[00:00] Hey everyone, welcome to the Union FC uh preseason meeting for May 2026.
[00:06] This will be for any referees that are doing our house league this year.
[00:10] Uh what I'll do first is I'll pop myself on the screen so you know what I look like if you see me at the field.
[00:17] So uh that's me.
[00:19] Uh I'll be taking myself off the screen now so I don't cover up any words or anything.
[00:24] But uh yeah, this is what I look like.
[00:26] Okay.
[00:26] All right.
[00:26] Let's get back to the screen here.
[00:29] All right.
[00:29] So, I'll go over a couple things here about me because, you know, if I want to know about you, you should know about me.
[00:34] I live in New Market.
[00:34] I work for YP as an auditor.
[00:37] I'm not a police officer.
[00:40] Um, I have three sons.
[00:40] I have a seven-year-old and two 5-year-olds.
[00:44] The 5-year-olds will be playing in our house league on Monday.
[00:45] So, uh, watch out for them.
[00:49] Uh, I've been a referee for 27 years, uh, since I was 14.
[00:53] So, you can work out how old I am.
[00:55] Uh I'm currently a level seven uh aka district referee within
[01:00] seven uh aka district referee within York Regional uh soccer association.
[01:03] York Regional uh soccer association. So that means I have to do a fitness test.
[01:05] that means I have to do a fitness test.
[01:07] I have to get assessed every year. Um yeah, fun stuff, right?
[01:10] Uh it's my third year as the head referee of Union FC.
[01:13] year as the head referee of Union FC.
[01:15] And uh if you want to know one thing about me, it's that I believe in referees that keep showing up and have the right attitude.
[01:16] about me, it's that I believe in referees that keep showing up and have the right attitude.
[01:18] So, if you show up and and have a smile on your face and say, "I want to do my best today and uh I want to do what the game deserves," uh I'm going to be happy with you.
[01:20] the right attitude. So, if you show up and and have a smile on your face and say, "I want to do my best today and uh I want to do what the game deserves," uh I'm going to be happy with you.
[01:22] say, "I want to do my best today and uh I want to do what the game deserves," uh I'm going to be happy with you.
[01:25] I want to do what the game deserves," uh I'm going to be happy with you.
[01:28] Okay? All right. Um so, I'll show you my sons.
[01:30] I'm going to be happy with you. Okay?
[01:32] All right. Um so, I'll show you my sons. You know what they look like.
[01:34] You know what they look like. Uh these uh twins here.
[01:37] Uh yeah, you'll see them on the fields. Uh my older one plays in uh a different soccer league with his friends, but uh yeah, these two uh keep an eye out for them.
[01:41] on the fields. Uh my older one plays in uh a different soccer league with his friends, but uh yeah, these two uh keep an eye out for them.
[01:43] uh a different soccer league with his friends, but uh yeah, these two uh keep an eye out for them.
[01:46] friends, but uh yeah, these two uh keep an eye out for them.
[01:48] an eye out for them. All right. So, I want to bring you over to the uh a couple of the uh slides that were given to the uh coaches.
[01:50] want to bring you over to the uh a couple of the uh slides that were given to the uh coaches.
[01:53] So, one second here. Okay.
[01:57] to the uh coaches. So, one second here.
[01:59] Okay. So, I'm going to go over uh some of the slides that the coaches saw a
[02:01] of the slides that the coaches saw a couple days ago for the coaches meeting.
[02:03] couple days ago for the coaches meeting.
[02:05] Uh that way they know exactly the same thing that you do in the same presentation.
[02:10] So, for recreational side of things for their house league, we have uh Junk Carlo Galuto.
[02:11] He's the uh sort of the head of the operation uh scheduler, things of that nature.
[02:17] So uh it's a good name to know.
[02:20] Uh Damiano Marangelo is the technical coordinator.
[02:23] He is more to do with the uh the training on Wednesdays, the recreational training.
[02:30] So we don't worry about that as referees.
[02:31] Uh Christopher Alban is the intern for the recreational side of things.
[02:35] He'll be at the field every single time.
[02:37] Uh so if you're need a point of contact or somebody to ask a question to he'll be there then uh this is me.
[02:47] I will not be at the field every session.
[02:49] Uh like I said I live in New Market.
[02:51] I have my own kids.
[02:53] I have my own games to referee.
[02:55] I have my own games to play.
[02:57] So I'll be there every so often.
[03:00] Probably on Mondays.
[03:00] Um so if you want to get a hold of me, probably
[03:02] want to get a hold of me, probably Mondays is the time to do it.
[03:05] Mondays is the time to do it.
[03:05] Okay.
[03:07] Um our mission statement for the club is to essentially promote uh you know a pathway for talented individuals and that includes referees.
[03:17] So if you really enjoy referees refereeing and you have a passion for it and you want to progress uh our club is commit to that as well and I'll point you in the right direction if uh you want to pursue refereeing as um you know just being beyond even host league u whether it's IM model or OSL uh there's other places to go with refereeing we are in desperate needs of referee in Canada so uh Yeah, if that's your passion, then uh we'll support you all the way.
[03:52] Uh recreational program is the foundation of our club.
[03:54] Uh everybody who's played soccer, you know, whether it's in the World Cup or OSL, CPL, they all started in house league.
[04:03] CPL, they all started in house league essentially.
[04:05] So, this is where the uh essentially.
[04:05] So, this is where the uh the game uh grows and where it starts for everybody who plays.
[04:11] And uh we want to keep it as open and uh low pressure as possible.
[04:13] And that means uh referees as well.
[04:16] So uh there shouldn't be any pressure on you from the fans to like yelling at you or anything like that.
[04:24] We'll touch on that in a second.
[04:26] Uh but yeah, it's supposed to be a fun spot for everybody.
[04:28] Uh so essentially our goals, and this includes you as well, is to have fun, learn your foundational skills, foster love for the game, and make friends.
[04:39] So maybe not make as much friends with the uh players as the players do with them with each other, but uh you know, make connections, right?
[04:45] Have fun.
[04:48] Uh okay, so there's a bunch of kids in Canada that play Timbits soccer.
[04:54] So Timbits is U58.
[04:54] Uh McDonald's is a bit of the older groups.
[05:01] So you'll see the different um sponsorships on those uniforms.
[05:05] sponsorships on those uniforms.
[05:05] Uh the code of contact for the club.
[05:06] Uh the code of contact for the club.
[05:06] This is a big thing to know.
[05:08] Uh we have zero tolerance for any form of abuse,
[05:11] zero tolerance for any form of abuse, physical, verbal, towards any player,
[05:14] physical, verbal, towards any player, coach, official, or staff member.
[05:16] Uh coach, official, or staff member.
[05:16] Uh people get a single warning and if they're spoken to again, they're out for the rest of the season, and you don't start the play again until that person leaves uh the area to keep it safe.
[05:18] people get a single warning and if they're spoken to again, they're out for the rest of the season, and you don't start the play again until that person leaves uh the area to keep it safe.
[05:20] they're spoken to again, they're out for the rest of the season, and you don't start the play again until that person leaves uh the area to keep it safe.
[05:22] the rest of the season, and you don't start the play again until that person leaves uh the area to keep it safe.
[05:24] start the play again until that person leaves uh the area to keep it safe.
[05:28] leaves uh the area to keep it safe.
[05:28] All right.
[05:28] Uh spectators should be on the opposite side of the field as the uh players benches and no one's supposed to be behind the nuts either.
[05:30] right. Uh spectators should be on the opposite side of the field as the uh players benches and no one's supposed to be behind the nuts either.
[05:32] opposite side of the field as the uh players benches and no one's supposed to be behind the nuts either.
[05:35] players benches and no one's supposed to be behind the nuts either.
[05:35] Uh coaching, you know, little Johnny to be a goalkeeper.
[05:39] be behind the nuts either.
[05:39] Uh coaching, you know, little Johnny to be a goalkeeper.
[05:41] you know, little Johnny to be a goalkeeper.
[05:41] That's meant to be for the coaches to do.
[05:44] goalkeeper. That's meant to be for the coaches to do.
[05:44] Uh we don't need any uh back seat uh or sideline coaches, right?
[05:47] coaches to do. Uh we don't need any uh back seat uh or sideline coaches, right?
[05:52] back seat uh or sideline coaches, right?
[05:52] All right.
[05:54] All right. Um script over this training part here.
[05:56] script over this training part here.
[05:56] Other than this, this is where our games will all happen at Henderson Park.
[05:58] Other than this, this is where our games will all happen at Henderson Park.
[06:02] will all happen at Henderson Park.
[06:02] Um, it is on line nine.
[06:02] If you're familiar with Bradford
[06:04] it is on line nine. If you're familiar with Bradford
[06:06] with Bradford line or side line, side road 10 is over.
[06:09] line or side line, side road 10 is over here.
[06:12] So, um, it's not too far off side uh, side road 10.
[06:17] Turn left onto line nine if you're going north and then, uh, it's right there.
[06:20] So, we're going to be on these fields here at all times.
[06:25] All right, forget about the training plan here, but we'll go here.
[06:30] Uh, so when players are at the field, um, they're supposed to be wearing their Union FC uniform.
[06:37] They can have either soccer cleat on or suitable footwear and then they must wear shin pads at all times.
[06:45] Um, if they choose to wear a hat, uh, that's okay.
[06:49] Um, some clubs don't allow that, but in our case, we don't allow head balls, um, in our game.
[06:54] So, wearing a hat's not really a big deal.
[06:58] Uh, this won't there won't be any discussion about rules in this video.
[07:04] That'll come out later.
[07:06] Um, Jean Carlo and Chris are still working on formalizing those and putting them in a
[07:07] formalizing those and putting them in a format where it's easy to read and easy to understand.
[07:13] So, keep an eye out for that a bit later.
[07:16] Okay.
[07:19] Uh, you should be wearing I I'll touch on what you should wear later.
[07:22] Okay.
[07:26] Um, okay. Let's go here.
[07:27] So, the It's good to give you an overview of how the league's supposed to go this year for house league.
[07:30] That way you understand how things work.
[07:33] So, we're doing a World Cup of house league uh this year.
[07:35] So, every team will have a country they're representing.
[07:39] Um, so for example, my sons are on Argentina for the uh U5 U6 league.
[07:47] Very exciting.
[07:49] Uh, so players are supposed to have Yep. their jersey socks and shorts, have their suitable footwear, and then of course their shampads.
[07:55] They must wear shin pads.
[07:58] If they don't have shiny pads on, they can't play.
[08:00] All right.
[08:03] Um, so this is what you want to know about the uh different age groups.
[08:05] Um, and I'll
[08:09] uh different age groups.
[08:12] Um, and I'll have that in the schedule itself of what have that in the schedule itself of what the duration of the game supposed to be.
[08:14] the duration of the game supposed to be.
[08:16] So, don't worry about that just yet.
[08:20] Um, same with this.
[08:21] I wouldn't worry too much about the structure of the games or anything just yet.
[08:26] We'll touch on that at a later date in the group chat.
[08:28] All right, this is what you do care about.
[08:30] So, Mondays and Tuesdays will be our youngest age groups.
[08:35] Wednesdays will be for training.
[08:36] So, there won't be any games for host league on Wednesdays.
[08:38] Then, Thursday and Friday will be the older age groups.
[08:39] So, if you are more inclined to referee older age groups, then Thursdays and Fridays will be your time.
[08:50] If you're more into the um referring the younger age groups, Mondays and Tuesdays will be uh your time to shine.
[08:56] Okay?
[08:57] And there's more likely to be more games on Mondays and Tuesdays.
[09:02] Uh just given the uh you know, number of kids we have signed up for these divisions.
[09:06] But if you're looking for a challenge, Thursdays and Fridays are is your time to shine.
[09:10] Are is your time to shine. All right.
[09:12] Uh we're too worried too much about the formations.
[09:14] That's not our jurisdiction.
[09:17] Uh rules of the game.
[09:20] Uh the goalies must have a different color shirt on or penny than the players.
[09:22] If the referee doesn't show up, then a coach does the game.
[09:25] As soon as you show up, if you are the referees for the game, you take over from the coach.
[09:28] Um yeah, make sure the coaches are close to their bench.
[09:34] If it's younger age group, uh there's more need for them on the field, so there's not to be too much trouble with that.
[09:38] But if it's U1, U12 or 134, the coach should be on the sideline and not uh uh roaming down the sideline, right?
[09:40] It should be near the bench.
[09:42] Uh no one behind the nets are on the goal line for fans.
[09:44] Talked about that before.
[09:46] Um yeah, we'll go over the rules in a different time.
[09:50] There's some different uh alterations to what is written here.
[09:51] Okay, coaches, don't worry about that.
[10:13] Okay, coaches, don't worry about that.
[10:13] Don't worry about that too much.
[10:15] I do have my own slides here.
[10:16] I just thought I'd go over this one.
[10:18] All right.
[10:18] Uh weather information.
[10:20] If there is uh light rain, the game will continue.
[10:23] If there's heavy rain, there is a chance that the game will be cancelled.
[10:27] So, we'll keep an eye out on the group chat.
[10:28] If uh things change, uh if there's extreme heat, 35 degrees Celsius plus, uh there's a chance the game will be cancelled.
[10:36] And if there is thunder and lightning, the game will be cancelled.
[10:40] Okay.
[10:40] Uh player safety is always the main priority.
[10:42] If someone's injured on the field, uh stop the game right away.
[10:45] We are in host league.
[10:48] Um yeah, get get them help as soon as they need it.
[10:50] Okay.
[10:50] All right.
[10:50] Let's go back to my slides here.
[10:56] Don't worry about that.
[10:58] Okay.
[10:58] So, let's go back to my slides.
[11:01] All right.
[11:01] So, yeah, there's my boys.
[11:03] Uh make this bigger again, I think, if I can.
[11:08] All right.
[11:08] So, let's get to my slides here.
[11:10] So, expectations of you.
[11:10] I want you to arrive at the field five minutes
[11:14] you to arrive at the field five minutes before the game, dressed in your attire.
[11:17] before the game, dressed in your attire.
[11:17] You can change your shoes at the field, but uh you want to look professional
[11:20] but uh you want to look professional from the moment you are visible to the players, the coaches, the spectators.
[11:25] I want you to be familiar with the rules of the game, which again I'll be sending uh once they're finalized by Jean Carlo and Chris.
[11:35] be a mentor on the field for the players, which means that especially for the younger groups, tell them where to put the ball.
[11:41] Uh don't be such a stickler on the rules.
[11:44] We're there to have them have fun and uh keep the game flowing.
[11:49] So, uh no one's really worried about the score of a U6 game.
[11:52] They want to know their kid uh had a part to play and uh had fun.
[11:59] So, uh look the part.
[11:59] I talked about that at the top here.
[12:01] Show up to the field in your uh proper clothes.
[12:05] Uh wear your referee kit with your badge.
[12:07] Uh pull your referee socks up.
[12:09] I don't want to see anybody's socks around their ankles.
[12:11] Uh tuck your shirt in.
[12:14] their ankles.
[12:14] Uh tuck your shirt in.
[12:16] And uh the Union NFC staff at the field will uh the Union NFC staff at the field will be struck or strict on this component.
[12:18] be struck or strict on this component.
[12:18] Um yeah, it's a job.
[12:22] Look the part and uh yeah, a lot of you are trained.
[12:24] Actually, all of you are trained.
[12:26] If you're taking the course, you know what you're supposed to do.
[12:27] Let's get it done, right?
[12:29] How do you get game offers?
[12:31] This is probably what you're most interested in.
[12:33] Um, it's very similar to what you saw in the uh in the group chat from the winter.
[12:35] I put a poll of uh a time slot and a date and you just click in the poll when you're available.
[12:36] Um uh and Wednesdays prior to the start of uh twoe period uh where you'll be scheduled I will close the poll and by that Friday I will put out the schedule you see here with um you know the the time that you are supposed to start the game the field uh the person that's refereeing the game and if it's
[13:14] That's refereeing the game and if it's two times 20 minute game at the two times 20 minute game at the fiveminute halftime.
[13:18] That'll be right in there.
[13:21] Okay.
[13:21] And then uh there will be the date of the game, of course.
[13:25] Uh so the yeah, I do it two weeks at a time because if I did this every week, we'd have non-stop polls.
[13:32] Um so that's why it's done that way.
[13:34] I know that things change with schedules and what have you, but um you know, try and get your uh I don't say life in order, but get your schedule in order at least two weeks at a time and two weeks in advance so that uh we don't have to make too many changes after the fact to the uh the schedule.
[13:52] Uh how you get game offers continued.
[13:54] Um if you receive a game offer and can't do it anymore, please let me know.
[13:56] Don't just switch with somebody else.
[13:58] uh you get paid based off of the records that I keep.
[14:02] So if you tell me or sorry if you don't tell me that something's changed, I'm going to pay the person that had the game initially and if you were the person that takes over that game, uh you're going to be short money, right?
[14:15] you're going to be short money, right?
[14:17] Uh please give me time enough notice to find someone to cut or replace you for the game.
[14:21] Don't tell me five minutes before the game you can't make it.
[14:23] um that's not good for anybody and we don't want any vacant games uh or any vacant fields at the uh for the host league, right?
[14:31] Uh I will post in the WhatsApp group the vacancy to try and find a replacement for the game.
[14:39] Again, uh we want every field covered um for great customer service, right?
[14:45] And uh I know a number of you are looking to make some money, which is one of the motivators of being a referee.
[14:51] So, yeah, let's uh try and get all the games covered and uh make some people uh some money, right?
[14:58] Okay. Uh licensed referees and game leaders.
[15:03] So, uh this year I want everyone to be licensed if possible, and we did a great job with that.
[15:11] We have 20 referees as of the time recording this who are fully licensed uh through Ontario Soccer and
[15:15] licensed uh through Ontario Soccer and have committed to refereeing our host league this season.
[15:19] um 20 referees might not be enough uh especially in the summer months when people are on vacation and have other practices and games.
[15:27] So there are several people who weren't able to get into a course but still want to referee.
[15:32] Uh they will be known as game leaders.
[15:34] The priority is always to get our referees, the licensed referees the games, but if there are vacancies, the game leaders will fill in for those as a on an as needed basis.
[15:46] uh and we'll likely cover the youngest game.
[15:49] So, uh it doesn't probably take a very highly trained referee to do U5 or six U5 U5 or U6 game.
[16:00] Um so, it's more just hurting cats at that point.
[16:02] So, that's kind of where I'll use the game leaders.
[16:04] And, uh yeah, you want to have a referee at every game, like I've said multiple times already.
[16:13] All right. uh match fees and getting
[16:16] All right.
[16:16] uh match fees and getting paid.
[16:17] So, we are still figuring out the paid.
[16:17] So, we are still figuring out the exact match official fees for each age group, but the minimum will be $25 a game.
[16:22] Older age groups will be a little bit more uh per game because to get paid the same for a U6 and U14 game um probably doesn't make the most sense, does it?
[16:33] Uh you will get paid on a monthly basis via an envelope of cash at the field.
[16:38] We will let you know when your envelope is ready for pickup.
[16:42] Okay.
[16:42] So, don't say, "Oh, it's uh the first day of July.
[16:47] Where's my money for June?"
[16:47] It doesn't quite work like that.
[16:49] So, it does take a little bit to uh get that figured out.
[16:53] So, don't be hounding us about that, please.
[16:57] All right.
[16:57] And that'll be dealt with by Chris and John Carlo.
[17:00] I have nothing to do with uh with money.
[17:03] Okay.
[17:03] Um, so the referees who took a course this spring, if you referee 15 games in our house league this season, you will receive back the fees for your registration uh with Ontario or Canada Soccer.
[17:13] Uh,
[17:16] uh with Ontario or Canada Soccer.
[17:18] It's at the end of the season.
[17:18] It won't be immediate and uh I may change the number of games you have to referee to be eligible for that.
[17:25] U really depends on how many referees we have and how many games everyone gets, right?
[17:33] And that is all I have for that.
[17:36] Um, again, we'll be talking about the rules at another time.
[17:38] Won't be a video.
[17:40] It'll be in the WhatsApp group.
[17:42] If you have any questions, please uh direct message me in WhatsApp.
[17:46] And uh yeah, let's go back to the uh the webcam here.
[17:50] And uh yeah, thank you for watching.
[17:53] Uh again, let me know if there's any comments or anything I missed that you think I should have covered.
[17:59] Um, yeah.
[18:02] And, uh, we'll see you on the field and have a great day.
