[00:07] See this, we all know who she is, right? If you don't, where have you been for the past 10 years?
[00:12] Kylie Jenner is one of the thousands of examples about how everything we see in social media is not the reality.
[00:17] I have to add that I do not have anything against her or any other social media influencer or the character they create around them.
[00:24] We're gonna make our lives seem as if they're all put together and perfect and it's pretty cheap.
[00:28] A Pixar Pro subscription costs about 5 euros a month.
[00:32] A liposuction on the other hand goes from 2,000 to 6,000.
[00:39] And a team subscription is about 10 euros a week.
[00:40] Seeing this range of prices, Photoshop is the cheapest, but it is also the most dangerous.
[00:46] Every time we post a picture, it takes seconds to reach the internet.
[00:49] It's the quickest way for people to see us, to take a look inside their lives.
[00:53] Now, I'm not talking about Photoshop only.
[00:55] There are tons of factors found in social media that affects people's self-esteem.
[01:00] Self-esteem. Not everything is what it seems. I'm sure.
[01:02] Not everything is what it seems. I'm sure we've all heard this and as you grow up.
[01:04] We've all heard this and as you grow up you realize how real this is. Not only
[01:06] You realize how real this is not only based around social media but also on
[01:08] Based around social media but also on other aspects of your daily life.
[01:10] Other aspects of your daily life. As of today Kylie has 281 million
[01:13] As of today Kylie has 281 million followers on Instagram only.
[01:16] Followers on Instagram only. This shows the great power she holds in
[01:18] This shows the great power she holds in the social media world.
[01:21] It does not seem important but when you
[01:22] It does not seem important but when you see a photo like that one the first idea
[01:24] See a photo like that one the first idea that pops into our mind is I wish it was
[01:27] That pops into our mind is I wish it was me.
[01:28] Me. This really affects our mental health.
[01:30] This really affects our mental health because when you when you're when you're
[01:32] Because when you when you're when you're your teenage years you are developing
[01:34] Your own personality your own hobbies.
[01:36] Your own personality your own hobbies and you're dealing with things such as
[01:37] And you're dealing with things such as school at the same time as your own mind.
[01:39] School at the same time as your own mind. When you're my age it seems as if the
[01:41] When you're my age it seems as if the most important thing in the world is
[01:42] Most important thing in the world is having lots of followers on social media.
[01:44] Having lots of followers on social media and being known by others or else you
[01:46] And being known by others or else you might feel rejected by society.
[01:50] Might feel rejected by society. Sometimes we can be our own worst
[01:51] Sometimes we can be our own worst enemies.
[01:53] Enemies. Because how many times have you chosen
[01:54] Because how many times have you chosen what you post.
[01:56] What you post. I'm sure you will never post a photo of
[01:58] I'm sure you will never post a photo of you crying or being dramatic on social
[01:59] You crying or being dramatic on social media since it might give a bad image of
[02:01] media since it might give a bad image of you.
[02:02] you this is what a lot of people do they.
[02:04] this is what a lot of people do they choose what they post to make it seem as.
[02:06] choose what they post to make it seem as if their life is absolutely perfect to.
[02:08] if their life is absolutely perfect to seem as if they don't have any worries.
[02:10] seem as if they don't have any worries when in reality we are all fighting our.
[02:12] when in reality we are all fighting our own battles.
[02:13] own battles this is called.
[02:14] this is called selective posting.
[02:16] selective posting it's like when you take a photo of.
[02:17] it's like when you take a photo of yourself and end up taking 70 photos.
[02:20] yourself and end up taking 70 photos you're not going to look your best in.
[02:21] you're not going to look your best in all of them so you decide to go through.
[02:23] all of them so you decide to go through them and search for the ones you look.
[02:24] them and search for the ones you look the happiest prettiest and often the.
[02:27] the happiest prettiest and often the skinniest one.
[02:28] skinniest one yes come at me as if it's not true how.
[02:30] yes come at me as if it's not true how many times have you looked at that photo.
[02:32] many times have you looked at that photo and thought.
[02:33] and thought i look really skinny in this let me post.
[02:35] i look really skinny in this let me post it believe it or not this is what is.
[02:37] it believe it or not this is what is marking our own beauty standards and we.
[02:39] marking our own beauty standards and we have to stop this.
[02:42] have to stop this influencers are paid to show how.
[02:44] influencers are paid to show how magnificent some products are.
[02:45] magnificent some products are but have you been in a situation when.
[02:47] but have you been in a situation when you for instance or just something on.
[02:49] you for instance or just something on the internet and when you receive it is.
[02:51] the internet and when you receive it is the exact opposite of what you thought.
[02:53] the exact opposite of what you thought it was.
[02:53] it was i've been there tons of times and i know.
[02:55] i've been there tons of times and i know what it feels like we cannot assume that.
[02:57] what it feels like we cannot assume that everything we see in instagram is the.
[02:59] everything we see in instagram is the reality but rather what we want to see.
[03:01] reality but rather what we want to see so let's be more critical next time.
[03:03] so let's be more critical next time we're scrolling through instagram.
[03:09] wait.
[03:11] wait we fool ourselves because we're the.
[03:12] we fool ourselves because we're the first ones doing those things such as.
[03:14] first ones doing those things such as choosing what we post and then we're the.
[03:16] choosing what we post and then we're the first ones.
[03:17] first ones that let ourselves fall in the lives of.
[03:19] that let ourselves fall in the lives of others thinking that what they are doing.
[03:21] others thinking that what they are doing is much better than what we are.
[03:24] is much better than what we are okay i think it's enough beef towards.
[03:25] okay i think it's enough beef towards kylie for today.
[03:27] kylie for today let's talk about other social media.
[03:28] let's talk about other social media influencers.
[03:30] influencers i did a sort of experiment i went on the.
[03:32] i did a sort of experiment i went on the inter internet and i searched up.
[03:35] inter internet and i searched up in.
[03:36] in influencers.
[03:37] influencers these are the images i got.
[03:43] i know now you may be thinking that this.
[03:45] i know now you may be thinking that this is extremely toxic but when you see.
[03:47] is extremely toxic but when you see these photos on your expert page on.
[03:48] these photos on your expert page on instagram you really think i wish i.
[03:50] instagram you really think i wish i looked like this.
[03:54] it's incredible that some of them are.
[03:55] it's incredible that some of them are billionaires and it's all because of us.
[03:58] billionaires and it's all because of us why may you be questioning well were the.
[04:00] why may you be questioning well were the ones liking and commenting on their post.
[04:01] ones liking and commenting on their post of their perfect dresses marvelous trips.
[04:04] of their perfect dresses marvelous trips and perfect diets and at the end of the day thanks to us feeling miserable about ourselves.
[04:07] they are living their best lives this is incredible to say but think about it.
[04:11] do you know how much money they're gaining from our likes and comments on instagram.
[04:15] there are people making a living out of this.
[04:19] see we are a pretty hypocritical society.
[04:21] we are the first ones who say oh influencers don't deserve the money they have or they didn't work for this fortune.
[04:26] and then we're the ones liking and commenting on their posts.
[04:29] we feed them without us some of them wouldn't have anything.
[04:35] so what do they do with this money you may be questioning yourself.
[04:37] well one of the things that most influencers do when they gain this tremendous amount of money is plastic surgeries.
[04:43] how do you think they have that hourglass body and porcelain face.
[04:45] photoshop is not the only way out of making yourself look different.
[04:49] you know photoshop is temporary in a way whereas plastic surgery is changing yourself forever.
[04:57] i can understand that being exposed to more people on social media can make you more insecure since more people are
[05:03] more insecure since more people are pointing scars about you.
[05:04] pointing scars about you but there's people that start modifying.
[05:06] but there's people that start modifying their body so they can create this.
[05:07] their body so they can create this perfect beauty standard we live around.
[05:09] perfect beauty standard we live around and they do so they definitely do so.
[05:12] and they do so they definitely do so they manage to set up beauty standards.
[05:13] they manage to set up beauty standards at colossal levels and at the end of the.
[05:15] at colossal levels and at the end of the day we imagine these images that are.
[05:17] day we imagine these images that are impossible to achieve without their help.
[05:20] impossible to achieve without their help and we think that this is how we should.
[05:22] and we think that this is how we should look like but no it's impossible to look.
[05:24] look like but no it's impossible to look like this.
[05:26] like this there's another important factor that.
[05:27] there's another important factor that people tend to skip when talking about.
[05:29] people tend to skip when talking about bodies and that's genetics.
[05:32] bodies and that's genetics people may have a genetic who.
[05:34] people may have a genetic who makes them gain more weight than usual.
[05:35] makes them gain more weight than usual or gain weight at a slower pace and.
[05:37] or gain weight at a slower pace and that's totally fine the thing is we have.
[05:39] that's totally fine the thing is we have to start normalizing this.
[05:42] to start normalizing this i'm sure we've all talked to someone who.
[05:44] i'm sure we've all talked to someone who we want to look like for instance they.
[05:45] we want to look like for instance they have blue eyes or they're taller than.
[05:47] have blue eyes or they're taller than you.
[05:47] you and they want to look the exact opposite.
[05:50] and they want to look the exact opposite let's use me as an example i have a.
[05:52] let's use me as an example i have a friend who is quite short and is really.
[05:54] friend who is quite short and is really skinny and she always tells me how she.
[05:57] skinny and she always tells me how she would kill to gain a few.
[05:59] would kill to gain a few pounds away and inches.
[06:02] pounds away and inches even if you gain weight or lose weight.
[06:04] even if you gain weight or lose weight people are still going to comment on your looks
[06:07] so the best way so the best thing is to be comfortable in your own skin
[06:10] because at the end of the day you will always have people commenting on your appearance
[06:14] now i'm going to need your help
[06:16] think about the perfect person for you or even better for society
[06:20] you can come in with the ones on your side
[06:31] okay i know the word person can have various meanings for different people
[06:34] but when we think about being perfect don't we all get the image of that blue-eyed blonde who is chronically skinny and has perspective
[06:42] society or may i say us have created this beauty standard and we directly preach that if you do not look like this you're not considered beautiful
[06:50] when you're in your teenage years you really care about other people's opinions and that's normal
[06:55] but if you are too this that you're not considered beautiful because your eyes are not a certain color imagine how bad you can feel because of that
[07:03] um these are not seem important but
[07:05] um these are not seem important but trust me when you're living a situation
[07:07] trust me when you're living a situation when you for instance see a mother on a
[07:09] when you for instance see a mother on a magazine your self-esteem will slowly
[07:11] magazine your self-esteem will slowly decrease to the point where you will not
[07:13] decrease to the point where you will not feel beautiful without any makeup on so
[07:17] feel beautiful without any makeup on so now you may be asking yourself okay what
[07:18] now you may be asking yourself okay what can i do to stop this problem well first
[07:21] can i do to stop this problem well first you have to admit that this is a current
[07:22] you have to admit that this is a current problem in the world and then we can
[07:23] problem in the world and then we can find solutions
[07:25] find solutions simple things because
[07:27] simple things because simple things as stopping and thinking
[07:29] simple things as stopping and thinking before moaning about how you don't like
[07:31] before moaning about how you don't like how you look in address because you saw
[07:33] how you look in address because you saw someone on instagram wait and they look
[07:35] someone on instagram wait and they look better than you as i've mentioned before
[07:37] better than you as i've mentioned before photoshop is real now don't get me wrong
[07:40] photoshop is real now don't get me wrong i'm not saying that everyone in the
[07:41] i'm not saying that everyone in the internet uses photoshop but there's
[07:43] internet uses photoshop but there's certain body types you can't achieve
[07:44] certain body types you can't achieve without the help of it
[07:46] without the help of it as a society we have to stop
[07:49] as a society we have to stop promoting this movement about making
[07:50] promoting this movement about making people believe that your life is perfect
[07:53] people believe that your life is perfect stop
[07:54] stop think and act
[07:57] think and act these three words can really change the
[07:58] these three words can really change the world because you would stop posting
[08:01] world because you would stop posting things on social media you know people
[08:02] things on social media you know people can misinterpret
[08:04] can misinterpret you would think about what you have in
[08:06] you would think about what you have in front of your eyes ask yourself do i really think i can look like this and maybe you can if you feel about insecure about your body you can start standing up for the gym but there's certain things about your appearance that you can't change
[08:19] you can also think about that one person we all know who we think their life is perfect and if you start to think deeper you will realize everyone has problems going on in their lives but they never post them on social media why would they it's not cute
[08:32] and then you will act but act against this toxic movement about making people believe that your life is perfect if you're a victim of believing everything in social media then stop being the cause of disbelief
[08:44] social medias are great source of entertainment i use them you use them we all use them but what if we use the power they hold to spread the positivity the world needs these days
[08:57] we should start being more real in social media so all of our great moments but also are not so great ones because that way we will know what kind of presence we are because behind the
[09:07] Presence we are because behind the screen everything is so much easier.
[09:09] Screen everything is so much easier.
[09:09] Thank you for listening to my TED talk.
