have told me I got promoted completely unexpectedly.
[08:36] I got a big bonus, blah blah company.
[08:39] The people around you recognize that this is the secret.
[08:45] I've been talking to you about this Yaga.
[08:47] Remember he said few verses ago, this is the wish fulfilling cow as it were.
[08:54] That which grants you all you want.
[09:00] You're free from all sin.
[09:04] So in the present you are peaceful.
[09:07] In the future your existing desires go, you'll become more peaceful.
[09:09] What else you?
[09:14] Want so Tamas and Rajas. Tamas is this ignorance, lethargy. Rajas is that selfish desire in action.
[09:27] Both don't work, but Rajas is still better. At least you're willing to put in effort. Tamas is the worst.
[09:37] So wherever you're Tamasik, you must become Rajas. Start acting.
[09:44] And wherever you are already acting, direct the action to a higher purpose. That's what you have to do.
[09:54] But that selfishness, like I told you last week, right? That monkey in the peanuts, I give that example. No, in that peanut jar will not leave the selfishness because that instant gratification you do get. That's the.
[10:22] Problem, so this was verse 13 which we did last week, 12 and 13 together.
[10:30] Now 14 and 15 are chanted together.
[10:33] He gives an agricultural metaphor again.
[10:39] It's all symbolic to explain how yagna sacrifice is the pivot between Brahman reality, God, and the human being.
[10:51] What lies in the middle is nothing but sacrifice.
[10:55] So he says through that sacrifice you've come to this state.
[11:01] Now through sacrifice get back.
[11:05] It's fascinating how he puts it and people misunderstand this also.
[11:09] Do when there's a drought, do yagna and the rain will come.
[11:16] See, is is unbelievable how nobody understands.
[11:24] anything so clear so far
[11:31] yes why don't you kick off proceedings
[11:35] G um you have said in the past that vanta is not against acquisition and enjoyment
[11:44] but last time on verse 13 you said acquirers never enjoy can you clarify reconcile
[11:54] like I said as long as you acquisition and enjoyment is a byproduct of a sacrificial life it's okay
[12:04] but if it is a if it is the purpose of your life you can never enjoy that's the difference
[12:10] so per se there's nothing wrong in acquisition enjoyment but it should be a byproduct not the purpose of your life
[12:19] the purpose of your life should be to
[12:25] work for a higher cause in this world to attain Enlightenment ultimately.
[12:33] that should be the purpose.
[12:35] while doing that purpose you will gain material benefits that you can enjoy but your eye is not there.
[12:43] so that's the subtle difference.
[12:49] because the like I've told you how much ever you acquire your desire will only flare up for more.
[12:59] you seed in the world B fellow satisfied.
[13:02] even the richest people in the world just craving for more.
[13:08] unbelievable.
[13:09] they must be having thousand 10,000 100,000 times more wealth than you'll ever have.
[13:14] what's the purpose.
[13:18] same agitation same hatred same this sad sad.
[13:26] State Swami G says you know if I want to curse anybody body I'll tell them become a millionaire.
[13:30] Billionaire completely gone so he say next day I get calls please curse me.
[13:38] Don't bless me please curse me.
[13:41] Even that they don't understand what I want to be cursed.
[13:47] Can't understand H go ahead can you explain the enjoyment and acquisition being a byproduct.
[13:59] Byproduct in the sense like I just explained your purpose in life is to serve your organization.
[14:08] That's your goal that should be your mission and when you do that you you will get material benefits because you're working hard you're working diligently.
[14:19] So what you get you enjoy spend it and enjoy but that's not why you're living your life just to have a.
[14:28] better house or or a better car or a next vacation that's not the purpose of your existence.
[14:32] it's all just your mental attitude.
[14:38] see I remember we had when we kid we had some relatives very well off.
[14:44] you know far more well off than us you also okay and they built uh those days the farm houses and all tennis courts and all.
[14:55] so a Talk of the Town nobody had tennis Court those days in India in their homes.
[15:02] and I went there about I don't know 10 15 years ago after a long time many years.
[15:09] no court no nothing all lawn and all.
[15:14] I said where's that beautiful qut you know I really wanted to play a little bit myself.
[15:19] they're saying that I don't know how you remember that.
[15:22] I said nobody ever played so we made it into lawn.
[15:30] They demolished it.
[15:33] Literally no fellow plays tennis in his own.
[15:39] Quote, because the mind is so disturbed.
[15:43] For more that you have neither time or inclination to enjoy what you have.
[15:49] Mostly only son-in-law enjoys, or maybe the Swami.
[15:52] The both the fellows will be swimming in your swimming pool.
[15:57] That be going and earning crazy.
[16:01] So Vanta says at least enjoy what you have.
[16:04] No time, no inclination because the mind is so disturbed for the next thing.
[16:10] Sad, that's what he means.
[16:17] Eat sin.
[16:19] So there's a saying, fools build houses, the wise live in them.
[16:29] So you must build.
[16:31] a house and live in it.
[16:37] so you acquire acquire never enjoy.
[16:41] really speaking it's very surface.
[16:48] while explaining verse 12 you said craving for free is also a form of feeling or stealing.
[16:55] so when we introduce about this knowledge to someone for the first time it's a different story.
[17:01] whether they persist or not but we tell them that the classes are free of cost to attract them to come for the class at least for the first time.
[17:11] is it okay to say that or when you tell somebody the CL these classes are free.
[17:17] we talking about you should not uh what we talk last time this free is A thieving right.
[17:23] because you don't want to see that is different because you're trying to attract them because they have a
[17:32] Weakness, they don't know what it is.
[17:34] They don't, nobody understands what it is.
[17:37] And not just that, traditionally this knowledge is never charged.
[17:41] You know, because it is meant for the service of humanity.
[17:45] So in our tradition, people often tell me, why don't you?
[17:51] Can you imagine having a ticket to come and study the Gita?
[17:56] I mean, it's so jarring, you can't even think about it.
[17:59] Uh, for special events, we do have for the retreats and all, just to run the work.
[18:07] How will the work get run, you know?
[18:08] For that, we discriminately do it, but uh, it's not the purpose of.
[18:16] So given it, and whoever wants to support, they find it important that this cause should go on.
[18:23] Your support, don't want to, don't, what is the problem?
[18:27] But that is different than what we are saying here, where you don't want.
[18:34] to pay you want something for nothing
[18:36] that attitude right that's totally different
[18:40] you should be willing to earn what you get tamasik person
[18:43] doesn't want to earn he wants something out of nothing
[18:51] and that weakness is exploited in all the marketing free this free that
[18:54] buy one get two free buy this second one free
[19:03] all there's no such thing they just exploit that tendency of yours to grab
[19:05] everybody around you encourages it
[19:15] what do you know
[19:18] so in fact when you introduce somebody you shouldn't say it's no charge
[19:21] you should say this is a knowledge which is there there if they interested they'll come they won't bother about anything else
[19:30] if they ask you can
[19:37] Say, but why do you say that? You say this is something which has helped me.
[19:42] It would be good for you if you explore it.
[19:45] That's all you should say.
[19:51] Right.
[19:54] David, aam G, thank you for taking my question.
[19:57] Um, I'm I'm a little confused.
[20:02] I understand the uh the goal of a of a life of service, bringing me to the higher power.
[20:07] But then to the to the self, to the otman.
[20:09] But then you said, well, if we've earned a vacation, we can go and enjoy it.
[20:17] So how like I'm having trouble reconciling how do I go and enjoy a vacation and still be of service?
[20:28] Then you know, are there times when I'm not in service?
[20:31] Yes, because nobody is capable of being on a
[20:37] higher plane all the time if you can
[20:41] you're almost enlightened so all of us
[20:44] have certain
[20:46] material uh emotional requirements in
[20:51] life so that's okay to fulfill as long
[20:54] as they're not impeding your path
[20:57] towards the higher
[20:59] so you want to watch a movie in the
[21:02] evening your your question is like
[21:03] asking is it okay I should be serving
[21:06] can you serve 24 hours a day you
[21:08] can't the purpose of your life should be
[21:11] to grow as a human being that doesn't
[21:14] mean you can do it 24/7 you need rest
[21:17] you need
[21:19] relaxation you need uh companionship
[21:22] emotions whatever it
[21:24] is so don't overstep your limits if you
[21:29] try
[21:31] and be spiritual Beyond Your Capacity
[21:34] you will end up frustrated because your
[21:36] mind is not
[21:38] ready so that's why vidanta is so
[21:41] practical because Vidant doesn't say
[21:44] don't enjoy that's what R was asking or
[21:47] don't
[21:48] acquire but that's not the goal of your
[21:50] life you understand yes I need
[21:53] this but my purpose in life my primary
[21:57] goal is to grow
[22:01] so good questions but uh you all should
[22:05] understand you can't take it beyond the
[22:06] point you're not
[22:09] capable see it's like you uh we have a
[22:11] threee course at the Academy for
[22:13] students who 3 years straight they live
[22:16] there and study I went through it I was
[22:18] there for 10
[22:20] years now your question is like saying
[22:23] shouldn't we all be there you know
[22:24] that's 247 you're not
[22:27] capable of of dedicating your whole life
[22:30] to it so you need your work and
[22:32] environment and fulfill your
[22:35] obligations but that's not the purpose
[22:37] of your existence as you gain this
[22:40] knowledge you'll understand the purpose
[22:43] is to
[22:43] grow to
[22:47] evolve you clear David thank you yeah
[22:56] chitra goam G I had a question on the
[22:59] difference between rajas and satk
[23:01] behavior based on some examples that
[23:03] you've given in the past you often give
[23:06] Sports examples uh tennis Cricket right
[23:09] and to me it doesn't seem like saic
[23:11] Behavior I know you have drawn a
[23:14] parallel between them uh working for the
[23:18] country uh but to me military service is
[23:21] more like that because there is no Fame
[23:23] to be gained there's no money in it but
[23:26] the the sports example
[23:29] are sort of in a gray area to me um like
[23:32] you get it's not a fruit of the it's not
[23:35] a remnant of sacrifice you could very
[23:37] much be doing it for your own ego uh for
[23:41] the fame that is all your attitude
[23:44] towards
[23:45] it uh uh Soldier could also be working
[23:49] for their own promotion I want to be a
[23:52] general that is their mission so it's
[23:55] nothing to do with the action I could
[23:58] could be working selfishly in this field
[24:01] I'm teaching these principles it could
[24:03] be purely selfish what can I get out of
[24:05] you all you people so act the field has
[24:09] nothing to do with it it's your
[24:12] attitude and you can't say one field is
[24:14] more selfless than the
[24:16] other uh because that depends upon your
[24:20] uh predilection your nature so you have
[24:24] a nature as a sports person why should
[24:26] you do soldiering you have a nature as a
[24:29] accountant why should you do
[24:31] marketing so you're equating it to the
[24:34] field it's your attitude in the field
[24:38] which is the most important
[24:40] thing like I told you you could be at
[24:42] home serving your family it could be
[24:44] selfless you don't want anything you're
[24:47] just doing it as a pure Duty your whole
[24:50] mission is to grow this is part of your
[24:54] karma so anything you can make spiritual
[24:57] or Mater
[24:59] it's all your where are your
[25:04] thoughts so Sports person I told you the
[25:07] attitude should be for your country or
[25:09] for entertain I want to genuinely use
[25:12] this talent to entertain people it's
[25:15] purely selfless if they do it like that
[25:18] they don't know where they'll be they'll
[25:19] be right on
[25:21] top they all become selfish sooner or
[25:24] later
[25:29] there are instances of soldiers trapping
[25:31] the other soldiers and spying for the
[25:34] other country what does the action have
[25:35] to
[25:39] do yes
[25:44] DHI uh gutam g i I have question about
[25:49] selfing uh serving selflessly for
[25:53] organization um most of the
[25:56] organizations are for profit compan
[25:58] and in my own personal
[26:00] experience I saw that when some when I
[26:05] sawed selflessly for really long time
[26:08] instead of being valued I got
[26:10] exploited
[26:12] and
[26:14] so how to deal with that one is that and
[26:17] second if I if I'm working for some
[26:21] company and their values or something
[26:23] changes or rather my question would be
[26:26] how to find uh
[26:29] Right company to solve see again these
[26:33] are all questions people have I
[26:35] appreciate them like I
[26:37] said the when you say I got exploited
[26:40] and all that is your shortcoming because
[26:43] you may be serving you're not using your
[26:47] intellect you are indiscriminately doing
[26:51] it towards people who don't deserve it
[26:55] so you need to use your intellect
[26:59] right yudish was a very selfless person
[27:02] he was exploited by duryodhana because
[27:05] he didn't use his intellect you could be
[27:07] the most selfless most righteous person
[27:10] if you don't use your thinking you will
[27:12] get exploited very
[27:14] simple because so that is another that
[27:18] is a different
[27:19] thing second you said what how should
[27:23] you locate the field of action should be
[27:26] according to your nature like I just
[27:28] mentioned and again it's your attitude
[27:31] others are selfish leave them alone
[27:33] you're not capable of leaving everything
[27:36] you need to be in the world so find the
[27:38] best
[27:39] possible fix uh the what do you call
[27:42] that
[27:43] um what is that
[27:46] word best possible match for your talent
[27:49] and work again it's internal work as
[27:53] unselfishly as you can that's all you
[27:57] find one organ ization is not to your
[27:59] talent or aligns with your values find
[28:02] something else which does it's as simple
[28:04] as that you don't want to work for a
[28:07] company which manufactures
[28:09] cigarettes mean look for another
[28:12] organization which is at least not
[28:14] exploiting other people's help you
[28:16] know so it's your
[28:21] attitude thank you so 14 and 15 together
[28:54] br
[29:14] from food comes forth
[29:17] beings from rain food is produced from
[29:21] yna arises
[29:24] rain and Yaga which is sacrifice
[29:28] is born of
[29:37] action
[29:39] 15 know that action arises from
[29:43] Brahma Brahma arises from the
[29:48] imperishable
[29:50] Brahman therefore the all pervading
[29:55] Brahman ever rests in yagna
[30:02] sacrifice full
[30:04] confusion right this is exactly how the
[30:08] upanishads
[30:11] are because they put it in such a
[30:15] convoluted way so that you think it's
[30:18] not given directly it's to exercise the
[30:22] intellect using terms that were familiar
[30:25] in those
[30:26] days people understood what these terms
[30:29] meant so 14 is actually the second part
[30:34] 15 is the first part and that also they
[30:36] deliberately
[30:38] put so you start from
[30:41] 15 Brahman the imperishable reality
[30:46] Divinity God which is nothing but the
[30:50] substratum of this entire
[30:54] universe just as the ocean is the
[30:56] substratum of
[30:59] waves that's the example you can
[31:02] use from that imperishable
[31:06] Brahman comes Brahma
[31:10] Brahma translated as Creator represents
[31:18] creation so philosophically what is
[31:21] happening Brahman is the reality
[31:25] everywhere there's nothing but
[31:27] consciousness Brahman do we see that we
[31:31] don't we are ignorant of that
[31:34] reality therefore we project this
[31:40] world so the standard example used in
[31:43] vanta is the rope and snake there is a
[31:47] rope a boy in the Twilight doesn't see
[31:51] it as a rope therefore he thinks it's a
[31:54] snake and he's
[31:55] scared so why doesn't he why does he see
[31:58] the
[32:00] snake
[32:03] because he's ignorant of the fact that
[32:06] it's a
[32:08] rope and where does the ignorance come
[32:11] from the Rope itself because as long as
[32:15] an object exists there's a possibility
[32:18] not to understand it as it
[32:21] is so you got to understand these
[32:23] fundamentals so as long as Brahman
[32:26] exists
[32:28] there is a
[32:29] possibility not to recognize Brahman as
[32:32] Brahman to become ignorant of
[32:36] Brahman and that ignorance projects this
[32:39] world which is Brahma the Creator so
[32:43] from Brahman comes
[32:47] Brahma and once a being is
[32:52] created because you have lost that Bliss
[32:55] of the self you are hungry thirsting for
[33:01] happiness and therefore you have to
[33:05] act it is desire that thirst which
[33:08] produces action that's what he says from
[33:11] Brahma
[33:13] arises action got
[33:16] it Brahman so in the puranas for the
[33:20] masses they give it a story Vishnu Vish
[33:23] means all pervading from vishnu's navl
[33:26] comes Brahma the Creator the world is
[33:29] all
[33:30] symbolic for people who can't understand
[33:33] philosophy directly I'm explaining to
[33:35] you the
[33:40] philos
[33:41] Brahma
[33:43] action and all other
[33:46] actions bind
[33:49] you make you agitated selfish actions
[33:53] create disharmony in
[33:55] society so out of all all actions come
[33:59] the highest actions sacrificial
[34:05] actions which produce the right mental
[34:11] climate for harmony
[34:14] production that's called food from yagna
[34:18] arises
[34:20] food see even in a in a factory all the
[34:24] workers have to work to produce the good
[34:27] each one can't have their own agenda
[34:30] they all have to work according to how
[34:32] the factory should work right that is
[34:34] yag
[34:36] relatively then there is
[34:38] production each worker does what they
[34:40] want how will they
[34:43] produce so yagna means the
[34:47] right the sacrificial action from yagna
[34:51] comes rain I'm sorry rain is the right
[34:54] mental climate
[34:59] of Cooperative Cooperative Endeavor and
[35:03] from that comes
[35:05] food life and from food comes
[35:09] life so he's tracing how from the
[35:12] reality comes life the
[35:16] being what it living
[35:20] beings so from Brahman you have become a
[35:25] living being so to get back to Brahman
[35:29] what do you have to
[35:31] do
[35:34] sacrifice you have to perform
[35:40] sacrifice that's what he says therefore
[35:42] the all pervading Brahman ever rests in
[35:46] yag
[35:49] sacrifice so in other words
[35:54] philosophically you are the
[35:56] Brahman you you have sacrificed that
[35:59] stupidly and
[36:02] become this mad
[36:05] [Music]
[36:06] person you look in the mirror you'll
[36:08] know what I'm talking about you've
[36:11] sacrificed your real
[36:14] identity incredible Divinity that we all
[36:17] are and become this limited
[36:21] powerless nothing nothing means nothing
[36:28] so how do we get back to
[36:32] Brahman you have to sacrifice this
[36:35] individual this ego egocentric desires
[36:39] you will reach
[36:40] self so it is sacrifice which is the
[36:45] pivot you sacrificed greatness you
[36:48] became this limited you sacrific limited
[36:51] you'll become
[36:55] great the problem is we don't sacrifice
[36:59] you are going along with this ego every
[37:02] day every
[37:03] moment I my I
[37:08] my I am this person these are my desires
[37:12] these are my children my my my family my
[37:16] I
[37:17] I where is the sacrifice what have you
[37:21] given up in life
[37:23] nothing nothing means nothing
[37:28] so you sacrifice means Giving
[37:33] Up So this beloved ego of yours has to
[37:37] be
[37:40] destroyed so in the Gita also and upas
[37:43] they call it death only when you die not
[37:46] physical death this ego dies do you get
[37:50] enlightened
[38:07] so sacrifice is
[38:19] everything so every thought every deed
[38:24] every action is
[38:26] I my
[38:28] and I can go on saying it but you will
[38:30] never give it
[38:32] up it's so deep it's so entrenched so
[38:35] you have to go deep inside and say
[38:41] no this self abnation is
[38:45] vant this renunciation of this little
[38:50] ego is vant nothing
[38:54] else and you assert what you really are
[38:58] which is the Divinity nothing short of
[39:04] it so do you look at yourself how do you
[39:07] look at yourself this is this is when
[39:11] knowledge will seep in when you are when
[39:13] you say no I'm not this person in the
[39:15] mirror I am the self you
[39:18] actually are convinced must get there
[39:31] so human minus ego egocentric desires
[39:34] equals God remember that that is the
[39:37] fundamental equation so what what are
[39:40] you what am I nothing but God the self
[39:44] covered by ego and egocentric
[39:48] desires that's it
[40:01] so this staggering
[40:04] truth vidanta has been crying out for
[40:07] thousands of years
[40:09] and in human history many people have
[40:12] realized this truth it's
[40:15] not it's not that is somebody declared
[40:18] it thousands of years
[40:20] ago so
[40:23] throughout history especially in India
[40:25] there have been
[40:29] every few decades these great Souls who
[40:32] come lift the society and
[40:45] leave
[40:50] yes you just said that you have to give
[40:53] up something what have you given up m
[40:57] but in the past you have said that you
[40:59] can never give up anything you can only
[41:01] take up something higher yes can you
[41:04] recile that yeah you're you're talking
[41:06] about how to do it you can't give up
[41:09] something unless you take up something
[41:11] higher that's what I'm saying you have
[41:13] to take up your real self only then can
[41:17] you give up this unreal self without
[41:19] that how can you do it both statements
[41:22] are
[41:23] true yes J
[41:28] har I'm not allowed okay har gam G so
[41:32] the last statement in um in the verse 15
[41:36] it says therefore all pervading Brahman
[41:38] Ever Rest in sacrifice would I be
[41:41] correct in understanding that it is
[41:43] established by sacrifice would that also
[41:46] mean the same thing no rests in the
[41:49] sense to achieve it you have to
[41:51] sacrifice so it lies in sacrifice he's
[41:55] giving the effect through the
[41:57] cause in other words if you sacrifice
[42:00] you'll get there that's what he's trying
[42:02] to say understood understood okay thank
[42:10] you so people misunderstand this verse
[42:13] from see they say in the Gita it says if
[42:15] you do yagya rain will come so they take
[42:18] it literally now now all of you have
[42:20] understood this is the
[42:23] Wheel from that Divinity you have come
[42:27] and to go back you have to follow the
[42:30] same
[42:36] principle says the you yourself
[42:41] have created yourself you yourself have
[42:45] to dissolve
[42:47] yourself has to be done by your own
[42:54] effort so prayer is only a reminder that
[42:58] you have to put in the effort prayer is
[43:00] not a beggary where you're begging for
[43:02] something give me this give me
[43:05] that or at least don't if you don't give
[43:07] me don't take away what I
[43:10] have don't Zend the tax fellow behind
[43:22] me 16
[43:51] he who does not follow here the wheel
[43:57] thus set in
[44:00] motion living in sin and rejoicing in
[44:04] the
[44:05] senses he lives in vain
[44:14] op so we talked about this wheel right
[44:18] of life from Yaga you have come here you
[44:22] have to go back through yagna through
[44:25] sacrifice that requires effort because
[44:29] all of us are addicted to this
[44:33] individuality and the desires coming out
[44:35] of it so it requires tremendous
[44:39] effort what is much easier is to live
[44:43] selfishly in sin you're
[44:46] agitated and you want the next sense
[44:49] enjoyment you live your whole life like
[44:53] that you ask a seven-year-old what do
[44:56] you want this weekend I'm going to play
[44:58] sports you ask a 70 year old what do
[45:01] they want this year we are going to
[45:05] bahas what they
[45:08] doing same
[45:11] thing you live your life for that next
[45:15] gratification that's what he
[45:17] says live in
[45:20] vain just get a
[45:22] temporary respite here and there but
[45:26] you're all the the time
[45:28] agitated until your death what kind of a
[45:31] life is that got to put in the
[45:35] effort once you stabilize it's nothing
[45:38] but bliss and Bliss you keep moving
[45:41] higher so
[45:43] don't destroy this incredible
[45:48] life live in
[45:51] vain ask yourself so many of you lived
[45:54] already half century has been it
[45:57] 60 70 50 40 what have you
[46:03] achieved what and for
[46:06] what so
[46:12] question so uh you know when I used to
[46:15] lecture in uh used to have the weekly
[46:18] talks right before Co and before we went
[46:22] online because we went online so many of
[46:24] you have a chance otherwise we had the
[46:26] group
[46:27] different places so I used to go in the
[46:29] evening to Manhattan for the lecture
[46:32] weekly
[46:34] talk and take the train in far more
[46:37] convenient obviously than
[46:40] driving uh so Pen Station and it was
[46:44] evening time right so I used to be
[46:46] walking
[46:47] up uh to go to the lecture and the whole
[46:51] sea of humanity coming down and one one
[46:54] one small line trying to are very
[46:57] difficult because it's like 6:00 in the
[46:59] evening whole lot is
[47:02] going and you should see whole lot so
[47:05] happy they leaving the office rushing to
[47:09] go
[47:10] home day after day you do that for what
[47:16] no clue what life
[47:19] is just waiting to go home and then
[47:22] fight there
[47:23] also then wait when you're home waiting
[47:26] to go to office start fighting
[47:31] their don't know what you're
[47:39] doing so the K says
[47:45] that if you realize the self in this
[47:48] life then is truth attained
[47:54] sat m if you don't realize the
[47:59] self colossal
[48:02] destruction most Supreme
[48:04] destruction puts it in double superl to
[48:08] emphasize what a waste of a
[48:12] life of this incredible
[48:16] opportunity for what next vacation
[48:29] many says we have life here is does that
[48:33] mean the state from the
[48:36] BR
[48:38] yes whe means from Brahman You' come
[48:41] here now from here you have to go back
[48:43] it's a circle it's a full circle that's
[48:46] the purpose of
[48:52] life see last night it
[48:55] snowed yeah and I was looking outside in
[48:58] the morning and you could see all the
[49:00] deer
[49:01] tracks in the
[49:05] backyard
[49:07] see whole night also they have suffer
[49:10] from that hunger all
[49:13] animals whole time they just satisfying
[49:16] that hunger that's what their life is
[49:18] whole day whole night night also they
[49:23] come you can't say can't they sleep for
[49:25] a little while at least
[49:29] so what does animal do it goes eats it
[49:32] feels satisfied for a while again that
[49:35] hunger comes again it goes and
[49:37] looks whole
[49:40] life then the urge comes to mate because
[49:43] they are the species has to continue
[49:44] they do that and that's it that's their
[49:46] life now what is so different what
[49:48] you're
[49:50] doing whatever desire comes in your mind
[49:53] you fulfill you feel little satisfied
[49:55] next desire comes
[49:57] whole life goes in
[49:59] that that's what he says living in
[50:04] vain so they have simple desires just
[50:07] food and this and that have different
[50:10] desires that's about all it's the same
[50:12] thing principle is the
[50:15] same but they can't think what am I
[50:18] doing all day all night eating
[50:21] grass life has to be more than that they
[50:23] can't think you can think
[50:28] no human being
[50:31] thinks job education for what job job
[50:35] for what to make a living they better
[50:38] than you because they can make a living
[50:39] without spending 20 years to educate
[50:42] themselves animals are far
[50:46] better they know how to make a living
[50:48] they don't need 20
[50:50] years they also make a living they also
[50:53] have children what are you doing which
[50:55] is so different
[50:59] can't
[51:02] understand so
[51:04] think what is my life all about I'm not
[51:07] going to live in
[51:10] vain Yes you heard something no yes the
[51:14] wheel of Wheel of Life huh
[51:19] Andrea yeah um so I had a question uh
[51:23] just to clarify some of the questions
[51:25] that came up earlier it's sounds like we
[51:27] should just not get attached to the
[51:28] fruit or the outcome of the you know
[51:31] desire the um the activity so like not
[51:34] seek out or dictate the outcome but and
[51:37] and just tell me if that's not the
[51:38] correct understanding but that's what I
[51:40] took from it and then the second part is
[51:43] so if that's the case and we we
[51:45] shouldn't get attached how do we plan
[51:46] things like you know maybe we we do plan
[51:50] a vacation or something it just it kind
[51:53] of seems counter counter
[51:56] against each other you know if we're not
[51:58] getting attached but then we still have
[51:59] to plan things
[52:02] yeah see what vidanta is saying is of
[52:05] course you have to plan you have to
[52:08] program your life not just particular
[52:11] activities but the planning and
[52:13] programming should be done with an
[52:15] intellect not just a craving of the mind
[52:19] so with your intellect you plan and
[52:21] program what you want to achieve in
[52:24] life and with these with with this
[52:27] knowledge the goal will always be a
[52:30] higher purpose beyond your selfish
[52:32] interest that's what it means not to get
[52:35] attached if you're selfish that is
[52:38] attachment I want to get that for myself
[52:41] you understand so after planning and
[52:45] programming you focus on the action to
[52:48] get you there while you're acting why
[52:51] are you anxious about the fruit that's
[52:54] what it means you must exit Ute the
[52:57] action if you see a person who wants to
[53:00] do well in his exam he should study not
[53:03] worry about whether he's going to do
[53:05] well or not right that spoils the
[53:07] current Act of studying it destroys
[53:11] everything so with the intellect set a
[53:14] higher purpose and get on to the action
[53:17] that is ideal
[53:19] living now the Mind craves for a selfish
[53:22] fruit and you're all the time anxious
[53:25] about it and that produces agitation now
[53:29] and impedes your performance you see so
[53:32] it's totally opposed to what he's
[53:34] saying CLE great thank
[53:38] you yes
[53:42] VI G um I just had a question about
[53:46] selfrealization would you be explain uh
[53:48] like in short in short no I can't
[53:51] explain in short so this we can take up
[53:55] uh in the Wednesday Q&A why don't you
[53:57] send in the question then here we'll
[53:59] take up directly related to the topic at
[54:03] handra you had
[54:06] something yes gam G for your example
[54:08] that you gave about the Sea of humanity
[54:11] Pen Station um what's wrong with that
[54:14] I'm assuming you're referring to just
[54:16] crowds over there not everyone can do a
[54:19] remote job wrong with what you didn't
[54:21] you didn't hear what I said that they
[54:22] don't understand what life is you're
[54:25] mechanically living like an animal
[54:27] there's no higher
[54:29] purpose what more you want me to expl
[54:31] you can't goam G you can't the way I'm
[54:33] thinking and please correct me I'm 100%
[54:35] sure I'm wrong um the you can't pour
[54:38] from an empty cup so you have to you've
[54:41] given that example before take care of
[54:43] yourself first your Des you not
[54:45] understood anything what I have said I'm
[54:48] not saying you should not go to work see
[54:50] you're equating me saying that no don't
[54:53] go to work did I say that whole thing
[54:55] I've been
[54:57] bursting my lung saying do what you have
[54:59] to do but you must think and have a
[55:01] higher purpose in life not mechanically
[55:04] do it just for yourself that's
[55:07] all that doesn't mean don't come you to
[55:10] work please you'll be unemployed I'll be
[55:12] in trouble you come and sit
[55:15] here please don't do that
[55:18] vikam go there's a question from Bal
[55:22] it's a followup to how do you work in a
[55:24] selfless manner in a selfish environment
[55:28] you don't worry about your environment
[55:30] you worry about
[55:31] yourself your attitude should be to
[55:35] serve doctor's attitude should be to
[55:38] serve the patients to try and help them
[55:41] now why you worried the patient is a
[55:43] very selfish fellow what does that have
[55:45] to do with
[55:47] you you work your attitude should be to
[55:51] help so don't worry about environment
[55:54] when was the environment not selfish
[55:57] you can only change your mind not others
[56:01] so you be clear and you focus on the
[56:04] higher forget about the rest let them
[56:07] live their
[56:10] life so yesterday I was saying before we
[56:13] end we had I had a couple of interesting
[56:17] interviews one was um with
[56:22] the entrepreneurs podcast which they
[56:25] talked about about how vidanta can help
[56:28] in the corporate world so it went well
[56:31] the it was a video podcast so we'll send
[56:34] you the link to that it is something
[56:37] useful to share you know people don't
[56:39] understand vanta directly but these
[56:42] means they may relate to so it's part of
[56:44] our work to get the word
[56:48] out and the second
[56:54] was vidanta and M mental health which
[56:57] came in Psychology today which is a
[57:00] reputed
[57:01] publication um they interviewed me as
[57:04] well uh that's a three-part Series so
[57:07] the first part is out and uh we will
[57:10] send it to you
[57:14] right on uh on our WhatsApp group so if
[57:18] you're not on there just email um our
[57:22] email address to have you added if you
[57:24] missed the email earlier and then you
[57:26] can easily forward it to whoever you
[57:28] want your groups and circles or whatever
[57:31] that will help right so any other
[57:34] questions email them we'll take them on
[57:36] Wednesday otherwise we'll meet next
[57:39] weekend
[57:41] [Music]
